Welcome
Call to worship (together) Lord Jesus, sometimes it is hard when those who seem undeserving are given as much as those who deserve the best. But, Lord, we trust you to give each of us all that we need, and we offer ourselves in your service to give others all that we can, in your name. Amen.
Hymn : 110 Glory be to God the Father 1 Glory be to God the Father, glory be to God the Son, glory be to God the Spirit, great Jehovah, Three in One ! Glory, glory, glory, glory while eternal ages run! 2 Glory be to him who loved us, washed us from each spot and stain ! Glory be to him who bought us, made us kings with him to reign ! Glory, glory, glory, glory to the Lamb that once was slain ! 3 Glory to the King of angels, glory to the Churchs King, glory to the King of nations ! Heaven and earth, your praises bring; glory, glory, glory, glory to the King of Glory bring! 4 Glory, blessing, praise eternal ! Thus the choir of angels sings ; Honour, riches, power, dominion ! Thus its praise creation brings ; glory, glory, glory, glory, glory to the King of kings ! Horatius N. Bonar (18081889) Opening Prayer and Lords Prayer Our father in Heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever Amen

Reading Jonah 3:10-4:11
Story and response based on Matthew 20.1-16 Narrator: Jesus said to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. Chorus: We want work! We want work! We want work! Narrator: After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine oclock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace. Chorus: We want work! We want work! We want work! Narrator: And he said to them, You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three oclock, he did the same. And about five oclock he went out and found others standing around. Chorus: We want work! We want work! We want work! Narrator: And he said to them, Why are you standing here idle all day? They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You also go into the vineyard. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first. When those hired about five oclock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Chorus: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Narrator: Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. Chorus: Its not fair! Its not fair! Its not fair! Narrator: And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. Chorus: Its not fair! Its not fair! Its not fair! Narrator: But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous? So the last will be first, and the first will be last.
Hymn 189 Be still, for the presence of the Lord 1 Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here ; come bow before him now with reverence and fear : in him no sin is found we stand on holy ground. Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here. 2 Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around; he burns with holy fire, with splendour he is crowned : how awesome is the sight our radiant king of light ! Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around. 3 Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place; he comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace: no work too hard for him in faith receive from him. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place. David J. Evans (b.
1957) Sermon Hymn 527 Lord, make us servants of your peace 1. Lord, make us servants of your peace: where there is hate, may we sow love; where there is hurt, may we forgive; where there is strife, may we make one.
2. Where all is doubt, may we sow faith; where all is gloom, may we sow hope; where all is night, may we sow light; where all is tears, may we sow joy.
3. Jesus, our Lord, may we not seek to be consoled, but to console, nor look to understanding hearts, but look for hearts to understand. 4. May we not look for love's return, but seek to love unselfishly, for in our giving we receive, and in forgiving are forgiven.
5. Dying, we live, and are reborn through death's dark night to endless day: Lord, make us servants of your peace, to wake at last in heaven's light. James Quinn (b. 1919) Prayer Hymn 159 Lord, for the years 1 Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided, Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today. 2 Lord, for that word, the Word of life which fires us, speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us, Lord of the word, receive your peoples praise. 3 Lord, for our land, in this our generation, spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care ; for young and old, for commonwealth and nation, Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer.
4 Lord, for our world ; when we disown and doubt him, loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain; hungry and helpless, lost indeed without him, Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign. 5 Lord, for ourselves ; in living power remake us, self on the cross and Christ upon the throne; past put behind us, for the future take us, Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone. Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.
