Protection and
Control
The B30, a digital bus differential
relay, provides bus protection
and metering in one integrated
package. As part of the Universal
Relay Family, the B30 provides
superior protection that includes:
Bus Protection
The B30 can handle a basic config-
uration consisting of a single
busbar with up to six feeders. Both
restrained and unrestrained
(instantaneous) differential protec-
tion elements are provided.
The restrained bus differential
element uses both differential and
current directional comparison
protection principles. The differen-
tial element uses a dual-slope,
dual-breakpoint characteristic. The
restraining current is formed as a
maximum of the input currents
for better stability during through-
fault conditions and faster
operation on internal faults. The
current directional comparison
principle checks the angular rela-
tionship between the differential
zone currents.
The biased bus differential protec-
tion operates in the two-out-of-two
mode for low differential currents.
For high differential currents, bus
protection operates using the
differential characteristic alone if
CT saturation is not detected. If CT
saturation occurs, the relay switch-
es to the two-out-of-two operating
mode for better through-fault
stability.
Dynamic Bus Replica
A dynamic busbar replica mecha-
nism is provided by associating
the breaker/switch status signals
with the differential zone currents.
This allows avoiding switching CT
secondary circuits when protect-
ing re-configurable busbars.
Contact Discrepancy Alarm
This function can be accom-
plished via FlexLogic in
conjunction with the dynamic bus
replica mechanism.
CT Saturation Detection
This mechanism detects CT satu-
ration during external faults,
without triggering on internal
faults. No extra security meas-
ures are required, allowing very
fast operation on internal fault.
The CT saturation detection
mechanism analyzes the trajectory
of the differential and restraint
currents.
CT Failure Detection
This function monitors the level
of the differential current. When
the current remains above a set-
point for a pre-defined interval, a
CT alarm occurs.
Undervoltage Supervision
Optional undervoltage supervi-
sion can be used to prevent
operation of the differential
protection due to CT troubles.
Two-phase undervoltage elements
are available for this purpose with
the provision of voltage inputs.
TOC Backup
A phase TOC protection function
provides backup for each circuit.
External Check-Zone
An optional external check-zone
can be used to prevent operation
of the differential protection due
to CT troubles. If one B30 current
input is left unused and an alter-
native set of current signals is
available from independent CTs,
the currents can be combined
externally and connected to the
relay. Two-phase overcurrent
elements are available to check
the level of this independently
formed differential current to
supervise the main differential
protection.
