Forgivenesscomesinmanyforms:
AskingtheLordforforgivenessisthefirststeptoforgiveness.
Forgivingothersforwhatwrongswefeeltheymayhavedonetous.Wemustforgiveothers
whohavewrongedusinordertogetforgivenessforourwrongs.
ForgiveourselvesforwrongswehavedonetoGod,othersandourselves.
Peopleaskforforgivenessfordifferentreasons:
Fear
Guilt
Wanttomakeupforsomethingtheydid
Wanttoimpresssomeone
Peopleoftendonotforgiveothersbecausetheyareupsetorangry.

ManyPeopleaskforforgivenessonlywhentheyarescaredorafraid
Interestinglyenough,thefirsttimeforgivenessismentionedintheBiblewaswhensomeonewas
scaredorafraid.
WhenJoseph(whohadbeensoldintoslaverybyhisownbrothersandhadbeenestrangedfrom
hisfamily)wasapproachedbyhisestrangedbrother'saskingforforgivenessbecausethey
thoughtBenjaminhadstolenfromJoseph.Thisisalsothefirsttimeforgivenessisaskedforon
behalfofsomeoneelse.
SoshallyesayuntoJoseph,ForgiveIpraytheenow,thetrespassofthebrethren,and
theirsinfortheydiduntotheeevil:andnow,wepraythee,forgivethetrespassofthe
servantsoftheGodofthyfather.AndJosephweptwhentheyspakeuntohim.Genesis

ThePharaohofEgyptaskedforgivenessbecausehewasscared

Shortlyaftertheplagueoflocusts,thePharaohinEgypthadfearinhisheartsohecalledMoses
andAarontellingthemthathehadsinnedagainsttheirGodandwasinneedofforgiveness
becausehe,ThePharaohofEgypt,wasafraidofGod.
Nowthereforeforgive,Ipraythee,mysinonlythisonce,andentreattheLordyourGod,
thathemaytakeawayfrommethisdeathonly.Exodus10:17

MosesbeggedGodtoforgivehispeoplebecausehewasscared,Moseswasafraidof
whattheLordwoulddotothepeople,becausetheyhadmadefalsegodsoutofgold,whilehe
wasaway,gettingtheTenCommandmentsfromGod.HeaskstheLordtoforgivethepeopleor
elsetakehisnameoutofthebookoflife.Ofcourse,theLordrefusedtotakeMosesnamefrom
thebookbutmadeitclearthatthepeoplewhohadmadeandworshipedthefalsegods'name,
would,infact,beremovedfromthebook.TheLordheldthemaccountablefortheirownsins
againstHimnotMoses.
Yetnow,ifthouwiltforgivetheirsinandifnot,blotme,Ipraythee,outofthybookwhich
thouhastwritten.Exodus32:32

AndtheLordsaiduntoMoses,Whosoeverhathsinnedagainstme,himwillIblotoutof
mybook.Exodus32:33

KingDavidprayedforforgivenessbecauseofhissinandhewasafraid
KingDavidwasafraidtheLordhadturnedHisbackonhimbecauseofhisgreatsinwhenhe
sentBathsheba'shusbandtodieinbattleonthefrontline.HewantedtomarryherbecauseKing
Davidlovedherandwantedherforhimself.ManyofthePsalmswerewrittenforthisvery
reason.

Peopleoftendonotforgiveother'sbecausetheyareupsetorangry

TheLordwasangrywiththepeopleofJudahbutHedecidedtogivethemachancetoredeem
themselves.JeremiahtriedtohelpthepeopleandhespoketothepeopleofJudah,tellingthem
whattheLordtoldhimtosay.HetriedtoturnGod'swrathawayfromthem,hopingthatthey
wouldturnawayfromtheirfalseGod's.JudahwassupposedtobeGod'speople,yettheyturned
theirbacksonHimbyworshipingothergods.ThepeopleofJudahdidnotlistentoJeremiah.
Theydecidedtodevisedevicesagainsthimbytalkingbadabouthim,notlisteningtowhat
Jeremiahhadtosayand,evenplottedtokillhim.JeremiahfoundthisoutandtalkedtotheLord
aboutit.Hewasveryupsetthatthepeoplehadturnedonhim.Whilehewasspeakingtothe
LordheaskedHimnottoforgivethepeopleoftheirsinsbecausehewasangryto.
Yet,Lord,thouknowestalltheircounselagainstmetoslayme:forgivenottheiriniquity,
neitherblotouttheirsinfromthysight,butletthembeoverthrownbeforetheedealthus
withtheminthetimeofthineanger.Jeremiah18:23

KingSolomonprayedforforgivenessforeveryonewhocametoprayandask
forgivenessinthetemple
KingSolomonwasconsideredoneofthewisestKing'sintheworld.HelovedtheLordsomuch
hemadeaveryexpensivetempletoworshiptheLord,inagreatdramaticefforttohonorHim.
After,buildingitanddedicatingaplaceforarkoftheLord'scovenant,KingSolomonprayedto
theLord,infrontofthecongregationofpeopleaskingtheLordtoforgivepeoplewhocome
prayingandaskingforforgiveness.
Andhearkenthoutothesupplicationofthyservant,andofthypeopleIsrael,whenthey
shallpraytowardthisplace:andhearthouinheaventhydwellingplace:andwhenthou
hearest,forgive.IKings8:30

TheLordclearlystatesHewillforgiveiniquityandrememberitnomore
TheLordisourexampletofollow.WhentheLordforgivessomeonetheissueisresolvedandhe
willnotrememberthesinanymore.Intheendoftheworld,everyonewillknowtheLordsothere
won'tbeanyneedforteachers.
Andtheyshallteachnomoreeverymanhisneighbor.andeverymanhisbrother.
saying,KnowtheLord:fortheyshallallknowme,fromtheleastofthemuntothe
greatestofthem,saiththeLord:forIwillforgivetheiriniquity,andIwillremembertheirsin
