The Development of Mass Transportation
(The Termination of Parahyangan Train Operation)
ABSTRACT Transportation in Indonesia is one of the problems which have little
attention from Indonesian government. A recent issue about the end of the a
train which have served the Jakarta-Bandung route for nearly 4 years!
"arahyangan ! raised ob#ections from public due to some reasons. This paper
brie$y reviews the law underlying this issue! the reason of ceasing the operation
of the Bandung "arahyangan train and the e%ect of ceasing the operation of the
Bandung "arahyangan train. The analysis of the problem brings about a clear
view about the problem so the problem hopefully will not happen again in the
future. There are some articles used in this paper as references in conducting
the analysis. The main article used in this paper is taken from &ompas.com

People say that "the development of culture and technology of a nation
is truly represented through its development of mass transportation
technology". Personally, the sentence is not excessive many large
cities in the !orld can move for!ard "ecause it is accompanied "y its
improvement of mass transportation. #ass transportation sho!s the
civility of society, the progress of pu"lic technology and the
environmental pu"lic a!areness and the government partisanship !ith
the society.

Parahyangan Train "egan hard to compete since the toll Cipularang
operate. This is very regretta"le, !hen people need a variety of
transportation model to develop tourism sector, the government chose
to stop operating the Parahyangan train. #any people hope that there
!ill "e a !in$!in solution for this pro"lem "ecause parahyangan train
has many historical factors that potentially might "ecome a very
interesting and pro%ta"le if it is !ell managed.
This paper aims to %nd out the reasons !hy PT &A' cease the operation
of Parahyangan train, to (no! the e)ect of ceasing the operation of
Parahyangan train for the society, and !hat PT &A' do after cease the

The Parahyangan train, !hich served passengers relia"ly from *3=*,
!as o@cially phased out on April .A due to a steep decline in
passenger num"ers. The locomotive that serves this route reBuires
A55 liters of diesel to travel .55 (ilometers long for one trip "ut the
train can only get a"out C= passengers !hich means that PT &A' get
/D.C million dollars for one trip. 't can only :ust cover the cost of
diesel fuel cre! and employee salaries are not yet covered.
Another reason is the train service has not "een a"le to compete
!ith "uses plying the same route via the ne! Ea(arta$Bandung turn

&A Parahyangan has high historical and social value so that is very
misera"le to remove the existence of a rail!ay !hich has existed
since the 8utch era, !here for the construction of its tunnels
reBuires the sacri%ce of thousands of lives. Besides, Pusat Pelestarian
Benda dan Aset Berse:arah PT &ereta Api FPersero+ have created a ne!
type of tourism, 4eritage Rail!ay Trip, to see ho! precious and
historical Ea(arta$Bandung route is. Because of its termination,
passenger !ho !ant to feel relax and see the scenery along the trip
Bandung$Ea(arta, !hich is very fresh and greatly sho!s the "eauty
of 'ndonesia should spend more money to "uy Argo 7ede tic(et.
The decision to terminate &A Parahyangan operation !as clearly
incriminating for many people and of course a)ected the livelihood
of the people associated !ith the existence of this train. #ost of the
passengers chose this train "ecause they prefer a more economical
transportation !hich can deliver the goods in large Buantities. The
su"stitute of &A Parahyangan, &A Argo 7ede, can not heal the
disappointment of the passengers, "ecause the price of train is very
expensive. Business class train tic(ets for parahyangan costs RP
/5,555 and costs D5,555 for the executive class, !hile tic(ets !orth
of &A Argo 7ede RP =H,555.
Rail!ay transportation in another countries is moderniIed and
managed "y a sophisticated management, increased its service and
technology, !hereas in our country, rail!ay replaced "y
transportation that produces a lot of air pollution, sacri%cing land
rice %elds and !ater catchment areas, and di)using natural energy.
Termination of Parahyangan train operation also gives e)ect to its
rival, PT 8ay Trans and PT Citra 7raha Cipaganti. They pursue the
Parahyangan rail!ay mar(et. They see that the termination is very
potential for transportation services company. Therefore, PT 8ay
Trans plans to increase capacity of *H55 seats per day to ta(e a
train passenger mar(et Parahyangan. The addition is accompanied
"y the increased freBuency of *H5 departures
