Secure in Grace (Part 2)

Summary
Some Christians want to know: Is it possible to lose our salvation once we are saved? It is
possible, but God has made it difficult. We are made right by God, and once we have a
relationship with Him it is difficult to turn away.


A. We all fall short and fail in many different ways. We cannot compare our sins by how
good or bad we think they are.
1. When a person is born again, his spirit is sanctified and perfected forever.
a. Humans are tri-part beingsspirit, soul (mind, will, and emotions), and
body.
b. The spirit is the part that is born again. The soul has to be renewed with
the Word of God.
2. All Christians come up short at some point. We all sin.
a. To know to do right (or good) and refuse to do it is sin (James 4:17).
b. Whatever is done without faith is sin (Romans 14:23).
c. If we offend in one point of the Law, we are guilty of offending all of the
Law (James 2:10).
3. Although we are prone to fall short in one way or the other, it doesnt mean we
should want to continue sinning (Romans 6:1, 2).
a. As born-again Christians, we have Gods grace to help us overcome the
sin in our lives.
b. We (our spirits) have been made new (2 Corinthians 5:17). However, our
souls have to be renewed with the Word.
c. Our new nature does not want to sin because it is no longer our nature
to do so.
d. Therefore, after salvation, there is a conflict within our souls when we
sin.
B. Scripture does not teach once saved always saved. However, we cannot sin away our
salvation, but we can reject (or renounce) our salvation. But to renounce our faith, we
have to be hardened against God (Hebrews 6:4-6; Hebrews 3:13, 14; Matthew 12:31,
32).
1. In his younger years, Paul was a blasphemerbut he did so out of ignorance
and unbelief (1 Timothy 1:13).
2. God has made it difficult for us to renounce our salvation.
a. For instance, when we do so due to our emotions or out of ignorance it
doesnt count.
b. We have to be born again, and baptized with the Holy Spirit.
c. We have to be mature Christians, drawn by God.
d. We have to operate in all the gifts of the Spirit.
C. Jesus has taken the punishment for sin. He has taken upon Himself Gods judgment for
sin because someone had to pay the price for the sin of mankind.
1. Jesus doesnt cut us off because we are not producing fruit. He holds us up until
we do (John 15:2).
a. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every
branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more
fruit (John 15:2).
2. According to The New Strongs Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, Taketh
awaymeans to lift up or hold up.
3. People living under the old covenant made sacrifices as part of the old covenant.
They had not accepted Jesus by faith, therefore they werent born again
(Hebrews 10:26-29).
a. Some scriptures are directed toward those who are not born again.
Those of us who are saved have crucified the flesh (1 Corinthians 6:9-
11; Galatians 5:19-24).
4. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth,
there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 10:26).
a. Every sin is done willfully. The scripture above is referring to the Jews
who were making sacrifices as part of the old covenant requirements.
b. They rejected the sacrifice of Jesus, and decided to go back to the old
method of sacrifice under the old covenant.
c. The scripture explains that there are no more sacrifices left except the
blood of Jesus.
