Its pretty surprising how significant food can be in our lives. Every second advertisement on
TV is about food. In Bangalore, you cant go a couple of kilometres without seeing or
smelling food.
And sometimes, some of these places become a part of our lives more so than others-either
because of the amazing food they serve or the great memories there with friends and
family.
Ask any BMS student where they spend most of their lunch breaks and it would be either
Nandini , Nescafe or the canteen.
But step out of the college campus and youd immediately notice the newly opened
Basavangudi restaurant. This place is best for bisi bisi dosa and strong filter kaapi that gives
Kamat a run for its money. Make it a point to try the maddur vada and bread roast dosa if its
on the menu!
Right next door to Basavangudi Restaurant is Kamat where you get the usual Darshini oota.
But if youre in the mood for delicious rolls head to Auntys Parathas near the back gate of
the college. The noodle rolls are to die for and the masala soda helps you wash it all down.
Ande ka funda is another favourite adda of BMSites. If you arent going to be bothered by
the not-so-clean surroundings, and if all you care about is the food, then you can have some
wonderful rolls, parathas, and even rice dishes during lunch and dinner, served promptly
without burning a hole in your pocket.
Close by is Andhra Spice. Go here for delicious omelettes and typical Andhra-style meals!
For some of the best chaats, however, head over to the small chaat stand next to Base
tuition centre after 6pm. The bun nippat there is just soooper!!
Bangalores best idlis can be found at Brahmins caf near Shankar Matha in Shankarpuram.
Here you eat the chutney with the idlis, and not the other way around! Started in 1965 this
place just serves four items-steaming hot idlis that are perfectly soft, crispy vadas and chow-
chow bath! If youre a sambar-dunker, this place is gonna convert you to the chutney cult!
Close by on the Chutney trail is Vidhyarthi Bhavan, a landmark eatery in Bangalore, which
still has just 9 dishes on its menu as it did when it was opened in 1943. Though it is most
famous for its dosas, my last visit was a disappointment as the dosas now taste only of
dalda, quite unlike the ones in my grandfathers fond recollections. But still worth going here
for the chow-chow bath, vadas and the idli-chutney.
Something that Ill be telling the future generations about however, would be the chocolate
cheese sandwich at Hari Super Sandwich! Situated near Bhimas Jewellers in Jayanagar 3
rd
block, this small hole-in-the-wall eatery serves great sandwiches and chaats. Another must
try is the chilli cheese sandwich!
A short walk away from Hari Super Sandwich and you reach Meghana Foods near Caf
Coffee Day at Jayanagar 4
th
block. Here you can find authentic Andhra biryani that is spicy
and delicious! The boneless chicken biryani seems to be everybodys favourite. Fair warning
though-this place is mostly for the carnivores!
To really indulge the carnivore in you however, make a trip to any of the Lazeez restaurants
in Bangalore. This restaurant serves Mughlai food famous for its richness and ability to take
you closer to heaven-both flavour-wise and health-wise. The double egg double chicken
rolls are the best, though they are a bit on the oily side!
So the next time you want to have quality food that doesnt make a big dent in your
monthly allowance, you know just the right places to head to! Happy feasting, everyone!
