THE THEIST DELUSION

By Steve Morgan

This book provides an in-depth study of religion and its disastrous

consequences on the human race. The study begins with a detailed
explanation of the origin of religion over a hundred thousand years ago
through the religious social bonds of hunter-gatherers, which served to
help in their survival, and how their seizures of ecstasy altered their
brain structure, leading to the evolution of a defective brain that survived
until the present among a large part of the human population. In this
way, religion became an obstacle to the intellectual evolution of the
human race.

SYNOPSIS

Religion is not a part of evolution in which the human race sought to find
meaning in the universe. Religion did not specifically evolve as a consequence of
man’s quest for an explanation of the origin of life. Religion is a mental disease
that began in the primitive fear of the unknown. This constant fear altered the
human brain through countless generations, creating a defective brain structure.
The reason for religion and the belief in a god arose as a result of abnormal
thinking and perception. Therefore, religion is a fundamental part of the evolution
of mental illness. Religion is a plague in the human mind, a terrible plague that has
devastated humanity for more than 100,000 years. Recent excavations provide
evidence that the most ancient religious superstitions began with the cult of the
dead.
Religion originated because of ignorance, a low state of consciousness, but
mostly because of fear. As humans evolved, they began to wonder if death was
something permanent, and this caused them to live in constant fear of death. They
couldn’t accept the fact that they were going to die, and they sought for an
alternative. They created the myth that dying was a passage into another life, and
this is how religion originated. They sought to find in religion a relief from their
fear, and religion was thus created as a result of panic.
The idea that a god exists originated in primitive animistic beliefs. Primitive
people still saw their relatives and friends in dreams after they died and could not
recognize the difference between dreams and reality. Primitive man was unable to
distinguish the difference between reality and imagination because he lived under a
much lower level of conscious intensity, and this caused him to misperceive the
surrounding world, which is the reason that led to the creation of religion. The
conscious intensity in the primitive mentality was so low that the visions in the
dreams were thought to be ghosts of the departed who were still living after death.
Primitive people observed how the sun, moon, planets and stars seemed to
move around them. It appeared as if they were at the center of the cosmos, or in the
focus of attention of some supreme observer. Every human being exists in a single
conscious point in space and time. Therefore, it appears that each of us is living at
the center of the universe. What’s more, every living creature perceives itself as a
cosmic center. As a result, every living creature perceives itself as the most
important part of creation. Primitive people had no knowledge to be aware of this
illusion. Any person can be affected by such egocentric illusion if it is not
corrected. When people believe to be the most important part of creation, they
make claims of superiority. Some people claim to be god’s special creation. Others
claim to have the perfect knowledge. Still others claim their perception is the
evidence of an outer reality. Primitive people assumed that illusions were the same
as reality. Consequently, ancient humans believed that the forces of nature had a
personal interest in their behavior because they assumed that they were the most
important part of creation.
Anthropomorphism is an adaptive trait that took control of our ancestors’
unconscious mind. Natural selection increased the unconscious anthropomorphic
tendencies of humans through millennia. In the beginning only specific objects and
events were included, afterwards all of nature, until finally the unconscious mind
persuaded itself that the entire world of experience was merely a show deliberately
arranged by some master dramatist.
Primitive people formed ritualistic groups that served to form social bonds. The
initiation rituals of hunter-gatherers involved rigorous physical and emotional
trials. The religious feasts and ceremonies of hunter-gatherers, which involved
rhythmic dancing and the ingestion of psychotropic substances that produced
ecstatic emotional states contributed to the evolution of a religious structure in the
brain.
The ecstatic states and mystical experiences evolved in the same manner. An
ecstatic state is an altered state of consciousness typically brought on by some form
of sensory deprivation or over-stimulation, physical or emotional stress, and/or
ingestion of psychotropic substances. Ecstatic states or mystical experiences
constituted the fundamental basis for religion. The individual believes that the
mystical experience reveals absolute truths. The experience is felt as an awakening
to a world where all things exist in complete unity and as a deep sense of union
with God.
The human brain became genetically predisposed to mystical experiences
during the evolutionary period of early man in order to diminish the fear from the
threat of the hostile environment. Primitive man experienced seizures of ecstasy
through which he attempted to define the mystery of the relationship between
humanity and the unknown by developing supernatural explanations for
everything.
Our human ancestors had to face many fearful and difficult situations. They
developed tales about all the circumstances of life, including social, physical,
emotional, mental, and spiritual existence. They created myths, beliefs about the
world creation and human creation in order to give meaning to their lives. They
developed rituals, ceremonies, and practices to heal their mind and body, to mark
life passages, and to placate forces beyond their control. In their seizures of
ecstasy, they heard voices, and had visions and experiences that seemed to be
produced by supernatural forces. Visionary experiences of shadowy figures, muted
voices and blinding luminescence were experienced by our ancient ancestors when
they were stricken by illness or a near-fatal accident that placed them at the brink
of death. They felt embraced by the entire cosmos, as if they had been living in a
timeless existence that stretched all the way to infinity, as though they had been
united to a divine providence that made all their fears disappear. Their fear of death
was replaced by happiness, serenity, and a dazzling light, as they submerged into
an ecstatic state that felt as the highest heavenly connection. They thought that
such experience was the perception of a more fundamental reality. However, the
experience is the best proof that heaven is entirely a creation of the mind.
There are certain mechanisms in the brain which primitive man developed and
harnessed over thousands of years to facilitate the process of unordinary
experience. They all manipulated their body’s nervous system either by over or
under stimulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems of arousal,
which led them toward seeing, hearing, touching and feeling God through an
emotional experience that arises from the conditions of the nervous system, and not
from reality.
Religious belief is an outgrowth of brain architecture that evolved during early
human history. The belief in God became deeply embedded in the ancient human
brain, and this type of brain survived until the present time. The biological
explanation for the belief in God is evolutionary adaptation of a neurological
disorder. Therefore, religion is a vestigial artifact of the primitive mind.
Religion is the product of malfunctions in the brain. Scientific experiments
have shown that religious experiences can be induced by placing an apparatus in
the head of an experimental subject to stimulate specific regions of the brain with
electromagnetic pulses. The electromagnetic fields of low intensity can stimulate
bursts of neural activity in the temporal lobes producing feelings of a sensed
presence, religious sensations or God. Such experiences serve to prove there is a
defective region in the brain that causes the vision of God. The discovery that the
perceptions of God are neuro-physiological proves that God doesn’t really exist.
Our sense of self depends on the left temporal lobe. If the brain is disturbed by
a head injury, epileptic seizure, stroke, drugs, psychological trauma, or external
electromagnetic pulses, the left-brain may detect activity in the right hemisphere as
another self, or a sensed presence. Depending on a person's circumstances and
background, they may perceive the sensed presence as extraterrestrials, ghosts,
angels, fairies, muses, demons, or God. The temporal lobes are the biological basis
of the god-experience. This electronic apparatus thus serves to prove beyond all
doubt that the god-experience is just an electrical seizure.
Religious ideas interfered in human evolution since primitive times. Religion
was an obstacle to the intellectual evolution of humanity. Hunter-gatherers
unknowingly chose to alter the course of intellectual evolution through religious
beliefs. Religious beliefs caused the brain structure of primitive man to deviate
from normal evolution through millennia, resulting in an inherent source of
religious experience, which appears to be reality. This brain defect is an inferior
characteristic, which developed in ancient religious men, and was passed on to the
succeeding generations throughout the course evolution until the present day.
Primitive people formed ritualistic groups that served to form social bonds.
However, those who did not participate were regarded as bad omens and were
estranged or killed. This attitude remained among religious groups until present
times. The consequence has always been that the most intelligent humans were
always persecuted and killed. This type of behavior led to a deterioration in the
evolution of the human race, allowing the most violent and intellectually inferior to
survive in greater numbers. This is how religion has devastatingly interfered in
human evolution, preventing the positive advancement of humanity, and resulting
in the present chaos around the world.
Primitive people created social bonds through their religious rituals, which
aided in their survival. However, the reason that the religious social bonds aided in
their survival was not because religious people were the best adapted to survive as
a consequence of natural selection, but because they unknowingly used selective
breeding to preserve their defective religious human type with its inherent brain
deficiencies.
Natural selection eliminated the weak in body or mind, and those that survived
commonly exhibited a vigorous state of physical and mental health. However,
primitive man unknowingly did the utmost to check the process of elimination
through the formation of ritualistic groups that served to form social bonds that
aided in their survival. Laws were established in support of the religious bonds,
which led to the formation of religious societies. The result was that those who
were religiously deranged were favored and protected. This is the reason that
contributed to the proliferation and preservation of defective religious brains,
which would otherwise have succumbed to panic and eventually become extinct
due to their weak mental constitution, giving way to a stronger race with a superior
mentality. Consequently, the mentally weak religious members of the human race
propagated their kind, and the result was a world infested with inferior and
primitive religious brains.
In evolution, most of the changes in an organism are errors, not improvements.
However, improvements that are beneficial to survival do not necessarily mean that
an organism becomes better, only that the organism is better fitted or best adapted
to survive. An advantage for survival is not an improvement of the species. In this
way, the social bonds created by religion in hunter-gatherers were not a
characteristic that aided in the improvement of the species, they merely aided in
their survival.
The survival of the fittest or best adapted means the fittest to survive, but the
fittest to survive does not necessarily mean the most adequate, the most wise, or
the most intelligent. If this were the case, there would be no vermin. Religious
people can do the same. They can survive by establishing organized religious
institutions. But that does not necessarily mean that religion is an indispensable
requirement for survival, or that religion was a necessary pre-condition for the
evolution of human societies. Consequently, religion was not a necessary part of
human evolution.
The history of religion is a history of terror, which proves that religion
corrupted, rather than improved the human species. When terror is used as a means
for survival, the organisms that have the highest terrorist characteristics are the
ones who survive and prevail, but those characteristics are a deterioration of the
species, not an improvement.
Religious faith has always been the cause for the most horrendous atrocities, as
history can tell. And this came as a result of primitive man’s unenlightened
decision to alter the course of human evolution through the ecstatic religious rituals
that modified his brain structure, leading to the evolution of a defective and
inferior religious brain. Religion is thus a human tragedy and the ruin of all
mankind.
Religion is in reality the hotbed of iniquity and viciousness from which every
type of delusion emerges to create all the miseries and evils that infest humanity.
Religion engenders irrational thinking. It is the major source of anthropocentric,
anthropomorphic, ethnocentric, and egocentric ideas. It is the greatest source of
hatred that has ever devastated humanity. Religion fits the description of all types
of mental diseases including psychosis, schizophrenia, paranoid psychosis,
paranoid schizophrenia, manic states with paranoid psychosis, substance related
paranoid states, insanity, madness, perversion, immorality, corruption, depravity,
and wickedness. Religion is the source of all types of mental diseases and all types
of evil. Religion is madness in the most extreme degree. Religion is the highest
attainable psychotic state, the uppermost stage of insanity, and the supreme
delusion. Consequently, religion is the plague of humanity, and God is the
pestilence of the world.
