911 Conference: Learning the lessons of Sandy Hook

BY ED GEBERT
DHI Media Editor
egebert@timesbulletin.com

VAN WERT No one wants to

experience firsthand what the people
of Newtown, New Jersey, experienced. On that day, a disturbed young
man used a rifle to kill 20 elementary
children and six school staff members
before taking his own life.
Maureen Will experienced that
nightmare. She was the head of the
Emergency Communication Center
on Dec. 14, 2012, in Newtown,
Connecticut the day Sandy Hook
Elementary School was attacked by a
shooter bent on taking lives. Will came
to share her experiences and what
can be learned from what happened
with educators, emergency personnel
and law enforcement in a special presentation at Vantage Career Centers
Community Room on Wednesday.
Wills presentation, School
Shooting Lessons Learned concentrated on sharing information on
what happened that day from the
emergency dispatchers point of view.

Van Wert County Sheriff Tom Riggenbaugh addresses the crowd at the Van Wert County 911
Conference Wednesday at Vantage Career Center. The keynote speaker was Maureen Will
who headed the emergency communications efforts at the school shooting Dec. 14, 2012 in
Newtown, Connecticut. (DHI Media/Ed Gebert)

We talked about the after-effects

from the time the phone call came
in, up to today, Will said. What the
communications center went through,
what the town has gone through, and
what could happen if it were to happen
to you. Youve had a tornado. Youve
had an ambulance accident. So, its not
uncommon to have a mass-casualty
incident. But something the magnitude
of 12/14, nothing really prepares you
for it.
But preparing for the nightmare
that may never come was the aim of
the approximately 100 people who
attended the event.
I think the information that was
presented today has been very beneficial for everybody in here, noted Van
Wert County Sheriff Tom Riggenbach.
Certainly the focus has been on the
communications officers side of it and
the different things they would have
to deal with in this type of a situation,
and the different things that maybe not
much thought has been given to that
you might have to deal with.

Middle school launches new crossing guard program

Delphos Jefferson Middle School launched a new crossing guard program on Monday with volunteer seventh- and eighth-grade
student guards stationed at the corners of Jefferson and Third Streets assisting foot traffic after school. Safety has always been
a concern for the many students crossing at the intersections and the additional step will increase their safety. The crossing
guards wear neon orange vests and use Stop Sign poles to alert vehicles to stop and allow students to cross the road safely.
The school cautions drivers to be alert and cautious at the crosswalks and watch for the crossing guards. (DHI Media/Stephanie

Buzz and Ellen Ditto of The Carpenters Ministry are the coordinators behind the event and were excited at the response from
volunteers.
We want to thank everyone who helped make the event a
big success, Ellen Ditto said. There were many volunteers
who worked in the background preparing for this. They saved
pennies and containers for project materials, baked cookies and
rolls, washed dishes, performed secretarial duties, prepared and
provided food for meals and prayed daily.
Local businesses provided space for penny containers and
offered the use of rental equipment.
While 10 projects were completed, due to the weather, there
are still some painting, yard work and a wheelchair ramp to
be completed. A third workday on Oct 25 has been scheduled.

6-State Trooper
Project to kickoff this weekend
INFORMATION
SUBMITTED
COLUMBUS The Ohio
State Highway Patrol will join
forces with other members of
the 6-State Trooper Project in an
effort to reduce unsafe driving
behaviors. Troopers will target
safety belt, aggressive driving
and impaired motorists along
the Interstate 70 corridor. The
initiative will take place starting
at 12:01 a.m. Friday through
11:59 p.m. Sunday. This highvisibility enforcement effort
will include the Indiana State
Police, Pennsylvania State
Police and the Ohio State
Highway Patrol.
The Ohio State Highway
Patrol takes the crime of
impaired driving seriously,
said Colonel Paul Pride, Patrol
superintendent. Impaired driving is a crime that puts innocent
peoples lives in danger.
From 2009-13, there were
a total of 61 fatal crashes
on Interstate 70 in Ohio,
including 14 that involved an
impaired driver. So far this
year, there have been nine
fatal crashes, including three
that involved alcohol and/or
drugs on this stretch of road.
The Patrol is dedicated to
removing impaired drivers
from Ohio roads and increasing educational efforts related
to the importance of safety belt
usage. In addition, the agency
is committed to working with
law enforcement partners to
address traffic safety issues
and crime on our roadways.
The 6-State Trooper Project
includes the Ohio State
Highway Patrol, Kentucky State

Changes in the
farmland, part 1

That

by HELEN KAVERMAN

INFORMATION

Melvin and Alma Kloeppel are the

patriarch and matriarch of this neighborhood, which covers the southwest corner of Jennings Township
and Putnam County. Melvin has lived
all 94 years on the Kloeppel Farm,
about two miles north of Delphos.
Melvin and Alma were married in
1946 and moved into the house on
the hill. They raised six children on
the farm. Melvin is a graduate of Fort
Jennings High School. All their children graduated at Delphos Jefferson.
Now two of the Kloeppel boys do
the farming.
Melvin and Alma have seen many
changes in farming during their lifetime. The Kloeppel farm goes back
to when Fred Kloeppel Sr. bought the
farm in 1854. This farm is located on
State Route 190 near the Jennings
Creek. It is registered as an Ohio
Pioneer Farm. When Melvin started farming they were using horses
instead of a tractor and did not have
electricity and indoor plumbing.
Electricity came to their area in 1946,
after World War II. Melvin said they
got their first farm tractor in 1947. As
time went by, Melvin was one of the
first to get a self-propelled combine.
He did custom combining for other
farmers.
Melvin has seen the neighborhood change from all farming to
today when many businesses and
even industries dot the landscape.
This neighborhood (where I grew
up), reaches from the PutnamAllen
County Line on the south to lets say,
Road T-23 on the north. It is bordered
by the Miami Erie Canal on the west
and the northsouth section of U-20
on the east.
It was always an industrious
section of Jennings Township and
Putnam County. The first industry
in Jennings Township was the Esch
Distillery, located near the canal and
very near Delphos in Section 18 of
the township. Some historians called
it the Ash Distillery, but the owner/
operator was B. Esch, sort of pronounced Ash.
According to One Hundred Years
Along the Towpath (1951), Bernard
Esch, along with Ferdinand Bredeick
and Thomas Wrocklage were the first
to start the new settlement, now called
Delphos, at its chosen location on the
MiamiErie Canal. They were scouts
for Father Otto Bredeick, founder of
St. Johns Parish. At that time, the
whole east side of this future town
was part of Putnam County. Putnam
County reached all the way to State
Road on the south.
You will notice on the 1870 map,
that B. Esch is landowner of a large
portion of Section 18 in Jennings
Township. The later plat maps show
different land owners.

COLUMBUS The
change to Autumn in Ohio
brings wondrous colors but
also an annual increased
risk of deer-related crashes
and millions of dollars in
related damages, Lieutenant
Governor and Department
of Insurance Director Mary
Taylor said.
Taylor is asking Ohio drivers and motorcyclists to be
alert while navigating the
states roadways during this
peak season of deer activity.
There were eight deaths and
968 injuries were caused by
a total of 20,201 deer-vehicle
collisions in 2013, according
to the Ohio Department of
Public Safety.
Limiting
distractions
and being a focused motorist
are tools to help combat the
unpredictable tendencies of
deer, Taylor said. From a
financial perspective, now is
the time to contact your agent
to ensure you have adequate
insurance in the event you are
in an accident. The impact of
a deer-vehicle collision can
cost thousands of dollars to
repair.
Taylor added that drivers
should be extra cautious in
the morning and early evening.
Ohioans may not be aware
that the collision portion of
an insurance policys physical damage coverage does
not include deer-vehicle collisions. The other than collision or comprehensive coverage portion pays to repair this
type of damage. For consumers who only have a liability policy, any damage to the
vehicle would not be covered
by insurance.
Taylor asks Ohioans to
wear a seat belt as required by
state law and drive at a safe,
sensible speed, particularly
in areas with deer-crossing
signs. For more safety tips
on avoiding deer, visit the

industry should be the manufacture

of corn whiskey. There werent any
trained doctors in this new country.
The pioneers relied on quinine and
whiskey as a treatment of illnesses,
plus their enjoyment. Whiskey was
also used as an anesthetic and as an
antiseptic treatment for wounds and
injuries. According to a quote from
Imogene Elwer in History of Fort
Jennings, 18121976, According
to Frank Kriskamp, 91, of Delphos,
his father told him the owner had
a lead pipe from the building location to the road near the distillery,
where the liquor was loaded for distribution..However, 83-yearold John Fuerst of Delphos says the
owner was Bernard Esch According
to Elwer, When the government revenue officers were expected, weights
were put on the barrels of liquor, they
were sunk in the canal, and recovered
later.
Melvin was part of the neighborhood threshing rings. He recalled
one year when the last job for the
year was at Dick Grothauses farm.
The women always cooked up and
served wonderful dinners to the crew
each day. (This was the same for corn
husking.) When they finished the last
job of the season, it was customary
to get a keg of beer to top things off
after supper.
On this one night he remembers
Whimpy Allemeier, who lived over
on Bunker Hill (on road T-23) had
consumed a pretty good amount of
beer. When it was time to go home,
Dick offered to drive him home
but Whimpy said No! He could
get home with his team of horses.
Whimpy went on his way, taking a
short cut through Klimas Woods. He
had to cross the Flat Fork Creek in
the woods. Well, the horses jumped
the creek OK but the wagon didnt
make it. Whimpy had to ride one of
his horses home and came back to fix
the wagon the next day.
Melvin also recalled that old
Mr. Sefferneck had a still on his
farm, down along the canal, during
Prohibition days. Many farmers and
town people had a pretty good business at this extra occupation.
The farm land in this neck of the
woods is some of the best on Earth. J.
McLean Reed, the early president of
OSU, Lima once told a group of high
school students from Delphos, You
come from some of the most productive soil on Earth; your minds should
be just as productive! This area of
northwestern Ohio was once part of
the Great Black Swamp and before
that it was the sandy beach of Ancient
Lake Maumee, which was created by
the receding glaciers during the ice
age. The rich soil was created by the
rotting vegetation of the swamp and

The Vicar of Baghdad visits the Holocaust museum

The 5-year-old boy was named Andrew,

to honor the British priest who baptized him
at St. Georges Anglican Church in Baghdad.
When Islamic State forces moved into
Qaraqosh, the boys parents faced an agonizing choice that has become all too common in the ancient Christian towns of the
Nineveh Plain. The choice: Convert to Islam
or suffer the consequences.
Andrew was cut in half, his parents said,
while they were forced to watch.
The traumatized parents were later
reunited with Canon Andrew White, long
known as the vicar of Baghdad. This is
one of many stories he has been sharing with
journalists -- for years he acted as special
envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury -- in
an attempt to raise awareness of the hellish
details behind the now-familiar television
images.
A recent trip to Washington, D.C.,
brought him to the Holocaust Memorial
Museum, a setting that raised agonizing
questions about the massacres carried out by
the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria -- which
has claimed the power to establish a new
Islamic caliphate in the region.
White stressed that he would never compare this slaughter of Christians, Yazidis,
Shiite Muslims and believers in other religious minorities with the killing of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany during the

TERRY MATTINGLY

On
Religion
Holocaust, or Shoah.
The Shoah was the worst tragedy in
history, he said. Nevertheless, the word
genocide can be used to describe what is
happening because the fact is that an entire
religious minority is being removed from a
nation, they have been forced out.
We used to have one and a half million Christians in Iraq. Now, we may have
300,000. Thats all. There are more Christian
Iraqis in Chicago than there are in Iraq.
When I want to go see my community, I
go to Chicago. ... Now I am watching my
people who have fled Baghdad being massacred.
White arrived in Baghdad in 1998 and,
in addition to years of pastoral work and
diplomacy, he also created the interfaith
Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation
in the Middle East. Its director, Dr. Sarah
Ahmed, is a Muslim physician who was born

and raised in Iraq.

Events of the past few years have revealed
what pure hatred looks like when it is given
free reign, said Ahmed at the Holocaust
Museum. Tragically, local people and others
on the fringes of the Islamic State organization are committing some of the worst violence -- perhaps attempting to win favor with
their conquerors.
As a rule, young male refugees who
are captured are being killed or forced to
become soldiers for jihad, while many girls
are being raped and then sold as sex slaves
and no one is doing anything about it, she
said.
There are at least three levels of violence. The first demonstrates mere power
and greed, with mobs and soldiers driving
people out of their homes and businesses and
into the streams of refugees. According to
United Nations estimates, at least 1 million
Iraqis have been displaced during the past
four months.
The second level of everyday violence,
she said bluntly, is just shooting people.
On the third level, people move beyond
deadly violence into unbelievable acts of
terror. A Muslim who fled the fighting, said
Ahmed, told her one story about what happened to some Iraqi men who could not flee
fast enough. The Islamic State soldiers lay
them on the ground, after shooting them,

and then rolled over the bodies with a tractor

in front of their families, just to devastate
them.
White said those who survive are left
haunted by what they have seen and, in some
cases, what they themselves have done.
Recently, he said, one Christian father
contacted him in despair, even though his
children were still alive. In an all-too-familiar scene, ISIS leaders demanded that he
convert to Islam, rather than see his children
killed, or worse.
So this father said the words to convert
into Islam, said White, referring to the
familiar prayer, There is no god but Allah,
and Mohammad is the Messenger of God.
The father was crying on the phone ...
I said those words, but I still love Yeshua
(Jesus). I will never leave Yeshua. Will he
stop loving me now? I said, No, of course
not. You are still part of the Christian community, as you ever have been. You are still
one of us.

Hambleton
completes
jump school

Happy
Birthday

Alexandra M. Hambleton,
an Army Reserve Officers
Training Corps (ROTC) cadet
at Ohio University, Athens, has
graduated from the three-week
airborne training course, also
known as jump school, at the
U.S. Army Airborne School,
Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
The airborne school allows
the cadets attending host colleges and universities to earn their
jump wings. After completing
the course as qualified paratroopers, cadets return to their
college or university ROTC
program to pursue a commission as second lieutenants in the
Army.
During the first or ground
week of training, students
undergo a rigorous, progressive
physical training program and
receive instruction in the theory
of parachute jumping, safe landing falls, mock door exiting, and
wearing a parachute harness and
lateral drift apparatus.
The second or tower week
of training includes jumping
from a 34-foot tower, practical use of the swing landing
trainer, suspended harness apparatus, mock door mass exiting
procedures, and the 250-foot
free tower jump. In the final
or jump week, students complete five static-line parachute
jumps which includes one day
and one night jump off of a
C-130 and C-141 transport aircraft.
Hambleton is the daughter of Barbara K. and Carl W.
Hambleton of Elida and a 2012
graduate of Elida High School.

Strong rally lifts Lady Jeffcats by Pirates

By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor

DELPHOS Jefferson found itself
down 3-1 with 28:13 left in Thursdays
Northwest conference girls soccer tussle
versus Bluffton.
The Lady Jeffcats roared back, scoring three goals in the final 11:22 to seize
a 4-3 victory on a brilliant but cool afternoon at the St. Johns Annex.
The win gave four Wildcat seniors
present Elisabeth Miller, Arielle
Thompson, Kylee Haehn and Jordyn
Radler (Bailey Miller was out with an
injury) a win in their final regularseason home match.

and the girls really did that today. Even
down 3-1, we never hung our heads or
stopped playing and that comeback was
amazing, Jefferson coach Josiah Stober
acknowledged. We showed pure heart
today, scoring three goals in less that 12
minutes; we kept battling. Were beat
up right now with girls either out with
injuries or playing through them and we
had to go deeper into our bench and they
had to play more minutes.
Bluffton coach Joel Steinmetz has his
own injuries to deal with.
Our starting keeper Jadyn
Barhorst is out but Hannah did pretty
well. I just think we got tired because
we have a few others out or nursing
injuries, he added. We played well to
go up 3-1 but then we got a little com-

Bluffton had gained that 3-1 lead with
28:13 left on a goal by Anna Freditz.
The hosts began to go more on
the attack as if they got a second
wind after playing at Allen East the
night before and got within 3-2 at
11:22. Off a corner kick from the left

side, junior Logan Hamilton headed a

6-yarder off the crossbar but it remained

goal mouth, sophomore Arianna Knebel
got control on the right post and fired a
6-yarder inside that post past Conley (8
saves vs. 13 shots on-goal).

Jays contend with Sidney
Lehman Catholic, fall 2-0
By LIZ WINHOVER
SIDNEY The St. Johns
Lady Blue Jays traveled to
Sidney Lwhman Catholic for
Western Ohio Soccer League
girls action Thursday and fell
2-0.
The state-ranked Lady
Cavaliers won the coin toss
and chose the ball. They continually worked their way up
the field well but also ran into
the cement-wall Lady Blue
Jay defense.
However, LCs Ashley
Keller found the back of the
net with 33:19 showing in the
first half from the baseline
near the right post.
St. Johns senior netminder Samantha Wehriput on a
performance as she stopped
all but one of LCs 12 shots
on-goal the first half.
Later in the first half, she
came up with a great save
but collided with a Cavalier
forward.
In the second half, the St.
Johns defense played very
well in containing the Sidney
Lehman front line.
However, at the 29-minute mark, Sidney captain
Elizabeth edwards took a shot

right with them. I think this

was a very solid team performance tonight, St. Johns
coach Katrina Smith said.
We made it tough for a very
good offensive team and Sam
was brilliant in goal with 20
saves.
The Jays cleat up for the

Ryder Cup players get back to work on PGA Tour

Associated Press
NAPA, Calif. The new PGA Tour season felt like an old
one to a trio of Ryder Cup players Thursday at the Frys.com
Open.
Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar and Jimmy Walker met on
the 10th tee at Silverado. With a morning chill in the air and
beautiful scenery of Napa Valley, it was vaguely similar to
the rolling hills of Gleneagles just two weeks ago at the
Ryder Cup.
Except that no one was singing. There was hardly
anyone in the grandstand, or on the golf course.
Its a little strange off the tee when no one is really
here at 7:45, Mahan said after opening with a 2-under
70, leaving him four shots off the early lead. And out
there at 7, everyone is singing along and the party is
already started.
It was back to normal for those three Americans, along with
Lee Westwood of England, who played in the afternoon.
And it was another chance for Andres Gonzalez, who made
it back to the PGA Tour for the third time. He has yet to keep
his card, and while this was only the first round of the new
wraparound season, he was plenty happy with no bogeys on
his card and a 6-under 66.
The star attraction at the Frys.com Open was the Ryder Cup
trio and there were about 500 people tagging along the largest gallery at Silverado toward the end when the par-5 ninth
hole summed up their rounds.
Mahan lagged perfectly from 75 feet for a 2-putt birdie.
Kuchar showed off a sharp short game and his pitch from short
of the green struck the pin and settled about a foot away. He
shot 71. Walker thought his full wedge was perfect until it took
a hard hop and landed in a gnarly spot in the rough, leading to
a bogey and a 75.
Most of them would have preferred at least another week
off.
Walker is defending a title for the first time in his career.
Mahan and Kuchar are at the Frys.com Open as part of a
deal with the PGA Tour for letting them play an exhibition in
Turkey two years ago. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy also
were supposed to play this year until they deferred, McIlroy
because he was wiped out from a busy summer of winning
back-to-back majors, Woods while he tries to regain his explosiveness from back surgery earlier in the year.
The tour is in its second year of a wraparound season that
starts in October and ends with the Tour Championship in
September and its still hard to digest that everyone is starting
over at Silverado.

Its already a new year and Santa hasnt even come yet,
Stuart Appleby said after a 69. Ive just had a month off. I
dont know what happened to it, where it went.
Mahan knows the feeling better than anyone. This is his
10th event in the last 13 weeks, dating to the British Open. He
did not play the Wyndham Championship and had a week off
before and after the Ryder Cup.
The tour put the three American Ryder Cup players together and it felt like old times when Andy Sanders, Walkers
caddie, wore a Ryder Cup jacket to fight the chill.
In some ways, it was therapeutic to get back on the
course, even though it was a change from playing before
a gallery that stood 10-deep along the fairways to a gallery that could see across several fairways.
It was a little easier to move on considering that the
Ryder Cup wasnt terribly close. Europe built a 10-6
lead going into the final day at Gleneagles and while there was
an early surge of American red on the board, the outcome was
never really in doubt.
Walker kept pace with his teammates until he missed a
variety of putts a 5-footer for birdie that he barely tapped,
a 15-footer that defied gravity on the right edge of the cup and
a 3-foot par putt that he missed on No. 5, perhaps distracted by
the sound of the group ahead teeing off on the next hole when
he struck his putt.
2-man race headlines SAS Championship
CARY, N.C. Bernhard Langer is the prohibitive favorite
to win the Charles Schwab Cup. Colin Montgomerie says hes
figured out a way to catch him.
Both players are in the field for this weeks SAS
Championship and Montgomerie figures he needs to win two
of the final four Champions Tour events to make up the 633point deficit.
Montgomerie says hes got a lot to do to catch Bernhard.
The two will join Nick Faldo in one threesome at
Prestonwood Country Club.
Langer won here in 2012 and claimed the Schwab Cup in
2010. He says his previous victory here helps.
Defending Cup champion Kenny Perry is third in the standings but has fewer than half as many points as Montgomerie
does.
Perrys first Champions Tour win was here in 2011.
Russ Cochran, who is looking for his first victory on the
tour this season, won the event both last year and in 2010.
Other SAS winners in the field include Tom Pernice Jr. (09),
Mark Wiebe (07), Irwin (05) and Craig Stadler (04).
Also playing is Skip Kendall, who won the 1994 Web.com
Tour Carolina Classic on the course.

Royals, Orioles: A study

in contrasting offenses
By DAVID GINSBURG
Associated Press

BALTIMORE Speed versus

Power.
The surprising Kansas City Royals
and unflappable Baltimore Orioles are
extremely similar with one significant
exception: the fashion in which they
score runs. The team that best utilizes its standard method of offense will
likely win the best-of-7 AL
Championship Series, which
begins tonight.
Get ready for small ball versus long ball.
Back in April, few could
have predicted these two teams
would be the last standing in
the American League. But the
fashion in which they got here with
stunningly easy sweeps in the Division
Series makes this matchup intriguing.
Even more interesting is their contrasting styles.
The Royals love to take an extra
base, whether its turning a single into
a double or stealing their way into scoring position. Kansas City led the majors
with 153 stolen bases during the regular
season then, with blazing-fast rookie
Terrance Gore, added seven in a wildcard win over Oakland and five more in
a 3-game wipeout of the top-seeded Los
Angeles Angels.
Speed. Thats what we do, designated hitter Billy Butler said. Obviously
you have to be smart about it but were
a very aggressive team. When our speed
guys get on they like to go. Thats what
got us to this point that and pitching
and defense.
The Orioles, like the Royals, feature a
solid starting rotation, an effective bullpen and strong defense. But Baltimore
prefers to take a more leisurely trip
around the bases.
Although Baltimore finished dead
last in the majors with 44 stolen bases,

it led the majors with 211 home runs.

Nelson Cruz had 40 of them, only 55
fewer than the Royals hit while finishing
last in the big leagues as the only team
that didnt hit 100.
And so, the lines are drawn. Whichever
pitching staff can stifle the oppositions
preferred method of offense will likely be
working in the World Series.
Obviously, well be asked to keep the
Orioles in check in terms of their power
and the big inning, said Royals
right-hander Jeremy Guthrie,
who pitched for Baltimore from
2007-11. On the flip side, the
Orioles pitchers will be asked
to try and keep our guys off
base and not allow us to string
together a couple of hits to get
us runs.
Its really that simple.
The best way to keep them from stealing is to keep them off the bases. Thats
our first goal, Baltimore reliever Tommy
Hunter said. Im not too worried
about it. You know theyre fast, you
know they run. Hopefully they run
into outs.
That doesnt mean Kansas City
cant go deep, or the Orioles are
unable to run. Its just that each
team has adopted the style best suited
for its own stadium.
The Royals can hit home runs. They
just play in a big ballpark, Baltimore
center fielder Adam Jones said. Theyve
got guys who can drive the ball and
weve also got guys who can run. In
our ballpark it brings a different dynamic
because its smaller, in their ballpark, it
brings a different dynamic because its
bigger. But weve got some hairy guys
on our team. If were hitting in the Grand
Canyon, we can still put em out.
Cruz homered in the Orioles clinching win over Detroit on Sunday and just
a few hours later Eric Hosmer and Mike
Moustakas each contributed a two-run
shot in the Royals 8-3 win over L.A.

Home runs are definitely a difference-maker in the game, Butler said.

Thats what weve done in the playoffs.
Weve had home runs win games but
that hasnt been the way we won games
throughout the season. Still, theyre
good to have when you get them.
The pitching matchup today pits
Kansas Citys James Shields against
right-hander Chris Tillman. Shields is
11-7 lifetime against Baltimore, including 2-0 this season.
Shields chose not to explain his success against the Orioles except to say,
Its one of those things, I guess. I feel
like I can pitch good against any team on
any given day.
Kansas City hasnt reached the World
Series since 1985 and Baltimores dry
spell runs from 1983. After wearing the
underdog label in their last series, this
one looks to be a tossup.
I think its two great baseball teams going
up against each other, Moustakas said. It
doesnt really matter whos favored
or who is not.
Hosmer added, Both ballclubs are ready, both ballclubs
know the strength of their team
and both ballclubs have done
a good job of sticking to those
strengths.
The rosters are not required to be
submitted until today but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said his 25-man
list would not include slugger Chris
Davis, who is serving a 25-game suspension for amphetamine use and would
not be eligible until Game 6.

Browns offensive line has brains, brawn

By TOM WITHERS
Associated Press

BEREA The Browns offensive linemen dont wear

dorky glasses taped in the middle or pocket protectors. They
do protect the pocket, though.
Clevelands line, a collection of five book-smart, weighttrained athletes anchored by a Pro Bowl center who graduated from California-Berkeley and keeps The Thinkers
Thesaurus handy for reference in his locker, has paved the
way to the Browns solid start.
Theyre the brains and brawn of the Browns.
Just stand near them and listen to them to talk,
said first-year coach Mike Pettine. Theyre football
nerds. Thats all they talk about is football. They get
into some real in-depth conversations about it, and it
shows on the field. They work very well together. Its
a very intelligent group, and I think theyre very well
suited for the scheme.
The scheme.
Under new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, the
Browns switched to a zone-blocking scheme this season. It
can be a complicated system to learn with many details and
nuances. Pettine and his staff knew it would take time for the
Browns offensive line to become comfortable with something
so foreign.
They expected a steep learning curve. This group, though,
flattened it quickly.
Pettine said he didnt expect the line to come so far this
quickly.
But when you look at the group and just how smart they
are and how hard they work and the way they get coached,
looking back on it, its not a huge surprise, Pettine said. It
is safe to say that theyre further ahead of where we thought
they would be.
Through four games, Cleveland has the fourth-ranked rushing offense and the Browns already have more rushing touchdowns (5) than they had all last season (4). The offensive line
Mack, Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas, rookie left guard
Joel Bitonio, right guard John Greco and right tackle Mitchell

Schwartz has allowed just five sacks, giving quarterback

Brian Hoyer time to make plays and keeping him healthy.
According to profootballfocus.com, Cleveland has the
leagues top-rated offensive line.
Its good to hear that stuff, said Schwartz, another Cal
grad. But I dont look at it too much. Its pretty hard to figure
out the grading for us. Its obviously cool were up there, but
sometimes we dont know if were getting a plus or minus ourselves. Those sites do a really good job but its hard to evaluate
or put a quantitative grade on it. That being said, its very cool.
Schwartz is the one lineman with a nickname:
The Oracle.
He sees all and he knows all, joked Greco,
who switched to right guard after starting 13 games
at left last season. Hes never wrong and even
when he is, hell convince you hes right.
True to his well-read reputation, Schwartz sat at
his locker following Thursdays practice in front of
an open laptop computer while working on a crossword puzzle.
Schwartz was a bit of a puzzle last season, when his play was
harshly criticized. But to this point in 2014, the soft-spoken, 6-5,
320-pounder may be the teams most improved player.
Thomas didnt think his teammate played poorly. And just
like he protects Hoyers blindside, the perennial All-Pro had
Schwartzs back.
One of the main reasons for the success of the Browns
O-line has been continuity. Thomas (7,186), Mack (5,189) and
Schwartz (2,353) have never missed a snap as pros. The group
is also well-balanced with size on the ends, athletic guards and
a burly center with a beautiful mind.
To Greco, Mack is the groups nerve center.

NOTES: Pro Bowl CB Joe Haden (hip) missed his second day of practice,
increasing the chance hell miss Sundays game against the Steelers. If Hadens
out, undrafted rookies KWaun Williams and Robert Nelson could get extensive playing time. Starting LB Paul Kruger missed practice with a back injury. Following
Thursdays practice, the Browns listed Kruger as being out with a back injury. The
extent of Krugers injury is not yet known. Krugers loss would be a blow to the Browns
up front. The team will be without defensive end Phil Taylor, who underwent knee surgery earlier this week. Also, tackle Billy Winn has been slowed by a leg injury. Kruger
is having a strong second season with Cleveland, recording two sacks. He only had
4 sacks a year ago.

Kyle Busch takes pole at Charlotte as JGR surges

By JENNA FRYER
Associated Press
CONCORD, N.C. Kyle Busch
showed Joe Gibbs Racing may have
found some speed at just the right time
of the season with a pole-winning run
Thursday night at Charlotte Motor
Speedway.
Busch turned a lap at 197.390 mph
to earn the top starting spot for Saturday
nights race. Denny Hamlin, his JGR
teammate, qualified his Toyota third.
Wedged in the middle was Jeff Gordon
of Hendrick Motorsports, who went
197.217 to qualify his Chevrolet second.
Were edging our way to the top
but anything can happen in this game,
Busch said. Its a fickle business.
Youve got to take things one step at a
time.
Such is the nature of NASCARs
new elimination format in the Chase
for the Sprint Cup Championship. Four
drivers are eliminated every three races
and several top names are in trouble as
they head into the second race of the
second round. Six-time and defending
NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson,
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brad Keselowski
go into Saturday nights race needing
very strong runs to give themselves
breathing room headed into next weeks
elimination race at Talladega.
Two of the three failed to make it

into the final round of Thursday night

qualifying. Johnson, winner of the CocaCola 600 here in May, had to wave off
his first qualifying attempt and squeaked
into the second round with a late run.
He then failed to make it out of the
second round. Johnson will start 21st and
is ranked last in the 12-driver Chase field.
Just didnt have the
speed there on that final
run, Johnson said. Its
disappointing. Theres no
way around it.
Also surprising was that both
Keselowski and Joey Logano, two of
the top qualifiers all season, failed to
advance into the final round. Its only
the second time this season both Penske
cars have failed to make it to the final
round of qualifying.
Weve been off a little bit in qualifying trim since weve been here,
Keselowski said. But I thought our
race trim was really good in practice and
thats the most important thing so well
keep working.
Logano will start 13th with
Keselowski 17th. Logano won last week
to earn an automatic berth into the third
round and Keselowski was dominant in
the first round of the Chase but is currently ranked 10th in the field.
We are going to be all right in the
race, Logano said. This track is very
much on the razors edge. It takes just

a small mistake or the car being just a

little bit off to lose some time. Its fine
though. We can see the front of the field
and the car was good in race trim.
Earnhardt did make it into the final
round, along with three other championship-eligible drivers. Ryan Newman
qualified fifth, Kevin Harvick was seventh, Earnhardt was ninth
and Carl Edwards 10th.
It was a strong day for
Stewart-Haas Racing, which
spent two days testing at Charlotte last week.
Harvick, Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch were
among the fastest four drivers in Thursday
practice, and they showed their speed
throughout the three qualifying rounds.
Kurt Busch actually set the track
record with a lap at 198.771 mph in the
second round of qualifying. It broke
Hamlins record of 195.624 set in 2013
and was the fastest lap ever recorded on
a 1.5-mile track.
Kurt Busch will start 11th and
Harvick seventh. Stewart will lead the
SHR contingent from the fourth starting spot, his best qualifying effort in the
seven races hes entered since sitting out
three following the death of sprint car
driver Kevin Ward Jr.
Trevor Bayne failed to qualify for the
race. He was attempting to make it in an
extra car for Roush Fenway Racing, where
hell drive the No. 6 in the Sprint Cup
Series next season.

Hunter Pence thrives in

the strangeness of October
Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO As quirky as Hunter Pence is, this
time he really was off the wall.
Tongue wagging, a leaping Pence robbed Washingtons
Jayson Werth of extra bases, crashing back-first into the rightfield fence for one of the defining defensive plays so far this
postseason.
Pence is thrilled a bunch of San Francisco
fans got a close-up view of the grab. Several
of them were standing just a few feet behind
him in the fenced archway at AT&T Park on
Tuesday night as the Giants closed out the
Nationals in the NL Division Series.
Looking at the picture, thats what I think
is really awesome, Pence said. Im like, I wonder if any of
these people get to see this picture? I hope that its really cool
to them. Sharing a moment, I think my favorite part of what I
saw of the clip was the fans reaction. Im very grateful to be
a part of that.
On the road, the fans flock to him, too, albeit to playfully
mock him.
At Citi Field in New York, the Mets crowd poked fun at
him at every chance, waving signs such as Hunter Pence
Cant Parallel Park or Hunter Pence Eats Pizza With A
Fork.
With that odd throwing motion and unconventional stance
and swing, Pence is an easy target. Then again, a ball he hit
during the Giants run to the 2012 World Series championship
was something so strange, no one had seen anything like it.
The ball came off Pences broken bat three times on a single
swing and changed direction for a key 2-run double in a 9-0
victory against St. Louis in the Game 7 NL Championship
Series clincher.
These days, with another NLCS matchup against the
Cardinals on deck, Pence isnt getting pensive.
Everything thats happened in the past, its done, its history, he said. So, this is a new and separate experience in and
of itself. Its a tremendous honor and a privilege to take the
field with these guys.
Pence is as reliable for his antics and what manager Bruce
Bochy has called a unique style of hitting as he is for being
written into the lineup each day.
After Pence played every game in 2013 in his first full
season with the Giants and earned himself a new $90 million,
5-year contract, Bochy spoke of possibly giving him a rest on
occasion. But he wasnt held out of the starting lineup until
Game 161, and still played in all 162. Pence has appeared in
383 consecutive games.
With his unruly curly hair pulled back by a black headband
or tucked into his LINCECUM KNOWS cap, the 31-yearold Pence earned his third All-Star nod this year. He batted
.277 with 20 home runs and 74 RBIs.
A health nut who feasts on kale salad and raw veggies,
Pence helped inspire an edible garden behind the center-field
fence thats believed to be the first of its kind in pro sports.
Pence took the high road in May when his beloved custom
motor scooter his transportation to and from games went
missing. He got it back after announcing there would be no
hard feelings and promising to gift a signed bobblehead (of
him on the scooter, of course) as a reward if his ride was
returned.
Pence often gathers his teammates together to let them
know how proud he is to be part of this group for another
special October.
When the Giants sealed a spot in the NL wild-card game,
Pence provided an expletive-filled speech he later apologized for the salty language getting aired congratulating the
Giants for hanging in through the injuries, doubts and skids.
He also asked the home fans if they wanted another game by
the bay, receiving a resounding YES! YES! YES! That has
become the clubs postseason mantra.
Carpenter leads Cardinals power surge into NLCS
ST. LOUIS Matt Carpenter became a high-end leadoff
man because of his smarts, production and ability to work
counts.
Now, add bat to be feared.
The lefty swinging third baseman led the St. Louis Cardinals
sudden power surge in the NL Division Series, ending some of
the chatter about the teams season-long, long-ball shortage.

Report: Many not punished NASCAR-Sprint
of America 500 Lineup
for domestic violence
Associated Press
Former Chicago general manager Jerry
Angelo said NFL teams didnt discipline
players in hundreds and hundreds of
domestic violence incidents during his
30-year career, USA Today reported
Thursday.
I made a mistake, Angelo told the
newspaper (http://usat.ly/1ydbFxX). I
was human. I was part of it. Im not proud
of it.
Angelo was the Bears general manager from 2001-11. He entered the league
as a scout with Dallas in 1980, worked
as a scout for the New York Giants from
1982-86 and was Tampa Bays director
of player personnel for Tampa Bay from
1987 to 2001.
We knew it was wrong, Angelo told
USA Today. For whatever reason, it
just kind of got glossed over. Im no psychiatrist, so I cant really get into what that
part of it is. Im just telling you how I was.
Ive got to look at myself first. And I was
part of that, but I didnt stand alone.
On Wednesday, Commissioner Roger
Goodell met with the full body of NFL
owners for the first time since several
missteps by the league involving personal
conduct incidents. The agenda was filled
with discussion of domestic violence and
discipline for misbehavior.
Our business is to win games, Angelo
said. Weve got to win games and the
commissioners job is to make sure the
credibility of the National Football League
is held in the highest esteem. But to start
with that, you have to know whos representing the shield. We got our priorities a
little out of order.
NFLPA presidents recognize patient
approach
NEW YORK When Roger Goodell
and several NFL owners were asked
Wednesday how long a revamping of
the NFLs personal conduct policy would
take, they preached patience.
Three men who have led the players

union must have been nodding their heads

in agreement.
Current NFLPA leader Eric Winston
and past presidents Kevin Mawae and
Domonique Foxworth say that has
always been the unions approach since
DeMaurice Smith became executive
director in 2009. They believe its the only
way to do business.
Issues are seldom black and
white, which is why the long
process needs to be in place,
whether its a drug policy or
bounties or whatever it might
be, says Winston, who took
over as union president this year
after eight NFL seasons. It goes
to the approach of educating our
players; sometimes from outside these look like quick fixes
and they are not. It requires a lot of thinking and education and time.
The union, of course, has a deep interest in any alterations to the leagues conduct policy because those changes would
affect all 1,800 active members.
All three men suggest the best way
to a new and more effective personal
conduct policy and how discipline is
handled is through negotiations. And
yes, if those negotiations take a while,
thats just fine.
When it comes to this key issue in the
NFL, the only way to get an effectively
bargained situation done or pass a personal conduct policy for everyone is out
of collective bargaining with those who
have the power to make decisions, says
Mawae, a former All-Pro center who was
union president from 2008-12.
Goodell did not rule out such an
approach, saying everything is on the
table. He did say during the owners
meetings, Weve had meetings with the
union, weve discussed alternatives.
Mawae adds it is imperative that a
revamped player conduct policy and
particularly the commissioners role in
handing out punishment be reached the

a team Breece Rohr led the way
with a 25th-place finish with a new PR
of 21:07. Also setting new PRs were
Baylee Lindeman (67h in 23:10 and
Lexi Pohlman (73rd in 23:32),with Sam
Stevenson 132nd (27:27).
Overall we ran very well with almost
everybody setting a new PR, St. Johns
coach Steve Hellman noted. I know
Curtis is a little disappointed with his
place. He was hoping to be top 12 to get
named 1st-team all-league. I told him
now we need to focus on District. Just as
in other sports, the MAC is just as competive and we see that with the excellent
times ran tonight. But now we will focus
on districts to see if we can get Curtis
and Breece to regionals.

Tigers maul Blue Jays

VERSAILLES The Midwest
Athletic Conference is gain well represented in the 6th weekly OHSVCA
Volleyball state poll with five teams getting high ranks.
St. Johns invaded Division IIIs top
team, the Versailles Tigers, Thursday
night and the ride home was even longer
after a 25-11, 25-9, 25-15 defeat.
Versailles is definitely the best, most
dominant team that we played all year is
how Blue Jay coach Carolyn Dammeyer
described her opponent.
The Tigers scored the first four points
of the match before Maddie Buettner got
the Jays on the board with a kill with
the assist by Colleen Schulte. Versailles
rolled with kills by Lauren Bruns and
Taylor Winner along with four slams by
Christa Puthoff to open a 11-3 lead. St.
Johns finally scored again with an assist

same way the 2011 collective bargaining

agreement was done. And that took more
than four months to put together once the
lockout began in March that year.
The league and particularly Goodell
have been accused of lacking transparency in their handling of the Ray Rice
case. Through the union, Rice currently is
appealing his indefinite suspension handed out after he originally was
given a 2-game ban. Goodell
subsequently admitted that punishment was wrong and the
league toughened discipline for
personal misconduct. Goodell
changed Rices suspension once
a video of Rice punching his
then-fiancee in a casino elevator
was released publicly, citing the
video as new evidence.
Some have criticized the union for carrying out the appeal.
We have a responsibility to support
those guys, even the ones who make
bad decisions, says Foxworth, the union
president from 2012-14 and a defensive
back in the NFL for six years.
A neutral arbitrator, Judge Barbara
S. Jones, is hearing the appeal and the
NFLPA wants that to be the procedure
going forward in all cases involving
league discipline.
Part of the reason we got into the
position where we were seeking neutral
arbitration was because the image of the
players is very important to our players, Foxworth says. We know how
poor decisions can color the way society
sees us all.
Winston, Mawae and Foxworth all
mention the Saints bounties suspensions
in 2012 as being a rush to judgment on
the leagues part. Former Commissioner
Paul Tagliabue, appointed by Goodell
to handle player appeals in the matter,
threw out all discipline imposed on
linebackers Jonathan Vilma and Scott
Fujita, and defensive ends Anthony
Hargrove and Will Smith.

by Maya Gerker to Madison Ellis for the

kill. The Blue Jays tried to rally but great
defense by Versailles as Winner had 3
blocks alone on a single volley crippled
St. Johns. The Blue Jays did get a kill
from Maddie Pohlman but could get no
closer as they dropped the first set by 14.
The second set was exactly like the
first as the Tigers scored often to lead
11-4. A great dig by Gerker lead to a
point for the Jays and St. Johns scored
later on a kill by Pohlman with the assist
by Gerker but the Tigers lead had grown
to 21-7. A soft tip by Jessica Geise was
the last offensive point of the set for the
Jays as the offensive output was held to
single digits by the Tigers defense.
Buettners kill in the third set opened
the scoring for the Jays and she followed up with great defense on a block.
An ace by freshman Elle Csukker along
with a Pohlman kill gave St. Johns their

first lead of the evening as Versailles

called timeout. Another kill by Pohlman
(Csukker assist) and Geise (Samantha
Kramer assist) gave the Blue Jays a two
point lead. Versailles rallied with a 8-0
run before a kill by Buetter with the set
by Kramer ended the streak. The pair
hooked up again later for another score
but the Tigers lead was 20-14 by then.
An ace by Csukker was the last point of
the night scored by the Jays as they lost
the match 3-0.
Top hitters for St. Johns: Pohlman (6
kills), Geise (4 kills, 4 blocks), Buettner
(4 kills, 5 blocks), Schulte (8 assists),
Csukker (5 assists), Kramer (5 assists)
and Kestley Hulihan (11 digs).
St. Johns will begin sectional tournament action at home on Thursday against
Lima Temple Christian at 6 p.m.

Steelers have swept two-game season
series with Browns 10 times since 2000.
Steelers are 26-5 vs. Browns since
1999. Steelers WR Antonio Brown
leads NFL with eight plays of 25 yards
or more through Week 5. Roethlisberger
also leads with 12 such plays. Brown
has 21 consecutive games with 5 catches, 50 yards receiving league mark.
RB LeVeon Bell second in league
with 460 yards rushing After facing
Browns, Steelers play next three games
at home. Browns set NFL record last
week by rallying from 25-point deficit
to win. No road team in regular season
had overcome bigger disadvantage.
Browns have just one turnover, a league
low. QB Brian Hoyer improved to 5-2
as starter last week and has three
comeback victories. Hoyer threw
interception last week, snapping streak
of 189 passes without pick. Browns
have scored at least 21 points in first
four games for first time since 1969.
Browns averaging 16.8 points in
second half. Browns kickoff coverage team leads league in opposing
field position. RB Ben Tate returned
from knee injury last week and gained
career-high 123 yards. Pro Bowl CB
Joe Haden was limited this week with
hip injury.

The Cardinals hit 105 homers during the season, second-fewest in the
majors ahead of only the cross-state
Royals, also still playing this October.
St. Louis belted seven against the
Dodgers, with Carpenter connecting
in three straight games.
The homers accounted for 13 of
the Cardinals 18 runs in the fourgame series.
Yeah, weve heard a lot about
that this season, the lack of homers,
manager Mike Matheny said. Weve
got guys who can do it but were still
not preaching it.
Theyre just taking good at-bats,
and when they do the balls going to
jump out from time to time.
Carpenter totaled eight home runs
in the regular season, none of them
in consecutive games, before joining
Albert Pujols as the lone Cardinals

(Continued from page 6)

The Wildcats tied it at 3-3 at 9:46. Hamilton,
from the back line, launched a long lead pass
to the speedy Knebel on the right side, who
was first to the orb. She pushed it forward and
as she got inside the 18, the keeper came off
her line and Knebel slid the ball underneath
into the left side of the net from 10 yards.
The Lady Pirates (4-11-1, 2-3 NWC) had a
couple of chances to untie the score but either
were off the mark or Jefferson (9-5-2, 4-1
NWC) junior keeper Jessica Pimpas got a big
stop at 2:23 when she denied a 22-yarder by
Brooke Koontz.
The hosts had one effort denied at 2:49:
Haehns 25-yarder.
However, with just 34 ticks left, they got
the match-winner. Knebel, well out on the
right side, launched a cross pass and found
freshman Kendall Marquiss on the right post;
her 9-yarder found the left side for a 4-3 edge.
Both teams battled on relatively even terms
the first half after the visitors had the better of
the proceedings early.
Among the better of the tries for the Pirates

player to homer in three successive

postseason games. The feat is all the
more exceptional given all three came
in lefty-lefty matchups.
Carpenter led the Cardinals with
seven RBIs in the series. He said the
key is staying in there to be
able to reach the breaking
balls heading for the other
side of the plate.
Carpenters consistent,
intensely-focused approach
reminds Matheny of Pujols in
his prime.
I think its a confidence thing,
too, Carpenter said. For the most
part, the overall theme is you want to
stay on them and try to use the whole
field.
Left-handed batters hit five homers
off Dodgers lefties in the series after
totaling eight during the season. Matt
Adams had the biggest of the five, hitting a go-ahead 3-run shot off likely

came at 35:06 when Sarah Theisen let loose

from the left wing and her 17-yarder hit off
the bar and ricocheted off Pimpas; a defender
kicked the orb out of danger.
The visitors went up 1-0 at 15:57. Kelli
Leugers got an open chance outside the right
post and slipped a 14-yarder past the keeper
and into the left side.
The Wildcats tied it at 1-1 at the 1:21 mark.
Off a lead pass by Haehn, Knebel got on a
good run down the right side, got within 10
yards and went low to the left, hitting the left
post and into the net.
Just 56 ticks into the second half, the visitors went up 2-1. Off a cross pass from the left
side by Koontz, Abbie Parkins headed it up and
to herself, used her body to control the ball and
1-touched it from seven yards to the right side.
It became 3-1 at 28:13. Off a short lead
pass into the box from Theisen, Parkins got
control in the center and wrong-footed Pimpas
to the right, with Pimpas not quite able to prevent the 12-yarder from crossing the goal line.
Both teams open Division III Sectional play
5 p.m. Tuesday: Jefferson back at the Annex
versus Ottoville and Bluffton at Riverdale.

NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton

Kershaw in the clinching Game 4.
Adams batted .190 with three
homers and 15 RBIs against lefties.
His extra work paid off in the clutch.
He had to be prepared for Kershaw
and lefty relievers.
Matt Holliday and rookies Kolten Wong and Randal
Grichuk also connected in
the series. Cleanup man
Jhonny Peralta set a franchise record with 21 homers
by a shortstop and Holliday had 20 in
the regular season, but the only two
others in double figures were Adams
with 15 and Wong with 12.
The Cardinals have been on a
homer decline since totaling 162 in
their 2011 World Series title season,
with 37 from Pujols and 31 from
Lance Berkman. They had 159 in
2012, getting 32 from Carlos Beltran
and four others belting 20 or more.

Last year, they sunk to 125, led by 24

from Beltran.
Carpenter took Kershaw deep in
Game 1 to begin St. Louis climb
out of a five-run deficit, tied it in the
eighth of Game 2 with a two-run shot
off reliever J.P. Howell and homered
off Hyun-Jim Ryu in Game 3.
Hell be facing another lefty,
Madison Bumgarner, in the NLCS
opener Saturday.
Carpenter was a first-time All-Star
in 2013 and led the majors in runs
(126), hits (199), doubles (55) and
multi-hit games (63). His signature
hit came in the NLCS Game 6 clincher, when he doubled off Kershaw to
end an 11-pitch at-bat and start the
go-ahead rally.
His numbers fell off across the
board a bit this year but he again was
an All-Star and led the NL with 95
walks while batting .272 with a .375
on-base percentage.

More than the stars shine

brightly in the state of Texas
DEAR
ABBY:
I am an adult
heterosexual
male
who has discovered
that I like wearing
nail polish. I feel
it should not be a
matter of gender, but
of taste and fashion.
I wore a reasonably
bold color in public
for the first time a
week before last. It
was a light, metallic
blue that changes to
green in the sunlight.
I got a few raised
eyebrows and a few
compliments in my
conservative, small
town. I was told,
however, to leave
the color red to the
ladies.
I know some
companies
are
already
marketing
nail color for men,
and I hope nail decor
for both genders
will one day become
mainstream. I want
to help that process
along. What do
you think, Abby?
-- SHOWIN MY

D
E

R
S H O W I N :
Although over the
last few years I have
seen males wear
nail polish, it was
usually a very dark
color and the wearer
was a rock star or
a Goth. Frankly, I
think that for an adult
heterosexual male to
wear light blue nail
polish in public in the
great state of Texas
shows he is not only
a trendsetter, but also

has a lot of guts.

DEAR
ABBY:
Im a 38-year-old
woman who divorced
four years ago. Im
educated, attractive
and have a successful
career. My 18-yearold son lives with me
and attends a junior
college.
I am having a hard
time finding romance
because most of the
men want to survive
on my income, or are
put off that I have a
son at home.
I recently met a
guy who seems to
be head over heels in
love with me. He has
had little education
and abused drugs
and alcohol for a
long time, but he has
changed now. He
has three children,
but because he is
unemployed,
hes
exempt from paying
alimony, and he is
fine with the idea.
Hed like to have
them on weekends,
but the mother wont
allow it.
Should I go ahead
and date him? He
doesnt seem to mind
that I have a child,
but my intuition tells
me he may be another
fortune hunter. How
can I find a suitable
partner
without
appearing desperate?

NETHERLANDS

LADY: Listen to
your intuition and

Dow plunges
334, its worst
day of 2014
NEW YORK (AP) The
stock market had its worst day
of the year Thursday, just 24
hours after recording its best.
The Dow Jones industrial
average plunged 334 points
as falling energy stocks and
worries about the global economy sent investors fleeing out
of the market. The blue-chip
index rose 275 points the day
before.
For three years, U.S. investors have enjoyed a stock market that has, for the most part,
quietly and steadily moved
higher. The pleasure cruise
appears to be over.
Market volatility is back
and in a big way, market
observers say. The stock market hasnt seen day-to-day
movements like this since
August 2011, when Standard
& Poors downgraded the
United States credit rating.
The S&P downgrade subsequently pushed the U.S.
stock market into its last
correction, a technical
term for when stocks fall
10 percent or more from a
recent peak.
Investors are not conditioned for this type of market
after three good years, said
Dean Junkans, chief investment officer for Wells Fargo
Private Bank. Weve been
long overdue for a correction.

Toledo nervously awaiting

fate of beloved Jeep
TOLEDO (AP) The thought of losing the Jeep Wrangler a direct descendant of the original olive-drab vehicle that
rolled off the assembly line in Toledo on
its way to the battlefields of World War
II feels a little bit like losing a family
member to those who have spent generations on the factory floor.
Word that Chrysler is considering moving production of the Wrangler elsewhere
so that the famously rugged vehicle can
be constructed with an aluminum body to
meet new government gas-mileage standards has triggered feelings of anger,
betrayal and despair in this Midwestern
industrial city.
Its not an unsurmountable blow,
but its a blow to our pride, said Ron
Szymanski, who retired after making
Jeeps for 35 years and later was curator of
a collection of Jeep memorabilia.
Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne surprised everyone last week when he said
that reconfiguring the Wrangler assembly
line in Toledo to handle the new design
coming out in about three years would
be so outrageously expensive as to be
impossible.
Automakers are increasingly looking
at lightweight aluminum as an alternative
to steel to meet the governments goal of
nearly doubling average fuel economy to
54 miles per gallon by 2025.
The assembly complex in Toledo,
which employs about 6,000 workers,
isnt in danger of shutting down even if
the Wrangler goes away. It still makes
the more-citified, more family-friendly
Jeep Cherokee, and Marchionne said the

employment level would be kept steady,

most likely by bringing in a new vehicle
to build.
But theres a question of whether a new
vehicle could match the Wrangler in sales.
The plant the only one in the world
building the Wrangler is on pace to
make 240,000 this year.
And many assembly-line workers, like
many Wrangler owners, have deep affection for the Wrangler because of the tough,
utilitarian design that still closely resembles the military version and makes it ideal
for off-roading.
To lose our Jeep, thats almost like
sacred. You cant do that, said Jennifer
Wherry, one of nearly three dozen in her
family who have built Jeeps over the
years.
Jeeps origins in Toledo go back to
1941, when Willys-Overland Motors
began mass production of the vehicle for
the military. As the war neared its end,
the company began making the Jeep CJ
for the public. It kept rolling off the line
in Toledo until the Wrangler came along
in 1987. Those first Wranglers were built
in Canada before production returned to
Toledo in 1993.
The Jeep brand changed hands repeatedly over the years, with Chrysler buying
it out from American Motors Corp. in
1987.
What hurts Toledos chances of keeping the Wrangler is its popularity. Shutting
down production for six months to retool
could cost $1 billion in sales, said Bruce
Baumhower, president of the United Auto
Workers local.

Obama wants an election about the economy, not him

DARLENE SUPERVILLE
Associated Press
SANTA MONICA, Calif.
President Barack Obama is all in with
his economic pitch. The American public is not. Over the next 27 days, either
the public or the president is going to get
the message.
In a midterm campaign strategy
fraught with risk, the White House is
betting that Obamas tight embrace of
the economic recovery and populist proposals for gender pay equity and a
higher minimum wage will galvanize
his core supporters and persuade fencesitting independents to help Democrats
retain narrow control of the Senate in
November.
Addressing young entrepreneurs
Thursday at a startup center in California,
Obama highlighted his economic record
for the third time in eight days.
A lot of you entered into the workforce during the worst financial crisis
and then the worst recession since the

Great Depression, he told the gathering of mostly millennials, those born

after 1980. You are coming out of this
recession with the best educated, most
diverse, most digitally fluent generation
in American history.
While noting that hes not on the ballot in this election, Obama has become
fond of saying that his policies are at
stake. The line has prompted a reflexive
flinch from Democrats who are trying
to fend off a concerted Republican campaign to link Democratic opponents to
the president.
For Democrats, the problem is not
Obamas message; its the pitchman.
The messenger is not the most popular guy on the planet right now, said
Democratic pollster Mark Mellman.
Public opinion polls show substantial
support for Obamas proposals to raise
the minimum wage, seek pay equity for
women and close corporate tax loopholes. But on the economic issues hes
most associated with the fitful recovery from the Great Recession and his

health care law the American public

is not with him.
A September AP-GfK poll found 40
percent approve and 58 percent disapprove of his handling of the economy,
and that 41 percent approve and 58 percent disapprove of his handling of health
care. Overall, Obamas national approval ratings are 44 percent, compared to
51 percent who disapprove, according to
the latest numbers from Gallup.
That said, Obama does have an
economic story to tell. Unemployment
has dropped from a high of 10 percent
in 2009 to 5.9 percent last month. The
economy grew last quarter at a better
clip than many expected. The stock
market has rallied to record highs.
He inherited a federal deficit of more
than a trillion dollars; the deficit has
been cut by more than half to $486
billion.
But, to the frustration of the White
House, that message hasnt gained much
traction against a headwind of nearly
stagnant wage growth.

Flavors fuel food industry, but remain a mystery

NEW YORK (AP) They help give Coke its distinctive
bite and Doritos its cheesy kick. But the artificial and natural
flavors used to rev up the taste of processed foods remain a
mystery to most Americans.
Artificial and natural flavors have become ubiquitous
terms on food labels, helping create vivid tastes that would
otherwise be lost in mass production. As the science behind
them advances, however, some are calling for greater transparency about their safety and ingredients.
Last month, five consumer and environmental groups
sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration expressing
their concern about the flavor industry, which determines the
safety of its own ingredients. The letter noted that safety is
sometimes declared based on scientific data that isnt publicly
available.
If were eating the stuff, it shouldnt be such a secret,
said Lisa Lefferts, senior scientist at Center for Science in the
Public Interest, a nutrition advocacy group that was among
those who sent the letter.
The call for more transparency comes as Americans pay
closer attention to what they eat. In some cases, theyre petitioning companies to remove chemicals. Many food scientists
say the fears are unfounded because the unfamiliar ingredients
often just mimic chemical structures found in nature or are
used in trace amounts. But complaints have prompted companies including PepsiCo and Subway to reformulate recipes.
As a result of the attention given to chemicals and ingredi-

Lessons

(Continued from page 1)

Van Wert County 911 Coordinator Kim

Brandt reported, The comments that Ive
heard so far are that eyes are opened and
people are thinking about things that maybe
hadnt crossed their minds previously. We
try to have our plans in place what to
do in this event or that event but when
you see the photos of what it looked like in
Newtown, it really makes you think.
Will pointed out that the lessons
learned in Newtown can help anybody
involved in an emergency situation.
From what I was told by some of
the staff in here, they can use it for
just about everything, she emphasized.
You know, the script we used with the
media, how we handled incident command, how we were able to coordinate
the things that came into the center
logistics. Everything does go right
through dispatch. And with dispatch,
our minds could be our worst enemy
because we envision what is happening,

ents as a whole, artificial and flavors are starting to get attention as well. But they can be frustrating because people often
have no clue whats in them.
Natural flavors can mean whatever, said Sara Budowsky,
a New York City resident who runs a vegan eating website and
has become more aware added flavors. Ive always been curious when I see that last part of the ingredient list.
INVISIBLE INGREDIENT
The FDA says natural flavors have to be derived from
ingredients like fruit, meat or spices, and obtained through
processes like distillation or fermentation. Artificial flavors
can be made chemically, say, by mixing an alcohol with a fat.
It seems straightforward, but the sophistication involved
in making them varies broadly. Some may just be a blend of
spices, while others create the illusion that a product contains
certain ingredients, like grapes. Flavors can also conjure cooking styles.
With frozen dinners, for instance, natural flavors are
often used to give the impression the meat was grilled or
roasted.
A company cant grill all that meat, said Terry Miesle,
a senior flavorist who specializes in savory tastes at Innova
Flavors in the Chicago area. But flavors can mimic the
chemical process of cooking.
A flavorist might use materials like beef stock, fats and
sugar to ignite the reactions to create the grilled taste, he
said.

when in fact it could be something different. But we try to anticipate what the
officers or the responders need. So its
important for them to know what is happening on the other end.
Aside from going through the dispatchers perspective in an incident,
attendees of the 911 Conference also
heard presentations on workplace violence and the use of K-9s in many situations.
As for Will, she is proud of the way
her staff in Newtown handed the situation on Dec. 14, 2014.
I learned I have a very strong staff,
and they took their training to heart,
she concluded. They sucked it up, put
their big boy and big girl pants on, took
that deep breath, and they did what
every single dispatcher across this country does everyday. They hold peoples
lives in their hands, and they took good
care of those people. I have no regrets.
My staff did their job, and they did it
extremely well.

Brandt said she is glad she was able

to give the local dispatchers and others
the opportunity to hear from Will.
What she brought that we can take
home is that it did happen and it can
happen, and we never know where the
next place could be, Brandt observed.
She said there have been 77 school
shootings since Sandy Hook, so none
of us knows where it could happen
next, so we get the training, and what
she brings is very valuable information.
Riggenbach said, It provides a lot
of thought into things that make sense.
Certainly there are going to be things
that you hadnt given thought to have
to deal with, so it gives you things
you have to take a look at operationally and policy-wise to be able to
better prepare your staff to deal with
something like this. The preparation
and training are things that are really
important and you hope you never
have to use it.

St. Louis shooting reignites

anger among activists
ST. LOUIS (AP) Two
months after a Ferguson officer killed Michael Brown,
setting off intense national
debate about law enforcement treatment of minorities,
the shooting death of another
black 18-year-old by police in
nearby St. Louis has reignited
anger among activists already
planning weekend protests.
Police say Vonderrit D.
Myers was shot Wednesday
after he opened fire on a white,
off-duty officer, but Myers
parents say he was unarmed.
Some activists and lawmakers say Myers was targeted
because he was black and are
asking the Justice Department
which has opened a civil
rights investigation into the
death of Brown, who was
unarmed to investigate his
shooting.
This here was racial profiling turned deadly, said
state Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, a
St. Louis Democrat.
The shooting happened as
activists and other protesters
from around the country prepared for four days of rallies,

marches and protests over the

Brown shooting. Organizers
say the events, which start
today and include a march
Saturday in downtown St.
Louis, have taken on added
urgency.
This is a racial powder
keg, said Jerryl Christmas,
a St. Louis attorney who was
among more than 20 black
leaders who joined Nasheed at
a news conference Thursday
outside police headquarters.
All this is going to do is
escalate the situation.
Browns Aug. 9 death
spurred weeks of unrest in
Ferguson and the rest of the
St. Louis area. A state grand
jury is deciding whether the
officer who shot him, Darren
Wilson, will face charges.
Police say Myers was both
armed and aggressive, using
a stolen 9 mm gun to shoot at
the officer.
Syreeta Myers said her son
was holding a sandwich, not
a gun. Police lie. They lied
about Michael Brown, too,
she told The Associated Press
by phone Thursday.

Training changes as US
troops head to West Africa
FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) Forgoing combat rifles and
body armor, U.S. troops preparing to fight Ebola in Liberia
were instead stepping gingerly Thursday into white germproof suits and pulling on thick, blue rubber gloves and gas
masks.
About 500 soldiers were doing three days of infectious
disease training inside a concrete-floored building on Texas
sprawling Fort Hood getting ready to join as many as 3,900
troops nationwide authorized to go to areas affected by the
virus.
Army medical personnel will treat patients who have Ebola
while engineers plan to build temporary medical centers. How
long theyll be deployed is unclear.
It feels a bit like the tire man, or a marshmallow,
trainer John McGuffin joked as a group of Army soldiers tottered about in suits resembling billowy hospital gowns.
Dispatched from the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute
of Infectious Diseases in Maryland, McGuffin offered tips on
spotting Ebola symptoms, then had troops work in pairs to correctly don protective gear.
Were going to check each other, McGuffin said. If we
have a tear in the suit, were going to first remain calm. Were
going to remove ourselves from a potentially infectious area,
and then were going to hit everything with disinfectant.
The soldiers learned they should step forward, not backward, when removing suits, and clean masks and rubber gloves
with alcohol wipes. Duct tape, they were told, works well to
seal sleeves to gloves.
Outbreak fears werent overt, but there was some nervousness. While Ebola-related training is similar to chemical warfare instruction many troops have had previously, its a far cry
from battlefield or counterterrorism missions.
I think theres some apprehension here, of course, said
Col. Heath Roscoe, commander of the 36th Engineer Brigade,
one of three Liberia-bound units from Fort Hood.
To assuage fears, he held a meeting Monday with troops
and their families where surgeons fielded questions not only
about safety in Liberia but potential risks to relatives once their
loved ones come home.
Weve seen some other folks, American doctors who got
it, were flown back, and Im pretty confident that our leaders will make sure that happens with our soldiers if they are
stricken with Ebola, Roscoe said.
The disease has killed thousands globally, and a Liberian
man in a Dallas hospital who became the first confirmed U.S.
case of the virus died Wednesday.
