Reliance Wired Broadband - Wifi with ADSL modem+router guide
Hi,
It looks like there is lot of inaccurate information on connecting Reliance Wired Broadband connection for Wifi. It is possible to do
this and here is a quick guide on doing it using an ADSL modem+router (BSNL's DNA-A211-I is illustrated, you will need to
adapt if your router is a different make). This should help you to connect multiple wired and wifi devices at the same time via the
router. Note that if you want to use a wired modem + a broadband router, this procedure does not hold good. The assumption is that
your broadband input comes in a cable similar to a telephone cable.
Step 1: Physical Connections
Remove the non-wifi router Reliance supplies. Replace it with an ADSL router+modem such as BSNL's DNA-A211-I. The cable
coming from the Reliance splitter should go into the slot named 'DSL' and a LAN cable should be connected from any of the
'Ethernet' slots on one end and to the PC's LAN slot on the other end.
Step 2: Computer LAN settings
Right click on the network properties icon in system tray (in windows) - it should normally read Local Area Connection.

Click Properties - Internet Protocol and set up the values similar to this. Click ok and repair connection by right clicking on the
system tray icon and choosing 'Repair' to be on the safe side.
Step 3: Set up the router
Open the browser and type 192.168.1.1 and enter with user id 'admin' and password 'admin' or 'password'. It should open the router
settings page. If it does not, the router password or settings may have been changed before. You can reset the router by pressing and
holding the reset button with a pin for a few seconds. Some routers also have different user id and password - consult the router
documentation or website.
In the set up screens, go to WAN - Add - and set up vpi/vci as 0/35 as below.

In the next screen, choose 'Connection Type' as 'MAC Encapsulation Routing (MER)' (it is called 'Dynamic Mode' in some routers).
Leave other values as is.
In the next 'WAN IP' screen, set the following selections: Obtain an IP address automatically, Obtain default gateway
automatically, Obtain DNS server addresses automatically.

In the next 'Network Address Translation Settings' screen, check the options Enable NAT, Enable Firewall, Enable WAN Service.
Save settings.
Then go to 'LAN' in the router menu and set to 'Standard mode' and 'Disable DHCP'. It is also possible to have DHCP enabled so that
each device you have is assigned an IP automatically, but I prefer to set up each device manually with an IP. This is particularly
handy if you use torrents and need to forward traffic to a particular machine.

Go to the 'Routing' menu and check 'Enable Automatic Assigned Default Gateway'.
Go to Wireless - Basic page and 'Enable Wireless' if it is not already and put in a name for the wireless connection.

Save and reboot and you should be able to connect from your device.
You will need to repeat the network properties setting with a different last digit (we used 2 above, so go for 3, 4 etc.) for each device
for the device to be able to connect. You will need to key in your reliance broadband login and password on the first device you
connect - it can be a pc or even a mobile phone. That means you can put the router on and connect from your mobile without
needing to put the pc on. On a computer login can be automated using a curl script etc. too.
Once you are able to connect your devices, the following security is highly recommended. Login to the router again and go to
Wireless - Security screen and set authentication and shared keys, that you will need to use from your device to connect. Typical
settings are as in the screen below but you might need to adjust based on what your devices support.
You can also hide the access point if your devices are all connected properly. MAC based filtering of devices can also be set, but I
won't detail that here.
Cheers!

A quick clarification.
The above setup is with an ADSL modem+router. I.e., it is one single box that does both the functions of a modem and router, that
replaces the non-wifi router Reliance supplies.
It is also possible to set up wifi over Reliance wired broadband using a broadband router. In this case, you will retain the non-wifi
modem/router Reliance provides and additionally connect a broadband router. I.e., two separate boxes for modem and router
functions. I have used this setup before and it works equally well; however I don't have a broadband router with me right now to
post a guide for this setup. Just note the input for the box would be different in each case - an ADSL modem+router's input looks like
a telephone cable, while a broadband router takes a LAN type cable for input.
Thanks guys for the reps.
Cheers.

Not able to access from multiple systems
Hi,
I followed your instructions, however I can access the net from only one computer. When I try to access it from another
computer/mobile, I am getting the reliance login page. But can't login as I am already logged in.
suniljoseph said:
That indicates you are not on MER/dynamic mode. Your computer than the router is getting the Reliance IP.
When you are connected to internet from one system, can you check and post what is the IP you have on the computer and on the
router? Your router should have the 123.xxx.xxx.xxx and the PC should have 192.168.1.x if you followed the above procedure
correctly. Also check the network properties for all the other PCs/mobile to make sure they all have 192.168.1.x IPs.
The objective is for the router to get the Reliance IP and all PCs/mobiles to share the connection.

got the idea. however Unless I keep the settings under obtain IP address automatically, I am not able to get to the reliance login
page. I have set the router ip as 192.168.1.2, but I cannot access the router, apparently I am getting connected to reliance. Let me try
doing it all over again.

Are you sure you have the network properties correct in your PC? The gateway and DNS should refer to the router LAN IP, and the
subnet should be 255.255.255.0.

Ok, your router is not being assigned an IP address - you should see an IP address than the DHCP message. Maybe you are being
affected by the issue that used to happen to me once in a while before - the pc gets an IP but router doesn't some times. I have
written about this on my other review thread, and I am not aware of what can be done except wait for a few minutes, when it gets
assigned. What city are you in?
Just to be sure this is the issue and we are not missing something, can you post your router settings pages?
1.
Please mention the modem/router/model/make/number.
seems to be 450BXI.
2.
Also post ipconfig /all
when connected to Reliance in usual manner for analysis by @glass.
Mention if different modem is used.

Hey, I'm on my way to work, I will post the details tomorrow morning. Thanks for your help
Sorry for the delay in getting back. Was busy with work. I am currently using WA3002G4 ADSL router provided by BSNL. I think
that might be the problem, because it does not have MAC cloning facility.
Should I look at other routers?
Any suggestion on router that would work out well for me?
Was thinking about LINKSYS WRT160N and changing the firmware to DD-WRT.
Do I really need an ADSL modem? Will I be able to change the firmware on LINKSYS WRT160N and still connect to reliance?
Any ADSL router should work, and MAC cloning is not necessary unless the issue I mentioned about getting IP for the router exists.
I think if you have a broadband wifi router, you can use it along with the modem/router Reliance has provided. I don't think
firmware change are needed either.
I am currently using WA3002G4 ADSL
1. Follow Post No 1 and No 2 by @glass exactly as given in the screen shots.
Critical Change is "MER" selection.
2. Copy/Paste here.ipconfig /all
when connected to reliance without any change in modem/router.
Procedure
START RUN type cmd Ok
New window
type ipconfig /all
hey,
here are the screenshots.

Good work.
Please confirm whether you could connect to Reliance in multiple systems. ( wifi etc )
If not ( as earlier set up )
in Tcp/Ip properties select Obtain Ip address automatically and also DNS.
I am able to get the reliance webpage on my mobile phone. but if i am logged in the computer, i will get a message that i am already
connected and it will ask whether i want to terminate the connection
