Should We Pray To Jesus?

Prayer is communication between God and believers. We are only to pray to God and
thus throughout Scripture we repeatedly find that individuals frequently called “upon
the name of the LORD” in prayer.

Let us examine the Scriptures closer and see how God is prayed to:

 To God--- Psalm 116:4-Then I called upon the name of the LORD (YHWH): “O
LORD, I beseech You, save my life!”

 To Jesus--- 1 Corinthians 1:1-2, “Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will
of God, and Sosthenes our brother, To the church of God which is at Corinth, to
those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in
every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,…”

Believers in every place are instructed by the Apostle Paul, to call upon the name of
Jesus Christ.

 To Jesus--- Romans 10:9-13, this particular passage refers to Jesus Christ; let’s
examine it closely to see the original intent the Apostle Paul, the author of this letter.

First, in verses 9-10, Paul writes that if you call upon the name of Jesus Christ then you
will be saved.

Next, in verse 11, he then quotes Isaiah 28:16 which refers to Jesus in the previous verse,
“For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed”.

Then, in verse 12, Paul writes “the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for
all who call on Him”. Paul is still referring to Jesus in the previous verses.

Finally, in verse 13, to put a stamp on the previous verse, Paul quotes from Joel 2:32 “for
Whoever will call upon the name of the LORD will be saved”. The word “LORD” that
Joel used in this verse is “YHWH” or “Jehovah”. The conclusion of this passage is that
Jesus is being referred to as the Jehovah of the Old Testament. Jesus is able to be
prayed to and called upon for salvation.

A different approach...

To God--- Luke 23:46, “And Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your
hands I commit My Spirit”.

To Jesus--- Acts 7:59, “They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord, “Lord
Jesus, receive my spirit!”.

A quote from Psalm 31:5, “Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me,
O LORD, God of truth”. King David wrote that this was said to the “LORD the God of
truth”. Jesus prayed this same prayer to God the Father. Stephen likely knew this
prayer was from Psalms (as he quoted it exactly), and he knew it was written by King
David and that it was to the LORD God (YHWH or Jehovah). Yet, in Stephens hour of
death, when he was full with the Holy Spirit (7:55), to whom did he pray? “Lord Jesus,
receive my spirit!”

These passages teach that Jesus Christ is Almighty God. He can be prayed to as did the
Apostles and believers of the early church. They prayed to Jesus Christ and I submit
that every individual do the same. Jesus loves you and desires a personal relationship
with you; you can talk to Him…
