Exercise 4
Read the text below and write questions for the answers
Eleven year old Doris tells us what it's like growing up in Ghana.
My name is Doris and I live in a small village called Bonfa in Ghana. Like most adults in the
village, my parents are cocoa farmers who sell their cocoa to Kuapa Kokoo. This means that they
get a fair wage for their hard work and their chocolate and have some money left over to send their
children to school.
At my school it's very important to be able to speak English and we spend a lot of time learning it.
My day starts at 5 am. My first job of the day is to go to the well in the village and fetch buckets of
water for my family to wash. I have to collect enough water for my parents, my two brothers and
my sister.
School starts at 7am and out of the nine subjects I study, Maths and English are my favourites. I try
to work very hard, because I want to become a doctor when I'm older, so that I can help the people
in my community to be healthy.
During the harvest period I spend some of my time helping my parents harvest the cocoa. My Mum
and Dad scoop the cocoa beans onto banana leaves and then leave them there to ferment for a week.
After that they move them onto mats in the sun, where the beans dry out and start to taste like
chocolate.
