Vocabulary and Grammar Program

Vocabulary
Collect 25 unknown or unfamiliar words as you read each novel (or use the lists I supply for each novel on MB),
noting their usage. If you think you know all the words in the novel, revisit some of the words that you may not be
completely clear on its specific usage or connotation. Number each word, provide its source (the sentence or at
least clause in which it was used), its definition (making sure to choose the definition that fits its usage), part of
speech, and synonym, then use it in an original sentence. These are due on the day of the last literary discussion
for each novel. See example for how to organize the information:
1. abject: (adj.) cast down in spirit. Synonyms: servile, spiritless
Source: This was not because he was cowardly and abject.
Original: When the rejection letter came from Yale, Divya read it with abject sorrow.

Reflection: Once you have analyzed the sentence, provide your reflection on why you think its a good sentence;
what about it works? Then write an original sentence indicating the same sentence structure including all the

The due date for this analysis and modeling is on the six week calendar.
Parts of Speech:

On an exceptionally hot evening early in July, a young man came out of the garret in which
he lodged in S. Place and walked slowly, as though in hesitation, towards K. bridge.

Sentence Parts and Clauses:

On an exceptionally hot evening early in July, a young man came out of the garret in which
he lodged in S. Place and walked slowly, as though in hesitation, towards K. bridge.

Phrases:

On an exceptionally hot evening early in July, a young man came out of the garret in which
he lodged in S. Place and walked slowly, as though in hesitation, towards K. bridge.

Reflection:
Through the use of prepositional phrases placed at the beginning, middle, and end of this opening
sentence of Crime and Punishment, Dostoyevsky manages to give the reader information about the
weather, Roskolnikovs living conditions (garret = small room, usually cramped, in an attic), his
attitude (slowly and uncertainly), and his movement. The use of multiple prepositional phrases, two
action verbs, and a simile after the independent clause to further modify the character and action
reflect the stop-start sort of movement of the character.

Sentence Modeling:

At his last campaign stop a day before the national convention, the presidential candidate
stepped to the stage to the enthusiastic cheering of his adoring fans and strode confidently,
as though hed already won the election, toward the podium.
