Dissertation Focus:

My dissertation research responds to concerns over what biology and gender have to do with behavior
and cognitive capacities. Contemporary political, social and ethical questions are being raised with
respect to personal genomic research on behavior and the potential for designer babies. The same
questions arose fifty years ago with respect to emerging genetic technologies and infant screening. I am
investigating postnatal screenings in the 1960s for children with sex-chromosome anomalies and
subsequent longitudinal studies in psychosocial development. Research was conducted in several
countries and evidence was shared. This will be situated in the contexts of genetic and psychological
counseling, evolving theories of race, gender and intelligence, and the social and legal implications for
reproductive rights.
