Problem Set 1 (Thermal Expansion, Heat measurements & Heat transfer)

Solve the following problems Copy the problem, show complete/detailed solution, use one
bond per problem and box the final answer. You can find the constant needed in solving the
problems from the book (if not given).
1. A steel tank is completely filled 2.80 m
3
of ethanol when both the tank and the ethanol
are at a temperature of 32C. When the tank and its contents have cooled to 18.0C,
what additional volume of ethanol can be put into the tank? (see of ethanol from the
book)
2. A carpenter builds an exterior house wall with layer of wood 3.0 cm thick and a layer of
Styrofoam insulation 2.2 cm thick on the inside wall surface. The wood has k = 0.080
W/m.K and the Styrofoam has k = 0.010 W/mK. The interior surface temperature is
19.0C and the exterior surface temperature is -10C.
(a) What is the temperature at the plane where the wood meets the Styrofoam?
(b) What is the rate of heat flow per square meter through this wall?
3. (a) A wire that is 1.50 m long at 20C is found to increase in length by 1.90 cm when
warmed to 420c. Compute its average coefficient of linear expansion for this
temperature range.
(c) The wire is stretched just taut (zero tension) at 420C. Find the stress in the wire if it
is cooled to 20C without being allowed to contract. Youngs modulus for the wire is
2.0 X 10
11
Pa.
4. How many grams of steam at 100C should be used to melt 500 g of ice at 0C and raise
the resulting water to a temperature of 35C?
5. An insulated beaker of negligible mass contains 0.25 kg of water at a temperature 0f
75C. How many kilograms of ice at a temperature of -20C must be dropped into the
water to make the final temperature of the system 30C?
6. A 50 g ice cube at -20C is dropped into a container of water at 0C. How much water
will freeze onto the ice?
7. The brick of wall (k = 0.6 W/mC) of a building has dimensions of 4 m X 10 m and is 15
cm thick. How much heat (in joules) flows through the walls in a 12-hr period when the
average inside and outside temperatures are 20C and 5C respectively?
8. An iron rod (k = 79.5 W/ mC) 20 cm long with a diameter of 1.0 cm has one end
immersed in an ice-water mixture while the other end is in a steam tank at 100C.
Assume enough time has elapsed such that a uniform thermal gradient has been
established along the rod. (a) Determine the rate of heat flow along the rod.
(b) Compute how fast the ice is melting at the cold end of the rod.
(c) What is the thermal gradient along the rod?
9. A copper calorimeter (c = 0.093) whose mass is 120 g contains 350 g of water at 20
o
C.
Into these are dropped simultaneously 200 g of aluminum (c = 0.22) at 70
o
C and 150 gm
of lead (c = 0.031) at 90
o
C. Find the final temperature of the mixture. Ans. t
mix
=
26.16
