EXPLANATORY ANSWERS
Section - I
1. In the passage, paragraph after paragraph talks about
literary criticism, thus indicating that this is its central
theme. Hence, [2].
2. The first three options except are clearly mentioned
in the passage. Only, option (4) does not surface
in the discussion at any point in time. Hence, [4].
3. The passage mentions all of the options given above.
Hence, [3].
4. The fifth paragraph of the passage which states The
critics responsibility... lies to the public and to his
own standards of judgment proves that Option (4)
is the answer. Hence, [4].
5. It is clearly mentioned in beginning of the third
paragraph that because critics often try to be law-
givers, declaring which works deserve respect and
presuming to say what they are really about, it
is a perennial target of resentment. Hence, [3].
6. Pedantic means to be precise. Acerbic means
someone showing criticism in a way that is clever
and funny, but rather cruel, astringent means
someone who criticizes and unfavorable means
someone not positive, or not showing approval.
Punctilious is the exact meaning of the word
pedantic. All the other options do not relate with
the word pedantic. Hence, [2].
7. Partisan means prejudiced. All the other options
are exact meaning of the word partisan, except for
adversary which means unbiased. Adversary is
the exact opposite of the word partisan. Hence,
[3].
8. Option (2) is vague about the direction in which the
winds have moved whereas the sentence that follows
the blank clearly mentions polar waters. Options (3)
and (4) are incorrect as they mention the weakening
and stopping of the winds whereas the sentence following
the blank mentions their speeding, and the winds cannot
be weakening and speeding at the same time. Only
option (1) makes sense contextually. Hence, [1].
9. Options (1) and (2) are obvious statements: during
a break, life is easier and when you meet family and
friends, life seems worthwhile. However, the passage
suggests that it might be something more than just
these so we consider options (3) and (4). Option
(4) is wrong contextually as is evident from the sentences
that precede the blank. Hence, [3].
10. All options fit. The first four options fit in with
the tone of the preceding sentence. However, what
follows the blank is a word Endorphins. They are
not dancing angels, dead parents, life events or loved
ones. They are hormones as is given in option (5).
Hence, [5].
11. Options (1), (2) and (3) can be ruled out because
the sentence following the blank selects a few out
of the large group and talks about their preference.
Thus the underlined part should be generalised and
should include a big group in its fold. This brings
us to options (4) and (5). Option (5) is far too general
in comparison to option (4), which makes a lot of
sense when read right after the sentence preceding
the blank. Also, the passage uses a variation of first
and third person pronoun but option (5) is in second
person pronoun form. Hence, [4].
12. According to the first paragraph in the given passage,
statement (C) is the correct answer; the other two
statements are the reasons for its existence. Hence,
[1].
13. The answer is clearly given to be statement (A) in
the paragraph that describes the National Research
Council. Hence, [3].
14. The word ethical means conforming to accepted
standards of social or professional behaviour; thus
its opposite will be corrupt, which means lacking
in integrity. All other options, except corral, are
its synonyms; corral means an enclosure for keeping
cattle together and safe, which is out of context.
Hence, [2].
15. Vandalism means the deliberate destruction, deface-
ment or damage of anothers property. Scandal
means disgraceful gossip, surveillance means close
observation, reparation means compensation and
amendment means alteration. Destruction means
damage done to something, this word is almost the
same as the given word. Hence, [5].
16. At the beginning of the second paragraph of the
passage, it is given that the National Academy of
Engineering was established in 1964. Hence, [2].
17. According to the passage, Dr. Kenneth I. Shine is
the president of the Institute of Medicine. Hence,
[2].
18. According to the passage, the third option, the effects
of pornography on providers, users and networked
communities, was not clearly mentioned in the passage
as being discussed in the workshop held in Washington,
D.C. in November 1992. Hence, [3].

19. The last paragraph clearly says that the intent of
the forum was to focus primarily on the concerns
that policymakers in government and the private sector
might have. Hence, [5].
Answer for questions 20 to 23:
Explanation: Statement G is the FIRST sentence
of the passage as it refers to the birth of a boy 2,560
years ago. The SECOND sentence is obviously State-
ment A as it refers to the same, and narrows the
scope by specifically stating that Confucius was that
boy. Statement D is the THIRD sentence as it refers
to his early years. Statement B is the fourth sentence
as it talks of his disillusionment with the leaders of
the day and the journey he undertook to escape it.
Statement E is next as the FIFTH sentence as it
refers to this journey and his companions. Statement
C follows as the SIXTH sentence as it shows what
he had to endure during this journey. Statement F
is the CONCLUDING sentence of the passage as it
shows how popular he is today and highlights the
contrast between then and now.
20. The first sentence of the arrangement is G. Hence,
[4].
21. The last sentence of the arrangement is F. Hence,
[3].
22. The second sentence of the arrangement is A. Hence,
[5].
23. The fifth sentence of the arrangement is E. Hence,
[1].
24. Hiding differences behind nice-sounding radios,
pianos and violins make no sense. The same goes
for results which is totally out of context. However,
platitudes meaning trite or obvious remarks fits
and so does its synonym banalities. Hence, [3].
25. Hide, cover, bury and conceal are all logically
wrong because the latter part of the sentence mentions
the desire of being more popular, and a person whose
belongings are not seen by others will not be known.
Embellish and decorate, meaning make more
attractive by adding ornament, colour, etc., are
synonymous and fit perfectly in the blank. Hence,
[1].
26. Bathing might cause embarrassment; however, it does
not fit as the sentence mentions winning. Basking
means enjoying a pleasant situation, basting means
sewing or cooking and banking means business
carried out at a bank, none of these fit in the sentence.
Bragging and boasting, which are synonyms fit
perfectly. Hence, [4].
27. Although moving, going, flowing and sliding
might fit in the sentence, they are not forceful or
strong enough, as is indicated in the sentence.
Reverberating and echoing are synonyms, meaning
being reflected as sound waves; they fit here logi-
cally. Hence, [5].
28. The sentence that contains this blank is a question
on how to get individuals into developing a habit
that reduces energy. Obviously, the word that follows
energy here should be something indicating usage because
that is the only thing, which needs reduction. In the
options given, all except consumption mean making
(here, of energy) which is a good thing and does not
need to be reduced. Moreover, consumption means
use. This makes it the correct answer. Hence, [2].
29. The sentence talks about certain behaviours that are
enacted in some ways which are shared across various
parts of the world; the examples given are cooking
and showering. In normal cases, these are not chal-
lenging. They also cannot be nasty, dirty or foul
aw we all know that they are ways of feeding and
cleansing oneself. However, they are routine meaning
everyday or habitual, which fits contextually also
as practice theory is being discussed in the sentenced.
Hence, [2].
30. The sentence talks about having a shower in the
developed world which includes the use of a modern
bathroom and of cleanliness methods. Dirty does
not fit contextually. Since it is talking about the
developed world, nor does bountiful, which means
abundant, also unreliable which means not
trustworthy is out of context, as water is a resource
paid for and expected to be delivered, in whatever
large or limited quantities it is available. Unique
also does not apply as this is not about showering
in a spa or hot spring. What is left is reticulated,
meaning of an interconnected network; this fits
because in the developed world, water is collected
and distributed carefully through such a system. Hence,
[5].
31. The sent ence tal ks about there being more at
_______________ than deciding to change. Option
and choice are synonyms, meaning one among a
number of alternatives This does not fit contextually
or grammatically. Decision is also out of context.
Stake and hand fit grammatically; however, at
stake indicates at risk whereas at hand indicates
availability. Contextually stake is correct. Hence,
[2].
32. Here, all options fit grammatically. However, like
or love surely do not fit contextually with that
we want the convenience of standby mode. The same
goes for indicate and show. Assume is the perfect
fit as it means to take for granted. Hence, [3].

33. The sentence talks about a time when using public
transport is more likely it is after people make
a plan about how and when they wish to use it. Therefore
the missing word is an adjective of the noun plans.
The only option that fits contextually is concrete,
meaning capable of being perceived by the senses.
It cannot be abstract or vague or imaginary. Plans
cannot be silly or careless if they are to be fulfilled.
Hence, [3].
34. The sentence says that we need to remember that
practices are something, which when threatened, are
defended. Here all options valued counted, mea-
sured, calculated, and forecast have the same
meaning; that is, they mean having estimated or
determined the nature, value, quality, ability, extent,
or significance of something. However, they have
alternate meanings too. Of all those alternate meanings,
the word valued has the meaning held dear or treasured.
This makes it a perfect fit for the blank. Hence,
[1].
35. The clue to answering this lies in the preceding sentence,
which says that However, we need to remember that
practices are valued and, when threatened, are de-
fended. This means that in the given sentence, the
blank cannot be replaced by address, advantage,
ill or care. Only account is left and it makes
perfect sense because it means to take into consid-
eration. Hence, [2].
36. The sentence talks about the need to match desire
and ability with something that makes change easier.
It cannot be text, which is written word(s), next,
which means immediately following in time or order
or betwixt, which is an old English word for between.
Pretext means something serving to conceal plans,
which does not fit contextually. Context which means
set of facts or circumstances that surround a situ-
ation or event fits in grammatically and contextually.
Hence, [2].
37. If we try using very and more, it will be clear
that they do not fit the blank represents an article.
The sentence cannot obviously be if we want to
address a inherent stickiness of everyday practice,
as inherent starts with a vowel. Out of the remaining,
although an seems to fit, the is the correct answer
as the phrase refers to not any particular stickiness,
but the stickiness of everyday life. Hence, [4].
38. The words defiant, aggressive and hostile are
all synonyms of OBSTREPEROUS, which means
noisily and stubbornly defiant, whereas placid means
satisfied. Hence, [4].
39. The word remnant means a small part or portion
that remains, regional means characteristic of a
region. Recurrent and repeating are synonyms
of PERENNIAL. Hence, [3].
40. The word MALEVOLENT means wishing evil to
others or characterized by hatred or ill-will, which
is the same as malicious. Benevolent, benign and
caring are all opposites of this word. Hence, [2].
