Toyota' s automotive business, including sales finance, accounts for more than 90% of
the company' s total sales, which came to a consolidated 17.29 trillion in the fiscal year
to March 2004. Its diversified operations include telecommunications and prefabricated
housing.
Toyota continues to pursue growth in unison with society and believes a harmonious
relationship with the enviroment, the global economy, local communities and its
stakeholders is the key to achieving long-term, stable growth. As a result, it is investing
aggressively in next-generation technologies to develop automobiles that are greener,
safer and more fun to drive.
The Toyota Production System has become the basis for highly efficient " lean"
manufacturing in industries worldwide. To guide the continuing evolution of Toyota' s
worldwide operations, Toyota announced its " Global Vision 2010" . Building on the
principles set out in its " Toyota Way 2001" booklet, " Global Vision 2010" outlines the
management direction and target toward which all employees of Toyota and the Toyota
Group should strive in the 21st century.

ahead of our competitors, this phase focuses on new components and systems
research.

5-1. Parts supply / after-sales service

Toyota is implementing the " just-in-time" concept, one of the main elements of

the Toyota Production System, to improve parts distribution between TMC and its
distributors and dealers.
Toyota established TACTI Corporation jointly with Denso and Aisin in April 1996.
TACTI Corp. procures and sells after-market auto parts and accessories separately
from genuine Toyota parts across the Japanese market through its " jms" car service
and accessories chain.
TMC is making every effort to enhance its after-sales service organization and
activities in every country and improve technical and customer handling skills
through the Toyota Service Human Resources Development System.

5-6. Social contributions

With

the aim of becoming a corporate citizen respected by international

society, Toyota is conducting a wide range of philanthropic activities
throughout the world. Its activities cover five major areas: education, the
environment, culture and the arts, international exchange and local
communities.

INTERNATIONAL - ENVIRONMENT AND TECHNOLOGY

In 2000, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) launched
the Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program,
in commemoration of TMC' s receipt of the Global
500 Award* received in 1999 from the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP). Based on the theme
of " Social Investment for Sustainable Development" , the
program provides grants to practical, regionally rooted
projects in Japan and overseas. A total of 170 million yen will be awarded in grants to the
10 organizations that were selected for FY2003. Since the program started in 1999, 48
recipients have been awarded a total of 710 million yen.

OTHER
ACTIVITIES

* Established by UNEP to recognize individuals or organizations that contribute to greater

environmental protection or improvement in terms of sustainable development.

U.S.A. - EDUCATION
Toyota has supported the Parent and Child Education
(PACE) program in partnership with the National
Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) since 1991, to
promote literacy between children and their parents.
In 1998, the Toyota Families in Schools Program
(TFSP) was established to bring fundamental changes
in the interaction between schools and parents. In
this program, unemployed parents without high school diplomas share in an educational
experience with their school-aged children.
PAN EUROPE - ENVIRONMENT
Since 2003, Toyota has been supporting the Schools
for Sustainable Development Community Action
Program in partnership with Groundwork, aiming
to promote local school-community partnerships
to identify and implement practical small-scale
environment-improvement projects in the U.K., Poland
and the Czech Republic. It raises environmental
awareness and provides hands-on experience for
students, teachers and local communities.

5-6. Social contributions

PAN - EUROPE - TRAFFIC SAFETY
Since 2003, Toyota has been supporting a Red Cross
road safety and first-aid campaign for children in 26
European countries.
The overall objective is to reduce the number of
children and young people who are injured or killed in
traffic accidents. So far, some 750,000 schoolchildren
have learned about road safety and what to do in the
event of an accident.

CHINA - THE ENVIRONMENT

In 2001, Toyota started an afforestation program in
cooperation with the Green Earth Center, the forestry
bureau of the Fengning Man Autonomous County and
the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the suburban
Beijing province of Hebei, which is in a critical state
of desertification. Toyota has also engaged in
technical cooperation, such as R&D of droughtresistant trees and environmental monitoring.

KOREA - EDUCATION
Toyota initiated a Lecture Course at Seoul National
University in 2004. The course aims to spread
understanding of Korean and Japanese culture for
the younger generation, primarily undergraduate and
graduate students. As part of the program, Seoul
National University provides an open lecture for the
general public.

CAMBODIA/THAILAND - HUMAN SERVICES

Toyota has been supporting land mine abolition
activities organized by the Japan Alliance for
Humanitarian Demining Support (JAHDS). The group
develops mine detection technologies and demining
system. It aims to save people in warring areas from
becoming land mine victims.

ASIA AND PACIFIC REGION - HUMAN SERVICES

TMC and its overseas affiliates supported contributions for the victims of the Dec. 26
Indian Ocean tsunami (including employee fund-raising and company match-funding),
hoping for the full recovery of the affected communities, in addition to various relief
supplies for the disaster.

71

72

5-6. Social contributions

JAPAN - CULTURE AND THE ARTS

IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY

Toyota has held symposiums and workshops

throughout Japan since 1996 that aim to draw out
and support the artistic talents of differently-abled
people. The " Toyota Able Art Forum" seeks to nurture
social recognition and increase awareness of the
abilities of such artists.

Six Vehicle Categories Achieve 2010 Fuel Efficiency Standards

In FY2003, all six Toyota vehicle series that were new or underwent complete redesign
cleared the 2010 Fuel Efficiency Standards. Vehicles in the 2,016-2,265kg category
(which did not achieve the standards the previous year) also achieved the 2010 Fuel
Efficiency Standards in FY2003, for a total of six out of seven vehicle weight categories.
The number of gasoline-powered passenger vehicles meeting the 2010 Fuel Efficiency
Standards increased by 8% from the previous year to reach 83% of total production.

JAPAN - INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE

Actual Fuel Efficiency of Toyota Vehicles in FY2003

The international educational organization, " Up With

opportunity to travel abroad and give musical
performances onstage. Toyota has sponsored this
international exchange program in Japan since 1996.

All Toyota plants have continued to maintain zero landfill waste*, a goal first achieved in
December 2000. In FY2003, Toyota took actions toward achieving zero landfill waste at its 14
non-production sites, such as its production engineering divisions, logistics centers, the Head
Office administration building and hospital and clinics. By taking steps such as sorting materials
such as metals, glass and plastic generated by production engineering divisions, Toyota
achieved zero landfill waste at its 14 non-production bases, in December.

Toyota Group Announces EXPO 2005 AICHI, JAPAN pavilion Performance

In December 2004, The Toyota Group
announced details of its performance plans
for the Toyota Group Pavilion at EXPO
2005 AICHI, JAPAN. Under the theme of
" The Dream, Joy and Inspiration of Mobility
in the 21st Century," performances will Yves P>pin
introduce the concepts of " Mobility in
Harmony with the Earth" and " The Appeal of Mobility Achieving the Dream and Joy of Worldwide Movement."
The performances will showcase future technologies and
vehicle possibilities that form part of the Group' s vision for
the society of tomorrow, reflecting Toyota Group' s efforts
toward achieving optimum mobility, harmony with society,
and meeting the needs of individuals.
The performance will consist of two parts, a Welcome
Show and a Main Show, the latter produced by Yves P>pin,
the world-famous leader of the Paris-based production
company eca2.
The Welcome Show will feature Toyota Partner Robots developed to assist humans with kindness and intelligence
- in a robot musical band, along with a DJ robot that
engages in entertaining dialogue with the (human) emcee.
The Main Show, titled " MOVE, LIVE," has the theme of
" In Movement is Freedom. In Movement is Life." Single
passenger i-unit concept vehicles and a mountable,
walking robot i-foot will join with dancers in a " mobility
performance" that will
introduce the concepts
of " The Wonders of Living
and Moving Freely" and
" The New Relationship
between People and
Vehicles." A large screen
will surround the audience
and actors.

Five elements of Toyota Group' s

vision for a future society

Meet the entertainers

The Toyota Group exhibit will propose a world in which

everyone can enjoy the benefits of mobility and in which
people, nature and the earth can live together in harmony. Five
elements go into this vision, as presented at the Exhibition.

Toyota Partner Robots

play trumpet, tuba, horn
and drums, demonstrating
remarkable dexterity with
their fi nely articulated
robotic hands, fi ngers
and lips. The DJ robot
Music playing robots
will carry on a dialogue with the emcee.

Natural-Cycle Earth Society*

The main pavilion building will be
constructed and operated to reuse,
recycle and make use of renewable
forms of energy and materials.

Innovative Power Sources

Fuel cell hybrid buses (FCHV-BUS)
represent the hydrogen society of
tomorrow.

Optimum Mobility
Single passenger i-unit concept
vehicles and the IMTS nextgeneration transportation represent
a society in which various forms
of mobility are wisely selected
and used to meet individual' s
transportation needs.

Harmony with Society

The i-unit and robot performance will represent a society free of
traffic accidents and traffic jams, and in which the elderly and
those with disabilities can achieve independent mobility.

Meeting the Needs oI Individuals

The i-unit and robot performance will also showcase the
possibilities offered by future technologies and vehicles to
respond to individuals' wishes to move freely.
* Natural-Cycle Earth Society: A society proactively utilizing renewable
energies and materials in line with the earth' s natural mechanism for
renewal, in addition to reusing and recycling whenever possible.

Music Playing robots and DJ robot

i-foot robot
This mountable walking robot wilt offer
three-dimensional mobility, including the
ability to navigate staircases. The ability
to mount and dismount comfortably was
of primary consideration in the design of
the bird-like legs, which bend toward the
rear. The wrap-around egg-shaped design
of the i-foot imparts feelings of safety and
i-foot
reliability, expressing our dream of future
three-dimensional mobility. A joystick is used for navigation.

i-unit - ultra-compact personal mobility

The i-unit is a form of personal mobility that
seeks to attain a greater balance of meeting
individuals' wishes to enjoy freedom
of movement, harmony with society,
and harmony with our planet' s natural
environment. It can shift between an upright
low-speed mode and a reclining highspeed mode, and even perform on-the-spot
turns. Other features include drive-by-wire
i-unit
technology and a personalized recognition
system for customized information, music and body color to match
individual preferences.

EXPO 2005 AICHI, JAPAN, the first World Exposition of the 21st Century, will be held in Japan's Aichi Prefecture from March 25, 2005 for 185 days.
