Plot[edit]
Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) is a junior artist in the 1970s Hindi film i
ndustry, in love with film star Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone). One evening, Om
views the premiere of Shanti's film Dreamy Girl, posing as Manoj Kumar. Later t
hat night, Om becomes drunk and describes his vision of himself as a famous, wea
lthy film star wining the filmfare award for best actor to his friend Pappu (Shr
eyas Talpade) and some local children. At the shooting of a later film, Om rescu
es Shanti from a fire scene where of the fire has escaped control, and they beco
me friends. One day, after following Shanti, he overhears her and producer Mukes
h Mehra's (Arjun Rampal) conversation, that Mukesh and Shanti have married in se
cret and Shanti is pregnant and expects a traditional wedding. Mukesh pretends t
o be happy with the news, and invites Shanti at the set of their soon-to-be-made
film Om Shanti Om. Mukesh promises to cancel the film, reveal their marriage to
the public, and have a grand wedding on the set; but instead traps Shanti on th
e set and sets it on fire to prevent his financial loss and downfall of his care
er.
Om, who happens to be at the same location that night, attempts to rescue Shanti
, but is attacked by Mukesh's guards, and later thrown from the building by an e
xplosion. Outside, Om is hit by a car owned by Rajesh Kapoor (Javed Sheikh), a w
ell-known actor taking his wife Lovely to the hospital to give birth. At the hos
pital Om succumbs to his injuries, while Lovely gives birth to a son, also named
Om, who in adulthood becomes a popular movie star and a lookalike of Om, nickna
med 'O.K.', and lives the luxurious life imagined by Om Prakash, but experiences
pyrophobia and subconsciously inherits Om Prakash's memories. In acceptance of
an award, O.K. unexpectedly delivers Om Prakash's drunken speech to the assembly
. Pappu hears this on television. At a celebration of his award, O.K. is introdu
ced by his father to Mukesh Mehra, and thereupon completely recovers Om Prakash'
s memories. He later reunites with Om's mother Bela (Kirron Kher) and Pappu and
conspires to avenge Shanti's death by making Mukesh confess his crime. To that e
nd, O.K. convinces Mukesh to restart Om Shanti Om, while scheming to convince Mu
kesh that Shanti is a ghost haunting himself. To impersonate Shanti, O.K. finds
Sandhya, a.k.a. Sandy, a doppelganger of Shanti. Throughout the film's shooting,
O.K. and his friends arrange incidents to remind Mukesh of his crime. During th
e music launch of the film, O.K. taunts Mukesh by revealing, through a song, the
extent to which he knows the story of Shanti's death. Seeing Sandy bleed of a s
cratch, Mukesh confirms that she is not Shanti's ghost. Thereafter O.K. and Muke
sh confront each other with their knowledge of each other's actions. During the
quarrel, an apparently-genuine ghost of Shanti reveals that Mukesh, after the fi
re ceased to burn, buried her alive below the set's chandelier. Mukesh attempts
to shoot the ghost, shocked by the extent to which she knows about the murder, b
ut Mukesh and O.K. fight, which results in yet another fire; and the chandelier
falls on Mukesh, killing him instantly. Pappu and Sandy join O.K. O.K. is shocke
d that he saw the same person and realizes it is Shanti's ghost. The film ends w
ith Shanti's ghost leaving the scene and disappears in the light.

Production[edit]
The film is based on reincarnation. It is inspired by Rishi Kapoor's 1980 hind f
ilm Karz and borrows many elements from it, including the title which is named a
fter one of that film's songs. In the beginning of Om Shanti Om, Rishi Kapoor ca
n be seen dancing to the original song. Shooting of the film began in January 20
07 at various locations in India. The film was released on 9 November 2007.
Om Shanti Om created a record of sorts by going in for an unheard of 2000 prints
(worldwide) release. This was the highest number of prints (including digital)
for any Indian movie at the time of its release.[4] Om Shanti Om set another rec
ord for registered pre-advance booking of 18,000 tickets in a chain of theatres
in Delhi a few days before the advance booking was to start.[8]
Red Chillies Entertainment had reportedly sold the world rights for the film to
Eros International for an amount between Rs. 720750 million.[9][10] Baba Films, p
roduction and distribution company, had offered a record Rs. 110 million for the
rights to the Mumbai Circuit, easily surpassing the highest amount ever paid fo
r the territory.[9]
A book, titled The Making of Om Shanti Om written by Mushtaq Sheikh, was release
d after the release of the film. The book gives an insight into the production a
nd happenings behind the camera of the film.[11][12]
Home video release[edit]

escreen format on February 2008 . The second disc included a trivia game, bloope
rs, premiers, deleted scenes, interviews, trailers and teasers and the making of

Reception[edit]
Reviews[edit]
Om Shanti Om received mostly positive reviews from critics. Taran Adarsh from Bo
llywood hungama gave the movie a 4 out 5 star rating stating "This Diwali, have
a blast! (...) At the box-office, the film will set new records in days to come
and has the power to emerge one of the biggest hits of SRK's career."[21] Hindus
tan Times's Khalid Mohamed gave the film 4/5 saying that the film is "A must for
masala movie lovers.."[22] Tajpal Rathore of BBC gave it 4 out of 5 stars and s
tated, "Both a homage to and parody of Hindi Films, this cinematic feast deliver
ed straight from the heart of the film industry will have you glued to your seat
s till the end."[23] Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India gave 3.5 of 5 stars stat
ing the film is a total paisa vasool and a true tribute to Karz(1980).[24] Raja
Sen of Rediff.com gave 3 and half stars and stated, "Om Shanti Om is an exultant
, heady, joyous film reveling in Hindi Films, and as at most parties where the b
ubbly flows free, there is much silly giggling and tremendous immaturity. You'd
do well to breathe in the filmi fumes, lift your own collar-tips upwards, and le
ave sense out of the equation. More cameos are written in than dialogues, so sit
back and play spot-the-celeb. Or watch the Khan have a blast on screen."[25] Ma
rk Medley of National Post gave 3 stars and stated, "The film is a mess for all
the right reasons; elements of comedy, drama, romance, action and the supernatur
al are packed in. But really, the plot is just a vehicle to get from one song-an
d-dance number to the next."[26] AOL India'sNoyon Jyoti Parasara gave the movie
3 out of 5 stars stating, "The movie consists of all the elements that are essen
tially called the 'navratnas' of Indian cinema from joy to grief to romance to rev
enge. And she mixes these well to cook up a potboiler, which is sure to be a run
away hit."[27] Rajeev Mansad ofCNN-IBN give Om Shanti Om 3 out of 5 stars, stat
ed "A special mention must be made for the film's excellent dialogue which so cl
everly incorporates Hindi Moves's oldest clichs into these characters' everyday p
arlance."[28] Sudish Kamnath of The Hindu stated, "Om Shanti Om is a light-heart
ed tribute to Hindi cinema the way we know it and love it, in spite of its flaws
, improvisation and implausibility. [...]That apart, the movie is a hell of a pa
rty, a bits-and-pieces blockbuster strung together with a series of laughs, song
s and dances. SRK shows us why he's the rock star of our times."[29] SearchIndia
.com gave the movie the thumbs-down stating that "A dispiritingly commonplace th
eme of reincarnation packaged in a disjointed, tracing-paper-thin plot with ho-h
um performances by the lead actors renders a mediocre movie that only addled fan
s of Hindi Film superstar Shahrukh Khan would love."[30]
Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave Om Shanti Om a rating of 83%, based upon
6 reviews (5 fresh and 1 rotten).[31]
Controversy[edit]
Manoj Kumar's complaints[edit]
Om Shanti Om landed into controversy with veteran actor Manoj Kumar, for showing
his body double in a bad taste. Offended by the sequence, Kumar planned to sue
the makers of Om Shanti Om.[32] Kumar added, "Are the Mumbai police so stupid th
at they can't recognise Manoj Kumar and lathicharge him in the '70s when he was
a star?.[33] Kumar also alleged that Shahrukh Khan is communal.[34] Later, in a p
ress conference, Shahrukh Khan and director Farah Khan accepted their mistake an
d apologised for the matter.[35] Farah Khan even offered to cut the scene which
Manoj Kumar felt was hurtful, but Kumar refused on grounds that, as Farah had st
ated, "I [Farah Khan] am like his daughter. He said, 'Betiyaan maafi nahi maangt
i' (Daughters don't ask for forgiveness). I told him that he could've called me
and scolded me."[35] Later, Kumar said that though this incident was hurtful to
him, he wishes to forgive, ignore, and move on, saying that he prefers to "see R
am in everyone and ignore the Ravana."[36]
In 2008, before the film's television premiere on Sony TV, Manoj Kumar filed for
a stay on the television release, at civil court in Mumbai. On 8 August 2008, h
e won permanent injunction on the scenes in Om Shanti Om that lampooned him. The
court ordered the producers and Sony Entertainment Television, to edit the Mano
j Kumar look-alike scenes before showing the film on the channel on 10 August 20
08. It also ordered that the film could not be shown in any mediaTV, DVD or Inter
netwithout the scene being deleted.[37][38]
Alleged plagiarism[edit]
On 7 August 2008, before its television release, scriptwriter Ajay Monga, moved
the Bombay High Court alleging that the basic storyline of the film was lifted f
rom a film script he had emailed to Shah Rukh Khan in 2006. According to the pet
ition, "Monga, along with one more writer Hemant Hegde, had registered the scrip
t with the Cine Writers Association (CWA) in September 2005. In January 2008, Ci
ne Writers Association (CWA) rejected Monga's appeal at a special Executive Comm
ittee meeting. Thereafter, he approached the court to stay the film's screening
on television. Though, on 6 August the court rejected Monga's plea for seeking a
stay on the television telecast, it directed all the respondents including Shah
rukh Khan, Farah Khan, Red Chillies Entertainment,Gauri Khan (director Red Chill
ies) and film's co-writer Mushtaq Sheikh, to file their say by the next hearing
on 29 September 2008.[39][40][41]
In November 2008, the Film Writers' association sent a communication to Red Chil
lies and Ajay Monga that it had found similarities in Om Shanti Om and Monga's s
cript. The similarities were more than mere coincidences according to Sooni Tara
porewala who chaired a special committee that has investigated the case on behal
f of the Film Writers' association.[42]
Another allegation of plagiarism came from Rinki Bhattacharya, daughter of late
Bimal Roy, who directed Madhumati. She threatened legal action againstRed Chilli
es Entertainment and the producer-director of Om Shanti Om, as she felt that the
film's second half was similar to Madhumati, also a rebirth saga.[39][40]
