When you became a member of the Civil Air
Patrol, you became a leader whether you knew it
or not. Whether a senior, a cadet, a patron, sponsor
or AE member, you are a CAP leader. Whether
you just received your first ID card or are a 50 year
lifetime member, you are a CAP leader. When you
put on your uniform, whether the Air Force style,
the corporate alternative or even the CAP golf shirt,
you are telling the world that you are a CAP leader.
Now you might be saying to yourself (or
maybe even to everyone within earshot of you
right now) Wait a minute, Im not a commander
or department head, Im just a member that wants
to do what I joined CAP to do. Im not a leader. I
beg to differ.
None of us joined CAP to be in a leadership

Every year Wing leadership
from across the country heads
to Washington D.C. to attend
the Winter Command Council
meeting and Legislative Day on
Capitol Hill. For the last several
years, many members make
a pilgrimage to the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Wall (also
known as The Wall) to honor
those whose names they knew.
This year, California Wings
members Lt. Col. Greg Chase,
Lt. Col. Alan Ferguson and
Col. Jon Stokes went to honor
three who were either mem-
bers or family members of our
members.
Col. Ferguson was there to
honor the memory of a CAWG
cadet, Gary L. Hollingsworth,
who he served as a cadet in the
1960s.
Col . Chase honor s hi s
brother, WO1 Freddie Chase,
who was a 19 year old helicop-
ter pilot. Col. Chase honors his
brother by serving as a volun-
teer docent at The Wall several
times a year.
Col. Jon Stokes honored
Col. Roy A. Knight Jr. Col.
Knight was a A-1 Skyraider pilot shot down over Laos on 19 May 1967 and is still listed as Missing in
Action. Col. Knight is the father of Maj. Roy A. Knight III who is the Squadron Commander of Fallbrook
Senior Squadron 87 in Southern California.

In December, the California Wing lost two of
its most respected members of the emergency ser-
vices team, Lt. Col. Denise Edwards and Lt. Col.
Joe Orchard. Both Col. Edwards and Col. Orchard
were long time members of the emergency ser-
vices community and their loss will leave a void
not easily filled.
Lt. Col. Carol Denise Edwards joined CAP
nearly 60 years ago as a 14 year old and dedicated
her life to public service and saving lives from
that point forward. Following her cadet career,
California Wing
Loses Two Giants in
Emergency Services
Col Edwards joined the United States Air Force
and served as a firefighter and first responder for
crashed aircraft. After her military service, Col.
Edwards became a registered nurse where she con-
tinued to help her fellow man. During this time,
Col. Edwards continued her CAP career as a mis-
sion pilot, ground team leader and later an incident
commander. Among her many assignments, Col.
Edwards also served as Squadron Commander
of Hawker Senior Squadron 128, Group 1 Safety
Officer and California Wing Emergency Services
(L-R) Col. Jon Stokes (CA Wing Commander), Lt. Col. Denise Edwards, Col. Larry Myrick (Pacific Region Commander).

Training Officer. Col. Edwards talents were most
evident in her desire to improve herself through
additional training and pass that training and
experience on to others. Among the many training
courses she attended included the National Search
& Rescue School, Direction and Control of Search
Function, Managing the Lost Person Incidents,
and numerous courses from the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) and the American
Red Cross. Through these courses, Col. Edwards
was been able to train countless CAP members
in advanced emergency services techniques and
emergency medical response, including the new
FEMA Incident Command courses required for
senior staff.
Lt. Col. Joe Orchard began his public service
while serving with the United States Navy as
a reservist in the 1950s. Upon his honorable
discharge, he began exploring his interest in avia-
tion by pursuing his A&P certificate while living
in New York and later worked for Boeing as a
mechanic on the B-47 and B-52 flight lines. After
obtaining his private pilots license, Col. Orchard
joined CAP in January 1977 and quickly began
accumulating numerous ratings as his training con-
tinued. Soon, Col. Orchard was a qualified mission
pilot, cadet orientation pilot, mission check pilot,
maintenance officer, operations officer, deputy
commander and eventual commander of Big
Bear Composite Squadron 6750 after moving to
Big Bear in 1988. As his CAP career continued,
Col. Orchards greatest impact was as an Incident
Commander where he commanded 27 ELT, 22
REDCAP and 38 training missions.
At the 2012 California Wing Conference, both
Col. Edwards and Col. Orchard were recognized
for their many years of service with the Exception
Service Award presented by Col. Stokes and
Col. Myrick. While both Col. Edwards and Col.
Orchard may be gone, their legacy will live on
with the countless members that they trained and
who continue to serve and train others.

Lt. Col. Carol Denise Edwards of Van Nuys
Hawker Squadron 128 made her first rescue when
she was twelve years old. Edwards and her sister
Dianne were hiking on a trail in a wooded canyon.
Edwards became enthralled by her surroundings in
nature and decided to stay out later, while younger
Dianne headed back to the family campsite by
herself. When Edwards returned, their parents
became concerned, that Dianne was not with her.
Edwards felt responsible, because they didnt stay
together. The wide spread search began with family
members, forest rangers and campers close-by.
When we lose someone we love, there are no
boundaries as to what we will do to get him or her
back. Night was closing in on them and the search
would ensue after the break of dawn. Edwards knew
three things: nature, trail tracking and diligence.

but suddenly became lost. She was

role. We joined CAP to fly, to work in emergency services, to
work with cadets or because we wanted to teach the world about
the wonders of aerospace. While some have been recognized for
their leadership abilities and been asked to become commanders,
that doesnt mean that we arent all leaders. Consider what you
personally do in CAP. As a pilot, you are the leader of what goes
on inside that CAP aircraft. As a cadet NCO, you are a leader
to the basic cadets who will look to you for help and guidance as
someone who not so long ago was just where they are today. As an
aerospace educator, you are a content expert, a leader with the
knowledge to teach others the impact that aerospace and aviation
has had on our lives over the last 100 years. Most importantly, you
are the ambassadors to the non-CAP world that we serve. If that
isnt a leadership role, I dont know what is.
As leaders, we have an obligation to those that we lead, whether
our members or the public-at-large. There isnt much difference
between the two. The first and most important thing in leader-
ship is be prepared to do your best. Someone is always watching
and being prepared to do your best will always serve you and
your organization well. While respect is the fourth of our four
core values, it is in no way last. As a leader, you must show the
utmost in respect to everyone you come in contact with and to the
organization as a whole. Anything less is unacceptable. You must
be kind, firm in your convictions and beliefs and you must take
care of those you lead before you take care of yourself. As CAP
leaders, if we do these things every time we put on the uniform, in
everything that we do, our organization will be stronger and will
continue to thrive for years to come.
While we all are leaders in our own right, there are those that
have taken on the traditional role of leaders as commanders. These
individuals have stepped up to be responsible for their flights,
their squadrons and groups and missions. Our organization could
not function without them and we owe them all a debt of thanks.
Command, like life, is cyclical. As the organization progresses
with time, current commanders must recognize the immense level
of talent within our ranks and begin to groom the next generation
of leaders. Leadership in any organization isnt easy but it is not
something to be feared or avoided. We should all pursue leadership
roles even if we are never or desire to be selected. If selected, it is
hard work but it will all be worth it when your unit or one of your
members does something extraordinary.
One of my favorite quotes comes from the author Daniel Pink
who said The richest experiences in our lives are not when we are
seeking validation or approval from others, but when we are doing
something that matters, doing it well, and doing it in the service of
a cause larger than ourselves.
Leadership is the something that matters.

As t he newl y appoi nt ed
California Wing Public Affairs
Officer, I have taken on a task for
which I am passionate about: get-
ting the word out about Americas
Best Kept Secret. One of the ave-
nues to educate our communities
is the Bear Facts Magazine. This
periodical is not just for our internal
audiences (members of CAP) but
also for our external audiences (the
communities which we serve).
Bear Fact s hi ghl i ght s our
achievements as an organization,
but more importantly the Cadets
and Seniors that have dedicated
their time and energy to serve their
communities. It tells our story
and the dedication needed to sup-
port our missions of Emergency
Services, Aerospace Education
and Cadet Programs.
As volunteers, we are inher-
ently not in need of recognition of
our service, time or sacrifice. But
how else can we tell our story?
This is where we need your help.
We would like to request that if you
come across an event or individual
that needs to be showcased, to
chronicle it in a story and pictures
to share with all our audiences.
The CAWG Public Affairs team is
available to help you with writing
the story and content.
Remember, we are all Public
Affairs Officers, whether we are
telling the story of CAP or relay-
ing the stories of others.
Together, we can start getting the
message out about Civil Air Patrol:
Americas Best Kept Secret.

dation with those all-important
face-to-face meetings.
In February 2014, the wing
sent the same senior team back
to Washington along with three
different cadets. Col. Jon Stokes,
Lt. Col. Alan Ferguson, Lt. Col.
Carl Morrison, Lt. Col. Greg
Chase and 1st Lt. Mark Kempton
returned to continue the work
started in 2013. On the agenda
were the FY15 budget, asking
that Congress continues to fund
our efforts at our requested
levels and seeking a vote on
t he House fl oor of HR755.
The team, assisted by Col. Ken
Parris, attended 22 meetings
with key legislators on commit-
tees representing appropriations,
budget, homeland security and
armed services and as in 2013,
made considerable headway in
achieving the national legisla-
tive agenda. At the end of the
day, the CAWG legislative team
assembled on the east steps of
the Capitol where Col. Stokes
presented them with Meritorious
Service Awards. During the pre-
sentation, Col. Stokes said, I
am proud to work with the best
legislative team in the country.
The work that you did last year
and again today will pay divi-
dends for years to come.
While seeking support at the
national level is important, we
cannot forget that all politics is
local and neglect our state leg-
islators. Lt. Kempton, who is the
Deputy Director of Legislative
Affairs, has made great strides
in resurrecting the California
Legislative Squadron and has
recruited three new members.
These members will be meeting
in April to discuss the legislative
agenda for the state.
Lt. Col. Alan Ferguson meets with Congressman John Garamendi from the 3rd
congressional district
Col. Stokes meets with Legislative Director Miguel Franco from Congressman
Tony Cardenas office representing the 29th congressional district.

Over twenty Civil Air Patrol members from
around the San Francisco Bay Area, Northern
California and as far south as San Diego converged
in Oakland, CA at Squadron 188 to spend the
February 8th weekend at a Mission Scanners
Course. The class included a mix of backgrounds,
including both pilots and non-pilots, as well as
both members that were very new to CAP and
some that were renewing their existing Mission
Scanner certifications.
Some of the of the topics covered in the classes
included
Scanner duties and missions - whether its a Search
and Rescue (SAR) mission or an airborne pho-
tography mission or something else, the scanners
main job is to... well, scan! This is the reason the
airplane is up in the air on most missions.
Basic aircraft and navigation familiarization - this
was particularly helpful to the non-pilots in the
class and a good reminder for everyone.
Survival and urgent care issues discussion
revolved around both survival and urgent care
issues related to the people we might be search-
ing for on a SAR mission and survival gear for
ourselves as air crew.
Air to air and air to ground communications
- besides talking about proper communications
technique and protocol, we took a look at some
of the communications equipment we might
expect to find in CAP planes, which are not all
the same.
Weather and how it affects search planning
and scanning effectiveness - whether its
MS Ground School
By 2nd Lt. Karin Hollerbach, CAP
fog, smoke, dust, rain, haze, clouds (or lack
thereof), the position of the sun, etc., all of
these factors impact how effective we are on
any given mission. Some of these factors we
can work with, others ... sometimes its best
to call it a day and come back later when the
weather has changed.
High altitude and terrain considerations - not only
does high altitude affect aircrew (and survivor
on the ground) safety, the presence or absence
of higher altitude terrain also impacts search
patterns and how best to be effective.
Crew resource management (CRM) - those of us
who were not yet Mission Scanners previously
gained an appreciation for the intense workload
associated with scanning and all other aspects
of flying a SAR mission, and learned about
aspects of CRM that can help distribute the load
and create a safe environment for the aircrew.
The course was taught by Capt. Joshua
Edwards, 1st Lt. Jordan Hayes, Maj. Noel Luneau,
Capt. Raymond Woo, Capt. Chris Johnson, Maj.
Christopher Suter, and Lt. Col. Brett Dolnick.
The students received hands-on experience in
planning a flight pattern in a particular grid pattern
in a sectional chart, scanning techniques, logging
data and radio techniques.
In order to complete the Mission Scanner certi-
fication, these new trainees need additional task to
complete and participate in two Search and Rescue
Exercises (SAREX) where flight crews, ground
teams and mission base personnel receive real life
experience in a simulated search and rescue.
CAP Mission Scanner Trainees receive aircraft briefing on radios and basic aircraft components.

It should be no secret to the readers of this
magazine that Civil Air Patrol takes Safety very
seriously. At least once a month at your unit you
get a lecture on a Safety topic. When you attend an
activity, a SAREX, or a class outside your unit you
get a Safety briefing that relates to where you are
and whats going on. But how effective are these
briefings and lectures? Are they what keep you
safe from injury or loss? I would submit that, no,
not by themselves. They are only one element in
an effective Safety program and environment.
Let me explain. Years ago when I still worked
for a big public utility company our rank-and-file
workers were asked to create a slogan that sup-
ported Safety in the shops, and in our offices and
on the job sites. I never forgot what they came
up with. It was, Safety is a Lifestyle; Enjoy the
Rewards. What really struck home for me was
Lifestyle. That said it all. Safety is personal.
Its not some Joe Safety running around giving
lectures and looking for loose wires. Those things
help, of course, but unless each of us takes Safety
personally and operates in an environment of
Safety, all is lost.
It would take another article like this one to
describe CAPs Safety program but our focus here
is on the environment in which that program
lives. And for the sake of this article I will refer
to that environment as our Culture of Safety.
Another Safety buzzword? Perhaps. But in tak-
ing a closer look at such a culture we see a lot of
our safety culture explained.
By Lt. Col. Mike Watkins, CAP
CAWG SE
AN ENVIRONMENT
FOR SAFETY
One of the best descriptions of a safety cul-
ture I have seen appeared in the FAAs Air
Traffic Bulletin in March, 2010. But before we see
what the FAA said, lets lay some groundwork by
simply looking in the dictionary. Webster defines
Safety as, the condition of being safe from
undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss. Not
a bad description, but how about culture. It is
described thusly, a set of shared attitudes, values,
goals and practices that characterizes an institution
or organization. Keep those thoughts in mind. Now
we are ready for what the FAA said.
The FAA laid forth five elements that make up
a culture of safety. First was Reporting. We
willingly and freely report mishaps. (Think Safety
Management System SMS). Second, the culture
is Just. There is an atmosphere of mutual trust.
Third, the culture is Informed. There is current
awareness of safety issues. We share with each
other our accidents and our close calls. Fourth,
we operate in an environment of Learning. We
review mishaps and try to determine what caused
them and what we can do to prevent them. Fifth
and last is Flexible. We adapt effectively to
changing conditions and challenges.
To sum it up, our safety environment is one
where we report and we learn in a spirit of sharing
and trust. We analyze and we adapt to the benefit
of all. And as the utility workers put it almost two
decades ago, we practice it as though it was a
lifestyle we take it personally and we all reap the
benefit of freedom from injury and loss.

2nd Lt. Zach Foster, CAP
Squadron 64 Public Affairs
Civil Air Patrol members around the country have the opportunity to witness impressive air shows
with stunt flying and fascinating exhibits. They get to take part not merely as spectators, but as critical
support staff. Accomplishing these tasks fulfills CAPs key missions of aerospace education, advancing
the cadet program, and even offering emergency services. This was no different for CAPs support mis-
sion at the recent Cable Air Show in Upland.
More than 75 CAP Cadets and Senior Officers, from throughout Southern California, representing
Squadrons 11, 20, 21, 25, 29, 31, 37, 47, 59, 64, 107, and 137, participated in CAPs support mission for
the air show. Leading the auxiliary airmen were three very talented cadet officers. This is their story.
Cable Airport is home to Group 3s Cable Composite Squadron 25. Cadet Captain Dylan Keetle, 17
years old, proudly serves as Squadron 25s current Cadet Commander. A senior at Etiwanda High School,
Cadet Capt. Keetle joined CAP four years ago to pursue his passion for aviation. CAP seemed like the natu-
ral choice after earning his pilots license at age 13 through the Foothill Flying Club. He had already earned
the prestigious Billy Mitchell Award and promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenant at the age of 15.
Cadet Capt. Keetle has served as Squadron 25s Cadet Commander for a year. This years air show
Youth Leadership in Action
26 26
was his third at Cable Airport, and his second as Cadet Commander. His duties for the support mission
included taking charge of all operations and logistics involving cadets, managing cadet staff members,
and delegating key tasks to the section chiefs.
When not leading other teens through CAPs cadet program, Cadet Capt. Keetle runs on his schools
track team, is active in the Associated Student Body, takes Advanced Placement classes, and holds down
a 3.83 GPA. After high school, Keetle intends to attend the Air Force Academy and serve as a career
officer.
Serving alongside Cadet Capt. Keetle was Cadet Second Lieutenant Christina Granillo of Los Angeles
County Group 1s Squadron 64, based at Brackett Airfield. At 15 years old, Cadet 2nd Lt. Granillo earned
her Mitchell Award and became a cadet officer only two weeks prior to the air show. Having graduated
from Charter Oak High School at age 14, Granillo attends Citrus College where she is working toward her
nursing license.
Cadet 2nd Lt. Granillo joined CAP at age 12, attracted to the military aspect of the program and
the high level of discipline among cadetsthe sharp looking uniforms helped, too. Her mission duties
as Cadet Personnel Administrator put her in charge of sixty cadets, though the responsibility doesnt
faze her. Air shows are so much fun! I like to see the stylized flying, I like being around planes, and
I attend SAR/EXs (practice search and rescue exercises) as often as I can. Once she completes her
coursework at Citrus College, she plans on attending Cal Baptist University and to practice nursing in
an intensive care unit.
27 27
Not one to be outdone, Cadet Captain Molly Boop of Group 8s Skyhawks Composite Squadron 47
based at USMC Camp Pendleton, traveled several hours to join CAPs support mission at Cable Airport.
Cadet Capt. Boop joined CAP five years ago at the age of 12. I wanted to grow as a person and test a
military environment. Boop earned her Mitchell Award and became a cadet officer at age 15. Some
highlights of her CAP career include attending Cadet Encampment at Camp San Luis Obispo, participat-
ing in the 2009 National Cadet Competition with her squadrons color guard team, and becoming Deputy
Cadet Commander of Squadron 47.
Cadet Capt. Boops duties at the squadron level include managing flight leaders and ensuring the
success and advancement of each of her cadets. Her duties as Cadet Logistics and Operations Chief for
the air show include overseeing cadet operations and ensuring that cadets had the supplies and manpower
needed to fulfill CAPs support mission there.
The 17 year old cadet officer is a senior at Temecula Preparatory School. After high school, Cadet
Capt. Boop will attend The Masters College, where she will double major in Political Science and History.
Her dream is to either become a teacher or law enforcement officer. What part will CAP have played in
her adult career? The program has helped me grow and made me into the person I am today.
The three cadet officers profiled here are exceptional leaders and dedicated auxiliary airmen. Hard
work and dedication such as theirs continues to raise the bar for incoming cadets and senior members
alike. All three of these young leaders cite one thing in common for their success: Civil Air Patrol and its
Cadet Program.

EXCELLENCE . . .
Aim at perfection in everything, though
in most things it is unattainable;
however, they who aim at it, and
persevere, will come much nearer to
it than those whose laziness and
despondency make them give it up
as unattainable.
- LORD CHESTERFIELD -

oring Edwards, who also received accolades from
the County and City of Los Angeles. Edwards had
tears of joy when she first learned of the dedica-
tion, but unfortunately had passed away prior to
the dedication ceremony.
Edwardss dream of writing a book is about
to come true! Her book is a compilation of her
search and rescue stories, which also include her
high profile involvement as ER trauma nurse
with the Rodney King case, her USAF Fire and
Crash Rescue activities, Cave Exploration, 9/11
and earthquake disaster relief. My writing is
based on her digital recordings, our conversations
and written notes. She also wrote a Wilderness
Survival Manual and more recently began writing
and producing a Lost Child Prevention DVD
called Wilderness Survival; The Unexpected
Night Out. During this time, her digital recorder
came up missing. Although these particular voice
Denise Our Hero Cont. from page 11 . . .
recordings were lost and never found, her written
teachings of her DVD will be incorporated into her
book. I am working closely with Edwardss family
for additional research, authenticity and permis-
sion to promote her image, likeness and life story
the way she wanted me to.
Edwards had asked Col. Jon Stokes to write the
Foreword. She befriended and trained Stokes over
the years as he climbed the ranks to Commander of
the California Wing. She was so proud of Stokes
and was honored to have him share her legacy.
The book (currently untitled) is due to be
published later this year. Edwards wish for book
proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.
For book updates or to share student testimonials
(who saved a life based on what they learned
from her and was recognized for it), please email:

I hold somewhat of a unique position within
my squadron. But before I go into the details of
what I mean by unique, I will give a brief over-
view of my experience in the Civil Air Patrol. I
joined CAP a little over three years ago as a senior

CAP cadet program, even though my local CAP
squadron was practically next door to the high
school I attended. I was an Army JROTC cadet

and due to my interest in aviation, I would have
joined CAP as wellif I had known about its exis-
tence back in the day. To paraphrase Maj. Brian
J. Larkin, one of my mentors and our squadrons
deputy commander, Were the Americas best
kept secret we need to change that! Although
a few years too late to join as a cadet, I did the
next best thingI joined as a senior member in
a cadet squadron. Officially, I pull double duty
as my squadrons Public Affairs Officer and
Information Technology Officer. Additionally, I
also help out with the development and instruction
of our squadrons emergency services curriculum
and ground team training, andlike all the other
senior staff in our squadronmentor our cadets.
The catch? For two-thirds of the year, I perform

my duties from across the Pacific Ocean.
That being said, I am often referred to as
my squadrons virtual officer, a term
coined by Maj. Larkin.
After completing a Fulbright English Teaching
Assistantship in South Korea, I returned stateside to
pursue graduate studies in international security at
Stanford University. At the time, I was looking for
a volunteer activity to get involved in so I wouldnt
end up stuck in the library studying all day, as I
have a tendency to do. After a quick web search of
volunteer organizations in the San Francisco Bay
Area, I found the Civil Air Patrol website and the
contact info for a nearby squadron. CAP seemed
like an organization that combined my interest in
youth mentoring, something Ive been doing since
high school, and
my childhood love
of aerospace and
aviation. I sent an email to Maj. Larkin, the squad-
ron commander at the time, and the rest, as they say,
is history. I officially joined as a member of Cadet
Squadron 86 in my hometown of San Francisco
in fall 2010. I started off as our squadrons safety
officer and subsequently, became the public affairs
and information technology officer. I also found
myself involved in emergency services, eventually
earning my mission observer and ground team
leader ratings.

borhood schools giving recruiting presentations on
CAP and maintaining our squadrons website and
Facebook page as a PAO and ITO, my first love
was being a mentor and role model to the cadets in
my squadron. And this is a value that I learned from
my fellow senior members. For instance, during my
initial interview prior to joining the squadron, Lt.
Col. Aaron Kahn, our squadrons administrative
officer (and Spaatz Cadet #1235!) told me the fol-
lowing: Its not about us. Its about them. After
saying that, he pointed to the cadets practicing drill.
That simple yet meaningful gesture had a profound
impact on me. In fact, it was those words and my
experience in CAP that helped mea twenty-
something who, prior to joining CAP, had been
floundering around for a while after graduating
from university, with no solid career objective or
aspirationsdiscover my dream job. To make
a long story short, after a few months at Squadron
Captain Loui being appointed squadron commander for the
Daegu Dalseo District of the Young Falcons of Korea. (Photo

86, combined with my on-again, off-again stints as
a youth mentor in various schools and non-profit
organizations over the years, I decided to actively
pursue teaching as a career.
Eventually, I found myself on my second
tour of duty to South Korea when I accepted
a position as a professor in the Department of
Police Administration at the Catholic University of
Daegu. After a heartfelt goodbye to my friends and
family at Squadron 86, I headed back to Korea in
the fall of 2011. Nevertheless, my departure over-
seas did not mean the end of my CAP career. One
of the benefits of university teaching is summer and
winter vacations, at which time I return stateside
to volunteer with Forest Hill Military Academy
and the U.S. Army Cadet Corps in Kentucky and
home to San Francisco to continue my work and
52 52
training in CAP. For instance, I completed Ground
Team Leader training at the National Emergency
Services Academy last summer and am using my
GSAR and ES knowledge and skills to assist with
the revamping of our squadrons ES curriculum
and training of our cadets to be GSAR team
members. Additionally, in my dual role as PAO
and ITO, I mentor two of our most senior cadets
in PAO and ITO duties and responsibilities. While
overseas, my duties as a virtual officer include
maintaining and updating our squadrons website
and social media sites, editing the squadron news-
letter, developing ES curriculum, and any other
assignments that I may be tasked with that I can do
from afar.
While in Korea, I am still actively involved in
youth mentoring activities including the Young
Falcons of Korea (YFK), the Republic of Koreas
air cadet program. This year, I was appointed a
squadron commander for one of the units in Daegu.
Due to interest from both my CAP squadron com-
mander and the YFK Daegu-Gyeongbuk region
commander, it is my hope to work with my com-
manders on both sides of the Pacific to establish a
formal relationship between our two groups in the
near future.
Furthermore, earlier this year, I was invited by
the U.S. Embassy in Seoul to serve as a mentor and
guest-speaker for the Alumni-Youth Leadership
Project (AYLP), a leadership and public diplo-
macy program co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy
for Korean high school students, their parents,
and American student participants of the National
Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)
Program. In my presentation to AYLP and NSLI-Y
students on the topic of education, career choices,
and fulfilling your dream, I had the opportunity
to talk extensively about my experience in CAP
and how it helped shape my career goals and fuel
my desire to go out there and make a difference.
In short, at home or abroad,
I am always finding myself in
situations where I am listening
and giving advice to a variety of
people, from elementary school
students to university students,
drawing upon my experiences to
help them in any way I can. But
wherever I am, my objective as
an educator and youth mentor
is always the same: Not only do
I try to inspire my students and
cadets to fulfill their greatest
potential, I also encourage them
to utilize their knowledge and
skills to make a positive impact
in societybe it at the local,
national, or global level.
