The NetEngine40E series universal service router (hereinafter referred to as the NE40E) is a
high-end network product provided by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as
Huawei). NE40Es are usually deployed at the edges of IP backbone networks, IP metropolitan
area networks (MANs), and other large-scale IP networks. The NE40E and the NE5000E and
NE80E core routers jointly provide a complete and layered IP network solution.
Based on distributed hardware forwarding and non-blocking switching technologies, the NE40E
features the line-speed forwarding capability, comprehensive Quality of Service (QoS) mechanism,
great service-processing capability and excellent scalability. Based on the scalable 400G platform,
the NE40E supports the smooth expansion from 40 Gbit/s per slot to 400 Gbit/s per slot and is
compatible with all line cards that are currently in use, thus protecting customers' investment to
the greatest extent. The NE40E is powerful in service access and convergence and can be flexibly
configured with various features such as L2VPN, L3VPN, multicast, multicast VPN, MPLS TE,
and QoS to guarantee the reliability of carrier-class service transmission. In addition, the NE40E
supports IPv6 as well as the smooth transition from IPv4 to IPv6. Thus, the NE40E can be flexibly
deployed at the edge or core of IP or MPLS networks, which simplifies the network structure.
With the provision of various types of services and reliable service quality, the NE40E functions
as an important driving force for the IP or MPLS bearer network to be more broadband, secure,
intelligent, and service-oriented.
The NE40E series products include the NE40E-X16, NE40E-X8, NE40E-X3, and NE40E-8,
satisfying the different requirements of the networks of various scales.

Product Highlights
Advanced 400G platform
The chassis of the NE40E is based on a 400G platform, which is designed to save energy. Each
slot has a forwarding capacity of 400 Gbit/s, and the bandwidth of each slot can be smoothly
expanded from 40 Gbit/s to 400 Gbit/s, thus satisfying the requirements for the increase in
bandwidth in the following three to five years. Based on the VRP, the NE40E is compatible with
all the line cards used on the network, protecting customers' investment to the greatest extent by
making full use of the existing components. The whole device is compact in design with a high
density of interfaces. The interface density can reach 64 x 10G for a single NE40E and 132 x 10G
for a single cabinet which greatly saves space.
Green design
The NE40E adopts a green design to save energy and reduce emission, which makes it more
environment-friendly. With the industry-leading cooling and energy-saving system (including the
advanced airing channel, optimal heat dissipation, intelligent fans, and distributed power supply
for different areas), the NE40E can automatically sense and adjust temperatures, which improves
the utilization of the power supply and makes the NE40E outstanding in terms of energy saving.
Compared with the like products, the NE40E consumes 10% less power per 10GE interface.
Rich services
The NE40E provides various features supporting and powerful service processing capabilities. It
can satisfy the service requirements of IP or MPLS bearer networks and backbone networks.
With powerful routing capabilities, the NE40E supports the excessively large routing table and
provides RIP, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP4, and multicast routing protocols that support plain text
authentication and encrypted text authentication. In a word, The NE40E features fast convergence
and ensure the stability and security in complicated routing environments.
The NE40E supports VPN services. The L2VPN, L3VPN, and MVPN can be deployed according
to the networking requirements. The VPN can work over Traffic Engineering (TE) and supports
multiple access, including ATM, IMA E1, TDM, POS, and Ethernet. The NE40E supports flexible
QinQ, and provides DHCP and IPoE. Both traditional access services and burgeoning services are
supported by the NE40E. Thus, it can satisfy the requirements raised by the merging of multiple
services.
The NE40E is powerful in expandable multicast. It supports a lot of IPv4/IPv6 multicast protocols
such as PIM-SM, PIM-DM, PIM-SSM, MLDv1/v2, Embedded RP, IGMPv3, multicast Call
Admission capabilities Control (multicast CAC), and IGMP snooping. The NE40E can flexibly
carry video services such as IPTV and satisfy the requirements of multicast services of various
scales.
Perfect QoS Mechanism
The NE40E provides good QoS. With the advanced queue scheduling algorithm and congestion
control algorithm, the NE40E can carry out multi-level accurate scheduling for data flows,

therefore satisfying the requirements of quality for the services of different users and types.
The NE40E provides a perfect QoS scheduling mechanism. It supports the following functions to
ensure the QoS:
Five-level HQoS scheduling for the access side to satisfy the service requirements of
access users at different levels in a differentiated and diversified manner
MPLS HQoS for the network to support the QoS deployment on the network side and
the QoS for MPLS VPN, VLL, and PWE3.
TE-based MPLS DS-TE to combine the use of MPLS TE and the DiffServ model, 8
Class Type(CT) and two bandwidth restriction models: Maximum Allocation Model
(MAM) and Russian Dolls Model (RDM)
With the perfect QoS mechanism, the NE40E excels in the allocation of network resources. It
provides a network-oriented solution to service quality, meeting the requirements of carrier-class
services of commercial networks.
All-round reliability solution
Providing reliability protection at different levels, including device-based, network-based, and
service-based, the NE40E can cope with any failures in the IP or MPLS carrier network and
ensure service recovery.
Device-based reliability: The NE40E provides redundancy backup for key components
that support hot swapping and hot backup. The NE40E also makes use of the
technologies such as ISSU, Non-Stop Routing (NSR), and Non-Stop Forwarding (NSF)
to recover services and guard against service interruption.
Network-based reliability: The NE40E supports the technologies such as
IP/LDP/VPN/TE fast rerouting/Hot-Standby, fast convergence of IGP, BGP, and
multicast route, Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), Rapid Ring Protection
Protocol (RRPP), Trunk link backup, BFD, MPLS/Ethernet OAM, routing
protocol/port/VLAN Damping to ensure the stability of the whole network. The NE40E
provides the end-to-end protection solutions that can ensure the service recovery within
200 ms when a failure happens.
Service-based reliability: The VPN FRR, E-VRRP, VLL FRR, Ethernet OAM, PW
redundancy, E-Trunk, and E-APS technologies provided by the NE40E can be applied to
the L3VPN and L2VPN networking solutions. They can provide the service backup to
ensure the stable and reliable services and guard against service interruption.
The NE40E provides a solution that can meet the requirements of the different layers of the whole
network, completely ensuring the carrier-class reliability requirements. It constitutes the
cornerstone of the carrier-class service implementation and reaches the system availability of
99.999%.
