Letter from the Program Director
Greetings
from Cynthia Hutchison
Healing Touch Program Director
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the April Issue of Energy Magazine!
If you havent already heard, Healing Touch
Program has some BIG EXCITING HAPPY
NEWS to share with you all! As of March 23,
2011, Healing Touch Program (HTP) received
international recognition as an Accredited
Provider of Continuing Nursing Education by
the American Nurses Credentialing Centers
(ANCC) Commission on Accreditation. This
means that
HTP is the rst organization exclusively
providing Energy Medicine Continuing Educa-
tion Programs that has achieved this status!
Together as students, practitioners and
instructors of HTP, we are making history in
health care and in the emerging eld of
Energy Medicine
While our founder, Janet Mentgen, put nursing continuing
education in place for HTP in 1993 with the Colorado Nurses
Association (which operates under the ANCC), HTP made
a decision in 2009 to take the next step up in professional
recognition and industry standards for the highest degree of
excellence in nursing continuing education. The accreditation
preparation and application was very rigorous and detailed
and will include ongoing reviews for HTPs adherence to these
high caliber national standards. The prestigious team of nurses
who interviewed us and evaluated our program, found HTP to
be a stellar example in many ways, including our 22 year old
standardized curriculum, the application of Caring Theory and
Science, our attention to professional development, self care,
and holistic practices and principles.
We expect our newly acquired credential to open more
doors not only for HTPs and HTCPs who are nurses, but for
all our practitioners, because the continuing education credits
awarded by ANCC accredited organizations are widely recog-
nized by a variety of licensing and credentialing bodies all over
the world.
With ANCC accreditation in place, we have one national
accreditation down and one to go! As you know, HTP is also
working at a steady pace to apply for accreditation status with
the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
It will accredit our individual practitioners in the eld of health
care whether they are health care professionals or laypersons
with an HTCP. It is for this accreditation that HTP is developing
a written exam for our practitioners. The exam is almost nal-
ized and validated. See the May issue of Energy Magazine and
your next HTP Community Newsletter to learn the latest details
on the next step of this process.
Please join us in CELEBRATING this wonderful accomplish-
ment at our 15th Annual Healing Touch Worldwide Confer-
ence held in San Antonio, Texas, August 25-28th! The future
holds much promise for us as we embrace our paths of healing
through the sacred practice of Healing Touch!

Big, Exciting News!
HTP received recognition as an
Accredited Provider of Continuing
Nursing Education from the Ameri-
can Nurses Credentialing Centers
(ANCC) Commission on Accreditation.
ANCC is the worlds largest and most
prestigious nursing credentialing
organization and is a subsidiary of
the American Nurses Association. This means Healing Touch
Program is the rst organization exclusively providing Energy
Medicine continuing education programs to achieve this status!
ANCC accreditation means that HTP met rigorous standards
that recognize the excellent instruction provided to nurses.
ANCC accreditation reects our commitment to nurses by pro-
viding the highest quality continuing education possible. It reaf-
rms the hard work and dedication of our entire community of
practitioners, instructors and staff, and reinforces the mission
statement of our founder, Janet Mentgen...that Healing Touch
be available in every home, school, hospital and health care
facility!
New You Tube Video - Self Chakra Connection
Awareness about Healing Touch
keeps expanding due to the dedica-
tion of the HT Community. A new
video has been posted, thanks to
Dawn Warnica, titled, Self Chakra
Connection! This video displays this
technique in a clear and understandable fashion. Social media
avenues, like You Tube, are one of the leading ways to raise
awareness in todays world. Thank you Dawn!
Check out the Self Chakra Connection on You Tube. Leave your
comments and help spread awareness about Healing Touch.
Congratulations!
Susan Rotenstreich, HTCP, will receive the American Cancer
Society and Hope Lodge Humanitarian Award in New York
City on May 12, 2011 at the Awards in Medical Excellence
Ceremony. Also being honored are Dr. Allisan Goldfarb, Breast
Cancer Surgeon at Mt. Sinai Hospital, with the Physician of
Distinction Award and Dr. Robert Taub, Director of Mesothe-
lioma Center at Columbia University Medical Center, with the
Collaborator Award.
Susan shared her thoughts about receiving the Humanitar-
ian Award: I am honored to receive this award alongside two
prominent physicians. This is a very important step in recogniz-
ing the validity, and raising the visibility, of Healing Touch in the
medical community. As a volunteer at Hope Lodge I provide
Healing Touch to cancer patients who come to New York from
all around the world to receive extended cancer treatment.
These patients, who cannot afford to stay in a hotel or rent an
apartment, receive free lodging from Hope Lodge. Hope Lodge
embraces the full concept of patient care by offering integrative
therapies like Healing Touch to complement clinical care. Heal-
ing Touch and Hope Lodge are an important partnership.
Healing Touch Program congratulates Susan on receiving the
Humanitarian Award.

Congratulations!
Bonnie Kelley Morrow, past president
of Healing Touch Worldwide Founda-
tion, has received her doctorate in
Natural Health from Clayton College
of Natural Health in Birmingham, AL.
She received it with highest honors.
Bonnie is a certied Healing Touch
Practitioner and Intstructor and has been instrumental in the
foundations ability to raise money and sponsor research and
other projects related to Healing Touch and integrative medicine.

the History of Energy Medicine
This interview (transcript) is between Denise Premschack,
CEO of the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy
and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM) and ISSSEEMs president,
Jacob Lieberman. ISSSEEM is anchored in science and has
pioneered the way for subtle energies and energy medicine
practitioners through education and support of rigorous re-
search for 21 years. (click here)
ISSSEEM and HT Program grew up side by side with HTP
being one year older. Our founder, Janet Mentgen, who stud-
ied and practiced biofeedback before creating Healing Touch,
joined the founders of ISSSEEM in their early years as they
discussed and explored the scientic basis for energy medi-
cine. Today, the full spectrum of professionals who explore
and practice healing arts and energy science, will not only nd
themselves welcome inside ISSSEEMs tent, they will nd their
hearts have led them there. Healing Touch Program is proud
to be afliated with ISSSEEM and will be represented at their
conference this June through Kathy Layte, HTPs Co-Chair of
the Research Advisory Board, who will be presenting at the

M
ost energy modalities, including Healing
Touch, say yes, we do need the other
persons permission or their guardians permis-
sion to give an energy healing. For me, Mary
Ellen Floras explanation of why asking permis-
sion is a good idea makes the most sense. In the
November 2012 A Spiritual Perspective from
www.c-d-m.org Mary Ellen writes, A friend of
mine is a determined healer and often becomes
invasive with her desire to heal. Most of the time
I enjoy her enthusiasm but there are times I
resist her insistence to change me. . . The main
thing I need to learn from my similarities with
my friend is that no one can x, heal or change
someone else. . . We both have lessons about al-
lowing everyone to heal in his or her unique way
instead of the way we wish.
For me, that is often the crux of the matterI want others
to be different than they are. Five years ago a friend of mind
chose death. She was a non-smoker diagnosed with lung
cancer and opted for no biopsy to conrm this and no treat-
ment. She took to her bed to die and did so within a few
weeks. I wanted her to choose life - she refused. She wanted
me to help her die - I refused. However, I did go to her home
every few days to provide Healing Touch. The energy therapy
soothed her and made her more comfortable and perhaps
more. I dont know. I did not try to heal her; I did not try to
grant her wish. I did the work and let it go.
Being unattached to the outcome is a challenge for meI want
people to feel better. I want them to get the healing for which
they came in the form they want. I want them to be pain-free. I
want to help others, often whether theyve asked or not. Theta-
Healing suggests showering people with unconditional love
-- doing so supports people where they are, as they are. I like
that. I shower my friends and non-friends with unconditional
love. I appreciate it when they do the same for me.
Dr. Eric Pearl, in The Reconnection, says You can only offer a
healing; you cant inict a healing. If I, from a place of uncon-
ditional love and wanting only the highest good for the person
(which I recognize I dont know what that is) with no investment
in a particular outcome, give a healing to someone without
prior permission, that healing ows through the universe to the
person. The person either accepts or rejects it. According to Dr.
Pearl, accepting the healing is giving permission.
However, if I feel a need to whisper to the receiver whose situ-
ation improved that I gave him/her a healing, then my intention
was not pureI DID have an investment in a particular out-
come AND I wanted to take credit. Many things occur simulta-
neously in every persons life, any one of which could be the
tipping point toward healing. The universe heals, I do not.
Do I wait for permission to give a healing? Generally yes. I do
not approach random people in the store and ask if they or their
animals would like a healing. Sometimes I do approach friends
and offer a healing, but it is always a gift given freely, not a busi-
ness arrangement. I am surprised at how few people accept
these gifts of healing. Which brings me full circle to Mary Ellens
comment, A friend of mine is a determined healer. . . .
Abraham says, When you are feeling the discomfort from see-
ing other people in a lackful or needy situation, and you decide
to help them from your place of discomfort, no lasting value
ever occurs, for two important reasons: rst, you are not in
alignment with the Energy of your Source, and so you have no

real value to give; and second, your attention to their need only
amplies their need. -- When you feel an inspired eagerness to
offer something because you want to participate in their happy,
successful process, your attention to their success harmonizes
with the point of view of your Source and the innite resources
of the Universe are at your disposal. And that does help. (Ex-
cerpted from Abrahams Getting into the Vortex Guided Medita-
tion CD and User Guide).
At my best, I unconditionally love others and myself. I honor
the perfection of them as they are, where they are and I honor
the same perfection in myself. Having said thatloving others
unconditionally and with no investment in the outcomethere
are times when I silently offer a healing. There could be times
when it is accepted.

T
he purpose of this article is to share with
my colleagues a technique which I use fre-
quently in my Healing Touch practice. The tech-
nique evolved, intuitively, as I worked with clients
with compromised immune systems. We are
aware that we, as practitioners, are channels/
conduits for Energy to pass from our own Higher
Source. The immune system needs this heal-
ing support in certain compromised states. The
article is not intended to be an intellectual disser-
tation. My intention is to offer information about a
technique which has the potential to support the
immune system of our clients, as well as the op-
tion to be used as a self-care technique.
THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
The immune system is a complex biological system, made up
of an advanced network of tissues, organs and cells. This sys-
tem works to provide the body with a natural system of defens-
es. Different types of cells and proteins are designed to destroy
invaders. Protective white blood cells, such as T cells, travel via
the bloodstream to lymph nodes, the thymus and spleen seek-
ing invaders such as bacteria, viruses, fungal infections and
tumor cells.
THE DIAMOND TECHNIQUE
The purpose of this technique is two-fold: 1) To address im-
mune system disturbances and 2) To support and maintain the
health of the immune system for our clients. What does
that mean? Hand placements include the thymus, spleen, root
chakra and liver.
The thymus gland, located in the high heart chakra, programs
the lymphocytes (T cells) to ght disease, while the spleen
under the left rib cage, plays a major role in ghting infection
in the body. The root chakra supports the bone marrow, the
producer of T cells and other white blood cells necessary for an
immune response. The liver, located under the right rib cage,
serves as the clearing house for toxic substances in the body.
I use the Diamond Technique in treating clients with cancer; pol-
ymyositis; Lymes disease; mononucleosis; rheumatoid arthritis;
lupus, bromyalgia and u symptoms, although this technique
could be used for clients with any immune system disorder.
CLIENT EMPOWERMENT
A major concept taught in the Healing Touch Curriculum is
client empowerment through education and self-care. I have
taught many clients the Diamond Technique to include in their
self-care practices for the purpose of supporting their immune
systems to maintain health and wellness, as well as, for treat-
ing an existing health challenge. I underscore the reality that
we (client and practitioner) are channels through whom healing
Energy, Love and Light pass from our own Source for healing
and wholeness.
PRACTITIONER SELF-CARE
Self-care is emphasized as an important principle for HT
students and practitioners. Several of the HT core curriculum
methods are recommended for self-care, such as the Chakra

Connection, Self Spiral Meditation and Hara Alignment Medi-
tation. Students and practitioners may consider including the
Diamond Technique as a part of their own self-care.
PROCEDURE
The DIAMOND TECHNIQUE can
be offered with the client reclining or
while sitting in a chair. It can be used
in combination with other treatments
or as a single treatment. The practi-
tioner begins with right or left hand
placements, depending upon which
side of the client the treatment is
given. Hand positions may be held for
one to two minutes or according to the
intuitive sense of the practitioner. The
same hand positions are used in the
SELF TECHNIQUE.
After centering, grounding and attuning with the intention for the
clients highest good, the sequenced hand placements are as
follows:
Left hand over thymus; right hand over spleen
Left hand over spleen; right hand over root chakra
Right hand remains on root; left hand moves from spleen
to liver
Right hand over liver; left hand over thymus
Left hand remains over thymus; right hand moves to root
chakra
Left hand moves to liver; right hand moves to spleen
Hand positions may be held one to two minutes or according to
the intuitive sense of the practitioner.
In conclusion, as I offer this technique to my clients, I see the
DIAMOND in my minds eye as a three dimensional congura-
tion lled with Light from the Divine Source. The Cross congu-
ration emerges as hand placements connect the thymus & root
chakra and the spleen & liver.

The Real-World of Spiritual Work
Or, Getting the Housework Done
In-Between Clients
As I wrestled my sons pajamas away from the jaws of my six-
month-old puppythe latter word the biggest misnomer ever
assigned a 70-pound Yellow Labrador Retriever eating his way
to 120 poundsI thought about all the behind-the-scenes work
of my job, which includes shoveling a path through the house
for my clients. There have been days my entire wardrobe has
been hauled out for viewing by the monster puppy.
Lucky is not only adorable, but also able to open closed and
locked doors with a ick of his nose.
As president of my own energy healing company, I am also its
janitor, nurse, bookkeeper, secretary, marketing expert, person-
al trainer, and cheerleader. Oops, Id better add the title of Swat
Team Leader for arising emergencies.
I have staff and consultants, bright and dedicated team mem-
bers who help me help people. The truth is, however, that at
least half of any business devoted to Healing Touch, energy
medicine, or the intuitive arts is what my son would call bor-
ing, and I would call practical. The list of hands-on consid-
erations includes an extended outline of external but also
internal tasks that if not tended, potentially choke the owers
for all the weeds.
Generally I divide the musts into four categories, using a Myer
Briggs model of temperament and personality. According to this
Jungian-based philosophy, we tend toward one of four basic
types of interaction:
Driver: Pushing, making, doing.
Expressive: Creating, sharing, exhibiting.
Amiable: Befriending, loving, harmonizing.
Analytic: Detailing, organizing, systematizing.
Being a healerliving a good liferequires that we attend to
each of these functions outside and inside of ourselves. We are
not going to ace them all, as we are hard-wired for success in
some areas, neutrality or disaster in others, but we have to try
anyway. We are only going to be able to fulll our higher calling
if we also successfully administer real-life. Somewhere along
the line, someone built wings for the angels. Can you imagine
the patience and protocol to attach the right feathers to the right
bone, and glue everything in the right place? The point is that it
takes a lot of meticulous work to y high.
I have external jobs that involve my driver personality. I push
the kids out of the house to school, the broom around the oor,
and the caffeine down my throat at dawn. I expressively cre-
ate marketing materials that share my services and make sure
my assistant is able to amiably greet potential clients. Like all
decent analysts, I pay my bills weekly and report my earnings
and taxes monthly.
I am not good at the analytical, but you know what? I have to do
it anyway. I have made every mistake the IRS (Internal Revenue
Service) could have imagined (and they can testify to this truth),
but I pay my taxes all the same.
Addressing our internal needs is as important as fullling our
external obligations. It is not always easy to stay motivated. The
solution is to activate our inner driver. Yeah, Cyndi! You can
get through ten straight days of work! Go to it! You can attend

kids hockey games six nights a week! It will be fun! Not much
comes to those who sit around and wait. Yet there needs to be
time for inner expression or creativity, for mulling over the pur-
pose of life, for enjoying vacations that fulll and inspire. There
must be space for friends, for talk time, fun time, shopping time.
There must also be logic to the days ow, a tending to personal
business. I take every Friday off now to attend my support
group, visit my own care providers, stock up on groceries and
pet food, and perform all those sundry activities that make me
crazy if I do not do them.
I love energy healing because it helps me touch the sky, scoop
the stars out of the heavens, and laugh at their brilliance. I also
know that they will not grow on earth unless planted in the soil.
That is my job. To create the immortal we must accomplish the
tasks of mortality. I guess in the end, we energy practitioners
are farmers to the soul and must get our hands dirty once in a
while to accomplish this goal.

hen you, yourself are looking for a pro-
fessional to provide a personal service,
how do you choose them?
Clearly understanding what is important to you will help you
know what you need to consider when presenting your ser-
vices to the public.
If someone doesnt know you personally, how does your mar-
keting material present you and the services you offer? It is es-
sential to think about your professional image and what image
you are presenting to others. According to Harvard Business
School professor, Laura Morgan Roberts, Your professional
image is the set of qualities and characteristics that represent
perceptions of your competence and character as judged by
your key constituents (i.e., clients and colleagues).
Questions you should ask yourself: Does your professional
image make you appear trustworthy and competent?
Does it convey you as an expert in a particular area? Are your
services clearly identied and explained?
In todays world having an online presence is crucial for a busi-
ness. According to several sources, 76% of the U.S. population
owns or has access to a computer. We are a computer savvy
society and your online business presence brings you into
a potential clients awareness. If someone learns about you
through word of mouth or print media they will want to check
out your web site and social media venues to gather more
information about you and your services. Your image speaks a
thousand words.
Some of the professional services you will want to consider cre-
ating, or possibly revamping, to have the best possible profes-
sional image are: a graphic artist for a logo, imaging, business
card and brochures; a printer for signs and other printed materi-
als; a web designer for a web site; a writing professional to help
with content for your website, printed materials and blogs.
Networking with other professionals increases your visibility
and can provide you with referrals to professionals in other in-
dustries. Networking can take the form of personal face to face
meetings, conferences, local gatherings, and on-line listings.
Popular sites like Meetup.com can help you build and increase
your network of like-minded professionals, other service profes-
sionals and even potential clients.
Consider the ways that you project your professional appear-
ance to your clients. Displaying degrees, certicates, and
awards in your ofce is one way. Dening and describing your
credentials and achievements in your written materials is
another. Creating a conducive ofce or treatment atmosphere
is yet another. Pay attention to what you see other profession-
als doing and the impact it has on you as a patient or client.
Use yourself and your own thoughts, attitudes and desires as
a measure for what you want your client to experience with you
and act accordingly.
Carrying Professional and General Liability Insurance is one
way to increase your professionalism. Protect your personal
and business assets and all the energy and hard work you

T
here is quite a buzz going on about accredi-
tation lately, and a lot of acronyms ying
around. Healing Touch Program (HTP) has
been talking about national accreditation for a
couple of years, along with having announce-
ments and discussions, volunteers and commit-
tees, and new requirements that are needed.
Weve recently announced our rst national
accreditation by ANCC (as of March 23, 2011!).
HTP is also pursuing a second national accredi-
tation through NCCA, which is the credentialing
branch of ICE (formerly NOCA). This is all great
news for HTP-As, HTPs, HTCPs, and HTCP/Is!
The only problem is we seem to be developing a serious case
of TMA (Too Many Acronyms)!!!
Im going to try and break things down and clear up what is
going on, what it all means, and what is coming. Basically, this
article will dene some key terms, identify what the acronyms
mean, and provide a brief overview of what is important for
HTP students and practitioners to know about what is coming in
terms of the NCCA accreditation.
Lets start with a clarication of terms and the differences
between certicates, certicate programs, certication, creden-
tials, and accreditation.
A Certicate is a document that shows that something was
done. A course completion certicate shows that a student
attended a class. Students of HTP receive a certicate of at-
tendance for each class they attend where they participated
successfully.
A Certicate program is a when a student attends a course
or series of courses and receives a certicate of attendance or
certicate of completion. The certicate of course completion
that a student receives after Level 5 is an example of a Certi-
cate of completion, and the series of courses of Healing Touch
from level 1 through 5 is a certicate program.
A Certication is an ofcial recognition that something meets
a standard. HTCP Certication from Healing Touch Certica-
tion (HTC) shows that a practitioner has demonstrated that they
possess a level of knowledge, skill, and ability.
A Credential is an award recognizing the achievement or
aspect of a persons background and used to indicate they are
suitable for something. Once a student has met HTPs edu-
cational standards, Healing Touch Certication (HTC), HTPs
autonomous certication administrator, awards the credential
Healing Touch Certied Practitioner (HTCP).
Accreditation is an award that a professional certication
organization can apply for to demonstrate that their certica-
tion program, and the credential it awards, meets the standards
dened by the accrediting authority/agency.
The biggest news of the day is of course that HTP has re-
ceived the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
accreditation! This accreditation qualies HTP to offer Nursing
Continuing Education (CE) contact hours by the most presti-
gious national nursing organization. ANCC is a subsidiary of
the American Nurses Association (ANA). HTPs Continuing
Education contact hours for nurses were previously provided
through the Colorado Nurses Association (CNA), which is ac-
credited as an Approver of Continuing Nursing Education by the
ANCCs Commission on Accreditation.
For Healing Touch Program, this is a move from the state level
to the national level and is a huge step up for us. ANCC nursing
CEs are recognized as the standard in nursing continuing

education. A couple of states require additional qualications,
and of those, only one has additional work to do for qualication.
The newly acquired ANCC accreditation makes Healing Touch
Program the rst Energy Medicine program Accredited
directly through ANCC, and is a signicant professional
achievement and step forward in our vision of bringing Heal-
ing Touch into every Health Care Facility, hospital, home and
school. It is also a huge step forward for the eld of energy
medicine and further validates HTPs bylineWorldwide Lead-
ers of Energy Medicine.
The second national accreditation that we are actively working
toward is National Center for Credentialing Agencies (NCCA)
accreditation, and it is a little different from ANCC. ANCC ac-
credits HTP as a provider of Nursing Continuing Education (CE)
contact hours.
NCCA accredits the certication process of a body, like Healing
Touch Certication (HTC), that certies and awards a credential
to qualied professionals.
A professionally accredited credential is an assurance that a
professional possesses of a level of knowledge, skill, ability, and
professionalism. What this means to a practitioner is that the
credential they earn from an accredited certication process is
an accredited credential. Our goal is to achieve accreditation of
the Healing Touch Certied Practitioner (HTCP) credential.
NCCA is one of the most respected and professionally recog-
nized credentialing bodies in the Allied Health Care Industry.
(You can read more about NCCA, including looking at the list of
accredited programs on the ICE web page). ICE is the Institute
for Credentialing Excellence, and is the membership body for
the credentialing organizations. Healing Touch Program is now
listed as a member organization on the ICE web page.
Here is a link to the ICE web page:
www.credentialingexcellence.org
Hopefully, these explanations help to clear things up some of
your questions. We are working on an Accreditation Information
Page for the HTP website which will provide more background
and up to date information about HTPs accreditations.
Now for a brief update of what is coming up in the
near future
Many of you know that HTP is creating an exam as part of
the NCCA accreditation. Over eighty HTCPs and HTCIs have
been hard at work getting the test questions prepared. The
pilot test is almost ready to launch. Practitioner certication
policies are being revised in order to meet the standards for
NCCA accreditation.
The biggest thing for Practitioners right now is the coming
pilot test. This is a test of the test, where all the questions are
evaluated based on how the pool answers them. This is the real
proof of which questions are good. The scores of Practitioners
will be evaluated against non practitioners to determine how to
reliably distinguish between a lay person and an entry level or
higher HTCP.
Before we can offer the pilot, we need to make sure the review
materials are available for the test takers to study. We want to
be sure that the same material is available for the pilot as when
the test is implemented into the certication process.
The test materials should be available very soon, and we are
planning to make the pilot test available by the end of June. If all
goes well, we will offer the pilot for about three months in order
to meet the required numbers of pilot test takers to validate the
exam. After that time, there will be an evaluation of the results
and rening and implementation of the test.
Once all these steps have been implemented, HTP begins a
waiting period, determined by NCCA standards, after which we
will submit our application for accreditation.
There are many more questions that students and practitioners
have been asking about the pilot test and the changes to certi-
cation associated with accreditation. Here are some quick facts
to the best of our knowledge based on our understanding
copyright 2011 Healing Touch Program April 2011 | Energy Magazine 19
The ABCs of Accreditation
at this time, but as of this writing are not yet written policy.
The pilot test is optional.
The pilot test will cost less than the exam when it is
implemented.
The pilot test will contain more questions, but will allow
proportionately more time to take it.
The pilot test can count to meet the HTCPs requirement
for the test as long as the score, among the questions that
are ultimately on the exam, is a passing score.
The purpose of the test is to differentiate between an entry
level HTCP and non-trained person.
When the test is implemented, all current HTCPs will be
grandfathered and will remain HTCPs, but will need to
pass the HTCP Entry Level Exam before their next
certication renewal.
Each practitioner will only need to pass the test one time.
The subsequent ve year practitioner renewal packets will
only require the usual paperwork and not another exam.
There will be a policy in place to repeat the test for anyone
who does not pass.
The test will be multiple choice.
The fnal test will be approximately 125 questions.
The test can be taken from any qualifed proctor. (available
in many libraries and schools)
The test will be available in paper and pencil form, and will
hopefully be available in computer form as well.
The certifcation packet and review process will remain as
the foundation of the practitioner certication (HTCP).
NO WORRIES!! You will not be tested on the acronyms in
this article!!!

you do your absolute best work, theres always some risk that someone with whom you interact will be
dissatisfied. Professional Liability Insurance protects you against covered claims arising from real or alleged

aving a private healing practice offers
countless rewards and many challeng-
es. Those individuals who have a private prac-
tice combine their love of what they do with their
talents and skills to serve their clients and make
a positive difference. That is the easy part!
The not so easy part for many holistic health professionals is
the business portion of the work i.e. the marketing and record-
keeping. Practitioners who own their own business need to
be enthusiastic, savvy business entrepreneurs as well as
heart-centered healers! Not an easy, or necessarily a natural
combination. Many healers would love nothing more than to
serve clients each week and leave the business necessities out
of their work. Unfortunately, clients wont come through the door
without something to attract them.
- How do I learn to run a successful business that is highly
protable and personally satisfying?
- How do I attract an abundance of ideal clients and generate
an ongoing ow of quality referrals?
- How do I seek professional services from industry
specialists in a cost effective way?
These are questions that are asked frequently. Marketing and
building a private practice can be extremely challenging. If you
are having a difcult time building your healing practice you are
not alone!

There are Solutions to These Questions
The Practice Building learning track at this years confer-
ence offers ample opportunity to attend pre and post confer-
ence workshops, keynote presentations and breakout sessions

bright with fun and laughter in future years too.
Thank you so much for a love lled experience.
This was one of the best conferences I have ever attended.
I appreciate all the wonderful speakers, events and love. So
much went into this production. There is no way to express my
gratitude. The food was excellent. Mary Duennes was excep-
tional, as always, and the lectures were ap-
propriate, enlightening and fun. Networking
was a blast. I made more connections than
ever. All was good and I look forward to the

I consulted and worked with Charley as a patient of his in 2010
and felt that his philosophy of care resonated nicely with that of
HT Program. I invited him to share some of his knowledge and
wisdom about holistic health care and naturopathic principles
with our HTP Energy Magazine community through reprints of
some of his seminal articles. We will be offering a series of his
articles on health in the next few issues of EM. Thank you for
sharing with us Charley! Cynthia Hutchison
It is more important to know what sort of
person has a disease than to know what sort
of disease a person has. ~Hippocrates
O
ne of the ve core principles of Naturopath-
ic Medicine is Treat the patient, not the
disease. What does this mean? To me it means
that my primary focus is not your weight, your
disease or your hormonal levels, although all
of these merit their due consideration and care.
It means that, with few exceptions, nothing can
impact your health as profoundly and certainly
as you, the patient, can through the ways you
use and care for your body and mind. Whether
you are overweight or diagnosed with colitis,
diabetes or any other disorder the most powerful
source of healing you will nd is you, yourself.
Specically I am referring to the way you eat, exercise, think
and communicate. These activities are the dominant inuences
on your anatomy and physiology. Every structure and function
of your body is affected by these actions - the composition of
your blood and lymph, hormonal balance, brain chemistry, im-
munity, bones - you name it. If your actions are abnormal, they
cause your physiology to become abnormal.
Interestingly this core self-healing work remains substantially
the same for you, as an individual, regardless of your diagnosis.
Whether your illness involves migraines, arthritis or infertility,
your core healing work will be essentially the same. You will still
need to correct your own errors in eating, exercise, thinking and
communicating. Conversely ve different clients with the same
diagnosis would each nd their program of self-healing to be
unique to them -- one emphasizing nutrition, a second spinal
misalignment, another chronic anxiety.
Your power to heal such processes as inammation, hormonal
balance and brain chemistry is identical to the power you have
to control your daily actions. The wisdom with which you govern
your appetite, posture, thoughts and emotions IS the very
power that controls your unconscious bodily processes such as
digestion, reproduction etc. By performing your most ordinary
daily activities with love and intelligence you will nd that your
body becomes an expression of this.
This approach - which I call Self- Healing - is absolutely
practical. It takes the mystery out of Healing and puts the power
directly in your own hands. Not only is it immediately accessible
to everyone, it is actually inescapable. Everyone already eats,
moves, thinks and communicates. The only question is whether
Treat the Patient,
not the Disease

Treat the Patient
or not we perform these vital functions wisely and caringly.
There are no escaping the results, for better or for worse.
The most important thing I teach my students is how to wield
their power to self-heal. Are you incapable of resisting a cup of
coffee or a dessert? Are you unskillful in directing your thoughts
away from anger or anxiety? Do you allow your actions to be
governed by whatever feels pleasant or painful in the moment?
Observe the condence, intelligence, and kindness with which
you direct your most ordinary actions. By these actions you
feed, rest and exercise your body. By the thoughts you have, do
you stimulate your mind with irresistible desires and terrifying
fears or with a passion for Health through right action? It is you
on whom your body and mind depend.
You are your own master. Who else? Nobody else can eat,
exercise, or think for you. There is absolutely no possibility of
escaping the consequences of your actions - both for better and
for worse. Reecting deeply on the inviolability of Natural law
has been perhaps the greatest impetus for me to take better
care of myself. I instruct and encourage my students to develop
the practice of contemplating the universal law of justice or fair
compensation. As you give, so shall you receive. It alerts you
to the fact that your actions matter -- supremely.
Let us examine one example of the incomparable power you
possess for Self-Healing; the power of hunger. Just as you train
a horse to plow a eld or a dog to guard your children, you can
harness the animal power of hunger. Hunger when trained and
befriended will devour bacteria, viruses and weakened, sick tis-
sue. Hunger is a erce, wild animal power, which, when wielded
with love, will defend your body against almost everything.
However, if you allow your body to behave like an uncontrolled
animal and eat whatever and whenever it wants - it becomes
weak, lazy and incapable of defending your precious home.
Think of how much personal power it takes for you to stop
drinking coffee or sweets, let alone to fast for a day. This is
precisely the power that you can learn to harness to purify and
strengthen your body. You will learn to channel the power you
now squander in short term pleasures for the restoration of all
your bodily structures and functions be it reproduction, diges-
tion or circulation.
Movement is another means by which you can infuse your body
with love and intelligence. Imagine pausing 30 seconds to bring
poise to your posture, to breathe fully into your body, and say
to it, This is for you. I am with you, I love you. Imagine that for
20 minutes each morning you infuse your body with such kind
attention through conscious exercise.
For numerous reasons our scientic community has only
minimally studied and documented our human powers of
self-healing. I appreciate the contribution western science has
made to my understanding of healing. However, I did not learn
to heal myself by reading scientic journals. I have been more
inuenced by the fathers of Naturopathic Medicine, herbalism,
homeopathy, psychotherapy, yoga and especially the saints and
teachers of various spiritual traditions. Therefore, I explain to
my clients how healing works in the ways it was taught to me
-- ways that are a blend of science, philosophy, metaphor and
common sense.
Most of my clients nd that their illness makes more sense when
understood as a natural way that their body or a specic organ is
actually communicating to them. The body asks much like a baby
asks for milk or a ower for water. Its asking begins gently and in-
creases in intensity. The demands of Nature can never silenced.
It is supremely important that we heed the voice of our bodys
wisdom speaking to us in the universal language of illness.
We innocently may not have fully grasped the incomparable
benets or miseries consequent upon our listening and car-
ing. Illness teaches us to listen and obey our bodys needs. It
motivates us to seek and embrace what truly benets us and to
eschew short term pleasures that end in suffering.
I teach my students to interpret their illness as priceless guid-
ance coming to them from the Universe. Harsh but invaluable
instruction, 100% personalized to YOU. The same diagnosis or
symptoms in another person would carry completely different
instructions for how to improve ones life.

Treat the Patient
As students makes this perceptual shift from viewing their ill-
ness as something foreign and destructive to seeing it as highly
personal and caring instruction, their interest moves away from
trying to cure their disease. They become keenly interested in
understanding themselves and what it means to truly care for

Healing Touch Energy Balls
This dynamic tool for demonstrating how energy fows, now comes in new
packaging and with the words Healing Touch on the ball.
The Energy Ball is a wonderful tool for demonstrating how energy fows
through the body using simple conductivity. Simply touching the two contact
points completes the circuit of energy fowing in your body causing the
Energy Ball to light up and make a sound.
This demonstration works equally well with a group of people holding hands
to form a chain with two individuals each touching one of the contact points
to complete the circuit of energy.
Available for only $6 each through the Healing Touch Store.
