MY PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

As for me, Teaching is an activity, a profession that requires a commitment


to human relationships, an understanding of the human condition and a deep
knowledge of a particular subject. Teaching is an intense form of
communication in which knowledge, understanding and attitudes are
conveyed from teacher to student. Teaching is also a humanitarian activity.
Teaching should involve commitment to the personal growth of each
student. A teacher should help his (her) students develop into scholars. They
should become problem solvers. They should use their knowledge to analyze
the world around them and so achieve results in diverse environments.
I know all my students by name. I speak with them outside class; some of
them become good friends. College students are adults. My relationship with
them should display respect and courtesy. I expect students to act
professionally in class, participating in the class lectures and class
discussion. Occasionally, as young professionals or "pre-professionals", they
may need some coaching on the characteristics of professional, responsible
behavior, but that coaching should be done carefully, with sensitivity and
respect.

MY PHILOSOPHY OF ENGLISH TEACHING

I would like to have a very frank beginning in this important regard. The
objective of a student who attends English class is to learn to speak to
English fluently primarily rather than some other secondary purpose such
learning a poem, drama, novel etc., When it comes to teaching English to
speak, an English teacher has lots of responsibilities. Although it is
important for students to learn the grammar of the target language (TL), it is
equally, if not more, important for them to know how to use words and
phrases to produce a meaningful whole, how to use the language in the
social context, and how to use coping strategies in unfamiliar contexts. I can
help students achieve communicative competence by providing them with
opportunities for communicative events that focus on meaning instead of
form. This is what I have experienced in my observation with foreign
children (native speakers):

 Before they go to school, they learn to speak fluent English. This is


because of ‘Cluster Learning’. This is how I would put about my way
of teaching English. ‘Cluster Learning’ goes like ‘givvittume’ (one
word) for a foreign child and ‘give it to me’ (four divisions) non-
native learners. ‘Pikmiup’ (one word) for a foreign child and ‘pick-
me-up’ (three divisions) for non-native learners.

 A foreign child follows the language learning rule ‘LSRW’ in a


proper order, that is , Listening to the real English spoken by it’s
parents and relatives first, Speaking English second, Reading
English Alphabets third and Writing English fourth. In our case, we
do the thing up side down. That may be the main reason why even
some of our Post Graduate students are not able to converse in
English.( This is purely my personal assumption and observation)
