Dear Principal Weddle,
My name is A.P. Dillon and I am a local blogger and parent.
A reader brought me a set of worksheets used in one of your 7th grade classrooms which I am
going to be writing about. Before I do so, I wanted to give you a chance to comment on them and
also, a chance to answer if these are approved curriculum.
I have also contact Wake County Public Schools about this and they are looking into this
assignment as well.
I've attached the worksheets, which ask if Columbus day should really be Genocide day. The
worksheet represents Columbus as destroying the Indians who were already living in the
Americas; the implication is he did this on purpose and we shouldn't celebrate the Europeans
discovering the Continent.
Accompanying this primary sheet is another worksheet that cites 'Flocabulary - Discovering
America'. This is apparently a piece of rap music intended to help kids learn, however the lyrics
are questionable at best for any age and even less for a 7th grader. I've attached a copy of the
lyrics as well, but here's a sample:
There were five tribes
white guys called civilized,
because of the way their government
was organized:
Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw,
Seminole, and Creek.
Isnt cheap? They call my Jeep a
Jeep Cherokee?
What if they called my Jeep a Jeep Jew?
Imagine the outrage.
What would you do?
Wow, I just discovered America.
You didnt discover it.We were already here.
Wow, I just discovered America.
You aint discovered nothing.
We was already here.
My questions for you are:
Do you think this assignment is appropriate for a 7th grader?
Do you think it is appropriate to represent a major historical event using an arguably slanted and
inaccurate modern concept of social justice?
Is this approved approved curriculum?
I was informed the kids are not allowed to take home their worksheets, if true, why?
I will be writing about this tomorrow (10/8/14) and look forward to your comment on this turn of
events.
Best,
A.P. Dillon

Thank you for responding.
I am pushing back my article a day to allow for your follow-up and any statement you'd like to
make.
