17. TRAFFIC
Means of public transport include buses, trams, trolleybuses and underground trains. People
travel by bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, car, taxi, camper, bus, tram, trolleybus, underground train,
plane, ship, boat and ocean liners. Goods are transported by van, lorry, truck, plane, ship, boat
and ferry.
I usually go everywhere by car. As my husband starts with the work very early, I have to take my
son to the kindergarten, and later to the school. I drive a day about half an hour. From Spring till
September, if the weather is good, I ride a bicycle to work. It is very enjoyable for me, because I
can listen to my favourite music. This tour takes me twenty minutes there and back.
I think, the fastest type is the underground, though in Hungary you can find it only in the capital. It
is also the most comfortable, because it is fast, it doesnt get stuck in traffic jams and runs quite
frequently. I dont like buses, because they are slower and often crowded.
In Britain is no tram service. There are double-deckers, which can carry more passengers than
buses.
If I were the leader of the country, I would have built some bypasses, so that vehicles would avoid
the town centres. As for the country, I would have the roads repaired more frequently and I
would have a lot of new roads and motorways built.
There are different road signs, which give information and instructions to drivers. They tell the
drivers what to do. It is important for pedestrians to know the road signs and symbols, because
they take part in traffic too, otherwise they would risk their lives and endanger other pedestrians
and even drivers.
In Hungary there are two types of traffic lights. They can be 3 coloured and used to control traffic
at road junctions for drivers and motorcyclist or 2 coloured at zebra crossings for pedestrians. If
the lights are red, it means that you have to stop and wait. When the lights are green, you can
continue on your way. If the lights are amber, it means that red will follow. It they are red and
amber, it means that green will follow. In some European countries and in the U.S. the red and
amber lights are not on at the same time.
Rush hours are time periods when the roads, buses, trains are most crowded, because most
people are travelling to or from work.
You can buy tickets at newsagents, ticket offices, in shops, from ticket machines and from the
drivers, which is more expensive. Then you have to validate your ticket either punching i tor
stamping it. If you buy a season ticket, it is cheaper for trams and trolleybuses
