GENERAL NOTES:
(a) The user is responsible for assuring that bolting material is not used beyond the limits specified in the governing code or regulations.
(b) ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II material that also meet the requirements of the listed ASTM specification may also
be used.
(c) Material limitations, restrictions, and special requirements are shown on pressure-temperature tables.
NOTES:
(1) Repair welding of bolting material is not permitted.
(2) Where austenitic bolting materials have been carbide solution treated but not strain hardened, they are designated Class 1 or
Class 1A in ASTM A193. ASTM A194 nuts of corresponding material are recommended.
(3) Where austenitic bolting materials have been carbide solution treated and strain hardened, they are designated Class 2 in
ASTM A193.
ASTM A194 nuts of corresponding material are recommended.
(4) For limitations of usage and strength levels, see ASME B16.34 para. 5.1.1.
(5) Bolts with drilled or undersize heads shall not be used.
(6) For ferritic bolting materials intended for service at low temperatures, ASTM A194 Gr. 4 or Gr. 7 nuts are recommended.
(7) Acceptable nuts for use with these quenched and tampered steel bolts are ASTM A194 Grade 2 and 2H.
(8) Mechanical property requirements for studs shall be the same as those for bolts.
(9) These are bolting materials suitable for high temperature service with austenitic stainless steel valve materials.
(10) Only Grades 651 and 660 shall be used.
(11) Nuts may be of the same material or may be of compatible grade of ASTM A194.
(12) Forging quality not permitted unless the producer last heating or working these parts tests them as required for other permitted
conditions in the same specification and certifies their final tensile, yield, and elongation properties to equal or exceed the require
ments for one of the other
permitted conditions.
(13) Maximum operating temperature is arbitrarily set at 500F (260C) unless material has been annealed, solution annealed, or hot
finished, because hard temper adversely affects design stress in the creep-rupture temperature range.

All dimensions are given in inches.

Height of large and small male and tongue is 0.25 in. on all sizes and classes.
Depth of groove or female is 0.19 in. on all sizes and classes.
Raised portion or full face may be furnished unless otherwise specified on order.
For small male and female joints care should be taken in the use of these dimensions to insure that
the inside diameter of fitting or pipe is small enough to permit sufficient bearing surface to prevent the
crushing of the gasket. This applies particularly on lines where the joint is made on the end of the pipe.
Inside diameter of fitting should match inside diameter of pipe as specified by purchaser.
Large male and female faces and large tongue and groove are not applicable to Class 150 because of
potential dimensional conflicts.

Flow Calculations
How to use Cv
Valve coefficient (Cv) is a number which represents a valve's
ability to pass flow. The bigger the Cv, the more flow a valve can
pass with a given pressure drop. A Cv of 1 means a valve will pass
1 gallon per minute (gpm) of 60 F water with a pressure drop (dp)
of 1 PSI across the valve. A Cv of 350 means a valve will pass 350
gpm of 60 F water with a dp of 1 PSI.

2. What is the pressure drop through a 14"x12"x14" Class 900

Venturi pressure seal gate valve with the same conditions as
example 1.
Solution: Use formula 1.
Cv = 6285 (from page 26)

3. What is the smallest Class 2500 gate valve that will have less
than a 5 PSI pressure drop in 900 F, 1200 PSI steam service
at a flow rate of 500,000 lbs/hr?
Solution: Use formula 1.

Above formulas are not valid under the following conditions:
(a) For compressible fluids, where pressure drop exceeds
half the inlet pressure.
(b) For non-compressible fluids, where pressure drop causes
cavitation or flashing.
(c) For dual-phase flow such as steam-water mixtures.

EXAMPLE
1. What is the pressure drop through a 14" Class 900 pressure
seal gate valve with 400 F water, 1500 PSIG, and 5,000,000
lbs/hr flow rate?
Solution: Use formula 1.

Flow Calculations
Calculating Seat Port Velocity
The following formulas can be used to calculate seat port
velocity in any valve:
F(v )2
Flow (lbs/hr): vel: (fps) =
25A
0.32Q
Flow (GPM): vel: (fps) =
A
where:
F = flow (lbs/hr)
v = square root of specific volume
A = seat port area (in2)
Q = flow (gpm)

Example:
What is the seat port velocity in a 12" Figure 58809
(Class 900) check valve with a flow rate of 90,000 lbs/
hr of steam at 500 F and 200 PSIG?
Answer:
From the steam tables v is 1.61, and from the seat
port area table A is 78.5 in2.
Vel (fps) =

F(v )2 90,000 (1.61)2

=
= 118.8 fps
25 (78.5)
25A

Example:
What is the seat port velocity in a 12" Figure 180 (Class
150) Swing Check Valve with a flow rate of 90,000 lbs/
hr of steam at 500F and 200 PSIG?
Answer:
From the tables v is 1.61 and A is 113.1 in3.
Vel (fps) =

F(v )2 90,000 (1.61)2

=
= 82.5 fps
25 (113.1)
25A

LIMITATIONS
Velocity formulas are not valid under the following conditions:
(a) For compressible fluids, where pressure drop exceeds
half the inlet pressure.
(b) For non-compressible fluids, where pressure drop
causes cavitation or flashing.
(c) For dual-phase flow such as steam-water mixtures.

The flow coefficient (Cv) listed in the tables apply to fully open valves only.
Flow coefficients at other than fully open may be approximated by use of the
characteristic flow curves for tilting disc check and globe valves. Gate valves
are not recommended for throttling service.

SOLUTION:
From the flow coefficient table above, the fully open Cv for a 12 inch, Class
900 globe valve is 1820.
Consulting Figure 2, the percent of fully open Cv at 1/4 valve open is 52%.

EXAMPLE:
What is the Cv of a 12 inch Class 900 Pacific pressure seal globe valve
1/4 open?

3201 Walnut Avenue Long Beach, CA 90807

Tel: 562.426.2531 Fax: 562.595.9717 www.cranevalve.com

The Cv at 1/4 open is then computed as:

0.52 x 1820 = 946.

(a) The values in bold face type correspond to the values in the Joint SAE-ASME-ASTM hardness conversions as
printed in ASTM E48, Table 3. (b) Brinell numbers are based on the diameter of impressed indentation. If the ball
distorts (flattens) during test, Brinell numbers will vary in accordance with the degree of such distortion when
related to hardness determined with a Vickers diamond pyramid, Rockwell brate or other penetrator which does
not sensibly distort. At high hardness, therefore, the relationship between Brinell and Vickers or Rockwell scales
is affected by the type of ball used. Steel balls (standard or Hultgren) tend to flatten slightly more than carbide balls,

resulting in larger indentation and lower Brinell number than shown by a carbide ball. Thus, on a specimen of 640
Vickers, a Hultgren ball will leave a 2.55 mm impression (578 Bhn) and the carbide ball a 2.50 mm impression
(601 Bhn). Conversely, identical impression diameters for both types of ball will correspond to different Vickers
or Rockwell values. Thus, if both impressions are 2.55 mm (578 Bhn) material tested with a Hulgren ball has a
Vickers hardness of 640, while material tested with a carbide ball has a Vickers hardness of 615 (c). Values in
parentheses are beyond normal range.

Technical Data
Storage Installation Maintenance
Precautions

Storage
If valves are not put into service within three
months after factory shipment, long term storage
measures should be initiated to preclude valve
deterioration. Contact Pacific Valves for details
regarding long term storage procedures.

Installation
HANDLINGValves should always be installed
in clean lines. Use lifting lugs where provided. If
lugs are not provided, slings should be used.
VALVES MUST NEVER BE LIFTED BY
HANDWHEELS OR STEMS.
WELD END VALVESWeld end valves should
be installed using proper welding practices similar to procedures covered in ANSI B31.1 through
B31.8. Care must be taken not to overheat valve
bodies. Temperatures exceeding 400F in the
seat area of the valves during welding may cause
seat distortion and leakage. During the welding
operation, the valve should be assembled and in
the closed position for maximum support and
protection of seating surfaces. Weld debris should
be cleaned from line and valve internals before
operating valves.

Maintenance
FLANGED BONNET JOINTValve bonnet joints
are assembled to design specifications at the
time of factory assembly. However, because of
the flexible nature of joint materials, varying applications can affect bolt stress and cause bonnet
leakage problems. Internal pressure, temperature and external piping loads can affect the
bonnet seal and certain precautions must be
taken to prevent joint leakage. Line pressure
tends to relieve gasket loads during operation. All
bolted joints should be inspected periodically and
retorqued as needed.
Factory assembly takes place at ambient temperatures. However, many actual service conditions are at elevated temperatures. For conditions where bolting creep (elongation under
stressincreasing with higher temperatures) can
occur, it is recommended that bonnet bolting be
retorqued after the first shutdown of the system.
For services over 500F, retorque bolts during
the first 100 hours regardless of whether or not
shutdown has occurred.

Because valve assemblies are often stored for

long periods before installation, the above considerations are also applicable. This means torquing before start-up is required if prolonged storage occurs.
Distortion of valves, especially lower ANSI pressure classes, can occur when piping loads become excessive. To prevent this situation, inspect valve and piping assemblies to insure
against piping misalignment. External pipe supports should be used to eliminate misalignment.
Bonnet maintenance should, whenever possible,
be accomplished without disassembling the
valves. Retorquing bolts is the most effective
means of insuring against leaks. However, as
pointed out in the chart notes, special conditions
may require torque modifications. Consult Pacific
Valves when more exacting means are required.
NEVER DISASSEMBLE VALVES COVERED
BY FACTORY WARRANTY WITHOUT PREVIOUSLY CONTACTING PACIFIC VALVES. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY VOID WARRANTY. Bonnet gaskets, other than undamaged ring joint
type, should not be reused if valves are disassembled.
PACKINGValve packing should be checked
periodically to prevent leakage. Tightening adjustments may be sufficient, but care should be
taken not to over compress packing, which may
cause excessive valve operating torque. From
time to time packing may need to be added or
replaced.
LUBRICATIONWhere lube fittings are provided, valves should be lubricated periodically.
Stem threads must be bushed with lubricant to
avoid damage and excessive torque from developing. Valves should never be operated with
unlubricated stem threads or yoke sleeves.

Before installing a Pacific valve check the data on

the permanently affixed metal nameplate and
any other attached tag against the purchase
order, to assure that the valve is of the design and
material required for the intended service. Make
sure that the valve is new and in the factory asbuilt condition prior to use. All new Pacific valves
carry a limited warranty against defects in workmanship and materials at time of factory shipment, but such warranty is voided when valves
are changed in any way. Please see scope of
limited warranty as set forth in the quotation.
While all Pacific valves are tested at the factory to
insure compliance with industry standards and
purchase specifications, they will eventually experience deterioration or wear which could cause
leakage or malfunction. A preventative maintenance program, including periodic inspection of
packing, gaskets and seats is a key to reducing
the occurrence of these problems. Factors that
affect valve service life include but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
1. Selection of proper design and materials for
the intended service.
2. Frequency of opening and closing.
3. Corrosive and/or erosive properties of the
contained fluid.
4. Service pressure and temperature.
5. Reasonable care in operation (e.g., avoidance
of overtightening of the handwheel).
6. Degree of leakage, if any, that the users
system can tolerate.
7. Proper installation and maintenance,
For specific recommendations on maintenance
or service consult Pacific Valves.

1. Bolts should be progressively tightened in a star pattern to prevent cocking of the flange and uneven gasket
pressure.
2. Torque values listed are typical or alloy steel bolts (approximately 100,000 psi yield strength) used with carbon or
