This course combines lectures and laboratory sessions featuring hands-on
experience for bone and tissue grafting utilizing cadaver heads. The lectures
focus on relevant head and neck anatomy , subantral grafts, ridge expansion
techniques, soft tissue and osseous grafts, bone graft material classification
and indications, science of platelet rich plasma (PRP) and how to obtain PRP
using a simple cost-effective technique, venipuncture techniques, and pertinent
perioperative pharmacology . During the supervised laboratory sessions,
participants will review anatomical landmarks and perform procedures
demonstrated by the lecturers. Registrants will be provided a list of instruments
to bring to the course.
At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:
Recognize indications for bone grafting procedures.
Recognize anatomical landmarks pertinent to implant placement and bone
grafting procedures.
Utilize the proper instrumentation for grafting procedures.
Classify bone grafting and barrier materials and recognize indications for use
of each type.
Recognize potential complications of implant placement and bone grafting
procedures.
Apply clinical protocols for subantral augmentation (sinus lift) using lateral
wall and Summers techniques.
Apply clinical protocols for piezo surgical techniques.
Apply clinical protocols for ridge expansion techniques.
Apply clinical protocols for soft tissue grafting and manipulation.
Acquire PRP and utilize it to maximize hard and soft tissue results.
Develop a perioperative protocol for the pharmacological management of
post-operative pain and infectious complications that may occur with soft
tissue and bone grafting procedures.

James L. Rutkowski, DMD, PhD, is the course director . He maintains an
implant practice in Clarion, Pennsylvania. A graduate of the University of
Pittsburgh School of Dentistry and the Duquesne University School of
Pharmacy, Dr. Rutkowski received his PhD degree in Pharmacology/Toxicology
from Duquesne University in 2008. A Fellow of the AAID and a Diplomate of
the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID), the
certifying board that the AAID sponsors, Dr . Rutkowski is the Editor of the
Journal of Oral Implantology and currently serves as president of the ABOI/ID.
Craig D. Cooper, DDS, a graduate of Indiana University School of
Dentistry, practices in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a Fellow of the AAID
and a Diplomate of the ABOI/ID. Dr. Cooper has extensive experience in
implant surgery , concentrating his practice on implant placement for
referring dentists. He lectures frequently on implant-related topics.
Barry Loughner, DDS, PhD, who graduated from New York University's
School of Dentistry, practices in Orlando, Florida. He has an MS degree
in Anatomy and a PhD in Neurophysiology , both from the University of
Florida. Dr. Loughner is an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at the
College of Dentistry, University of Florida. (Wright State location only)
James W. Fennell, DDS, a graduate of the Ohio State University School
of Dentistry, completed a general practice residency at W omack Army
Hospital and served as Of ficer in Charge of the dental facility at Cook
Barracks, Goppingen, Germany . A graduate of the Midwest Implant
Institute, Dr. Fennell is an Associate Fellow of the AAID and a Diplomate
of the ABOI/ID and practices general, implant and sedation dentistry in
Cincinnati, OH.

advance the practice of implant dentistry through education, credentialing, and advocacy
on behalf of patients and practitioners. The AAID promotes both the individual and team
approaches to implant dentistry.
The AAID offers the Associate Fellow and Fellow credentials while its sponsored board, the
American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID), of fers the Diplomate
credential. All three credentials require prior didactic training and clinical experience as well
as passing a rigorous examination based on psychometric principles.
