The Big Barbecue
Every year 10,000 workers from all over the world
are invited to a ranch near San J ose. The invitation
says 'Dress casually, have fun!' Some office workers
from the city go there by bus, workers in other
countries fly there. But nobody wants to miss the
party - it's Stefan Fellow's summer staff party.
Stefan began his software company in 1986 in his
father's garage in San J ose. Each year Stefan had a '<
party for his: employees - first one or two, then ten
or twenty, now over ten thousand. As the company
got bigger, so dM the party - everyone comes to
enjoy themselves, from top managers to the office
cleaner. It gives Stefan the chance to socialize with
all his employees and discuss their problems. And
where is Stefan during the party - where he started
in 1986 - at the barbecue cooking for his guests
and chatting.

Lifestyle: Ex-pat style
1 Are you thinking of living and working abroad? Do you think you could
live in another culture? A survey of people living and working in the Middle
East asked the same question, with surprising results. Most people living
and working abroad (ex-pats) don't see any difference in the way they work.
Many people get used to cultural differences like working on Sunday and
different ways of working.
2 Many people enjoy working with their colleagues but most people
hardly ever see them after work to socialize with them. Instead they usually
meet people from their own country after work and spend time with them.
3 Is this because ex-pats do not learn the local language? Many people
take language lessons every week, but they don't usually speak the
language outside class and at work they always speak English.
4 Do they miss their own countries? Most people feel homesick
sometimes, but they said this gets better with time.

Are women
better bosses?
Its an.old question - who manages people better, a female
manager or a male manager? We asked two people with
male and female managers for their experiences.
My mgin boss is a man
but the company director I
is|f woman, so I have
''experience of both ways of
management - and there is
[ certainly a difference. My
boss - Paulo- is more traditional. He likes to make all
the decisions. Our company director - Janet - is different.
She is friendlier and thinks about her employees more
than Paulo. I think Janet is a better manager and women
are better managers.
i
H I
You know, I have two bosses
- one man and one woman.
Our woman manager is
in New York, the man is
in London. We see our
London manager more
often than our American manager. When I think about
them, pur woman manager is easier to talk to and is more
interested in her colleagues - what they do, their families,
etc. Our male boss is direct - he likes to find answers to
problems - byt he can make people angry more quickly
than our London boss. In my opirtionlwomen managers
are better than men.

Food for thought
When you're buying your food, you can't always ask
about what's in it - in the supermarket, for example,
you can't usually ask 'How many calories* are there in
this pizza?' Which food is good for you and which food
is bad is sometimes easy to decide. Chocolate -bad
for you; fruit and vegetables- good. But knowing what
is good and bad isn't always so easy. For example,
olives are low in fat but are often high in salt.
For tins of food like soup or drinks like cola, reading
food labels isn't always so simple. To help people
stay healthy, food in the UK is labelled like a traffic
light: green =good for you; yellow =OK to eat this
sometimes; red = don't eat this food often. A red traffic
light will show you that the food has a lot of sugar,
salt or fat in it. Traffic light colours on food help you to
control what you are eating. So now you don't need to
read the labels or ask someone about food products -
you can see what is good for you quickly and easily.
* calorie =the amount of energy a particular food can
produce
Read the article again. Are these sentences true
(T) or false (F)?
1 It's easy to tell which foods are bad for you. CD

Watch out! How to stop
injuries at work
What's the main injury in the workplace? Believe it or not it's back
pain, wrist pain and neck pain from doing the same movements
again and again: typing/filing and lifting. Employees working in
an office at the computer all day can get backache and wrist pain.
They can develop problems with their eyes unless they take breaks
from their computer every fifteen minutes.
But managers can stop these injuries before they happen. It's
part of a manager's job to plan and it's a good idea for planning
to include health and safety. Office workers have to work with
some natural light and their computer screen should be about 50
centimetres away. They should sit straight with their feet on the
floor. It's possible for software in their computer to tell them when
to take a break and special keyboards can help prevent wrist ache.
Every manager must look around for where accidents can
happen. It's a good idea to try to stop injuries before they happen!

French industrial design company fFG is very

orders. The company started in a small factory
in Lyon making things for the kitchen to a much
better standard than the other companies.
J ean Michel, the director of the company is
also a designer and all IFGs products are of
excellent quality. IFG is now a multinational
company but it is still in the same factory - there
are too many products for the warehouse, and
there are a lot of machines, but IFG needs more.
Finally, the design team is getting bigger and
there are too many people in the design office.
And this is the problem - IFG is too successful.

3 IFD is a(n) local / national / international

Our memories get worse as we get older, this is clear.

Q Read the article again and complete the sentences.
Soon, people 1_____ need wallets to carry money -
we 2_______ use mobile phones to give money to other
people or to pay for things. But this 3 ___be free of
problems. Criminals4. try to take money from
people using this technology. And some people
5 _ _ _ _ _ _ always prefer to use real money.
Every day before we close the door to go to work,
people remember three things: their keys, their
mobile phone and their money. But is the day coming
when we wont need money any more? Will keys and ... ..............
mobiles be enough? People already use cards instead
of cash and many banks do not accept cheques any more. Today mobile phones are often used to pay for
things like car parking. But soon, new mobile phone technology will help us do more things with money
on our phones. We will be able to transfer money by touching two phones together, buy things in stores
or buy travel tickets.
But there will be problems. Often the first people to use new technologies are the first people the
criminals find. Mobile money crime, for example using someone elses bank account illegally, will rise
quickly, but then it will decrease as security gets better. People will be able to lock their mobile money
service when their phone gets lost or stolen.
This doesnt mean that money will not be used anymore, just that fewer people will use it. So when you
walk out of your house in future, you wont need to remember your cash any more..

Life's what you make it
It's easy to say bad things about working part time in
a fast food restaurant, but it depends on how you see
it and what you do. Believe me. I've had lots of part
time jobs. Some of them weren't good - I've worked
as a hospital porter, I've cleaned hotel rooms and I've
washed cars, but I have never looked back at my work
in a fast food restaurant and thought it was a negative
experience. In fact, I think that I learnt a lot from it. As
a student of management, I needed a job through
university so I went to work in a fast food restaurant.
Most of the other workers saw the job in a negative
way, but I didn't 1understood the reasons that made it
a successful business - quality, good service, good food.
I learnt how a successful business works and I learnt
about management. In a few weeks I was responsible
for training colleagues, counting the money, and
leading a team. I've found that many other successful
business people have worked in fast food places - the
key to success was to think positively and make things
work for you.

Kriszta's career break blog -12 October
It's my once in a lifetime opportunity - after seven
years working in the same accountancy company, I
was feeling really tired and wanted to quit. Then I
heard that some companies give paid sabbaticals
and some more offer unpaid leave so I asked my
boss. At first she didn't agree, when I said it would
help me work better when I got back, she said OK.
In two days' time I'm giving in my request for leave
and I'm planning to go at the end of the month.
But first, I'm spending next week with my calendar
planning where to go and what to do. The week
after next I'm buying what I need for the journey.
So what's the plan? I've always wanted to go to
South America and my friends, Francesca and Marta,
are in Sao Luis, Brazil. I'm flying to Rio first and then
staying with them for one or two weeks. While I'm
there, we're travelling down the Amazon River and
staying in Manaus 1,000 kilometres away - 1always
wanted to go into the Amazon. I'm travelling down
through Brazil to Porto Velho then Campo Grande
and after that going into Uruguay at the beginning
of next year where I'm working as a volunteer with
a charity for children. That's what I really want to do,
and I'm volunteering for the rest of the sabbatical.
But for now, I need to do some planning.
That's all for now, more tomorrow.

R: What about a new name?
H: I'm not sure about that.
R: How about 'The Electric Bookshop'?
H: I'm sorry, Robert. I don't think that's
a good idea. People won't know which
bookshop we are any more.

J - J ane, S =Sally
S: Hello?
J : Hi, Sally, it's J ane, I need some help.
S: Sure J ane, what is it?
J : You know I told you about my important
job interview today?
S: Yes.
J : Well, I'mhere outside the office for the
interview, but I've got a big problem.
S: Oh really? What is it?
J : They wanted me to bring my original
certificates from college. I took a taxi to
the company, but left my certificates in the
taxi. I've come to the interview without my
certificates.
S: Do you really need them?
J : Well, yes.
S: Don't worry - you can phone the taxi
company and get them back.
J : I tried that but the difficulty is that they
don't know who the driver was.
S: Oh, I'm sorry about that. Can you send
them in later?
J : The problem is that the job is for a very
organized person. It's not going to look good
at all.
S: I see. How can I help you?
J : Can you find the copies of my certificates
and bring them over?
S: For sure. Don't worry.
J : That's really great. I was really nervous.
S: Well don't be. Everything's going to be
OK. I'll be there in half an hour.
J : Half an hour!

1 Hello J ohn, it's Amy Curtis. Sorry I haven't
called you for a long time. I've been very
busy at work. Anyway, do you want to meet
next week?
2 Hi J ohn, it's Amy. I'm coming to meet you
but I've just missed the bus. I've called a taxL
so I'll be there in five minutes. See you soon.
3 J ohn, J ohn, it's Amy. I've just arrived but I
can't see you. I'll call again in a few minutes.
4 Hi J ohn - me again. I've just looked again
in the restaurant but you're not there. I'll wait
for another ten minutes and call again.
5 J ohn. I've waited for twenty minutes
now and I'm going home. Thanks for a great
evening!

A: Hello, Car Rescue. What's your Car
Rescue number?
G: Car Rescue number, wait a minute - it's
81324 [some interference] 5.
A: Sorry, what did you say?
G: My Car Rescue number is 813245.
A: Can I read that back to you?
G: OK.
A: So that's 813245.
G: That's correct
A: And your name is?
G: Rossi. Giacomo Rossi.
A: Erm, can you speak a little more slowly
please? I'm sorry, but the line is very bad.
G: Sure. My name is Giacomo Rossi.
A: What's the problem Mr Rossi?
G: I've broken down.
A: Where have you broken down, sir?
G: I've broken down about 20 miles north of
Coventry.
A: 20 miles north of Coventry. Is that right?
G: Yes, that's right.
A: And what's happened?
G: I've crashed!
A: Did you say you've crashed?
G: Yes, I've crashed into a tree.
A: Have you been hurt?
G: No, I haven't been hurt, but my car has.
A: Sorry, can you repeat that?
G: I've crashed into a tree.
A: OK, sir. Please wait in your car - we will
be with you soon.
G: Oh, good. Thanks very much.

A =Alya, T =Teresa
Conversation 1
A: Teresa, I need to send this parcel of
books to J akarta as soon as possible.
T: OK - how about first class post? That
should only be about a week.
A: This is important-the exhibition is next
Wednesday. It needs to be there quickly in
order to get to the exhibition.
T: Hmm, let me think. Private courier
companies are expensive - that's why we
don't usually use them.
A: Yes, but if we can't send these books, we
can't sell them in Indonesia. Think how much
that will cost because we didn't send it by
courier.
T: Well I guess you're right. I'll arrange for a
courier to pick it up this afternoon.
A: Thanks.
Conversation 2
J =J udith, S =Scott
J : J eremy got into real trouble this morning.
S: What happened?
J : You know the office is non-smoking.
S: Sure.
J : Well, he went into the storeroom in order
to have a cigarette.
S: And?
J : So that the smoke alarm wouldn't work,
he put his jacket over it.
S: He put his jacket on the smoke alarm
because he wanted to smoke in the
storeroom?
J : Yes. It didn't work, of course.
S: No?
J : No, the alarm went off and one of our
colleagues, the fire officer, threw water into
the storeroom to stop the fire.
S: All over J eremy?
J : Yes - completely wet - and then the boss
found out...
S: Oh dear...
Conversation 3
S =Sanjiv, C =Charles
S: Where do we need to go in order to get
a good meal?
C: Let me give you a tip - the Parthenon
restaurant is good. It's the best restaurant
near here. Good food, warm atmosphere.
S: Oh yes?
C: Traditional Greek food.
S: That sounds good - I'd like to try it.
C: So that you'll get a place, I'll book a seat
for you.
S: That's great - I want a table with my four
colleagues.
C: A table for five.
S: Yes, and because we don't speak Greek,
can you ask for the menu in English?
C: Sure. I'll do that.
