In order to enable the market participants analysis etc., to track the
various ups and downs in the Indian stock market, the -0change
has introduced in $12> an equity stock inde0 called B*--*-8*-B
that subsequently became the barometer of the moments of the
share prices in the Indian *tock market. It is a "/arket

representing a sample of large, well-established and leading
companies. !he base year of *ense0 is $132-31. !he *ense0 is
widely reported in both domestic and international markets through
print as well as electronic media.
*ense0 is calculated using a market capitaliation weighted method.
As per this methodology, the level of the inde0 reflects the total
market value of all ;%-component stocks form different industries
related to particular base period. !he total market value of a
company is determined by multiplying the price of its stock by the
number of shares outstanding. *tatisticians call an inde0 of a set of
combined variables &such as price and number of shares) a
composite Inde0. An Inde0ed number is used to represent the
results of this calculation is order to make the value easier to work
with the track over a time. It is much easier to graph a chart based
on Inde0ed values than one based on actual values world over

!rading in shares is old phenomena its regulation had been started
when securities contract act had been formed in $14>. !ransfer of
resources from those with idle resources to others who have a
productive need for them is most efficiently achieved through the

to investments.
SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE BOARD OF INDIA (SEBI) is a
