[10]
Students want to use logarithms in their first step. This is a step in the wrong direction. log 0 is
not defined and there is no rule to handle log(A + B - C). The logarithm function is not linear.
Remember you can only apply the function to both sides of the equation.

Some students also make the mistake of regarding loand g as three letters that you can
multiply and divide with as you please.

QUESTION 2
Binomial theorem is on the information sheets. Do each term and combine for final answer.

QUESTION 3
Solve the following system of equations for x,y and z using Cramers rule:

5
4 1
0 5
2 4
0 8
3 2
= +
= +
= + +
z y
x z
x y

[HINT: You may rewrite the equations before starting to solve. Pay attention to how you write
down your answer. Your reasoning must be clear to the marker.]

Method of Cramers rule must be followed. Rearrange equations so that variables are in
columns. Put a 0 where needed. Do not throw away the negative sign. Variables in this case
1/x, 1/y and 1/z. To solve for x,y and z the final answer must be inverted.

Re-arrange:

Pay attention to the way you are writing down your answer. Although your final answer may be
correct you may lose marks if mathematical notation is used wrongly. Check your answers in
one of the original equations.

Students did not factorise fully. How do we know that
2
4 4 1 x x + can factorise? Look at the quadratic formula.
The discriminant, that is the part under the square root can be used. If
2
4 b ac is zero or a complete square, we
can factorise. For this answer ( ) ( )( )
2
2
4 4 4 4 1 16 16 0 b ac = = = . Of course you can always just use
the quadratic formula to find the roots.
Check your answer by combining the partial fractions. This will not help solve the problem of not factorising fully
but other calculation errors can be caught.

8 GUIDELINES TO WRITING THE EXAMINATION

Dear student

In terms of University policy admission to the examination is granted to students on submission
of compulsory assignment 1 for MAT1581 provided that there is no financial block against you.
All assignments will count towards your year mark.

Check your examination date and examination centre on myUNISA. You should also receive a
letter from the examination division with your year mark and examination date. If you do not
receive such a letter you can print it from myUNISA, or contact your nearest regional office to
make sure you have the correct date and qualify to write the examination.

To pass this subject your final mark must be 50 % or more, subject to a subminimum mark
of 40% in the examination. A subminimum of 40% means that if you receive less than 40% in
the exam you fail and in this case your year mark does not count.

Calculation of Final mark = 0,1 (year mark) + 0,9 (examination mark >40%)
Or = (examination mark <40%)

Year mark = 0,4 (assignment 1) + 0,6 (assignment 2)

PLEASE NOTE: CONDITIONS ON EXAMINATIONS
You will have only one examination opportunity. You will have to write it, during the
examination period linked to your registration cycle, Semester 2 for 2012.
An additional examination opportunity (supplementary) will only be granted under the following
conditions/circumstances:
1. If you obtained at least 40% or relevant subminimum decided by senate in the
examination paper written. If you qualify, you will be automatically registered for the
additional examination opportunity and your account will be debited by the relevant
amount accordingly. The supplementary date will be printed on your examination results.
Your yearmark do not count in this case. You must obtain 50% in the supplementary
examination to pass the subject. Check on guidelines for the supplementary with the
lecturer.
2. If you are unable to write the examination for a very good reason, such as illness or for
specific compassionate reasons, you must apply for a supplementary examination
opportunity through Corporate Examinations within 14 days of the examination date of
the specific examination paper. (examadmission@unisa.ac.za ) An acceptable
medical certificate must substantiate reasons pertaining to illness and accidents.
Compassionate reasons will be limited to immediate family members and must be
substantiated by acceptable documentation. If your request is successful the relevant
fee will be charged to your account.
In this case your yearmark will form part of the final mark subject to a subminimum of
40% in the examination as explained above.

To write an exam is like the art of war. When you step into the exam center you should be
mentally, intellectually and physically prepared to write the examination. Continually repeat to
yourself Read the question. Analise the question. Answer the question. Check your answer.

To prepare for the exam:
1. You should work through your study guides again.
2. Learn all the definitions and laws.
3. See that you understand all the examples.
4. Please work through all the assignment questions and the post-tests in your lecture
notes again. All these questions are from past papers.
5. Remember the paper is not set on your assignment but on your lecture notes. There will
be no direct questions in the examination on (Module 9 Unit 10). All other units in
Module 9 are important. Pay special attention to Study guide 3.
6. Memorize your subject code MAT1581 to ensure that you write the correct paper
and fill in the cover correctly in the examination.

Have you memorized your student number?

The November paper will be two hours and 80 marks. The approximate mark allocation is:

Study Guide 1 20
Study Guide 2 20
Study Guide 3 40

The formulae will be supplied in the same format as in your tutorial letter 101/2013.

Most students fail Mathematics because they do not approach the examination paper correctly.
Three past papers were included in Tutorial Letter 1 to help you. Here are some thoughts on
these papers specifically and examination papers in general.
The order of the questions need not follow the order of the units in your study guide. Your
paper can start with any topic and follow any order. Remember that the form and nature of
the paper may differ. The only determining factor is the syllabus (your study guides).

Your answers should be in numerical order. You need not answer the questions in numerical
order. Leave enough space so that the marker will be able to mark the questions in the correct
order. If you decide to start with question 4 leave five pages open for questions 1 to 3. If you
did not leave enough space for an answer, refer the marker to the correct place, for example
QUESTION 3 CONTINUES after QUESTION 10 answer book 2 page 3.
You may not write on the question paper. All writing must be done in your examination script
(answer book). Write the QUESTION number clearly. Note I used capital letters and underlined
the question. Draw a line after you have answered all the sub questions asked in a main

20

question. Do not use correction fluid or write your final answer in pencil. Make corrections by
drawing a line through the wrong answer. When writing down your answers try to make life as
easy as possible for the marker. Draw a line through all rough work before submitting your
answer book.
There will always be a mix of easy and difficult questions. The examiner usually tries to start
with an easy question that everybody will be able to answer. 40 % of the questions will be easy
for all students. 35% will be easy for students who worked through their study material carefully
and 25% of the questions will be difficult for most students.

The solutions for preparation paper 3 are written out as detailed as possible. All the steps in the
solutions are not necessary in your answers. The marker must be able to follow your reasoning.
The steps in your answer must show the marker how you obtained your answer.

Do not omit equal signs, division lines and brackets where needed. Without these important
logic symbols your answer is meaningless and wrong. You will earn zero marks for such
answers.

If you pass you will be able to enroll for MAT2691 in semester 2, 2013.

If you registered for semester 1 and found you did not have enough time you cannot just
transfer to semester two. The university do not allow transfers to another semester. There are
financial and academic penalties as set out in the myStudies brochure for 2013. Most students
wait too long to cancel and become responsible for the full fees for semester 1. You have to
register for semester 2 separately. The registration office will be able to explain all the details to
you if you have problems. (e-mail scientia@unisa.ac.za)

Warning: You need to plan your studies very carefully in 2013. As all systems the semester
system has advantages and disadvantages. Do not fail because of bad planning. The
guideline is that you must be able to spend 1.2 hours(72 minutes) per day [including weekends]
per module (subject).

I wish you success with the examination and your future studies.
