FEC16x0 Field Equipment Controller Installation Instructions 1

Applications
The FEC16x0 Controller is a member of the Metasys
system Field Equipment Controller family. The FEC16
is designed to run a variety of pre-engineered or user-
programmed Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning
(HVAC) applications, and provides the inputs/outputs
required for these applications.
The FEC16x0 controller (MS-FEU16x0-0) consists of
two parts, which are also available separately: the
mounting base (MS-FEB1610-0) and the controller
cover (MS-FEC16x0-0). Two versions of the cover are
offered: the FEC1620 with a built-in Liquid Crystal
Display (LCD) and the FEC1610 without a display.
FECs without a display can use the DIS1710 Local
Controller Display.

FEC16x0 Field Equipment Controller Installation Instructions 4
Mounting
The mounting base may be mounted without the
controller cover. If you mount the mounting base
without the controller cover, ensure that there is
sufficient clearance to allow later mounting of the
controller cover.
Follow the guidelines below when mounting an FEC16:
Ensure the mounting surface can support the
FEC16 and any user-supplied enclosure.
Mount the FEC16 in the proper orientation. See
Figure 4 and Figure 5.
Mount the FEC16 on an even surface whenever
possible.
Use shims or washers to mount the unit securely
on the mounting surface.
Mount the FEC16 in areas free of corrosive vapors
and observe the environmental limitations listed in
the Technical Specifications section.
Do not mount the FEC16 on surfaces prone to
vibration, such as duct work, or in areas where
electromagnetic emissions from other devices or
wiring can interfere with FEC16x0 Controller
communication.
Allow sufficient space for cable and wire
connections (minimum of 50 mm [2 in.] in each
direction).
On panel or enclosure mount applications, observe the
guidelines below:
Do not install the FEC16 in an airtight enclosure.
Mount the FEC16 so that the enclosure wall or the
transformer does not obstruct ventilation of or
radiate heat into the FEC16x0 Controller housing.
Wall Mount Applications
To mount the FEC16 on a wall (or other vertical
surface):
1. Ensure that all three mounting clips are pulled
outward and snapped firmly into the extended
position. See Figure 3.
2. Mark the location of the three mounting holes on
the wall using the dimensions in Figure 3 and
according to the orientation in Figure 4.
(Alternatively, hold the FEC16 up to the wall as a
template and mark the hole locations.)
3. Drill holes at the locations marked in Step 2, and
insert appropriate wall anchors in all three holes (if
necessary).
4. Hold the FEC16 in place, and insert the screws
through the mounting clips and into the holes.
Carefully tighten all of the screws.
IMPORTANT: Do not overtighten the mounting
screws. Overtightening the screws may damage the
mounting clips.

FEC16x0 Field Equipment Controller Installation Instructions 5
DIN Rail Mount Applications
To mount the FEC16 on a DIN rail:
1. Securely mount a 20.3 cm (8 in.) or longer section
of DIN rail horizontally and centered in the required
space.
2. Ensure that the bottom two mounting clips are
pulled outward and snapped firmly into the
extended position. See Figure 3.
3. Hang the FEC16 by the DIN rail hooks (Figure 3)
on the top track of the DIN rail, and position the
FEC16 DIN rail channel snugly against the tracks
of the DIN rail.
4. Push the bottom mounting clips up to secure the
FEC16 on the DIN rail tracks.
To remove the FEC16 from the DIN rail, snap the
bottom DIN clips to the extended position, and carefully
lift the FEC16 off the DIN rail.
Attaching the Cover
You may attach the cover before or after wiring the
FEC16.
1. Place the hinge tabs (cover) onto the top of the
hinge slots (in the mounting base). See Figure 6.
Note: Do not fully insert the tabs into the slots. If
the tabs are fully inserted into the slots, the cover
may not close.
2. Close the cover and tighten the cover screw to
secure the cover to the base.
Wiring

FEC16x0 Field Equipment Controller Installation Instructions 6
Note: The FEC16 controller should be at one end of
the SA Bus daisy chain. If multiple Input/Output
Modules (IOMs) are used, set the End-of-Line (EOL)
switch on the last IOM.
FC Bus Terminal Block
Wire the Field Controller (FC) Bus in a daisy chain to
other devices on the FC Bus and the supervisory
controller (Figure 8).
Note: The Shield terminal (SHLD) on the FC Bus
terminal block is isolated and can be used as a
convenient terminal for connecting the bus cable shield
(Figure 8).
Sensor Port
The Sensor Bus port on the bottom-right of the IOM is
an RJ -12, 6-position modular jack that provides a
connection for an NS sensor or the Wireless
Commissioning Converter. See Table 1 for more
information. The Sensors Port pin assignment is shown
in (Figure 9).
Device Address DIP Switches
Ensure the device address DIP switches are set to the
appropriate address (in the range of 4-127). Ensure
that DIP switch 128 is set to Off, which disables
wireless mode on an FEC16 that uses the ZFR1800
Series Wireless Field Bus System. For more details on
setting the DIP switches, see the Setting the FC Bus
Address on page 12.
Wireless Installation
To install an FEC16 for use with the ZFR1800 Series
Wireless Field Bus System, perform the steps specific
to your model: see Installing FEC1610 Controller
(Wireless) or Installing FEC1620 Controller (Wireless).
Installing FEC1610 Controller (Wireless)
To install the FEC1610 controller for use with the
ZFR1800 Series Wireless Field Bus System:
1. Terminate input/output point wiring at the controller
per engineering drawings. See Figure 1 for
terminal locations.
2. If you have SA Bus devices, such as Input/Output
Modules (IOMs), wire them to the FC Bus terminal
block (not to the SA Bus terminal block) in a daisy-
chained fashion.
3. If you need to install a DIS1710 Local Controller
Display, balancing network sensor, or Wireless
Commissioning Converter (BTCVT) at the
FEC1610 controller, install a ZFRCBL wire harness
between the SA Bus and FC Bus terminal blocks
as shown in Figure 10.

FEC16x0 Field Equipment Controller Installation Instructions 7
Note: The ZFRCBL wire harness is necessary only
when a DIS1710 Local Controller Display, balancing
network sensor, or BTCVT is to be used at the
FEC1610 Controller. The ZFRCBL wire harness
combines +15 VDC from the SA Bus terminal with +,
and -, and COM from the FC Bus terminal to provide a
powered jack for SA Bus devices.
4. If applicable, connect the DIS1710 Local Controller
Display, network sensor, or BTCVT to the RJ -12
jack at the end of the ZFRCBL wire harness
(Figure 11). Use a 1:2 phone jack splitter if you
need to connect two devices to the wire harness.
5. Connect the ZFR1811 Wireless Field Bus Router to
the Sensor port RJ -12 jack (Figure 11). For details
on the ZFR1811 Router, refer to the ZFR1811
Wireless Field Bus Router Installation Instructions
(Part No. 24-10325-10).
6. Ensure the device address DIP switches are set to
the appropriate address (in the range of 4-127).
Set DIP switch 128 to the On position, which
enables wireless mode on an FEC16 that uses the
ZFR1800 Series Wireless Field Bus System. Also
see Determining the FC Bus Address on page 11.
Installing FEC1620 Controller (Wireless)
To install the FEC1620 Controller for use with the
ZFR1800 Series Wireless Field Bus System:
1. Terminate input/output point wiring at the controller
per engineering drawings. See Figure 2 for
terminal locations.
2. Install a ZFRCBL wire harness between the SA
Bus and FC Bus terminal blocks as shown in
Figure 10.
Note: The ZFRCBL wire harness is required when
the FEC1620 Controller is used with the ZFR1800
Series Wireless Field Bus System.
3. Connect the ZFR1811 Router to the RJ -12 jack at
the end of the ZFRCBL wire harness (Figure 12).

enables wireless mode on an FEC16 that uses the
ZFR1800 Series Wireless Field Bus System. For
more details on setting the DIP switches, see the
Setting the FC Bus Address on page 12.
Power Wiring
To wire the FEC16 for power, connect the 24 VAC
supply power wires from the transformer to the
removable 3-terminal plug as shown in Figure 13. The
middle terminal is not used. Power supply wire colors
may be different on transformers not manufactured by
J ohnson Controls. Follow the transformer
manufacturers instructions or the project installation
drawings.
Note: The 24 VAC power should be connected to all
network devices so transformer phasing is uniform
across the devices. Powering devices with uniform
24 VAC supply power phasing reduces noise,
interference, and ground loop problems. The FEC does
not require an earth ground connection.

Setup and Adjustments
Determining the FC Bus Address
The FC Bus address switch sets a unique address for
this controller on the FC Bus. You must set the FECs
device address for your field bus application.
1. See Table 2 for alternative wire gauges and lengths.
2. The SA Bus terminals and the RJ -style modular Sensor Port are connected internally.
3. The SA Bus and FC Bus specifications in this table are for Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP) bus communications at
38.4k baud. For more information, refer to the MS/TP Communications Bus Technical Bulletin (LIT-12011034).

FEC16x0 Field Equipment Controller Installation Instructions 12
Set consecutive device addresses 4 through 127 for
Field Equipment Controllers and other master devices
on the FC Bus. Use sequential addressing with no
gaps in the device address range to ensure best FC
Bus performance.
Note: Switch 128 on the device address DIP switch
block enables or disables an FEC to operate on a
ZFR1800 Series Wireless Field Bus. Position switch
128 Off for wired FC bus applications. Position switch
128 On only for wireless bus applications.
Table 3 shows and describes the valid FC Bus and
SA Bus devices addresses for FECs and IOMs on
J ohnson ControlsMS/TP communications bus
applications.
Setting the FC Bus Address
Set the address of the FEC16 using the DIP switches
on the face of the FEC16. The address equals the sum
of the numbers set to ON. For example, if the first (1),
the third (4), and the fifth (16) DIP switches are set to
ON, the device address is 21 (1 +4 +16 =21). See
Figure 15.
FC Bus End-of-Line Switch
The FC Bus End-of-Line termination switch allows you
to designate the FEC16 as the end of the FC Bus. The
default position is OFF. If the FEC16 is at the end of a
daisy chain of devices on the FC Bus, set the EOL
switch to the ON position. See Figure 16.
Setting the Binary Output INT/EXT Jumpers
The Binary Output jumpers (OUT1 through OUT3) are
located on the circuit board in the mounting base near
the binary outputs. These jumpers select whether the
output provides internal power to the load (INT) or
requires external power (EXT). See Figure 17.
When set to the INT position, the FEC16 is the power
source for the Binary Output and both sides of the load
can be wired directly to the OUTx and COMx terminals.
Setting the jumper to the EXT position isolates the
Binary Outputs, and power must come from one or
more external sources. Do not wire the load directly to
the OUTx and COMx terminals. Wire one side of the
load to the source and the other side of the load to the
OUTx terminal. Wire the other side of the external
power source to the COMx terminal.
Table 3: FC Bus Device Address Descriptions
