Hearing Aid Prices in India

To understand how hearing aids are priced we must first understand different types of hearing aids.
Hearing aid prices vary from:
a. One hearing aid brand to another
b. Receiver Sizes
c. Types of Hearing aids such as BTE, CIC, IIC etc
d. Hearing aid Processor/ in other words channels & bands
e. Signal Processing Features of the Hearing Aids and other technology
We can also categorize hearing aids as Digital Hearing aids & Analog Hearing Aids. Broadly speaking,
digital hearing aids prices in our country start from around Rs. 10,000/- and upper limit of prices
reaches Rs. 2.5-2.8 lacs basis all the above given factors.
Analog Hearing Aids are below that price range starting from a basic Rs. 300 (i.e the infamous China
Brand) to Rs. 9,000/-.
As far as recommendation is concerned, digital hearing aids are recommended over the analog
hearing aids since analog hearing aids are not comfortable to the user whereas digital hearing aids
offer a plethora of features to the user to cope with challenges of the day to day life.
You can also ask as to which brand of hearing aid is premium priced and which brand is cheap?
It would be interesting to note that Siemens Hearing aids were some of the first to appear in the
Indian sub-continent and since Siemens was a known brand name in the electronics, these were an
instant hit. Siemens Hearing aid were also less priced compared to other imported options, a
scenario which exists till date to an extent. However Siemens was known to pump hearing aids of
analog nature especially to the cash strived govt. institutions at much cheaper rates. The market
penetration of Siemens as a hearing aid brand was phenomenal, though it gradually started to
decline more after Y2K when several other hearing aid manufacturers entered in the Indian market
with newer advanced algorithms for sound processing.
Another hit of the olden times was a product named danavox 215UT. This product still exists in the
market and is priced at Rs. 6,500/- as per year 2014 revised pricelist. This product being a non-digital
off the shelf product sold like hot cakes amongst the population who were looking for a cheaper
solution to their hearing problems. The product is capable of covering up to severe hearing loss and
has a trimmer control function as well as a manual volume control with it.
Oticon is another brand in the market which gave out programmable hearing aids starting from Rs.
9,800 onwards. The hearing aids are very basic in nature and work on a linear amplification
algorithm. Oticon in India is marketed by Otic hearing solutions pvt ltd which is a privately held
organization.
Other known brands which exist in the market include Starkey, Widex, Phonak, Unitron, Resound,
Sonic, Intertone etc. Few companies established their brand & reputation in the market as premium
companies. Starkey was one of them and Starkey Hearing Aids came with multiple programming
options quality and reliability. Phonak followed in their footsteps and introduced similar quality
products with a higher price wherein their Naida Series still remains a big hit. Starkey introduced IIC
hearing aids for the first time in the market with a wooping Rs. 2.2lac MRP of a single unit. Slowly
these prices were bought down to 1lac with other competitors such as phonak, widex, oticon etc
entering the 100 percent invisible hearing aids section. Resound was one of the first to bring wireless
streaming to hearing aids and these hearing aids namely the Alera series were the premium priced
hearing aids for them
As of date the price war between hearing aid manufacturers is going berserk. Whereas companies
are targeting the booming Indian economy launching more expensive products with newer and
more advanced features, they are simultaneously trying to launch more and more products in the
cheaper hearing aids segment. The price war is wild and it is aimed at targeting all segments of
Indian pocket thereby leaving consumer and dispenser both confused as to which product to be
used. Although there is a plethora of options for the users to choose from and dispensers to give, it
is leaving more unsatisfied hearing impaired patients every day. Neither is the dispenser trying to
concentrate on the solution nor is the consumer with half knowledge and more options making the
right choice.

Old age and hearing problems
Presbycusis or age related hearing loss is the most common form of hearing loss affecting nearly
90% of the geriatric population. An audiologist examining this hearing loss often diagnosis this as a
sensorineural hearing loss for it pertains to degeneration of the hair cells in the cochlear region as
well as weakening of the nerve functions which take the signals to the brain.
Why does this occur?
As age progresses, due to decreased cell functions as well as reduced supply of building blocks to the
cells, there occurs a natural cell death. Hair cells within the inner ear or the cochlea once degenerate
do not re-grow in mammals hence causing a sensory deterioration. The process is fastened by any
ailments, blood pressure, diabetes etc.
How it is diagnosed?
It can be very simply diagnosed through a Pure Tone Audiometry Test in which responses are
measured by giving pure tones of different frequencies between 250Hz & 8KHz. The responses of
patients are measured through Air Conduction means and Bone Conduction Means. If minimum
responses through both air conduction and bone conduction are not more than 10dB apart, then the
diagnosis of the Hearing Test is Sensorineural Hearing Loss. If there is no other pathology involved
and there is no history of ear problems, then for individuals above 60 years of age with hearing loss
are susceptible presbycusis.
How it is treated?
The early it is treated the better it is for the individual as hearing loss due to ageing can cause a
gradual deterioration of speech discrimination ability. Treatment for this type of hearing loss is very
simple; one can use a digital programmable hearing aid which can be tuned as per the specifications
of the Audiogram.
These days there are a number of hearing aid brands and different types of Hearing aid devices even
invisible hearing aids which can be worn with ease and comfort.

Tinnitus- The Doctors Enigma!
Are you experiencing a ringing sound in your ears? If yes then you may have Tinnitus!
There was a statistical survey study that pointed 1 in every 22 individuals to have tinnitus. You may
classify it as a plague, however, Tinnitus is not a disease; its more of a condition wherein the
individual experiences or perceives a sound even though there isnt any in the environment. That is
the reason why it is classified as a condition rather than a disease! Let us analyse different Types of
Tinnitus, Causes of Tinnitus and Treatment/rehabilitation Procedures.
There are 2 categories of Tinnitus:
Objective Tinnitus
Subjective Tinnitus
Objective Tinnitus is a rare form of tinnitus wherein other individuals can also hear the sound from
the sufferers ears. This sound can have its origins through muscle spasms or blood pressure
variations which create a crackling sound in the middle ear region. There is a form of Objective
Tinnitus known as the Pulsatile Tinnitus in which sound is caused with the movement of the pulse.
As the blood rushes near the ear region, there is a sort of turbulence which results in this form of
Tinnitus sound. This may also indicate inflammatory disease of blood vessels.
Subjective Tinnitus is the more common form of Tinnitus and there are numerous underlying causes
of this. The causes can be:
Hearing Loss and Ear Problems
Neurological Disorders
Metabolic Disorders
Psychiatric Disorders
And many Others!
What adds to a Doctors depression while dealing with tinnitus cases is that large percentages go
unsolved where the patients dont understand why their doctor isnt able to provide them a
solution; and even switching consultants doesnt guarantee satisfactory results! Cases which find no
relief through medicine can be dealt with through counselling and a rehabilitative approach. This
requires intervention and efforts from the audiologist who is a rehabilitation expert.
Let us introduce the concept of tinnitus maskers as well as tinnitus retrenchment therapy here. Now
if a patient isnt able to find satisfactory answers to his problem through medicine and its giving him
sleepless nights, then tinnitus maskers can provide a relief.
Tinnitus basically is an internal sound which the sufferer perceives in absence of any sound in the
environment. This helps us understand that the perception of tinnitus can be reduced if there are
external sounds which actually exist. In almost all tinnitus cases, the disturbance increases during
night time when external sounds are minimal. Let us understand through a corollary; if you switch
on a torch light during the day time that too on a clear sunny day and point it to someones face, it
may not be pinching to him, however if you do the same at night, it can be really disturbing. It is
interesting to note that the intensity of the torch light remains the same at all times just the
perception gets masked during the day due to presence of external lights. We can apply this
corollary to tinnitus as well. There is a device called masker which can generate a white noise which
can be used to mask the perception of tinnitus. This white noise is no ordinary noise like that of
traffic or a generator, it is a researched concept based on sea shore sounds or Zen music etc which
provides a soothing effect to the limbic system as well.
One thing has to be understood clearly, concept of tinnitus masker is to reduce the perception of
tinnitus by diverting the brains attention to a similar external noise. This is a rehabilitative approach
and sometimes may require months to take effect, so one should not expect an overnight magic. In
any way, in absence of any concrete solutions, Tinnitus maskers are the most preferred options as a
non-medicinal treatment having no side effects!

Question: My doctor proposed a surgery and assured tinnitus will be solved. What should I do?
Answer: As stated above, there are many a causes for tinnitus, and the ENT specialist may have
narrowed down to an issue requiring surgical intervention which may also have the roots to tinnitus;
however guarantee to cure tinnitus seems a little bizarre or over-optimistic.
A secondary conclusion to this may be that the doctor is following a hit & trial approach which seem
to benefit at least 10 percent cases!

Different Hearing Aid brands, how they work and which is the best
To update all the curious hearing aid users, there are some of the hearing aid brands which are or
have made a good name in the market are:
Starkey, Oticon, Phonak, Widex, Resound, Unitron, Intertone, Siemens, Sonic etc. Out of these
brands Siemens still holds a major share of the market although it is steadily declining due to
growing presence of other companies such as Starkey & Phonak.
The hearing aid market is split amongst US & Europe & China primarily where in china is dumping in
extremely low quality hearing aids (which are no less than loud speakers and will probably do more
damage to hearing than repair), and US & Europe are playing on their extremely intelligent sound
processing algorithms thereby trying to give maximum comfort and naturalness to the user.
It is funny speaking of china hearing aids and surprise at the same time as well considering a fact
that anything can sell in India. Its not that China will manufacture only cheap products, but the truth
that unaware Indian population will buy anything as long as it does not pinch the pocket. Well trust
this that wearing a Rs. 1000 hearing aid will only leave you worse off. The other day I was travelling
to Pune where I found these hearing aids being sold like pan cakes at a posh JM road outlet in Pune.
But its not a surprise as if killer Cigarettes can sell why not a china hearing aid.
Denmark gives us Widex & Oticon, Switzerland gives us Phonak & Unitron and US gives us Starkey
hearing aids.
Widex was like a revolution in the digital hearing aid category when it commenced operations and
widex algorithms were appreciated all across the northern India where its headquarters are at
Chandigarh.
Phonak and Unitron are now a part of Sonova Group with a common management where Phonak is
always known as the first line of product and Unitron is known as the second line of product. There
was a scenario where markets taked that products which were phased out by Phonak were inducted
by Unitron thus making Unitron a lesser preferred option.
Starkey Hearing aids entered the Indian market with a bang. Their Destiny Series of hearing aids
were instant success and people began to appreciate the technology of this company. The company
didnt stop there and within a short span of time bought in features that captured the markets
attention by far, not to mention the algorithm formula eStat which was more appreciated amongst
the contemporaries. Hearing Aid market was revolutionized with the entrance of 100 percent
invisible hearing aids which the market was waiting for. For hearing impaired individuals with a
travelling profile, Starkey also introduced options like T2on demand and T2 on remote which were
patients of this hearing aid company and allowed the user to get his hearing device programmed on
the go while not having to visit the audiologist. Starkey hearing aids made a name out of these one
after the other technological revolutions best of which was introducing extreme power CIC
(completely in canal) hearing aids to provide cosmetic benefit to patients with severe to profound
hearing loss. This features till date is unmatched as in other hearing aid brands, the CICs cover upto a
loss of 85dB only.
Phonak is another brand of hearing aids known for its quality. The revolutionary Sound Recover
technology which began with the Naida Series in phonak was indeed gap filler for patient with no
response regions in their audiometry graphs. Naida Series and corresponding hearing aids from
phonak provided a much valuable benefit to paediatric and profound loss cases.
Resound revolutionized the hearing aid industry by introducing wireless streaming in hearing aids.
This device was capable of connecting to several media sources through different streaming devices
using radio frequencies. The technology was improvised by starkey which created a single streaming
device for all media rather than different devices for different media.
Now a days all companies are trying to introduce similar hearing aid technologies with price
modifications thereby trying to be single source for all kinds of hearing devices.
We at India Speech and hearing Clinic, however understand the intricacies in the performance of a
well designed hearing aid device and a copied technology and their performance for different
patients.
If you have any queries regarding any of these hearing aid products or type of hearing aids available
you can contact us and we shall be eager to assist you. Moreover if you seek to purchase any of this
hearing aids in pune, Hyderabad or delhi you can contact us through our numbers- 8237037087.

Why is it that hearing aid prices are always a concern 80% of the population who require it. I have
come across hundreds of cases who when recommended to buy a hearing aid in excess of Rs.
10,000, return back a frown! Its not that money is a problem in most cases, its just the priority they
give to their beautiful sense of hearing.
We can go into big showrooms and buy expensive phones, televisions, music system etc, but what
good are either of these if one is not able to clearly hear what comes out of them Problem with
hearing instruments is that those cheap chinese hearing devices which cost Rs. 300-1000 are not
worth it as being analog amplifiers only do damage to the hearing and induce discomfort in noise.
Digital programmable hearing aids that too with a linear amplification are priced at Rs. 10,000
onward.
Phonak which is a leading hearing aid company has introduced a 2 channel digital programmable
hearing aid for Rs. 7,500 which makes it the cheapest digital hearing aid in India from a reputed
hearing aid manufacturer. Idea is to yet again break the monopoly of siemens, alps etc companies
which have been pumping in cheap semi digital & analog products in the Indian market ever since.
One of the leading name which still exists till date is danavox 215ut; A product which has been
selling as hot cakes since inception. Its a semi digital hearing device priced at Rs. 6,500. Selling this to
below economy class becomes ideas as there is no room for complaint or adjustment.
Folks in my opinion if you wish to purchase a good hearing device and you wish to know how much
to spend to get a decent quality then I shall say look above Rs. 15,000 mark. The products above this
mark hold some basic features required to produce comfortable sound. Meeting expectations is not
he question here but meeting requisites is definitely assured. Today many of us can spend 10-15
thousand rupees on luxury, fun, trips etc; we can buy gold, property buy we fail to buy back our lost
hearing through a good device.

For any queries, comments suggestions, you can write in to us and we shall answer the same. If your
suggestions are beneficial for the society, then we shall publish the same in our website testimonial

Buy Hearing aids- financing options
If you have been recommended to buy hearing aids for yourself, the first thing that comes to mind is
the cost of hearing aids. Most of the hearing professionals shall confirm that digital variety of
hearing aids with noise management features are the better hearing aid options compared to analog
or semi-digital varieties. Now apparently digital hearing aids are more expensive and force people
with lesser budgets to re-think their requirement. Let us discover the different financing options for
hearing aids:
1. CGHS Beneficiary: If you have served in the central government and are covered under CGHS
i.e. central govt. health scheme, then you are eligible for some reimbursement from the
government. However dont think that process is very easy as practically you have to get a
hearing test done subsequent to which you have to have a written consent from a
government ENT doctors, you need to have 3 quotations for the hearing device you need to
purchase and then your department may grant you the reimbursement. Worst part, the
govt. ENT shall recommend which hearing aid is to be used!
Although the system is good but where the problem occurs is that the doctor certifying your
hearing aids doesnt consult any audiologist and most of the places are plagued with bias
and corruption! However if you get through all this then as per the government mandate
which is not very logical, you are eligible for the following:
a. Body worn/ pocket modal type- Rs. 2,500
b. Analog BTE- Rs. 7,000
c. Digital BTE- Rs. 20,000
d. ITC/CIC- Rs. 25,000
Personally the flaw with this is that Analogue/ body worn hearing aids shouldnt be there in
the system at all. I dont say that these hearing aids are not beneficial; rather these hearing
aids will only benefit people with profound hearing losses. Issue arises when certifying
doctor starts writing analog hearing aids for everyone without having much knowledge
about hearing requirements or hearing instruments. The CGHS Beneficiary is forced to
comply with the same.
Another issue arises when ceiling for Digital BTE & ITC/CIC prices are fixed to Rs. 20,000 &
Rs. 25,000. What the policy makers in the government dont understand is that CIC & BTE
hearing aids can be of the same price and it depends again on the requirement of the
individual his/her hearing loss, Canal Size, otology issues with the ear etc. This is again pretty
much the function of a qualified hearing professional to analyze the requirement of the
individual failing which the patient is forced to compromise with whatever is available.
Patient being at the receiving end with no knowledge never gets the best out of the govt.
funds and several private hearing centers and hearing aid companies in our country try to
lure the recommending govt. doctor so as to give a biased consent.
This problem can be solved if patient can understand his requirement from the hearing
professional and seek recommendation from govt. ENT doctor basis his comfort.
2. EMI Schemes: if you are not a CGHS beneficiary then there still a hope to finance this
through EMI facility. However this facility is not available everywhere. Firstly, dont be
mistaken, there are no bank approved loans like home loans, car loans etc for purchasing
hearing aids. However some hearing centers have installed EDC machines from various
banks which allow the conversion of one-time payment into easy installments of 3 months
to 6 months. However there are charges for the same in terms of interest and if you find a
center which offers you interest free EMI then definitely the center is allowing you some
discount whereas it is bearing the charges on its own. Most of the centers shy away from
providing such schemes unless they have to kill their competition and the industry isnt big
enough for banks to start providing such schemes to the users.
3. Health Cards & Arogyashree & Insurance: Most of the health card schemes do no cover
hearing aids, neither do the insurance; only in certain hospitals such as ENT hospital in Koti,
Hyderabad and similar like it, they provide non-digital hearing aids under arogyashree
scheme for free. Problem with this is that most of the time the stock isnt sanctioned due to
red-tapism and all the more you are getting non-digital hearing device. Arogyashree is
beneficial for children below 2 years of age and born deaf as they can get reimbursement on
cochlear implantation which cost in excess of 5lakhs. However, these poor beneficiaries still
have to struggle for finances for post-operative rehabilitation in subsequent months.

For middle class and above, it is easy to buy hearing aids provided there is a thought for it and a will
to do justice to their impaired sense of hearing. Most of the people with decent pocket also shy
away from wearing hearing aids due to social stigma or simply their un-awareness. I have personally
come across several cases who know they have a hearing problem yet they ask this question-is it
necessary to wear a hearing aids or can I do without it? Ignorance they will never follow if they have
a heart condition. We spend much just to keep living, just to keep breathing; however some are
ready to compromise on the quality of their life by letting go of their sense of hearing. What good is
a world if you cannot hear the sounds of it!
Looking for invisible hearing aids?
Wearing hearing aids is a stigma and although we understand this fact that human body doesnt
come with a guarantee on the parts, yet when our hearing power gives way we are reluctant to use
the means to substitute it. Hearing aids are often ignored due to several reasons one of which is the
visibility. Everybody wants to look naturally perfect and hence many shy away from wearing visible
aids to hearing. This thought led the hearing aid manufacturers to develop more invisible options for
the hearing impaired. CIC or completely in canal hearing aid was the first of its kind which provided
least visibility when worn. Now technology has moved further ahead to develop even smaller parts
to bring out a 100% invisible hearing aid.
Let us understand what IIC or invisible in canal hearing aids are, whether these will be suitable for
you and how to order these hearing aids.
Firstly when we talk of 100% invisible hearing aids, we need to understand that this is not a visibly
invisible hearing aids; IIC is a custom made hearing aid which goes deep into the ear canal and hence
it is not visible from outside. As you see in the diagram below, the red one is a CIC hearing aids and
black one is an IIC hearing aid which goes and sits towards the end of the ear canal just before the
ear drum or tympanic membrane.

Let us understand if this hearing aid is suitable for all individuals or not.
IIC hearing aid has all the components in a miniaturized form i.e. a microphone, a receiver, a
microchip, amplifier and everything is integrated together through circuitry. Before suggesting an IIC
for any individual, the hearing professional has to take into account the hearing loss, canal volume
and the bend in the canal. Then very carefully, a measurement or impression of the canal is to be
taken deep enough to position the hearing aid as close as possible to the tympanic membrane. The
Ideal IIC sits 2mm before the ear drum and is black in color. Suitability of IIC is best with a straight
ear canal with 8mm x 8mm dimensions. However all ear canals are not straight and some may have
an S-shapes bend which hinders the depth of placement of IIC. Moreover if the canal does not have
a volume of 8mm x 8mm and is narrower, then invisibility is compromised and the hearing aid
cannot be inserted to the required depth. Although IIC uses the smallest microphone & receivers yet
there is a minimum it requires to give that required cosmetic effect.
Another suitability criteria for IIC Hearing aids is the hearing loss of the individual. Most of the IIC
hearing aids cover up to 80dB of hearing loss with the existing technology. If an individuals hearing
loss exceeds this then IIC becomes unsuitable. Starkey IIC hearing aids are a little more promising as
they have a covering range of up to 100dB in the high frequencies. Hearing professional must take
these into consideration.
In India most of the hearing professionals would shy away from taking that deep an impression and
all the more the regular impression material which is used across India is slightly harder hence
inappropriate for IIC impression purpose. We require a softer material, a vented otoblock (which is a
cotton which prevents the material from touching the tympanic membrane) which disallows
pressure to be built in the canal and an impression gun which mixed the material with hardner
automatically in appropriate proportion.
If you wish to order IIC then all of the above applies to you and more so you need help of an
experienced hearing professional.
You must also be aware about the costs and price of IIC hearing aids in India. There are several
companies which have bought IIC hearing aid in India the first one of which is Starkey. Following
Starkey Oticon and Phonak did the same.
Starkey IIC hearing aid price in India Starts from around a lakh of rupees and go up to 2.8lacs for
each piece. If budget is less then Oticon has an option for IIC hearing aids called Ria Pro. This
hearing aid is priced at Rs. 80,000 and covers up to 80dB of hearing loss. Oticon has other options for
Rs. 1,75,000 and 2,50,000. Phonak is the latest entrant in the IIC hearing aid segment with prices
starting from Rs. 70,000.
If these prices are more for your pocket then as a hearing professional we can provide you with
shallower versions of a CIC hearing aid which are better than a CIC but less than an IIC Hearing aid.
These hearing aids are prices from Rs. 16,000 and above.
Hearing aid battery
Once you purchase any hearing aid, its accessories are important and thats what will be the
maintenance or the recurring expenditure. Hearing aid batteries are small button cells with different
sizes. Particularly there are 4 sizes available in hearing aid batteries; these are: Size 10, Size 312, Size
13 & Size 675.
Size 675 is the biggest size of hearing aid batteries and is typically used in Behind the Ear hearing
aids. This battery generally supplies to super power BTE hearing aids and generally lasts from 15-
25days depending on the hearing aid brand.
Size 13 is a middle sized hearing aid battery and is also used in BTE hearing aids devices with a
smaller body. Now a days several hearing aid manufacturers have bought in 13 size batteries for
Power BTE hearing aids. The Battery life with this is generally 12-15 days
Size 10 and Size 312 hearing aid batteries are typically for CIC, ITC, ITE & RIC hearing aids. Seldom
can we find Size 312 batteries being used in a BTE hearing aids device. Size 10 is the smallest of all
hearing aid batteries and is used for CIC or IIC hearing aids (completely in canal or Invisible in canal).
Typically a Size 10 battery lasts for 4-7 days depending on the hearing aid output and usage. Size 312
battery can be used for super power CICs to uphold the battery life to about 5-7 days. Generally Size
312 batteries are used for ITC, ITE & RIC hearing aids to give them a better battery life.
Battery life is always a pinch in hearing aids especially in a country like India. Siemens bought in a
Rechargeable hearing aid battery which also does not provide much cost advantage as the battery
itself is expensive, the charger has to be additionally bought in, the life is 1-2 days and maximum
number of charging recycles are around 300-400. More over these are alkaline batteries and there
no much cost advantage for them.
Typically hearing aids use Zinc-Air batteries which generate 1.2v to 1.4v of charge through oxidation
of zinc. These hearing aid batteries produce the most stable output which is most important for a
hearing aid since hearing aid output must not go down as the battery is depleting. The only issue
with Zinc-Air Batteries is that if proper care is not taken during production to safeguard against
air/oxygen, the entire yield can be defective at once. Moreover, once the seal is removed by the
user, the battery discharge starts whether or not you are using it.
Rayovac, Vartha & Zenipower are some of the most prominent companies supplying to the world
market. The product may be marketed under different names or under the hearing aid brand itself.
Rayovac produce suffered majorly in India with too many complaints of defective or discharged
batteries. Vartha which brings in Powerone brand of hearing aid batteries has still maintained a
decent reputation.
Up to the time when hearing aid batteries had mercury as a component in them their disposal was a
major environmental concern! Now-a-days, hearing aid battery manufacturers are producing
mercury free batteries which are good for disposing and recycling.
Hearing aid battery price in India are generally around Rs. 180-200 for a pack of 6 cells. However in
metro cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune etc you may find dealers
providing some or the other schemes.
If you wish to buy hearing aid batteries of any size from us then we are running the following deal:

CROS hearing aid
CROS or Contralateral Routing of Offside Signals is a hearing aid meant for individuals with unilateral
or one-sided hearing loss. CROS hearing aids are the most efficient concept providing excellent
benefit to dynamic individuals with hearing loss on either side.
Unilateral hearing loss is not uncommon and more problematic is how to deal with these. In these
cases the better side responds to all situations and putting a hearing aid on the poorer side also does
not provide any good discrimination since better ear has taken over that function. Most of the
individuals using regular hearing aids on the poorer side to meet the demands of a challenging
hearing environment are saddened with the benefit they receive. Although its not the fault of the
hearing device, its their system which doesnt respond to the sound stimulation. It becomes
increasingly difficult in a situation such as a group discussion to perceive speech from the poorer
side.
CROS concept involves putting a transmitter on the poorer side and a receiver on the better side.
The transmitter picks up the signals coming from the poorer direction and sends then to the receiver
which is placed in the better ear. This technique aids the user to get better discrimination of sounds
from either of the side without having to stress much. The concept is well appreciated in cases
where hearing loss on the poorer side crosses profound stage.

There is another situation where one side hearing loss is profound but the other side also is impaired
to some extent. In this case the user can be provided with BiCROS hearing aid which also included an
amplifier on the better side which works as any other hearing aid. This helps the user get better
sound on the impaired better side as well as signals from the poorer side.
Phonak is one hearing aid manufacturer which has bought in CORS hearing aids in India. The price
for CROS hearing aids in India starts from Rs. 50,000. BiCROS shall require a hearing aid also on the
other side which again will be in excess of Rs. 50,000 .
If you wish to try a CROS hearing aid with us you can contact us @ 8237037087 or just fill in the form

Hearing aid Center
About ISAHC hearing aid Center
ISAHC is a specialized Hearing aid center headquartered in Pune serving Pune & Mumbai. At ISAHC
hearing aid center we specialize in all kinds of hearing aids and assistive listening devices. Our
approach to hearing aids is practical and scientific and is divided into different stages:
Stage one: Hearing Test and evaluation
It is quintessential to conduct a hearing test also known as pure tone audiometry. This test gives us
the exact hearing thresholds of the individual. We also take up the history of the individual to
understand the roots and progression of his hearing loss. Along with this we need to understand the
discrimination ability of the individual which can be assessed through a simple SDT/SRT Test.
Obtaining discrimination scores of the individual helps us understand what kind of amplification is
required in terms of Hearing aids for the individual.
Stage 2: Hearing aid trial
At ISAHC hearing aid center we believe in providing 1
st
hand experience to the user about Hearing
aids. We make the user understand that hearing aids are an artificial source of sound in other words
we are digitally amplifying and reproducing sounds through hearing aids to meet the requirement of
the individual; therefore adjustment with this new way of hearing is necessary and that is what is a
part of rehabilitation for the individual. In certain cases we also perform aided audiometry if further
assessment is required to understand the discrimination and adaptation of the user.
At ISAHC hearing aid center we ensure that hearing aid trial is conducted before purchase of the
hearing aid instrument and all aspects pertaining to the hearing machine is explained in details to
the user.
Stage 3: Hearing aid Fitting
ISAHC hearing aid center believes in providing a personal touch to the user hence we encourage user
to be present during the time of Hearing aid fitting. This way we get a first-hand understanding of
comfortability of the user. Hearing aid programming basis the audiogram is one things and comfort
of the individual can be another; this difference can be minimized if user is present during the time
of the hearing aid fitting. Use, care & maintenance of hearing aid devices is another important
section which needs to be clearly explained to all first time users. It is this care and maintenance of
the hearing aid which will ensure long life to this electro-acoustic device.
Stage 4: Hearing Rehabilitation
The reason behind success of ISAHC as a famed hearing aid center is the fact that we believe in
hearing rehabilitation. At ISAHC we make users understand that hearing aid is not a medicine which
will work wonders overnight! Hearing aid is a rehabilitative device which needs to be tuned to
maximum comfort. This requires participation and patience from the users side as well i.e. there has
to be a precise feedback from the user which can help us understand the acceptance, adaptation
and comfort though hearing aid basis which we can tune the device to utmost precision for the user.

ENT Doctor
Hearing problems- ENT Doctor Vs Audiologist
If one has a trouble with hearing, first thing that comes to mind to mind is an ENT Doctor! There was
a survey done in the US by a leading Hearing aid company wherein they asked random people who
they will approach if they had a hearing problem. 90% of the people answered that they will
approach their doctor and more specifically and ENT Doctor. Only 10% of the people were aware of
the existence of Audiologist. When it comes to India even in forward cities like Hyderabad, Pune,
Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi etc the existence of Audiologists is not known to a majority of the
population other than those associated with this field or those who have had a need for an
audiologist in the past.
So let us put the question on you. Are you aware of difference in job roles of an ENT Doctor and an
Audiologist? Let us explain..
There are two sides to a treatment, one is the medicinal and other is rehabilitative. An ENT Doctor
deals with the medicinal/surgical side of the treatment whereas an audiologist deals with
rehabilitative and diagnostic side of the treatment. Both ENT Doctor and Audiologists are specialists
in their field and both require each other to effectively treat the patient. Whom to approach is a
question indeed which is dependent on the problem of the individual.
Before any of the specialists proceed with the solution of the hearing problem, investigation is
compulsory! We need to determine what kind of hearing loss is it and how much hearing loss it is.
This is the job of Audiologist. So if you have no pathology i.e. infection, or ear pain etc and are
generally experiencing difficulty with hearing, you must first consult an Audiologist unless you wish
to spend extra money on consultations! If during investigations i.e. after doing hearing tests the
audiologists determines that particular variety of hearing loss requires medicinal or surgical
procedure the he shall himself recommend you to an ENT; however if its a hearing loss which is
untreatable by medicine or surgery, then you need to go in for a hearing aid device and not matter
what you may hope for, there is no other solution.
Below are conditions where you need to consult audiologist or ENT Doctor:
ENT Doctor
1. If there is a sudden hearing loss- you need immediate doses of steroids
2. If there is pain in the ear along with hearing loss
3. If there is wax in the ear and your ability to hear seems to be reduced
4. If there is an ear discharge and your ability to hear seems reduced
5. If there is an infection
6. If there is a ringing sound in the ear and your hearing power seems low as well
7. If there is a one sided hearing loss
8. If you have cold/cough and simultaneously your hearing power is low
Beauty of either of these is that before proceeding with the treatment of any of the above, the ENT
Doctor shall refer you to the audiologist himself for detailed testing. However, ENT may do some
examinations himself and get an idea of what may be the issue, accordingly he can direct you for a
corresponding hearing test.
For any condition wherein you have a hearing loss, you can simply visit an audiologist and get
yourself a hearing checkup done. Even for the above mentioned issues, a qualified audiologist can
test you and recommend you to an ENT doctor thereby helping you skip a step and time. Therefore
its not wrong to first consult the audiologist and then with all the reports visit an ENT Doctor.
The most irritating phenomena an audiologist or an ENT doctor face is when either of them start
intruding on the others space. It so happens that an audiologist in order to sell his hearing aid
ignores the fact that medicinal treatment may have a positive effect on the patient or the ENT
doctor ignores the fact that his patient requires a hearing aid and unnecessarily procrastinating will
not deliver anything. In India, the ENT doctors enjoy more privilege with the patients wherein
patients go by the word of their ENT Doctor. This leads to complications in relations between
audiologist and ENT Doctor as the doctor will try to guide the audiologist with rehabilitative
treatment trying to maintain his repo with the patient. Unaware and un-understanding patients also
give less priority to the audiologists words as hearing aids are not something they want to spend
their money on. In the end what happens is a stalemate for the patient.
Audiology is an upcoming specialization in India and indeed is much needed. At India Speech and
Hearing Centre we propagate this subject and in fact hold regular free check-up camps to spread
awareness on the sense of Hearing. We are hearing professionals and consultants guiding you to the
best treatment for your hearing problem.

How to find a Hearing Aid Centre in India
If you have a hearing loss and have been recommended by your doctor to go in for a hearing aid
then you need to find yourself a decent hearing aid centre. Question is how to look for one. Of
course you can call to ISAHC in Pune or Mumbai or Delhi and well take care of your hearing aid
requirements; but let us understand how generally people tend to look for a hearing aid centre.
1. Online: Internet is the biggest medium available at your disposal if you are searching for a
hearing aid centre near you. India is preparing a recipe for 100% digital literacy by the year
2021. One can imagine how huge this number is when it comes to serving 130cr+
population. At the moment around 10% of the Indian population is internet literate which
still puts the figure around 10-15cr individuals. Out of these atleast 5-10% will be suffering
from Hearing loss and may require hearing aids which put this number in lakhs! These are
the individuals who may need to be served by around 1000 hearing aid centres across the
length and breadth of our country. Hence if you are looking for a hearing aid centre online
then you may be probably one amongst several lakh individuals and rest assured you may
find the right hearing aid centre also through the internet. Audiology is a knowledge
oriented rehabilitative subject and several decent hearing aids centres are thriving to put
more and more information online for users to get aware about growing hearing problems.
Internet infact also provides options to users to compare from hearing aids centre to the
other in and around their area.
You will be surprised to note that online searches for Hearing aid centre is on the rise
especially in the southern India wherein internet users are querying for hearing aids in
Bangalore or hearing aids in Chennai through Google!
2. ENT Doctor: Your ENT Doctor can also guide you to his known hearing aid centre, although
this may or may not be the best hearing aid centre for you as only a limited hearing aid
centre owners will approach the ENT doctor and apprise them of their presence. A Hearing
aid centre has an audiologist who specializes in the treatment through hearing aids,
however if you realize that your hearing aid centre is dealing with limited brands of hearing
aids then they may not provide you with the best devices in your budget. You must look for
a hearing aid centre with multiple brands. Majority of the hearing aid buyers still count on
their ENT doctors referral for purchasing hearing aids.

Internet and ENT Doctors are the only reputed sources suggesting a hearing aid centre to the best of
their knowledge to their patients. Audiology is a little known subject and awareness on hearing
losses is less. This reckons least number of direct walkins to audiologists.
At ISAHC, we often get referrals from word of mouth having served hundreds of individuals,
however, for people trying to look for us, its still a challenge. As a hearing aid centre we often do a
lot of residential hearing check-up camps, newspaper advertisements etc. however there are several
to whom it still goes un noticed. If you are looking for a hearing aid you can write to us by filling the

Siemens Hearing aids- a dilemma for true hearing professionals
Siemens Hearing aids in India have made their mark if not by quality but by quantity and market
penetration. As a hearing aid dispenser at ISAHC, I have often come across individuals demanding
siemens hearing aids very specifically or at least enquiring for siemens hearing aid prices at my
centre. Somehow as a hearing professional, Siemens hearing aids have never attracted my attention
at all. There are reasons for my ignorance to deal with this brand but these reasons definitely have a
ground and seem logical when explained to the end user as well.
Seimens hearing aids are amongst the oldest hearing instruments put to use in India by hearing
professionals for the hearing impaired population. The fame of siemens as a name in India has
added to a deeper penetration of siemens hearing aids brand throughout the length and breadth of
our country. Work done by this hearing aid manufacturer with the government at a time when other
western companies were inexistent in this third world has glorified this hearing aid manufacturer
and firmed its foothold in India. As per the market, siemens hearing aids are pegged as the no. 1
selling hearing aid brand till date i.e. in terms of quantity.
Siemens however have off-late by policy or by virtue of their representatives have killed their market
and quality themselves. Many of you may ask how and my response to that is throwing light on
audiology as a science and its disrespect by this hearing aid manufacturer. But first let us analyze
some facts. Other than siemens, several hearing aid manufacturers such as Starkey, Oticon, Phonak
etc were seldom present when required even up to year 2005 in India. Within a decade the scenario
changed and these unknown hearing aid brands emerged up to a level wherein they equal siemens
hearing aids sales. How was it that a business leader couldnt stop attack on its market it built
through several decades?
The last 5 years in hearing aid industry have opened my eyes towards how I look at this rehabilitative
treatment for the hearing impaired. Selling a hearing aid here is not the solutions to remain in the
market but more than that is the interaction, follow up, after sales services and technological
upgrade year on year. These are the attributes which siemens hearing aid brand has failed leading to
reduction in its market share in India. This brand may have been the older one, but it definitely has
looked upon hearing professionals and end users as non-affording individuals who can be disposed
with lower quality hearing aids. I dont mean to rant here but in the last five years, I have never seen
a siemens representative/ rehabilitation expert coming down to my centres and explaining their
technology and if at all it can benefit the Indian hearing impaired population. Do they see our
country as a dump yard where they can just throw in whatever they want? Or are they too egoistic
to reach out to the people who appreciated them! You may ask however as to why siemens hearing
aids are still continuing in our market. This is because just to sell and make money, several of our
fellow hearing professionals still support and ignore the cause they are associated to.
In year 2014, the hearing aid industry across India touches Rs. 600crs in turnover, its time for
educated sane minded individuals from the government to look into this rehabilitative side of
treatment for the hearing impaired with greater care and scrutiny. As it is cochlear implantation in
India is liaised with bias and monopoly, we must not allow the same to happen for hearing aids.
As for the end users, one needs to be educated and aware of this rehabilitative treatment. If you
consider hearing aids as a product then you are most likely to be dissatisfied by purchasing hearing
aid instruments from manufacturers who dont care about your needs. However if you understand
your hearing requirements and what the world is offering you for your hard earned money you
spend, you wont come demanding a siemens hearing aid!; rather youll demand a hearing aid which
meets your requirements.
I must specify that this article isnt to degrade the siemens hearing aids brand, but it is to educate
the users to be more aware of this industry and its emerging trends. Siemens hearing aids
manufacturer is one of the biggest in India and there has to be a responsibility of all such
manufacturers to provide the best to the market rather than just sell anything to the unaware users.

users complain of not being able to get complete support from their hearing aids especially in
challenging situations where noise is more or distance of the output source is more. Traditional

necessary programmed amplification, and deliver the final sound at ear level. In this case even if the
source of sound is far, to the user it is at the ear level thus making it easy for the individual to
understand. More over unlike traditional hearing aid devices, the user also has an option enabled to
increase and decrease volume through a remote control device thus helping him adjust immediately
to the situational change.
First wireless hearing aids were bought in India by a company called GN Resound. The product was
named Alera and used multiple accessories for multiple situational challenges. These wireless
hearing aids were a revolution and Indian population gave good welcome to this technology at its
first acquaintance. Slowly several other companies such as Oticon, Intertone, Starkey also
introduced wireless hearing aids with different features for different types of hearing losses.
