PROCEDURE:

1. Eight Styrofoam cubes which measured 30mm long, 30mm wide and 30mm
2. A point, located at the centre off each cube and the rubber band was then threaded through
each.
3. Match sticks were used to anchor the rubber band on either side of the beam.
4. A second beam was fabricated. However, the rubber band was strung at a distance of
10mm from the base of each cube.
5. The first beam was placed on a roller support (bottle cork) and a fixed support (wooden
block)
6. The distance from the base of the beam to the desk (datum level) was measured and
recorded as, u
7. Coins were then placed on the beam in increments of 2 until a failure point was reached.
8. After each increment of coins was added the distance from the base to the datum level was
measured (u)
9. The deflection, u was then calculated (u=u-u)
10. Steps 5-9 were repeated using the second beam.
11. The results were tabulated.
