Abstract-The number of human language which
used for daily speech are far too great. Different
people on any continent practicing different
language to communicate with others. The same
situation goes to the Islamic environment, where
lots of different language from different Arab tribe
and also other Muslim around the world. The holy
revelation sent down to human following the
specific language in order to make sure the human
knows how to read it and easy to understand.
Messenger from the same tribe and understand the
same language also chosen among themselves so
that any more issue will not be a problem. Natural
Language Processing helps mankind in translating
all of different languages into the languages that
the human understand. Through a better methods
used, Natural Language Processing also can be
used to be a tool to translate al-Quran as well as
helping the researchers to understand the content
of al-Quran better. Our objectives is to study
Natural Language Processing and its relation with
Islam through the context of interpretation,
implementation and methods of the Natural
Language Processing with Islam.

1. INTRODUCTION
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a
field of computer science, artificial
intelligence, and linguistic concerned with
the interactions between computers and
human languages. As such, NLP is related to
the area of human-computer interaction.
NLP widely used by most of the people
on the net as the main solution to translate
any input into a language that is needed.
However, many challenges in NLP involve
natural language understanding, which is
enabling computer to derive meaning from
human or natural language input and others
involve natural language generation.

In the branch of artificial intelligence, the
modern NLP algorithms are based on
machine learning, especially statistical
machine learning. The paradigm of machine
learning is different from that of most prior
attempts at language processing. Prior
implementations of language-processing task
typically involved the direct hand coding of
large sets of rules. The machine-learning
paradigm calls instead for using general
learning algorithms to automatically learn
such rules through analysis of large corpora
of typical real-world examples.
Many different classes of machine
learning algorithms have been applied to
NLP tasks. These algorithms take as input a
large set of features that are generated from
the input data. Some of the earliest-used
algorithms, such as decision trees, produced
systems of hard if-then rules similar to the
systems of hand-written rules that were then
common.
Nevertheless, there is quite less research
about the usage of NLP in conjunction with
Islamic studies as most of the research being
carried out from the research from outside of
a Muslim country. The purpose of this study
been made is to carried out the research of the
relationship of Islamic studies together with
the technology in one of the artificial
intelligence branch, which is the Natural
Language Processing. Stated by Eric, Claire,
Kais, Majdi, Abdul-Baque (2009), Al-
Quran is views as a rich data-set of Artificial
Intelligence and Machine Learning
research. From the quotation, clearly shown
that how al-Quran is already related to NLP.

3
As being said earlier, NLP is widely used
for word translation. It is because the
characteristics of NLP to learn and
understanding the natural language of human
and converted it to the other language by a
machine. Because of this, many researcher
managed to use it for many kinds of things
and providing a wide benefits to the society.
However, the Islam community is not to be
excluded. A research being carried out by
Eric Atwell, Claire Brierley, Kais Dukes,
Majdi Sawalha and Abdul-Baquee Sharaf
(2011), they produced a range of software
and corpus datasets of research on Modern
Standard Arabic and more recently Quranic
Arabic. Their work on Quranic Arabic corpus
linguistics has attracted widespread interest,
not only from the Arabic liguists but also
from Quranic students. From it, they
continuing it to a new proposal for further
research, which is the Quranic Knowledge
Map. Their research has made it easy for
most of people who want to study Quran as
their ways of using NLP in converting the
Arabic language to a language that can be
understand by others through machine
learning. The dependencies on the syntactic
annotation showing grammatical structure of
verses, text-mining and machine-learning to
classify Quran chapter and verses is being
implemented in the context of NLP.
At the end of this research, we hope that
we could answer our research question that
we produced below in order to make sure that
we will always stay in the main objectives
and complete it without anything important
being left behind. The questions are:
What is the relationship of NLP and
Islam?
To what extent does NLP can be
implemented for any part of Islamic
worldview?
What is the benefit given by using
NLP in Islamic life?

2. RESEARCH METHOD
To conduct this research, sources from
the internet were searched in order to gain a
lot of information. A total of 4 journal or
article were used as references to make some
comparison in order to pursue a precise result
from the research. Furthermore, about 4
Quranic verse were used to compare and
prove that NLP was already been used in the
early days by Islam.
Since the research was more on doing
study and not really involving the others,
there was no questionnaire produced.
The result also will be separated into
westerner group and the Muslim group. From
those results too, we will manage to make a
better comparison between all of the group
existed on earth.
3. FINDINGS

1) Natural Language Processing in Western and
Quran Usage
Through the westerner perspectives, NLP
used widely in translation method. As simple
as Turing Test, which is a test of a machines
ability to exhibit intelligent behavior
equivalent to or indistinguishable from a
human, is used human input or language as a
source of interaction for them before they
could interpret everything and responds back
to the audience.

Figure 1. NLP Translating Technique
From figure 1, it shows 1 of the way how
NLP works. NLP may translating and
understand a human input by recognize it
under several class of grammar rules. From
the grammar rules, it will then arrange them
accordingly and group all of the sentence into

4
some designated grammar rules group which
will create a sentence through the grammar
rule grouping. This method is easy to be
recognize as Syntactic Plan.
Indeed, there are still some other
ways such as pragmatic plan and semantic
plan. Since syntactic can be consider as one
of the easiest among the NLP processing and
plan, this research gave full attention to it in
order to achieve our target.
However, in the perspective of
Islamic worldview, the concept was almost
the same as it also converting languages. But,
the implementation of humans heart
purification and building a personality of a
person were stressed here. Islam is a religion
that perfectly taught everything. Because of
it, anything in this world, will always be
connected to the hereafter, which the same
goes to the concept of NLP, which will be
used for the mankind benefit in this world and
the eternity life that will come soon.

Figure 2. NLP usage in al-Quran
Referring to figure 2, the
implementation of grammar rule in order to
translate the verse into other language and
acceptable by the computer to read and
interpret it was applied to the al-Quran.
2) Prove of Natural Language Processing in Islam
As most of todays findings were made
by most of the westerners, the Muslim
community did not realize that Islam already
introduced so many of the science and
technology findings in al-Quran, which
already been told from Allah to Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH) through His angle,
Gabriel.
And indeed, We have eased the Quran in your
tongue that they might be reminded.[Ad-Dukhan:85]
From the surah mentioned above, in surah
ad-Dukhan verse 85, Allah stated that He
made the Quran in the language that can be
understand by the human at the time. If try to
recall from the past revelation to mankind,
some of them are in different languages such
as in Hebrew. It is because at the moment the
revelation sent down to the Messenger at that
time, the community that receiving it was
using Hebrew as their main language. As al-
Quran was sent down in an Arab
environment, Arabic language were chosen
as the main language for the Quran. This
clearly shows that NLP already been
implemented as different languages are being
used but the way of the implementation is
only known by Him, the Creator of
everything.
Taught man that which he knew not. [Al-
alaq: 5]
As for the above verse which found in
surah al-alaq verse 5, Allah state that Allah
taught people of what we do not now but He
knows it. Also in the revelation of Quran,
Allah tells how the Angel does not know
everything that Prophet Adam (PBUH)
knows as Allah taught him all of the
knowledge that can be gain in Luh Mahfuz.
If we try to relate to the current technology,
Alan Turing has introduced the concept of
Turing Test, which identify the machine

5
intelligence through the identification
between machine and human that cannot be
guest easily and may think that the computer
is the human. Alan Turing said it like that as
computer can be like human, as they could
accept input, interpret it and gives output.
Just the input taken, they need to process it
through Natural Language Processing in
order to understand the word better before it
giving out output.
And We did not send any Messenger except in
the language of his people to state clearly for them,
and Allah sends astray who He wills and guides
whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the
Wise. [Ibrahim: 4]
In the context of computer, it is the computer
is the one that will learn and converting text
into other language that a human can
understand. In Islam, Allah send the
Messenger with the same language used in
order for the human can understand better
about the teaching of Islam. This relationship
really does shows the beauty of Islam that
many others look at it lightly.
In the research conducted by Ali Farghaly
and Khaled Shaalan (2010) stated that the US
department of Homeland Security has the
difficulty in classifying the names of Arabic
people. Therefore, they use the NLP system
to organize it and help them better at it. Any
Arabic document that they does not know
whether it is relevant or not also solved.
And if We had made it non-Arabic Quran, they
would have said, Why are its verses not explained in
detail in our language? Is it a foreign recitation and
an Arab messenger? Say, It is for those who
believe a guidance and cure. And those who do not
believe in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them
blindness. Those are being called from a distant
place. [Fussilat: 44]
In the verse, Allah shows that if they get
the revelation not in their own mother tongue
language, confusion will occur, like the
Homeland Security that get confuse with all
of the Arab name and document. So, to
overcome it, a language of the same being
used is also written on the Quran and used by
the messenger. It is the same like the
Homeland Security case, which they
implementing the NLP method so that they
can translate all of the document and make no
worries out of it.
4. DISCUSSION
As for the discussion, we can identified
that Islam already implement NLP earlier.
Natural Language Processing is not only for
the translation, but also for a better
understanding and avoiding confusion.
As being said earlier, NLP is widely used
for word translation. It is because the
characteristics of NLP to learn and

5. CONCLUSION
As for the conclusion, Allah already
have implement everything that we have
learn in our live. As for artificial
intelligence, Allahs first creation which
is the qalam can write like a human
does. The beauty of Islam always cannot
be imagined with our own mind as it is
too perfect and beyond imagination.
Natural Language Processing also
already been used in the early days as
Allah provides the revelation following
the mother-tongue of the people that will
received it. It is the perfection that we will
never been able to surpass it.
