Name
Picture Description Purpose
Motherboard

The main printed circuit
board (CPB) in computers.
It is rectangular, and the
biggest and most
important piece of a
computer. It is
multicolored, too.
It serves to function
every part of a
computer, because all
parts connect to the
motherboard in order to
work properly. With a
dysfunctional
motherboard, or even
without one, a computer
is as good as useless.
CPU (Central
Processing Unit)
The part of a computer
that carries out information
from a computer program
by performing arithmetical,
logical, and input/output
operations so that it
communicates with the
rest of the computer. 2
subunits; ALU (arithmetic
logic unit) & CU (control
unit).
It is often called the
brain of the computer,
because its purpose is to
process digital
information, so that it
could receive an output.
It makes everything on a
computer possible.
RAM (Random
Access Memory)

It is a form of computer
data storage that is
generally located on the
motherboard, so that input
can be received from the
hard drive, and the output
is received by the monitor.
It is responsible for
loading data from the
computers hard drive,
so that programs can
function on the
computer. In other
words, its a computers
temporary memory, but
when a computer is
shut off, that memory is
lost.
ROM (Read-only
memory)
Its another form of
memory inside a
computer, and it is shaped
like a square.
Its capable of holding
and reading data off of
other chips, but it cant
be overwritten. Unlike
RAM, ROM always
stores and saves its
memory, even when a
computer is off.
Video Card

A video card is an internal
circuit board inside a
computer. Its also called:
a display adapter, graphics
card, video adapter, video
board, or a video
controller.
Its job is to display
content from the
computer to another
display device, such as
an external monitor. It
can be connected with
three options, via a
VGA, standard video, or
DVI cable.
Sound Card

It is an expansion card or
internal circuit of a
computer. It can be found
on the motherboard, but
for an upgrade or
replacement, it must
externally go to an
expansion slot.
It outputs audio through
headphones, and
speakers. It has different
ports to connect
speakers, based on
different quality and
types. There are: digital
out, sound in,
microphone, sound out,
firewire, & MIDI/Joystick.
HDD (Hard Disc
Drive)

It is found on the inside of
a computer/laptop, and
come in in various sizes, in
gigabytes, and even
terabytes.
It permanently stores all
data on a computer and
saves it to be available
whenever someone
needs it. The input is
received via the HDD,
and it is output on a
monitor.
Optical Disc
Drive (ODD)

A disc drive found on a
computer that reads discs
and uses laser lights on
the disc. The drive can be
used with CDs, DVDs, and
Blu-ray Discs.
When a disc is inserted
in the drive, laser lights
within or near the visible
light spectrum read the
disc, so that it can be
played on a media
player, or even
overwritten by
something else if the
user would wish.
Network Interface
Card (NIC)

Also known as an Ethernet
card or network adapter, a
network interface card is a
circuit board found on the
inside of a computer, or
could even be inserted on
an expansion slot.
It connects a computer
to a network, such as a
home network or the
Internet, via an Ethernet
adapter. A lot of
computers have wireless
capability as well, also
known as Wi-Fi
Expansion Slots

Also called the bus port or
expansion port, an
expansion slot is an open
slot located on a
computers motherboard.
Expansion slots allow
additional external
boards to connect to the
computer for a better or
innovative experience.
These boards include
video cards, sound
cards, and network
cards. When cables are
connected to one of
these boards, the
computer is optimized
for a better performance.
Ports/Buttons

There are several ports
and buttons on a
computer. Buttons are:
Eject for Optical Drive,
Power, and Reset. Ports:
Audio in/out, USB,
Ethernet, VGA, DVI,
keyboard, mouse, power
socket, and more.
Every port and button
have different functions
and purposes.
Computer fan

Its a fan that is located on
the interior of a computer.
It releases heat out of a
computer, making sure
that a computer wont be
overheated and burned
on the inside.

Wireless Radio
Switch

A simple switch, usually
found on the side of a
laptop.
Turns the capability of
having a wireless
network on or off.
Pointing Stick

Its a simple red dot made
of rubber, usually found in
the middle of a keyboard.
It acts as a secondary
mouse to the laptop.
