As we stood by the cattle trough, I looked over
the faces of the crowd gathered there.
I had seen most of them at our home or at one of
the village church services that I had attended in
recent months. The women were clothed in the
traditional red, white, blue, and black colors of
the Maasai. One or two carried babies on their
backs. The men were standing with one leg
crossed over the other and their walking sticks
tucked between.
Nothing seemed unusual here. Tothecasual pas
ser-by, all was just as usual. But to myeyethere
was great drama involvedin this scene.
In the cluster of men, three individuals stood out
to me, as verydifferent. One manwas oldand
respected. Hewore the traditional stocking cap
that men his ageoften don as a symbol of maturi
ty. His name is OleManyaas. Another man
stood very near him. They were immersed in
deep conversation. The second manwas shorter
than the first but of his same age group. He, too,
wore the"symbol of maturity" on hishead. His
name is Lolchaki.
Then standinga little way off, but with other men
of his age set, was a younger man in westem
dress. His name is Paul.
Oneof the otheryounger menmoved to the edge
of the cattle trough and announced that we were
to begin. The twooldmen walked together to
ward the cattle trough. Lolchaki passed his hat
and outer sheets to Ole Manyaas and stepped into
the trough.

But, before I continue with the drama, let me
bringyouup-to-date on the characters to whom
you have been introduced.
OleManyaas had been a drunkard formost of his
adult life. Hejust seemed tofitui trouble andar
guments at
everycomer. Theneighteen months ago. Ken
and one other Maasai church elder began to fast
and pray for this man. Several weeks later when
theypresented OleManyaas withthe good news
of Jesus, he acceptedthe news joyfully. His
habits changed, andthis change was particularly
obvious to his family.
The younger man, Paul, is the sonof Ole Man
yaas. Paul was touched by the change hesaw
in his father. Paul had been a Christian for sev
eral years, but heknew that hedidn't exhibit the
attitude of joy andpeacethat his father now
showed.
Ken and the Maasai elder began to pray again,
but this time for Paul and the pride that seemed to
hold him captive.
As the weeks went by, Paul began clianging. He
came to our home one day andsaid that he and
his father wanted to begin a preaching circuit to
gether toshare the good news of Jesus with his
father's friends in other nearby villagers. They
continued wimessing for six months.
One day Paul asked us tojoinhim and his father
inprayer as they went to talk to Lolchaki, the
third man in our drama. They wanted us to pray
with them that Lolchaki would receive Jesus and
the new life He could offer him.

We prayed, they witnessed, and so we arrived back
at the cattle trough!
Lolchaki stepped into the local baptistry (the previ
ously mentioned cattle trough). Ole Manyaas
strengthened him for the moment, and Paul
watched carefully as his diligent, self-sacrificing la
bor bore fimit in the life of Lolchaki.
The drama shows an old man changed by the Lord
Jesus through prayer, a younger man changed by
the Lord Jesus throu^ prayer, and athird man en
countered by the chang^lives ofthe previous two
AND changed by the Lord Jesus THROUGH
PRAYER! What is the real drama in this story? It is
the power of prayer!
Last Simday as church ended, a new scene to the
on-going drama began. The two older men left the
service to share the Lord's life-changing news
with still another age-mate of theirs. And where
are we? PRAYING!!
