2 What is autodiagnosis?
Conventional fault detection methods are extremely time-consuming. In the past,
numerous connections in electronic systems had to be disconnected in order to check
functions and components by means of different complex procedures. Many faults
could be resolved in this way (e.g. loose contacts or corroded connectors). However,
with time these faults would reappear. This process could also give rise to new faults,
such as twisted connectors or broken cables.
Microprocessor-based autodiagnostic systems in new vehicles offer a series of
advantages with respect to the previous system:
permanent supervision and control of sensor signals, the function of the controller
and the adjustment elements;
they provide protection, e.g. they prevent faults in engine functions;
they enable emergency operation, allowing the vehicle to reach the garage even
when the sensors have failed.
Since detected faults are stored in the controller, this information can also be used to
search for errors in the garage. This is how a diagnostic interface was created for
transferring information between the controller and the tester. Information can flow in
both directions, i.e. not only can the tester receive data, it can also send information
and instructions to the controller.
The ScanDi-Tool automobile systems tester makes it easy to carry out maintenance
and repairs and to detect and eliminate faults.
The diagnostics system, used with the documentation attached, allows you to
eliminate faults more quickly, improve the security of repairs and, consequently, reduce
repair costs.

3 How does autodiagnosis work?
All the electronic systems in a vehicle are based on the same design structure:
connected sensors supply the controller with information on the current status of the
vehicle. The controller processes this information and emits signals to control connected
adjustment elements. What criteria are used to monitor the functions of the sensors
and adjustment elements?
To understand this process, lets use the example of the G 62 coolant temperature
sensor/emitter in an engine control system.
Figure 2: Engine control system
What function does the G 62 coolant temperature sensor perform?
The engine must operate perfectly even at low speeds (idling). It must also start easily
when cold. And lastly, combustion must be optimum. To ensure these functions are
perfectly executed, the controller requires information on the temperature of the engine.
This information is supplied by the G 62 coolant temperature sensor.
The sensor is submerged in the coolant, where it measures the temperature of the
engine and sends this information to the controller. The controller then determines the
ideal firing angle, injection time and vacuum stabilisation values. Finally, this data is
sent to the adjustment elements.

The following temperature-dependant system functions are also established:
Knock control;
adjustment of the vacuum injection controller;
Lambda regulation; and
the tank ventilation system.
How does the emitter work? The measuring element of the emitter is a NTC (negative
temperature coefficient) resistance. An NTC resistance is a heat conductor. Its value
drops when temperature increases, i.e. NTC resistance voltage falls. Normally, each
tension value in NTC resistance corresponds to a temperature value.
How are faults recognised and stored?
Figure 3: Function control and fault recognition
The measuring range, determined by the controller software, is between -35 C and
+120 C. When temperature increases or decreases, the controller emits an incorrect
or invalid operation signal (i.e. abnormal operation). The error is stored in the error
memory of the controller.
This error memory stores data on the location of the fault and on the type of fault. The
data on the location of the fault describes the element that is being monitored.
Depending on the controllers capacity to determine the nature of a fault, the data on
the type of fault is emitted in messages with information on the detected fault.
If the controller detects that it is no longer receiving a signal from the temperature
sensor, it uses a substitute value instead. e.g. 80 C, to verify that the engine is still
operating. The result is defective operation of the engine during both cold and hot
starts.
If the error appears only briefly, it is stored as a "sporadic fault". The error is only
treated and stored as a "static fault" when its duration exceeds a specific time period.
7
The controller fault memory stores code instead of text. This code (formed by letters
and numbers) indicates the origin and type of fault. The tester reads this fault memory,
translates the code to text and first shows the location of the fault, as shown below:
In order to provide a better definition of the cause of the fault, the display indicates the
type of fault and its origin, as shown below. For example, the second page of the
screen may display one of the two types of error:
1/ 1 Fault No.: 00522 C +/- -->
Coolant temperature sensor G62
1/ 1 Fault type static: C +/- -->
Interrupt. / short-circuit after positive
What is the cause for this entry in the faults memory?
The voltage at the controller input for the temperature sensor is 5 volts. This would
correspond to a temperature below -35 C.
There are two possible causes of this type of fault:
1. A line interruption (see Figure 3, number 1)
The line is interrupted. In this case, the temperature sensor input displays a voltage
of 5 volts through a contact in the controller.
2. A short-circuit after positive (see Figure 3, number 2)
In the event of a short-circuit after positive (e.g. in the plug), the voltage at the
controller input for the temperature sensor is also 5 volts.
The controller cannot distinguish between both causes of the fault.
1/ 1 Fault type static: C +/- -->
Short-circuit after the earth
What is the cause of this entry in the faults memory?
The voltage at the controller input for the temperature sensor is 0 volts. This would
correspond to a temperature of over 120 C.
The cause is a short-circuit after the earth (see Figure 3, number 3). If there is a short-
circuit after the earth (e.g. due to worn insulation of the connection cable), the voltage
at the controller input for the temperature sensor is 0 volts.
However, bear in mind that errors cannot only be determined from fault texts.
The controller may either detect a signal as incorrect when the fault is not a component
fault but in the bundle of cables or in the connection.
The fault can only really be detected by studying the fault information emitted
plus the fault tables in the repair guide.

4 How is the device operated?
The steps for performing automatic diagnostics are explained on the following pages:
connecting the tester (section 4.1); and
testing the automobile system using available diagnostic functions (section 4.2).
This is followed by a description of possible adjustments and the autotest
(section 4.3).
4.1 Connecting the tester
The tester is protected against inverse polarisation for power supply purposes by the
diagnostics cable. Even so, secure protection of the input and output stages is only
guaranteed when the diagnostics cable is properly connected.
Therefore, make sure that the CKC diagnostics cable and the V.A.G 1551/1A diagnostics
cable are connected in the sequence described below.
4.1.1 CKC diagnostics cable (with fault detection):
This cable is supplied with the ScanDi-Tool and complies with current OBD (On-Board-
Diagnostic) interface standards.
1. Connect the diagnostics cable to the diagnostics connection point in the vehicle.
2. Look at the instructions on the screen. The following text should appear.
ScanDi-Tool v0x.xx +/- Q
Enter control key XX
If this message does not appear on the screen:
Check the voltage at the diagnostic connection point of the vehicle as shown in Figure
4 and check the polarity. The power supply voltage must be at least 10 volts (recharge
the battery if necessary).
Contact 4 = negative terminal of the battery (-)
Contact 16 = positive terminal of the battery (+)

3. Check the wiring of the diagnostics cable as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5: Assignation of terminals of the CKC diagnostics cable
4.1.2 Diagnostics cable V.A.G 1551/1A (with fault detection):
This diagnostics cable is available as an option and is still used in some older auto-
mobiles.
1. Connect the black diagnostic tester power supply plug to the flat contact connector
in the vehicle.
2. Look at the instructions on the screen. The following text should appear:
ScanDi-Tool v0x.xx +/- Q
Enter control key XX
If this text does not appear in the screen, connect the white plug.
If this message does not appear on the screen:
Do not connect the white plug. The power supply terminals of the tester have been
inverted or the power supply has been interrupted.

4.2 Vehicle system testing
Please bear the following in mind before testing:
The texts shown on the screens in these instructions are only examples. The real
texts that appear on the screens will depend on the controller to which the device is
connected and the programme version;
When working with the different systems, make sure you have the
corresponding repair guides.
After the tester has been connected, you will automatically be asked for a control key,
i.e.:
ScanDi-Tool v0x.xx +/- Q
Enter control key XX
First enter two numbers using the keyboard. These numbers are the control keys of
the controller. The control keys are used for selecting the different controllers in the
vehicle.
The list below contains some of the most common control keys (a detailed list appears
on page 27):
After entering the control key (e.g. "01"), the description of the corresponding system
or controller will appear on the second line next to the key:
ScanDi-Tool v0x.xx C +/- Q
01 Engine electronics
Press C to cancel entered data or Q to confirm.
12
Some control keys are not formed only by numbers (0...9) but by one number and one
letter (A...F), e.g. "7D". Enter the chosen letter by quickly pressing the corresponding
key several times. To simplify the system, the letters are printed on the corresponding
keys. Use keys 2 and 3 to access common letters A, B, C, D, AND and F, in the
same as when entering letters on mobile telephones.
Example: to enter the key 7D for "additional heating", first press key 7 and then key
3 twice in quick succession.
ScanDi-Tool v0x.xx C +/- Q
7D Additional heating
Tip:
Instead of directly entering control keys, you can use the + and - keys to "scroll"
through the list of controls and descriptions of all the systems and controllers that are
supported.
Control key 00 is a special case. Use this control key to start an automatic autotest
process:
ScanDi-Tool v0x.xx C +/- Q
00 Automatic operation
If you press Q, the tester will send a sequence of all the control keys it knows. If a
controller responds to its device identification number, this will appear on screen for a
few moments.
The tester then reads the faults memory. If faults have been stored in a system or
controller, the automatic process is suspended to display the texts of the faults detected.
After reading the faults memory, the dialogue with the controller ends and the following
control key is sent.
N.B.: Controllers with which no dialogue is established (due to line interruptions
or defects in the controllers themselves) are not shown on screen.
When the tester has sent the last control key or read the last fault message, it returns
to the screen for entering control keys (the same screen that appears when the device
is switched on).

Press the key to select individual functions
01 Engine electronics
Select function XX
The list below shows the main functions that can be selected.
Depending on the controller, other functions may be available that do not appear on
the list.
If you want to open any of these functions, enter the two figures of the corresponding
code. Alternatively, you can use the + and - keys to scroll through the functions. The
tester sends an instruction to the controller as soon as confirmation key Q is pressed.
If the selected function is not available in the controller or cannot be executed in the
current operating status, the following message will appear on the screen:
03 Adjustment elements diagnostics -->
Unknown function
14
0123456789 ENGINE XXXX -->
Code XXXXX WSC XXXXX
4.2.1 Function 01 - Ask about the controller version
If this function is selected, the screen will display the controller identification number.
The top line shows the following data:
- Left: first the controller part number, followed by the description of the component
to which it belongs (ENGINE).
- Right: the identification number of the software currently used in the controller
(provided this information is available in the controller).
The bottom line shows the current code of the controller. In encoded memory controllers,
the screen shows the current code and the garage code (WSC). The garage code
corresponds to the company identification number. It indicates the garage where the
controller was last encoded.
4.2.2 Function 02 Querying the faults memory
Important note: The texts describing the cause of the fault (i.e. the location of the
fault) on the top line of the screen and the types of fault on the second line only have
a total of 40 characters. Since 40 characters are sometimes insufficient, words are
abbreviated or shortened. If you want to view the whole texts, please consult the
corresponding repair guides.
If Function 02 "Consult faults memory" is selected, the screen first shows the total
number of faults detected, for example:
3 errors detected -->
Press the key to consult each fault number and its corresponding text.
The number 1 appears on top left of the first page of the screen, indicating it is the first
of 3 faults, i.e. the first position in the faults memory of this system. This allows you to
see which position in the faults memory is being displayed at each moment. In the
following example, the fault position is 1 of 3.
1/ 3 Error No.: 00513 C +/- -->
Engine rpm sensor G 28
Each fault has two screen pages. In this example, the first page shows the fault number
and below it the location of the fault, i.e. the cause of the fault. "G28" is the reference
of the component that you will find in the garage documentation.
15
Press the key to display the second page of the screen for each fault entry.
For example:
1/ 3 Error type sporadic: C +/- -->
no signal
This indicates the type of fault corresponding to the specific cause of the fault,
"no signal" in this example.
The top line contains the following information:
"static", referring to an existing fault; or
"sporadic", referring to faults that appear temporarily (short duration faults).
Press the key to access the next fault entry. Again, the first page of this fault entry
is displayed, followed by the second page. After all the faults have been displayed,
press the key to move to the function selection screen. Press C to return at any
time to the function selection screen.
Additionally, you can use the + and - keys to skip from one fault to another. The first
page of each fault will always be displayed. Press the key to view the second page
indicating the location of the fault.
4.2.3 Function 03 Adjustment element diagnostics
Adjustment element diagnostics is part of the verification of the electrical system.
This process can be used to check the power circuits of each adjustment element.
If Function 03 "Adjustment element diagnostics" is selected, the tester requires the
controller to activate the first adjustment element.
The following text appears on the screen:
Test adjustment elements in progress C -->
Injection valve cylinder 1 N 30
The bottom line shows the description of the adjustment element.
If you now press the key, the device will skip to the next adjustment element.
The sequence of adjustment elements is always determined by the controller.
If an adjustment element shown on the screen is not activated, check for errors in the
cable connections, in the bundle of cables or in the mechanical or electrical part.
16
04 Basic adjustment
Enter values group number
4.2.4 Function 04 - Basic adjustments
In some systems, basic adjustments have to be performed after a repair or inspection.
This means that adjustments made to the controller are all set to fixed values. If the
system is in basic adjustment mode, then it is possible to adjust, for example, the start
time. In this case, always consult the repair guides.
Basic adjustment can only be performed under the recommended operating conditions
for the vehicle. For example, engine oil temperature must be above 80 C.
Some controllers specifically supply measurement values valid in each case to support
adjustment procedures. After selecting Function 04, first enter a values group number
and press Q to confirm (also see Function 08).
The measurement values are represented by physical units (i.e. "by numbers and
letters"). The selected indication group number appears on the top line of the screen:
Basic adjustment 3 Deactivated C -->
850/min 17% 21 12.7v.OT
Press the arrow key to connect or disconnect the basic adjustment. The current status
is shown directly below the indication group number as "activated" and "deactivated".
N.B.: The meanings of the numbers that appear on the screen can be found in the
corresponding repair guide.
If you want to evaluate the measurement values in normal operating conditions, exit
Function 04 (Basic Adjustment) and go to Function 08 (Read Values Block).
4.2.5 Function 05 - Clear faults memory
Once the repair has been completed, the faults memory must be cleared using this
Function.
Before the tester issues the order to erase the memory, first check whether the faults
memory has been consulted and read. If it has been consulted, the following will
appear in the screen:
05 Clear faults memory -->
Faults memory cleared
If you cannot clear the faults memory, the tester reads the memory again after the first
attempt and shows the pending faults. In this case, the faults must be repaired before
they can be erased.
17
4.2.6 Function 06 End dialogue
Function 06 is used to end the dialogue with the controller. The tester moves on to the
enter control key function. A new control key can now be entered. The following text
will appear on the screen:
ScanDi-Tool v0x.xx C +/- Q
Enter control key XX
Tip:
Press C to return from the functions selection screen to the control key entry screen
at any time.
4.2.7 Function 07 - Encode controller
N.B.: You must consult the repair guide to perform this function!
Use this function to change the content of a cell in the controller memory. In other
words, you can adapt the way the controller operates to different conditions.
For example:
to different engines, transmissions, bodywork or frames;
to different quality fuels;
to legislation in the importing country.
When Function 07 "Encode controller" is selected, the following text will appear on the
screen:
07 Encode controller
Enter code XXXXXXX
0123456789 ENGINE XXXX -->
Code 00111 WSC 01234
Depending on the type of controller installed, a 5 or 7-digit code may be entered here.
Press Q to confirm the entry. If the attempt to encode the controller is rejected, an
Encoding not accepted message will appear on the screen.
Once the controller has been correctly encoded, it sends a message with the current
encoder identification number and the corresponding garage code (WSC).
18
08 Read values block
Enter values group number XXX
The selected values group numbers appear on the top line (number 3 in the example).
To view another measurement values group, press C and enter the desired group
number. Use the + and - keys (group number plus or minus 1) to move forward or
backward sequentially in the values groups.
N.B.: The explanations of the figures that appear in the screen are contained in
the corresponding repair guide.
4.2.9 Function 10 - Adaptation
N.B.: Consult the repair guide for more information on "Adaptation".
This allows you to modify correction values in the controller (e.g. rpm in deceleration
or injection mode) for each vehicle. This must be performed in three stages: a) read
adaptation; b) check adaptation; and c) store adaptation.
This Function also allows you to d) clear learned values.
4.2.8 Function 08 - Read values block
If Function 08 is activated, the controller sends measurement values to the screen.
The values appear on the second line. These values provide information on the
operating status of the system with respect to the connected sensors.
The values will often help you to locate and eliminate faults.
Since not all the values can be evaluated at the same time, they are placed in values
groups, which may be viewed on screen in the form of group numbers, one after the
other. The repair corresponding guides contain the value group numbers for each
controller.
If you enter Function 08, the following message will appear on the screen:
After you have entered the values group number and confirmed the function by
pressing Q, the values will appear on the second line of the screen:
08 read values block 3 C +/-
850 rpm 17% 21 12.7v.OT
19
10 Adaptation
Enter channel number XX
b) Check adaptation
Press the key to enter a new adaptation value and press Q to confirm.
a) Read adaptation
To read the existing adaptation value, first enter the two-digit channel number and
confirm it by pressing Q. The controller then sends the value used at that moment
and which the tester indicates under the corresponding channel number.
Channel 10 Adaptation 12345 -->
Channel 10 Adaptation 12345 -->
Enter adaptation value XXXXX
In many applications, it may be useful to observe, together with the adaptation value,
other related measurement values.
If the channel has already been assigned a measurement values block, this will appear
on the second line of the screen.
The form in which the measurement values are presented depends on the type of
controller. The following types of data may appear on the screen:
Canal 10 Adaptation 12001
The modified value has been stored
Channel 10 Adaptation 12345 -->
850 rpm 17% 21 12.7v.OT
c) Store adaptation
If you have found the correct adaptation value, press Q to confirm.
d) Clear learned values
In an electronic system, i.e. a system capable of learning, many adjustments (such as
rpm in vacuum) are adapted to a certain degree to the condition of the engine, thus
obviating the need to perform manual adjustments.
20
In the event of repair or after changing parts, these learned values may have to be
deleted in order to perform basic adjustments. This can be done by entering channel
number 00.

7 Where can I find this and what does it mean?
Adaptation values Adjustment values stored in the controller (e.g. adjustment of
rpm in vacuum). These may vary from vehicle to vehicle and may only be adjusted
in specific circumstances in each vehicle (see repair guide).
Autodiagnosis The controller monitors connected components and in the event of
a component fault, this ensures that the controller remains functional for an unlimited
period. Detected faults are stored in the controller faults memory.
Automatic testing Use control key 00 to view sequentially the content of the faults
memory of all the controllers installed in the vehicle.
Basic adjustment To make adjustments, disconnect the controller adjustments and
assign basic values to all the values.
CAN line Double line used to activate controllers in new vehicle systems.
Channel number Number of a measurement values channel in the controller. The
measurement value of this channel appears on screen after the channel number
has been entered.
Control key entry Operating level that appears after the power supply has been
connected.
Controller Electronic device for controlling and monitoring vehicle functions.
Controller function Activity/Function performed by the controller
Controller ID This is displayed by the tester after selecting the controller. It contains
the replacement number, clear text, software version, code and, where appropriate,
garage code for the controller to which it is connected.
Controller version Current construction status of the controller.
Diagnostic cable Cable connecting the vehicle and the tester.
Diagnostic connection Connection point for the diagnostic cable in the tester or in
the vehicle.
Diagnostic interface Connection point of the tester and the controller for exchanging
data.
Encoded controller Universal controller that can be adapted to different vehicles
by entering a specific code.
26
Faults memory The faults memory is a controller component. It stores all the faults
that the controller has detected.
Garage code (WSC) 5-digit number of the company where the controller was last
encoded or adapted.
Inverse polarisation Inversion of the electric power connection cables.
K Line This fulfils two functions:
- data exchange through the K line between the tester and the controller;
- activation of the connected controller through the K line.

Measurement values block Fixed group of measurement values of the controller.
This group can be viewed on screen by entering the corresponding values group
number.
Memory cell Data storage element located in an electronic circuit.
NTC resistance Measurement element dependent on temperature. The resistance
value decreases as temperature increases, which means that NTC resistance
voltage is lower. A temperature value is assigned to every voltage value.
Operating level Status of the tester when it is waiting for data to be entered via the
keyboard.
Physical unit The unit (e.g. C) of a physical magnitude (for example, temperature)
Protection against inverse polarisation Protection of the tester against inverse
polarisation.
Screen Unit for displaying and presenting tester data.
Sensor Measurement data recording system
Sensor signal Measurement values of a data recording system.
Values group number Number of a group fixed in the controller for measurement
values. The measurement values group is displayed in the tester after the values
group number has been entered.
