Summarize what you find concerning the ethical foundations that you subscribe to.
I scored relatively higher for ethical issues concerning fairness and loyalty and lower for purity and
authority. This coincides with what I am aware of my ethics since I value loyalty and fairness in
everyday life highly and is not afraid to speak up about these 2 issues. I am more surprise by my lack
of authority since I see authority as a essential part of life. This could be due to the fact that I do not
try to exert authority on my peers but I obey authority set by others.
1. Being as imaginative as possible, make a list of stakeholders in the Sadhu situation.

Author, Stephen, Japanese, Swiss couple, New Zealander, the Sadhu

2. What are the key issue arising in this case?

The problem of individual interest vs. the best interest or interest of a group. If individuals are not
supported by the majority in a group, they will only commit minimal effort such that it is beneficial
to themselves.

3. How would you describe the ethical systems of the key players in this story (McCoy and
Stephen). How do these ethical systems shape their thoughts, feelings and actions.

Stephen was a person with a deep moral vision while McCoy had a just but easily wavered sense of
ethics.
Stephen was very willing and committed in wanted to help the Sadhu despite the situation they
were in.
McCoy wanted to help but he was more obsessed with the thought of conquering the climb and thus
the wellbeing of the Sadhu was secondary to him. If given the same situation but not with the goal of
such magnitude, I believe McCoy would have given the Sadhu the appropriate amount of care.

4. What questions does the Parable of the Sadhu raise for you as you think about ethics in
organizations?

Are organizations able to support their employees such that they are able to make the most ethical
decisions or do each individual have to hold back because of lack or support?
Are ethics valuable in organizations or are they just holding back the ultimate goal with your own
personal goals?

5. Identify two important insights concerning what it means to create and lead ethical
organizations?
The ethics of the organization must match the ethics of the employees so that no conflict of interest
occurs and individuals do not bail out on the organization.
Creation of an ethical organization is one thing; the individuals of the organization must feel
empowered enough to take the ethical actions needed
