Expression of Interest for phd enrollment

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am applying for admission to the Ph.D. program in Finance under Waikato Management
School (WMS) because I want a career in the research and teaching of finance. I have
chosen WMS since the tuition fees are less compared to the other universities at the same
standard in the world. It is also ranked within the top 2% universities in the world. Moreover, I
have heard about Ph.D. program from one of my mates of under graduation who has already
completed PhD from WMS and am impressed with the emphasis placed on technical and
analytical skills, general management orientation and rigorous research methodology. I believe
that the Ph.D. program in Finance under WMS would be invaluable in helping me to pursue my
career objective in the research and teaching. Although I have started my career at the
corporate sector, the last two years of teaching and consulting experiences has strongly
motivated me to settle down in the research and teaching career for the rest of my life.
I completed my BBA from School of Business of North South University, Dhaka, Bangladesh,
majoring in Finance & Accounting. During my under graduation, I did three comprehensive
researches as course requirements that had basically introduced and inspired me to the
research works initially in my life. The first one was to find if the governance of Dhaka Stock
Exchange (DSE) has any positive relation to the under pricing or overpricing of the shares.
The second was to examine if covered interest parity exist between Bangladesh and India in
International Financial Management course. The last one was to examine the factors that
determine the Economic Order Quantity in the ready-made garment sector in Bangladesh in
Operation and Supply Management course. Other than the researches, I had to submit report
at almost all the courses that helped me gain a broad exposure to different industries home
and abroad. Otherwise, it would not have been possible to study specific business and
technology related issues in depth. Although academically I did not perform to my satisfaction
(I finished with a GPA of 2.96, partly due to financial & health reasons), I tried to make it up
at my masters. If you look at my transcript, you would find that the first two years of my
under graduation is better compared to last two years.
I have started working in the Bad Debt and Churn Management department of the leading
telecommunication company in Bangladesh right after the completion of my bachelor degree.
The main objective of the Bad Debt & Churn Management department is to conduct a
continuous research to find out the factors to reduce the bad debt & churn rate. Before
leaving for United Kingdom for my Msc program, I worked in a management consultancy firm
named Management Consultancy Services Ltd for six months where I professionally attached
myself to the field work. I developed job description, compensation and benefits packages,
and reviewing current salaries and proposed new salaries, developing organ gram and span of
management and proposing pension and gratuity fund for Shepherd Group of Industries. The
company was a joint venture project between Taiwan and Bangladesh operating in textile
industry in Bangladesh. This work allowed me to gather current information, analyzing it and
developing the above mentioned activities after interviewing each and every employees and
workers at all levels.

I finished a diploma in business administration from Churchill College, London before
commencing my Msc in United Kingdom. I started my Msc in Finance & Investment Analysis in
2009 and successfully completed it in 2010 with merit at Maritime Campus of University of
Greenwich, London. The dissertation of my Msc program was the valuable piece of research
work so far in my life. The three steps model of portfolio formation, portfolio beta estimation,
and testing, each step happening in a subsequent time period of Fama and MacBeth (1973)
had been applied in a modified way in my dissertation to re-examine how beta, size and book-
to-market effect the UK stock returns.
I am currently teaching at university level and before that I worked as an assistant Financial
Consultant into the Governance project of Dhaka Stock Exchange which was run by the joint
authority of Securities and Exchange Commission, Bangladesh and Asian Development Bank.
I have the skills, abilities and efficiency with effectiveness necessary to complete the doctoral
degree at WMS in Finance if the admission committee allows me to enroll at WMS.
