BULK PROTECTOR Cargo Holds Water Ingress Monitoring & Alarm Detection System BULK PROTECTOR Cargo Holds Water Ingress Monitoring & Alarm Detection System Introduction SELMA Cargo Holds Water Ingress Detection System BULK PROTECTOR supervises and detects Water presence in Cargo Holds Area, any Ballast Tank and any Dry/Void Space any part of which extends forward of Foremost Cargo Hold (other than chain locker).
The main aim of the System is to perform Detection by generating Audible & Visual Alarm Signal by indicating the Point where the Water was detected.
In particular according to IMO Resolution MSC.145 (77) Performance Standards for Water Level Detectors on Bulk Carriers and IACS Unified Interpretation (UI) SC180 the supervision should be implemented on the following points :
Specifically in Cargo Holds Area the Alarm is performed when Water Level reaches 0.5m & 2.0m Height from inner Bottom. In Fore Peak Tank or Ballast Tank Area forward of Collision Bulkhead, the Alarm is performed when Water Level reaches 10% of Tank Level Capacity. In any Dry or Void Space Forward of foremost cargo hold the Alarm Signal is performed when Water Level reaches 0.1m above Deck.
Furthermore Override Buttons are comprised in order to disable Alarm on Fore Peak Tank, Ballast Tank forward of Collision Bulkhead and in Holds that are used as Ballast. When the Water Level is below Alarm Set Points then automatically the Fore Peak Tank, Ballast Tank & Ballast Hold Override function change over into Alarm Normal Operation according to MSC.145 (77).
Finally all Alarms are performed according to IMO Code on Alarms and Indications 1995 refer to 3.3.2 of IMO Resolution MSC.145 (77).
BULK PROTECTOR Cargo Holds Water Ingress Monitoring & Alarm Detection System Equipment of BULK PROTECTOR SELMA Cargo Holds Water Ingress Detection System BULK PROTECTOR comprises state-of-the-art Control & Instrumentation Technology with Maximum Performance Capabilities implementing Monitoring and Alarm Function Operation. The important concept is the implementation of Continuous Water Level Monitoring in each Hold and Fore Peak Tank, Ballast Tank and perform Alarm on Set Point stated by IMO Resolution MSC.145 (77) Performance Standards for Water Level Detectors on Bulk Carriers and IACS Unified Interpretation (UI) SC180.

BULK PROTECTOR Cargo Holds Water Ingress Monitoring & Alarm Detection System Philosophy of BULK PROTECTOR The Philosophy of BULK PROTECTOR is the following :
Sensor Operation (Cargo Holds & Ballast Tanks forward of Collision Bulkhead) : In particular when in one of the supervised Areas in Bulk Carriers is inserted Water, then the Water implements hydrostatic Pressure related to its Level. The Sensors that are installed in Bottom of the Cargo Holds & Ballast Tank are Submersible Electronic Level Transmitters and provide Continuous Water Level Monitoring by transmitting Signal 4- 20mA. The Submersible Level Pressure Transmitters perform Water Level measurement with the hydrostatic pressure that is applied on the Transmitter. The direct conversion of the pressure into an electrical signal is achieved by a minute deflection of sensor which changes the resistance of the bridge with the applied stress. Changes in pressure cause a corresponding change in the transmitter output in proportion to the bridge unbalance. A single electronic circuit supplies power to sensor receives its signal providing conversion into 4-20mA. The Submersible Electronic Transmitters are Stainless Steel, Ex & Marine Approved with IP68 Circuit Enclosures.
Sensor Operation (Dry/Void Space fwd of foremost Cargo Hold if existed in Vessel) : If vessel comprises Dry/Void Space forward of Foremost Cargo Hold is installed Ultrasonic Level Sensor on height 0.1m above Deck (Refer to Sensor Installation Diagram). It is worthy to be noted that Ultrasonic Level Sensor is designed for Marine Applications for liquid detection and operate on the principle of distributed acoustic waves in a metal rod. If the rod is not covered by the liquid the sound waves are dispersed freely without any interference. If liquid covers the rod the emission of sound waves is muffled and this interference is picked up by the piezoelectric sensor and transmitted by a Signal to the Current Loop (On-Off). The Ultrasonic Level Sensor is Stainless Steel, Ex, Marine Approved with IP68 Circuit Enclosure.
The installation of Sensors is illustrated on attached Diagrams according to Vessel particular Specifications. Protection procedure of Sensors is predicted [Refer to Sensor Installation Diagrams] in order to avoid contact of Sensors with Cargo and implement protection from Unloading Machineries. selma automation Technical Operation Manual Page - 4
BULK PROTECTOR Cargo Holds Water Ingress Monitoring & Alarm Detection System The Installation inside Cargo Holds is intrinsically safe according to IMO Resolution MSC145(77)Performance Standards for Water Level Detectors on Bulk Carriers and IACS (UI) SC180. The Sensors in Cargo Holds are Intrinsically Safe and Zenner Barriers are comprised in Local Junction Boxes in order to perform Ex Installation. Cargo Holds Sensors are tested according to IACS SC180 with Sand, Coal, Iron, Grain
Local Junction Boxes of BULK PROTECTOR: The Transmitted Signal is 4 20mA and the Transmission is implemented through Special Submersible Cable that is fixed with Sensor. (Sea Water Resistant & High Temp Resistant up to 120oC) which is connected on Deck Corresponding Local Junction Box of specific Hold or Fore Peak Tank [Local J. Box]. All Signals from Local junction Boxes are concentrated on Final Main Junction Box. The Cargo Holds Sensors Signals are passed through Zenner Barriers (Local Junction Boxes). The Signals of Fore Peak Tank and Dry/Void Space (If existed) do not require Zenner Barrier Presence according to IMO Resolution MSC.145(77).
It is important to be noted that the Local Junction Boxes are installed on Deck of Corresponding Hold or Fore Peak Tank and the Main Junction Box Terminal should be installed on Upper Deck in the place where the Main Cable Line on Deck is ended.
Pipes Installation (Hold) : 1 or 1 Pipe is installed in each Cargo Hold in mid aft part (Refer to Pipe Diagrams) for Cable Protection. On Deck is not necessary the installation of Pipe because the Main Existing Cable Tube is used. It is important to be mentioned that the Intrinsically Safe Circuit Cables are considered from Local Junction Boxes (Zenner Barriers inside) until Sensors in Cargo Hold Area. Consequently the Cables from Local Junction Boxes until Main Junction Box Terminal and finally to Bridge Alarm System are considered as Safe Cables and must be Armored and Marine Type. In case that the Bulk Carrier comprises Tunnel the Cables can pass through Tunnel and the Pipe can be avoided.
Finally if the Vessel Comprises Tunnel then Deck Installation of J.Boxes is avoided.
Refer to Sensor operation inside Cargo Holds & Fore Peak Tank it should be noted that the measuring Range is from Inner Bottom until to Deck Top.
particles and sea water as representative of the range of cargos. [IACS 180 - 5].
BULK PROTECTOR Cargo Holds Water Ingress Monitoring & Alarm Detection System Cabling Procedure : The cables that are installed from Local Junction Boxes to Main junction Box is recommended to be 2x1mm2 or 2x1.5mm2 Armored and Marine Type. From Main Junction Box Terminal until the Monitoring & Alarm PLC System the cable that is used is 12x1mm2 or 12x1.5mm2. If the Bulk Carrier is until 4 Holds then 1 cable 12x1mm2 or 12x1.5mm2 is used. If the Bulk Carrier is from 5 9 Holds then 2 Cables 12x1mm2 are used. In all cases it is recommended to refer on Attached General Arrangement Installation Diagram Sheet 3. Monitoring & Alarm PLC System : The Monitoring & Alarm PLC System is supplied with Normal Supply 100-240V AC and Emergency Supply 24V DC. In particular Power Supply Module(10A) is comprised with input 100-240V AC and generates 24V DC (Stabilized). It is worthy to be noted that when the Normal supply 100-240V AC is cut off then automatically the power supply of the System changes from Normal into Emergency 24V DC. Furthermore Electric Fuses are included in order to implement circuit protection and Aux. Relays for automatic power supply change over procedure and furthermore in order to perform common alarm functions. The Main PLC System is able to perform Discrete & Analog I/O. The Display Bar Graph that is placed in Front is performing Monitoring, Alarm & Integrated Supervision of System.
