I. General Description
The rotary kiln is the key technical equipment for material calcinations in industries of cement and
metallurgy etc. The kiln lining inside is regarded as the principal factor for superior quality, high
production, low consumption and long-term safe operation during the operation of rotary kiln. The
excessively high temperature and thermal oscillation will result in the serious damage of kiln lining and
kiln body. The kiln shell temperature monitoring and on-line analysis system is considered as important
monitoring equipment to prevent damage to kiln lining and kiln shell, guarantee safe and reliable
operation of the rotary kiln and realize its economical performance.
GS series kiln shell scanner is a continuous line scanning monitoring device which can applied in
cement rotary kiln, metallurgy production line, float glass production line and temperature measuring of
other high-speed moving objects. The equipment adopts the KILN SCAN Model high-speed
optical-mechanical inferred temperature measuring scanner manufactured by HGH Inc., France, and
can be applied in different kinds of occasions with various analysis software.
GS-HG kiln shell scanner is specially developed for kiln shell scanning applied in high-temperature
cement rotary kiln. Within a rotating cycle, the system can make an exact position monitoring and
real-time image analysis. Through the images provided by the system, operators can master the
temperature distribution on kiln shell surface and related information about kiln coating and lining, which
can help the operators to improve the operation and avoid damages to kiln lining and kiln shell.
II. System Plan

2. System Working Principle
2.1 Temperature Monitoring
Through kiln rotation, GS-HG Kiln Shell Scanner scans the longitudinal center line with high-speed to
complete temperature measuring on the kiln surface.

2.2 Position Monitoring
The equipment adopts high-temperature resistant approach switch to position the kiln shell. Through
monitoring the rotating speed of output shaft in main drive motor to get the kiln position division, making
every scanning line corresponding to that of actual kiln position. According to relative position between
the scanner and the kiln shell to get an x-directional non-linear two-dimensional coordinate system, and
ensure the coordinate point on screen corresponding to every measuring point on rotary kiln.
2.3 Signal Transmission
The inferred temperature measuring scanner is the key component of whole equipment. It outputs
temperature signal at 4 MHz speed via synchronous serial port. The equipment adopts special
optical-electric converting device to convert and transmit the signal via optical cable to the control
terminal, then restore the signal via optical-electric converting device and send to the communication
device within the computer. The communication device pre-processes the received signal and sends
into the computer at high speed.
2.4. Analysis Software
The system analysis software receives and analyzes the temperature signal and synchronous signal,
then displays both in image and text forms. For concrete software functions, please refer to Part IV
System Functions.
III. Main Equipment Functions
1. Infrared Thermometer
Infrared thermometer is a non-contact temperature measuring instrument which can detect the infrared
radiation emitted from the heat source. It is the key equipment of the system. In order to realize high
speed scanning function, this equipment must be with functions of short sensor response time, high
detecting and scanning speed, accurate temperature pick-up, accurate scan positioning and automatic
temperature regulation etc.

2. Ambience Cabinet
Ambience cabinet is special equipment to place and protect infrared thermometer. It cools down or
warms up automatically to protect the infrared thermometer in different temperatures or climates of
different areas.

3. Intelligence Signal Processing Device
The infrared thermometer is high speed on-line thermometric equipment
with high real time performance and large data output, therefore, an
intelligence signal processing device is specially equipped in the system. The device is a single chip
mechanism mainly to accomplish the following functions:
High-speed real time communication with infrared thermometer to ensure data real-time
feature;
Data transmission verification to ensure its reliability;
Conversion of serial signal to parallel signal;
Buffering sampled temperature signal to memory of SCM system;
Transmission of the data in buffer storage to computer in batches by DMA mode;
Working status indication of thermometer serial port communication and upper computer
parallel port communication.
Supplementation of this device may greatly reduce external data reading time of computer to ensure
the reliability and real-time feature of data transmission and normal operation of software port and avoid
computer jam or system halt caused by large amount of data of direct communication between
infrared thermometer and the computer.

4. I/O Port Device
I/O port device is a built-in port board in the computer. It can be used to receive synchronous triggered
switch signal from kiln shell and synchronize the application software with the hardware of the system.
It can also be connected with the I/O signal form kiln belt to detect the slippage between the kiln belt
and kiln shell. In addition, automatic control of 4 sets kiln shell cooling fan can also be realized through
4 routes of I/O value output.

5. Synchronous Trigger Device
Synchronous trigger device adopts imported high temperature proximity sensor, and can provide

information of rotary kiln testing start point and kiln rotation, such as rotary kiln operation status, kiln
rotating speed and accumulated circles of duty rotary kiln etc. When kiln belt slippage testing function is
added, this signal may also be used as comparative reference value for belt slippage.

6. Control Cabinet
The special electric control cabinet is installed near the infrared thermometer. In the cabinet there
built-in system power supply, proximity sensor controller and fan controller etc., in which the system
power supply adopts military industrial large volume and high reliable special stabilized voltage power
source to provide working power for infrared thermometer and other parts of the system.

7. Belt Slippage Monitoring Device (optional)
The kiln shell rotates through the belt on support of the supporting wheel. For the thermal expansion
and rigid of kiln shell and the belt are different, inner diameter of the belt is larger than out diameter of
the kiln shell. When the rotary kiln is rotating, there will be a relative slippage occurred on the contact
surface between the belt and kiln shell plate. When the belt slippage becomes abnormal, the contact
surface will be stuck or slipping.
The rotary kiln technique is a complicated craft with high-temperature kiln shell, heavy load, high
rotating speed features. Affected by the factors such as inclining installation, stress, thermal expansion
and chemical erosion etc., an abnormal slippage will affect seriously the kiln running safety, even
damaging the kiln shell. GS series infrared on-line monitoring system may provide the belt slippage
monitoring function on users demands to detect the belt slippage between the belt and kiln body during
the kiln rotation.

IV. System functions
The GS-HG kiln shell scanner regulates, processes and analyzes thousands of signals of temperature
and measuring position on kiln shell surface, providing users with rich operation images in graphic
forms which reflect the kiln shell temperature in multiple levels and aspects in various view points. The
operator may call any operation image by clicking the mouse to obtain explicit information of kiln lining
fall, refractory brick fall, red kiln, and coating status etc. in the kiln.
1. Main Operating Images
1.1 Axial Temperature Distribution View (Temperature Trend Curve Display)
The view displays axial distribution curve of highest and lowest temperature. It also displays the
temperature distribution curve of last scanning cycle and compares with it. Irregularities of kiln coating
can be made out through the view, such as information of kiln coating disproportion, kiln coating
lumping or inside clinker ring etc.
This view provides the operator with temperature change tendency of any assigned point on kiln shell
surface. The temperature change and tendency of any point on the surface of kiln shell can be
observed.
1.2 Section Temperature Distribution View
This view outlines in polar coordinates form the temperature distribution of each monitoring section in
last few monitoring cycles and the comparative temperature distribution imitation view. It may display all
section circumstances along axial direction in automatic or manual mode.
1.3 Axial Temperature Expansion View
The view stretches out the kiln shell and marks the kiln shell surface temperature distribution by
different colors. A temperature color scale is attached to confirm the temperature of each point on the
kiln shell surface. The expansion view reflects two dimensional temperature distributions in axial and
radial directions. Through this view, such information will be revealed as the agglomeration, refractory
brick fall, and the clicker ring as well as the corresponding geometric size and precise physical position
on kiln shell surface.
1.4 Kiln Coating Distribution View inside the Kiln

This view shows historical temperature peak value, current temperature peak value, axial temperature
distribution curve actually monitored and kiln coating comparative thickness distribution view. Through
the operation menu, the information of coating thickness inside the kiln can be viewed directly.
1.5 Three Dimensional Heat View
This view expands the kiln shell to make kiln shell surface temperature distribution displayed in
mountain shape, with peak indicating high temperature and valley indicating low temperature. Three
dimensional heat view can be whirled or expanded, and it can also be viewed from angles of front or
back, left or right. The view shows temperature distribution of kiln shell surface accurately and
completely with vivid and straight view which can be easily recognized in one sight.
1.6 Comprehensive Display View
In order to observe the surface temperature of kiln shell simultaneously from different sides, and
comprehensively grasp kiln inside information of through kiln shell surface temperature, the above
important views are combined and displayed on one screen.
1.7 Refractory Brick Management System (auxiliary function)
Based on the complete and accurate monitoring of kiln shell temperature, the refractory brick
management system software positions the refractory bricks precisely according to the brick features in
different sections within rotary kiln, and analyzes the service conditions of refractory materials
automatically. Its functions include:
Establishing brick database;
Setting the kiln bricks;
Distribution of current service bricks;
Historical high temperature distribution on kiln surface;
Hotspot distribution;
Floating hotspot distribution;
Details of hotspot temperature;
Details of filtered temperature;
Details of kiln lining wearing;
Storage management of kiln bricks.
2. Other Auxiliary Functions
2.1 History Browse
The equipment can save the data of each monitoring cycle periodically, and the data can be saved for
one year. The operator may browse historical record of any time so as to compare kiln shell
temperature changes before and after, especially when abnormal situation occurs on the kiln lining, the
occurring time and tendency can be traced back so that the operator may summarize and improve the
operation process.
2.2 Alarm Browse
If the actual measured temperature exceeds the set value, the system will automatically fill the alarm
information (including actual measured temperature, set alarm temperature value, alarm position, and
alarm time) into alarm chart, and the alarm light will flicker on the screen.
2.3 Value Browse
In order to obtain precise temperature of each point on kiln shell, the operator may move the mouse on
main operation images, where precise values of corresponding measured position and measured
temperature on the kiln shell surface will be displayed.
2.4 Screen Copy
All main function operating views can be printed in high quality on color printer.
2.5 Working Parameter Setup

Scanning direction and scanning position setup;
Communication rate setup between Infrared thermometer and intelligence signal
processing device;
Multiple working parameter setup of Infrared thermometer for different monitoring objects;
Password check on entering the display parameter setup or working parameter
modification and password reset.
2.6 Display Parameter Setup
Alarm peak value setup along kiln axial direction;
Absolute reference temperature setup along kiln axial direction;
Kiln shell measured temperature value regulation setup;
Temperature response value on cooling fan automatic start and response position setup;
Time counter, number counter and the historical value reset.
2.7 System Help
The system provides on-line help, including system general description, operation guide, view
description, maintenance manual, system testing, external connection and manufacturer informationetc.
2.8 Other Functions
These comprise kiln running imitative indication, rotary speed indication, circle accumulation of kiln
rotation, and time accumulation of kiln operation.
V. System Installation
1. Technical Requirements
1.1 Scanning Tower
It is suggested to build well the scanning tower with waterproof, sun block, ventilation and heat
resistance features on the top. The simplified construction diagram is attached. The ground resistance
should be less than 4 .
1.2 Power Supply

1.3 Pipeline
The following pipelines should be laid in site

2. Installation of Computer and Displayer
Install the computer and displayer in vindictive, clear and dry place. Switch-on the power supply, and
link the computer shell to the meter ground wire.
2.1 Installation of Devices on Scanning Tower
Wield the scanner bracket at a suitable position on the platform of scanning tower with
adequate distance to the top about 800 to 1000mm;
Adjust the angle of versatile pan/tilt when to install, and tight the bolts, then fix the optical
fiber fusion splicer in the installation board inside;
Install the electric control cabinet at an easy to operate position on the scanning tower and
keep it as near as possible with the scanner;
Install the ambience cabinet between the versatile pan/tilt, and tighten the bolts on both
sides;

Install the scanner in the cooling plate inside the ambience cabinet, then tighten the bolts.
2.2 Installation of Trigger Device
The trigger device should be installed in a relatively lower and open position which lies in front of the
belt No. 1 or at rear of the belt No. 3. The kiln shell block should be wielded with adequate distance
from the kiln shell, usually at about 400700mm afar to avoid short distance causing high temperature
to shorten its working life.
Wield the other end of steel connecting pole on the block of trigger device to the kiln shell
outer surface, and keep the block parallel with the shell axis. The wielding point should
just below the bracket position for easy installation of the approach switch.
NoteThe temperature of the position should be considered as lower as possible. There shall
be no obstacles for the block when it rotates with kiln shell or injure the inspectors.
Install the synchronous trigger switch in the hole of steel bracket, and keep the approach
switch at 410mm afar from the block through adjusting the tightening bolts of approach
switch. For details, please refer to the attached Synchronous Trigger Device Installation
Diagram of GS-H Series Kiln Shell Scanner.
2.3 Installation of Kiln Belt Slippage Monitoring Device
Install the limb of kiln belt slippage monitoring device in the clearance between the kiln main drive motor
and the reducer, and clamp it tightly. Then install the optical-electric switch sensor on the special
bracket, making the incoming of optical-electric switch and the access of receiving light get stuck in the
index gear of limb as shown in the following diagram:

2.4. Laying and Connection of Cables (optical cable fusion splice is needed)

GS-HG Kiln Shell Scanner and System Wiring Diagram of GS-HG Kiln Shell Scanner.
VI. System Debugging
1. Computer Setup
1.1 Hard Disk Partition
Divide the hard disk into Drive C (60G) as working disk and Drive D as backup disk.

1.2 File Backup
The following files should be backed up in Drive D:
Database backup, C:\L0S21 C:\MISECH21 C:\SCANT21 C:\PICT21\
Backup operating system
Backup of running programs
Backup of all kinds of drivers (incl. main board, display card, printer etc.)
1.3 Automatic Running Setup
Modify the sentence into run=c:\jxgscan.exe of the file C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI in the operating system,
making it a special computer for entering the software on start-up and switching off on exit.
1.4 Computer Date and Time Setup
Set the time/date format correctly:
Date format: YYYY-MM-DD
Time pattern: HH:MM:SS
1.5 Computer Taskbar Setup
Set the task bar to automatic hidden and close always in front to on exit to prevent unrelated people
from entering into Windows system for other operations.
1.6. System Antivirus
Install the latest antivirus software and scan the virus for the last time, then uninstall it to prevent it
affecting the data collecting speed from automatic running.
2. Computer application program setting
2.1 Set random parameters A, B and Uib of HG scanner;
2.2 Adjust Uib parameter to ensure exact temperature measuring at low-temperature segment (such as
belt temperature);
2.3 Set the relative position between the belt and the scanner, then re-start the application program
after saving;
2.4 Set the running parameters and display parameters according to actual situations on site.
3. Scanner Adjustment
3.1 First to adjust the scanning plane of scanner. Loosen the bolts tighten on both sides of the pan/tilt,
and rotate the scanner angle to make the scanning plane confront to the shell axis. Pay attention to
make scanning plane of the scanner correspond to the shell inclining angle, and tighten the bolts on
both sides.
3.2 Loosen the fixing bolts under pan/tilt, and turn the angle of the scanner left and right to make
position of belts displayed in the software correspond to the actual positions. Tighten the bolts under the
pan/tilt.
3.3 Examine the system wiring and protection to ensure it is arranged neatly with clear sign and tight
ground.
3.4 Observe the display effort to ensure it displays clearly with accurate temperature.
VII. System Testing
1. Intelligent Signal Communication & Processing Device
The intelligent signal communication & processing device receives serial signal from high speed
scanner and converts it into parallel signal then send to the computer. It enhances the communication
speed effectively for large amount of data, and solves the problem of high error code rate under high
communication and the problem of computer overload caused by long time serial port communication.
There are 4 indicating LED on the intelligent multi-function data collection device to indicate the working
status:

Red: program running indicator. The LED flickers when system work normally and always
on or always off when system work abnormally.
Green: serial communication indicator. The LED flickers when system work normally and
always on or always off when system work abnormally.
Yellow: program running indicator. The LED flickers when system work normally and
always on or always off when system work abnormally.
Yellow: standby.
2. I/O Port Device
The I/O port device is used for detecting system switch signal, including kiln synchronous signal
detection, kiln belt clearance detection, and on-line detection of system working status.
There are 12 LED on I/O board corresponding 12 I/O channels. The red one indicates input signals. It
turns on when input signals arrives, otherwise it turns off. The green one indicates output signals. It
turns on when output signals provided, and otherwise it turns off.
3. Synchronous Trigger Device
The synchronous trigger device refers to the approach switch or travel switch which is installed under
the block wielded to kiln shell. This signal is very important for it can be used as synchronous signal for
the computer to collect signal from the scanner within one rotary cycle of the kiln. The system will stop
collecting data when the signal gets lost.
4. Computer system
4.1 Software Testing
The software will automatically test the following contents on entering the system software of infrared
on-line temperature & analysis system:
Whether the system application programs are modified;
Whether database files exist;
Whether parameter setting files exist;
Whether the user is valid.
5. Normal operation of the system depends on the two points below:
5.1 Whether the Operating System (WIN2000 or WINXP) configuration and the system parameter
settings are correct;
5.2 The integrity of the application programs. Only the latter is tested. If the integrity is destroyed, the
system will automatically display the lacked file directory or file name. You can exit from the system and
make a copy from backup files. The hard disk is usually divided into drive C and drive D. The above
mentioned backup programs or files are stored in drive D with the same names. Copy the same files to
corresponding directory in drive C.
Warningthe system can only fix itself and the contents in its operation directory list instead of the
WINDOWS operation system. Any incorrect configuration to WINDOWS and parameter setting will lead
to abnormal operation of the system, even to system collapse. If the backup files in drive D are also
deleted, the analysis system cannot be fixed any more.
6. Hardware On-line Testing
The I/O port board in the system can be tested through the provided testing software (under
\TESTJXSYS directory) in the computer. For details, please refer to users manual of the software.
Warning: close testing software after testing, otherwise the system will run abnormally.

VIII. System Maintenance
1. Infrared Thermometer
The infrared thermometer is an expensive and precise temperature measuring electromechanical
device integrated high-speed infrared radiation sensor, optical-mechanical scanner and intelligent
controller. The operating parameters have been set before sold. Usually no changes are necessary.
After being used for a long time, the scanning window will get dirty and its precision is affected. Clean it
by the following procedures:
1.1 Blow off the floating dust with a balloon or brush it away with a clean lens brush;
1.2 For remaining dust and foul, take a block of cotton dipped with pure alcohol and do the cleaning. Be
careful not to scratch the window surface.
Warning: Do not plug in or out the sockets of high-speed infrared scanner with power, otherwise the
port circuit will be damaged.
2. Intelligent Signal Communication Processing Device and I/O Port Device
The intelligent signal communication & processing device and I/O port device are installed within the
industrial computer. No maintenance is necessary.
Warning: Do not plug in or out the outside connection cables with power, otherwise the signal
connectors on the circuit board will be damaged.
3. Industrial Control Computer
The infrared on-line temperature measuring & analysis system works on WIN2000/XP operating
systems. Please do not change or set the system configuration and parameters at will, otherwise the
system application programs may not be operated or operated abnormally. The system software
consists of boot, operation programs, database, parameter setting files etc., it is saved in the hard disk
as outside files and no one can be omitted.
Warning: The configuration of WINDOWS and system parameters have been set to optimum. No
emendation and deletion is permitted! Otherwise the application system will not be operated or
operated abnormally, even to system collapse.
XI. Frequent Trouble Analysis and Trouble Shooting
1. The system dose not work
ReasonANo power on site
BAbnormal synchronous signal
Dispose method: AChecking power, such as power-drop, and switch-on to solve it.
BIf the power is normal, check synchronous signal and adjust distance between
approach switch and block. At the same time, you have to confirm the voltage
between kiln signal and ground is 0 V when the kiln signal exists and 24 V when the
kiln signal disappears.
2. The system work but no input data or input data is disorder.
Reason: Data cable from the site to computer looses or dose not contact tightly.
Dispose method: Connect the sockets and wires again.
