ForthesecondtimeallGrade6studentsreadtheirwayaroundtheworldwiththeirreading
passports,wheretheycollectedstampsforreadingbooksindifferentgenresfromdifferent
partsoftheworld.Themostinterestingjourneyswerechosenandthisculminatedinapizza
partyforthebesttravellers/readers(withmanythankstoMrJackforallowinghisroom
againtobethrashedasthepartyvenue).

Meet&GreetLibraryPartiesarealovelywaytoconnectwithcolleagues,promotenewly
arrivedmaterials,andmakesurethatnewresourcesdonotdisappearunseenonthelibrary
shelves.TheMeet&GreetpartieswerecombinedwiththeWikiWonderlandevent,where
teachershadachancetoshowofftheirnewlydevelopedoroldtimefavouritewikis.Tobe

Furtherstepsweretakeninthedevelopmentoftheverticalandhorizontalinformationliteracy
program.ThereviewoftheSocialSciencesCurriculumwasfinalisedandinformation
literacyisnowpartofeveryunit.AmeetingwasconductedwiththeLowerSchoolLibrarians
andICTFacilitatortoestablishtheirlearneroutcomesofinformationliteracy.Afterthata
proposalwassoftlyintroduced,outlininglearneroutcomesforGrade612,sothatastartcan
bemadetoworktowardsaschoolwideverticalalignmentofskills.
IntheIBDiplomayearsstudentsreceivedseveralintroductorysessionstoresearch,the
valueofacademiccriticality,citation,referencingandtheuseofTurnitinasastudentdriven
tool,thathelpsthemtodotherightthing,inordertoavoidplagiarism.

AttemptsaremadeagaintoreachouttotheEuropeanSchool,andfornextyearthereare
planstoshareavisitingauthorbetweenISL,St.GeorgesandtheEuropeanSchool.

TheavailablePDhasmadeitpossible,apartfromeducatingandsharingprofessional
knowledge,tofacilitateconnectionswithotherinternationalschoolLibrariansinEuropeand
aroundtheworld.

NextyearwelookforwardtostrengtheningtheconnectionswiththeLibrariansintheregion,
bymakingandhostingLibraryvisitsandsettinguponlineforumstoconnectonline.

Preparationfor1to1

TheLibraryispreparingtobecomea11environment,whentheBYODprogramis
implemented.Workingspacesneedtoberedesignedandfurnished,toaccommodategroup
workwithlaptops,practicalfacilitiesneedtobecreatedorimproved,i.e.chargingstations,
andtheteachingareacanbecomemoreflexiblethanbefore.In20142015aplanwillbe
discussedwiththeSecondaryPrincipal,theICTFacilitator,andITDirectortoensurethatthe
LibrarywillbereadyforthisexcitingnewstageinthelearningenvironmentatISL.

Libraryasthehuboftechnology

TheLibraryaimstobeaplaygroundfordevelopmentsininformationtechnology,with
informationavailableinformatssuitableforamodernlearningenvironment.
Whereverpossible,magazinesubscriptionsareavailableinprintaswellasonline,oreven
better,asanapp.Nextyearwillseeacontinuationinthatdirection,withiPadsavailablein
theLibrarytoaccessmagazineapps.
TheiPadswillalsobeusedtosearchtheonlinelibrarycatalogue,andtoaccessapps
relatedtoreadingandresearch,likeBBCNews,ebooksandebookapps,Easybib,
DestinyQuest,WhattoreadNext,etc.

Ebooks

Thedevelopmentoftheebookcollectionisavery
stimulatingchallengefortheUpperSchoolLibrary,to
effectivelypromotereadingindifferentformatstoour
studentsandtherestoftheISLcommunity,especiallyin
thelightofthe1to1program.Currentlytwoebook
platformsareavailable,wherestudents,staffandparents
candownloadebooksandreadthemontheirpersonal
devices.Nextyearwewillhopefullybeabletoreportback
onthestatisticsofborrowingebooks.

ActiveReading

AspartoftheCascadeimplementation,astartwasmadewithActiveReadingsessionsin
theMiddleSchool,andaftergoodfeedbackfromtheteachersinvolved,wehopetoimprove
onpracticenextyear.

Conclusion

IamhappytoreflectontheUpperSchoolLibraryachievementsthisyearatISL.
TheredesignandtheadditionofextraspacecombinedwiththeoneBIGruleforallour
users:RESPECThavemadetheLibraryapopularplacetobe.Studentsareengagedina
varietyofactivities,rangingfromcurlinguponthesofastoread,doingtheLibraryjigsaw,
playingchess,finishinghomework,doinggroupworkinthestudyrooms,toplayinggames
andwatchingvideosonthecomputers.ThisisexactlythehubthattheLibraryshouldbein
theschoolcommunity.
Everyone(wellmostpeople)understandthattheLibrarycanbeusedforanyactivity,as
longasitisdonewithrespectforothersinthesamespace.Iamproudofourstudentsfor
learninghowtoputthisintopractice.
IntheIB,wehavemovedforwardwiththeembeddingoftrainingsessionsforthestudentsin
research,citationandreferencing.TheLibraryplaysanimportantroleassistingstudents
withtheExtendedEssaysandtheInternalAssessments.

Importantchallengesforthefuturearethecontinuedverticalandhorizontaldevelopmentof
theinformationliteracycurriculumcontinuedsupportoftheIBDiplomaProgramthe
Librarysroleinthedevelopmentofthe1to1program,andconnectedwithallthis,afocus
onLibrarycollectiondevelopmenttoleadaswellassupport(explorationofonlineresources,
includingaudiovisualmaterials,andebooks).

TheLibraryisacommunityspaceandcanonlyfunctionwiththesupportofallatISL.Iwould
likethankeveryoneforcaring,listening,sharing,followinguponourrecommendations,and
usingtheLibrary.

CollectionDevelopmentGuidelines

I.Objectives

Theprimaryobjectiveoftheschoollibraryistoimplement,enrichandsupportthe
educationalprogramoftheschool,inaccordancewiththeschoolsPhilosophy&Objectives.
Intheareaofmaterialsselection,thelibraryprovidesawiderangeofmaterialsonalllevels,
withconsiderationfordiversityofappealanddifferentpointsofview.Thesematerialsinclude
thosefoundinthevirtuallibrary,i.e.viaInternetandotheronlineresources.Therefore,the
library:
Providesmaterialsthatwillenrichandsupportthecurriculum,takingintoconsideration
thevariedinterests,abilities,learningneeds,learningstylesandmaturitylevelsofthe
studentsserved.
Providesmaterialsforteachers,studentsandparentsthatwillencouragegrowthin
knowledge,andthatwillhelptodevelopliterary,culturalandaestheticappreciationand
ethicalstandards.
Providesmaterialswhichreflecttheideasandbeliefsofreligious,social,political,
historical,andethnicgroupsandtheircontributiontothelocal,nationalandworld
