Side-by-Side Ministry
October, 2014

From Pastor Chris Masquerading

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. Romans 7:21
What is evil? Sometimes it is obviouslike on TV news when we see acts of violence against the innocent, when we see the
lust for power that steps on everyone in its path, or on the internet when we see child pornography or teens enslaved for sex.
But sometimes evil masquerades as good. Even though we want to do what is good, the things that pull us away from God
and Gods will for our lives are close at hand, all around us and in us.
Evil is a living reality, a power moving in this world. Unmasking it and naming it is important. St. Ignatius named it
enemy. Ignoring it, thinking it doesnt exist, thinking it has no power in our lives is what it wants. It doesnt want to be
seen for what it is. It tempts us by looking good, by enticing us to desire what it offers, by befriending us...and then it catch-
es us off guard with its destructive power.
We all have names for it. I have learned to call it by many names, Alcohol, prescription pain medications, marijuana, co-
caine, heroine, gambling, are a few of its names. I have seen so many who start out with no intention of addiction, just
wanting to numb the pain or escape reality for awhile. The enemy masquerades as something that looks good at the moment,
but then it becomes our god, more important than God, family, work, relationships, even life.
Even if you believe you have, so far, escaped addiction, you may want to think again. Evil masquerades in the best of inten-
tions. It looks good to take advantage of every good opportunity lots of sports participation, extra hours at work, taking
college classes in high school, lots of community service events, making more profit in your business. But what if your want-
ing to do good takes you away from the will of God for your life? It seems like almost everyone I see, young and old alike, is
exhausted by the pace. Have we become addicted, as a society, to a lifestyle that looks good, but keeps us so busy we run out
of time have time and energy for Spiritual health, for just being in a deep and loving relationship with God?
I am guilty, and as your Pastor, you would think I would see the enemy masquerading behind my busyness. Like the Apostle
Paul, it seems that, mostly, we all want to do what is good. Just like the Apostle Paul, we continue to be fooled by the evil
that lies close at hand. So where is the hope? The Apostle Paul writes,
24
Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this
body of death?
25
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:24-25) We have one who wears no mask, but reveals
the face of God. Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6) Lord, may we come to You first, trust in You
first, follow You first, and fall on Your amazing and beautiful grace. Amen.
