How I got into Vedic Astrology
Like most Western astrologers in the early nineties, I was very excited by
Project indsight, the delving by !obert "chmidt and !obert and into
astrology#s early Western roots$ %he &!obs&, as they were sometimes called,
began recovering astrological a''roaches that had been lost (or hundreds o(
years$
I#ll never (orget !ob and#s lecture on "ect at the )*+ #,- con(erence, when
he introduced the ancient .reek ideas o( accidental dignity, i$e$ the /oon,
/ars, and 0enus were stronger (or a 'erson born during the night, and the "un,
"aturn, and Ju'iter (or a birth during daylight$ "o many astrologers attended
the lecture that they had to move its location to larger rooms twice1
2ut what turned out to be the most im'ortant in(luence u'on me, at the
con(erence, was an o((hand remark by 3iana 4$ !osenberg$ In her lecture on
(ixed stars, she casually said, &5( course, with the 'lanet in %ro'ical .emini
and "idereal %aurus, there will be a blend o( both signs energies$&
)ntil she said that, I had resisted indu *strology like the 'lague$ I had brie(
contacts, like 'icking u' a classical text and o'ening it to a section that said,
&you will die o( cholera& or talking to a "iderealist who had discarded houses
as a methodology$ 2ut in general couldn#t believe that indu astrologers, (or
exam'le, considered me a .emini "un or "cor'io /oon, when my %ro'ical
'ositions (it me so well$
%he statement by /s$ !osenberg o'ened my mind$ "ubse6uently, I attended
the next Project indsight con(erence in West 0irginia, where they o((ered 77 in
addition to the classes on classical .reek 'hiloso'hy and astrology 77 lectures
by 0edic astrology teachers$
*s I listened to 3ennis arness lecture on 0edic 'lanetary mythology, I
reali8ed that instead o( studying the (ragmentary documents o( a discontinuous
Western tradition, I should be studying the astrology o( India, which hasn#t
su((ered any su''ression or interrru'tion, and has been 'racticed (or thousands
o( years$
In order to do so, I had to &com'artmentali8e my brain$& I had to kee' all that I
had learned and mastered in Western astrology se'arate (rom what I was
learning about 0edic astrology 77 or it would get just too con(using$ 9or the
(irst three years o( intensive study, that#s what I did 77 ke't the two astrologies
strictly se'arate$
5nly a(ter becoming more (acile with 0edic astrology could I then begin to see
how each astrology com'lemented and in(ormed the other, a 'rocess that
continues to be more and more enriching$

The Ma(or Aspects in Western Astrology
Western Astrologers co""only use ) "a(or aspects in their chart wor%:
the con(unction' se!tile' square' trine' and opposition# *More advanced
astrologers will pay attention to se"isquares and sesquiquadrates' as well
as quincun!es' quintile and other "inor aspects# +eginners should be wary
of trying to use too "any aspects at once' to avoid confusion#,
Aspects that are within - degrees of e!actness *e#g# two planets . degrees
apart or /0. degrees apart for the opposition, are "uch stronger than
aspects that are ) degrees apart# Aspects over ) degrees apart often
contribute little to the dyna"ics of the chart unless there are few or no
stronger aspects# Aspects that are / /1. degrees orb or s"aller are the
strongest of all and should be given the "ost attention#
A con(unction occurs when planets are within 0 - /2 degrees of each other#
This can be the "ost powerful of all aspects' because it focalies the
person3s energy "ore fully in (ust one area of the life *one house, and
a"plifies a particular type of energy *one sign,#
The con(unction represents the blending of two *or "ore, ad(acent
planets3 energies and the"es# If the planets are of si"ilar nature' the
con(unction is a natural blending# *4uch as con(unctions between "e"bers
of the firey group 4un' Mars' 5upiter' and 6luto7 or between "e"bers of
the cooler group 4aturn' Mercury' Venus' and &eptune' but not between
the two groups#,
If it is between li%e planets' one does have to be careful of not being too
s%ewed or e!tre"e in the area involved# +ut if it is a con(unction between
the two groups' then there is a challenge within the con(unction that "ust
