Abstract:
The presentation will focus on an emerging system application scenario for wireless broadband, namely
vehicular communications, and will be followed by a discussion on recent research in energy
management and control.

In the context of next generation vehicular communications, real time positioning of a target vehicle
from a moving observer vehicle is a promising technology for realizing the vision of creating numerous
location-aware applications. An algorithm to detect a stranded target on the road without aid from GPS
or fixed reference nodes will be presented that exploits the periodic beacon transmission of Dedicated
Short Range Communication protocol. An extension of the algorithm to track a moving target from a
moving observer is underway and will also be highlighted. The proliferation of vehicular communications
will gradually open opportunities for many new applications, and will increase the demand for spectrum.
Under this circumstance, the use of cognitive radio in vehicular communication appears to be an
attractive solution. Some recent ongoing research on cognitive radio in the perspective of wireless
broadband and vehicular communications will be outlined.

A new paradigm in the area of energy management and control is to include the human comfort factor
into control algorithm to close the loop. The challenges to resolve are, i) to quantify the subjective
nature of comfort, ii) to measure the comfort factors in a non-intrusive way. Once done, the human
comfort factor shall be utilized as a catalyst to multivariate integrated control for lighting, HVAC and
faade system. An analysis of the daylight discomfort glare will be illustrated with a vision to incorporate
it into lighting and HVAC control algorithm for buildings.

Finally, the speaker shall draw a synergy among the topics discussed and sketch his future research
vision that encompasses vehicular communications and energy management & control for which
wireless, and specifically cognitive radio is a key enabling technology.
