Final exam review Math 112

There will be an in-class, closed-book nal exam 14 pm on Thursday, May 15, in

Eliot 314. In general, the exam will cover sections 67, 1012, 1618, 3234 in the text
and the extensions to the complex numbers we talked about in class. The following is a
precise description of what you are expexted to know for the exam.
1. What is a relation on a set (6.7, p. 53)? An equivalence relation (6.9, p. 53)?
2. Please know the meaning of the following terms used when talking about functions:
domain, codomain, image (range), surjective, injective, bijective, composition, inverse.
These terms are all described in chapter 7.
3. There will be an induction proof of some sort on the exam (chapter 10).
4. Be able to dene a eld (chapter 11 or, preferably, the handout from class, available
on our website).
5. Be able to dene the following terms associated with sets of real numbers: upper bound,
lower bound, sup, inf (chapter 12).
6. What is the completeness axiom for the real numbers (chapter 12)?
7. What does it mean for a sequence of real or complex numbers to converge (16.2, p.
158)? To diverge?
8. Be able to prove that every convergent sequence is bounded (16.13, p. 162).
9. Be able prove that if (s
n
) and (t
n
) are convergent sequences, then so is (s
n
+ t
n
), and
lim(s
n
+ t
n
) = lims
n
+ limt
n
(17.1, p. 166).
10. What is a monotone sequence (18.1, p. 174)?
11. State and prove the monotone convergence theorem (18.3, p. 175).
12. What is a Cauchy sequence and why would anyone be interested in this notion given
that we already have a denition of convergence of a sequence (18.9, p. 177)?
13. What is an innite series (the technical denition on p. 295)?
14. What does

n=0
a
n
= mean (p. 295)?
15. Know the tests for convergence of series and how to use them. A summary of the tests
and solutions to the group quizzes on sequences and series appears at our website.
1
16. What does it mean for a series to be absolutely convergent (33.4, p. 303)? Why is this
notion useful in studying complex series?
17. Know the two big theorems about powers series: the rst having to do with the ex-
istence of a radius of convergence, and the second having to do with dierentiation.
There is a handout with the statements of these theorems at our website.
18. Be able to use the ratio test to nd the radius of convergence of a power series (as you
did in homework problems). Recall that the ratio test for power series and the ratio
test for innite series are related but dierent.
19. What are the denitions for exp(z), sin(z), and cos(z) for z C? Prove that exp(iz) =
cos(z) + i sin(z).
20. Know how to state the denition of continuity, to state the extreme value theorem, and
to state the intermediate value theorem.
21. Let S be a set and f : S S. What is a xed point of f?
22. If f : R R or f : C C, what is the Julia set, J(f)?
23. What is the Mandelbrot set?
