Pochampally Handloom Park

Site Visit
Site Visited On: 19.09.2014

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND:
The Pochampally Handloom Park is situated around 60km Away from Hyderabad. This is the
Largest Handloom Ikat weaving facility park of India. The total area of this park is 24 Acres.
The main process that was found in this area is Designing, Tying & Dying facility and weaving.
For weaving this facility depends totally on the Handloom system. There is no Power Loom
facility.
The facility is placed near the famous Pochampaly Village and the area is surrounded by artisans
who belong to this silk and cotton weaving tradition.
Naturally the silk and cotton materials were produced by the artisans in the village but as the
production were de-centralized, the quality of these products were not consistent. Considering
these facts 28 private entrepreneurs had built this facility together to accelerate the growth and
improve the quality of the materials to match the gradually increasing demand of handloom
products worldwide.
The facility was fully operational by 2008. It is consists of a design center, laboratory and
marketing interface. In total the park has 2000 Looms with a highest production capacity of
40,00,000 meters of cloth per annum.

LOCATION:

The Site is 60km Away from the city of Hydrabad. It can be accessed by NH:9. After NH:9 there is a
narrow road of 8km length, which leads to the site.

SIZE OF EQUIPMENTS AND AREAS:
The Main Areas Were used for Hasndloom Weaving are:
Dying Area: 40m X 27m (An enclosed place with agequate infrastructureprovisions to
cater boilers)
Large Designing Unit : 60m X 20m (A long space, where silk threades are manually tied
prior to dying)
Small Designing Unit: 6m X 6m (Small rooms with no big mechines. People do tying prior
to hand dying)
Single Modules for Weaving facility: 4.5m X 5m (This is the most common feature of this
facility manual weavings are done in this place with the help of framed loom)
The Main Mechines Were used for Handloom Weaving are:
Framed Loom: (2.4m X 1.8m)
Wide Loom: (2.4m X 4m)
Neumatic Loom: (1.5m X 1.8m)

DESIGNNING UNIT:
The Designing unit will be placed in the proposed Standerd Design Factory Building (SFD
Building). The designing unit is a place where the silk threads are tied with rubber tubes in
strategic locations prior to dying. This provides unique desired design in the threads during
dying.

DYING UNIT:
The process of dying is done after the Designning process and the tying process is done. The
tide threads are taken to the dying room to be coloured. The dying can be done in two
processes.
Manual Duing With Heat: This is a quick process that requires a boilers. This process requires
less amounto time, but does not provide the uniform colour in threads.

MANUAL DYING WITH HEAT
Mechanical Dying without Heat: This process does not require any heat. This process is
mechanical and automated. This process takes longer time but this cold process provides better
quality of dying

In the visited facility tghere were a room of 40m X 27m that accomodated a Manual
Heating Dying Meachine and Three Mechanised dying units.

MECHANICAL DYING WITHOUT HEAT
WEAVING UNIT:
The weaving unit has 2000 small cubicles for weavers. These cubicles are place around a
courtyard and connected through passages. The clients were satisfied with the layouts. This
facilitu is owned by a single organisation. In our proposal we are planning to different small
groups to work separate in a same building (The Proposed SDF building) hence, some
seperators has to be provided to create a flexible design where different groups can work
simonteniously.
The cubicles will be provided to the groups along with the weaving machines to start the work
with no furthur delay after construction.
