FIRE BOMBED - John and Jan Spiteri outside their Gordon General Store business after it suffered an arson attack last Thursday

A MALE acting alone attempted to set

the Gordon General Store on fire last
Thursday night.
Gordon Store owner John Spiteri said
the man was recorded by shop security
cameras placing paper under the stores
front door and pouring flammable liquid
across the door and along the front of the
shop and setting it alight.
He had a hat on and was definitely a
male acting alone, Mr Spiteri said.
He said the incident happened at
approximately 9.15pm on Thursday,
October 9, but he had no idea who the
arsonist was.
Weve owned the store for over five
years and this is the first time anything
like this has happened, he said.
If it wasnt for some guys having a few
beers in the pub coming out and pulling
the rubber mat away from the front door,
we wouldve lost the shop.
I owe them a beer.
He said the damage included a burnt
front door, burnt mats and burns to the
front of the shop.
We decided to close the shop (Friday)
because of the smell of the smoke and
will be open again first thing in the
morning.
Bystander Tina Scott said she and her
husband Bob were leaving the pub when
they saw the flames.
All the mats were on fire out the front
and the whole shop was full of smoke.
You could smell petrol, Mrs Scott said.
Someone had poured a strip of petrol
along the front and stuffed some paper
in the doorjamb and set it alight. It
couldve been a disaster.
She said her husband went and got
some buckets of water from the pub to
try and douse the flames until the CFA
arrived.
Anyone with information should
contact the Gordon Police on 5368 9202
or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Car veers off highway

A MAN in his 20s was

critically injured in a single
car accident three kilometres
east of Ballan on the Western
Highway last Thursday.
The car left the highway
and crashed into a tree on
a privately owned farming
property shortly before 3pm.
A
spokesman
for
Ambulance Victoria said
they got the call at 2.51pm
and two road ambulances
from
Daylesford
and
Hepburn were mobilised,
along with a MICA unit,
an air ambulance, duty
manager
and
general
manager.
The spokesman said the
man, who was the single
occupant of the car, was
airlifted to the Alfred
Hospital in a critical
condition.
Moorabool Highway Patrol
Leading Senior Constable
John Volf said the 20-yearold male from Ballarat was
driving a green Honda
hatchback
and
several
witnesses had reported he

side on, LSC Volf said.
The car was a write-off and
he was flown to the Alfred

He said there were no

MOORABOOL Shire Council will
receive $8564 to add new books to its
collection in the lead up to next years
Premiers Reading Challenge.
Member for Western Victoria, Simon
Ramsay, said the funding would go to
the Lerderderg Library in 2014/15 as
part of the $1 million Premiers Reading
Challenge book fund.
He said the popular annual Premiers
Reading Challenge encouraged more

children to read, to read more often and

to read more widely.
This 2014-15 allocation from the
Premiers Reading Challenge Book
Fund provides a wonderful boost
to library stocks, for the benefit of
Victorias young readers, Mr Ramsay
said.
This is part of the Victorian
Coalition Governments commitment
to improving literacy skills for our

younger Victorians.
With four young children I know the
demand to keep children learning with
new material to read. This is important
funding for children and parents.
Victorias popular Premiers Reading
Challenge is supported by former
premiers Ted Baillieu, Steve Bracks,
John Brumby, John Cain, Jeff Kennett

Are you happy with the

local election process?
With less than a month before submissions from the
public close, changes to local
government elections could
be on the way.
Victorians are being asked
to provide feedback on a
range of proposals relating to local government
voting and electoral structure - including a move to
universal postal voting and
having more information on
candidates.
A report prepared by the
Local Government Electoral

Review which independently reviewed the process

of electing local councillors
following the 2012 municipal elections recommended changes and Minister for
Local Government Tim Bull
released the findings of the
review for public feedback.
The Victorian Coalition
Government commissioned
the review in response to
an unprecedented number
of complaints to the Local
Government
Inspectorate
following the 2012 local government elections.
Among more than 450

complaints to the Inspectorate were concerns about the

election process and behaviour of some candidates,
confusion over who could
vote, a lack of information
about candidates and the
large number of dummy
candidates, Mr Bull said.
In response to these concerns and as a means of improving local democracy the
panel has analysed the way
councillors are elected and
who is able to vote.
Moorabool Shire Council
CEO Rob Croxford was
tight-lipped in the lead-up to

the closing of submissions.

We are following the MAV
lead on this and welcome reforms that assists democracy
at the local level.
The Stage 1 and 2 reports
are available at www.dtpli.
vic.gov.au/localgovernment
with submissions accepted
until Monday 3 November
2014.
Any recommendations accepted by the Government
following the public consultation period would be
implemented to take effect
from the next council elections in October 2016.

THE two existing Ballan

Railway Station car parks
will soon be linked and a
further 45 car spaces will
be created to encourage
commuters to catch public
transport.
The station upgrade will
increase car parking to 240
spaces.
Last week Victorian Minister for Public Transport,
Terry Mulder, announced

that the contract to improve

Ballan Station had been
awarded to Civilex.
This investment will link
the existing car parks at
Ballan station and improve
access for road coaches, Mr
Mulder said.
Liberal candidate for Buninyong Ben Taylor said
works would commence at
Ballan station by early November, with the new free

commuter car parking spaces to open in January 2015.

Nationals Candidate for
Buninyong Sonia Smith said
following the upgrade, buses would have the ability to
enter via the existing eastern
entrance and have a separate
exit point.
The promised one kilometre passing loop at Rowsley
(between Bacchus Marsh
and Ballan) has been pushed

back to the second stage of

the $14.1 million Ballarat line
upgrade.
The passing loop, which
was originally allocated to
Ballan along with a second
rail platform and pedestrian
flyover, was a 2010 election
promise by the Victorian Coalition Government. In May
this year Member for Western Victoria, Simon Ramsay,
announced the loop would
now be built at Rowsley.

Victims of crime
have a voice
VICTORIAS
first
ever
Commissioner for Victims
of Crime will be a voice for
those whove suffered from
criminal acts, says Bacchus Marsh woman Noelle
Dickson.
Ms
Dickson,
whose
22-year-old daughter Sarah
Cafferkey was murdered in
November 2012, said the appointment of former Police
Association Secretary Greg
Davies as Commissioner
was a big step forward.
She said while the Victims of Crime Association
(VOCA) were fantastic, there
was really no other support
within the criminal justice
system for victims.
You dont know whats
available to you and youre
really left on your own. Plus
when youre in that state
youre very numb and have
no way of comprehending
it all. Thats why private
groups like Support After
Murder were formed, Ms
Dickson said.
Hopefully hell (Greg
Davies) be able to direct us
and let victims know where

put in touch with the most

appropriate support and
advice.

The Commissioner will

also be an advocate for
the interests of victims of
crime in their dealings with
government agencies, and
provide advice on how the
justice system can be further
improved to meet the needs
of victims, Mr Clark said.

we can go for support.
She said not only would
the commissioner be able
to help victims to access information and support, but
he could also recommend
changes to the law.
Ill hopefully be meeting
with him on November 9
at the Victims of Crime forum, she said.

Attorney-General
Robert
Clark said: As Commissioner, Greg Davies role will
be to ensure that the rights
and needs of victims are
recognised and respected
across all government agencies, support services are

said.

Vandals were here

DARYL and Dos Hodge woke on the

morning of Sunday, October 5 to find
bright pink graffiti sprayed across their
sheep yards, on a horse feeder, bins and
even four of their horses.
The horses were pretty spooked.
The people who did it were obviously
chasing them around the yard they
were in, Mr Hodge said.
He said he and his wife have lived
south of the Ballan railway station for

more than 40 years and had never had

any trouble before.
Id say it was school kids because
over these last school holidays the
trouble started. Once my wife looked
over at the paddock and saw about 10
kids chasing our horses. Someone also
broke into my shearing shed and stole
some shearing equipment just before
the holidays, he said.
He said while the horses were

were painted on the tin in the sheep
yard and I was here was painted on
their fence next to the Ballan viaduct.
They left the gate open next to the

Music to their ears

IMAGINE a music class where
your child could bang the drums
for as long and loud as their heart
desired.
On Saturday, Ballan Mechanics
Hall hosted its first sensory music
program thanks to Embrace ASD,
Bacchus Marshs Performing Arts
HQ and Moorabool Shire Council.
Embrace ASD received a $5000
Community Strengthening grant
earlier this year which has gone towards the music program and stock
for the groups toy, book and equipment Wellbeing Library.
Mayor Paul Tatchell was invited to
the first session.
I think this is great, he said.
These kids have been really well
behaved, considering there is a lot
of mental stimulation in the class.
They were listening to instructions and following well.
I think anything that brings kids
together and broadens their horizons has got to be good.
Instructor Mai Pyin Cocking from
Performing Arts HQ volunteered
her services on the day using $1000
worth of instruments purchased
with Council grant money.
These are similar to some of the
classes we hold in Bacchus Marsh
but we have modified it a bit, she
said.
The kids are learning musical
skills through games.
They were really attentive, friend-

ly and chatty today. They were

lovely.
Amber Durante from Embrace
ASD said another session was likely
to be held before the end of the year
and she hoped the music program
could take place at least once a term.
Some kids (with a sensory disability) find music a good way to communicate and socially interact, she
said.
It breaks down their anxiety
barriers.
Embrace ASD is a community
group for the families of people
with a sensory disability such as
Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
According to the Australian Bureau
of Statistics, 115,400 Australians had
Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2012.
This was a 79 per cent increase on
2009.
International figures show that
boys are four times more likely to
have the condition than girls.
Cr Tatchell praised the initiative
within the Embrace ASD group.
Amber Durante is someone with a
lot of energy and is very creative in
the way she puts things together,
he said.
This program is not boring thats
for sure.
Anyone wanting details should call
Janine on 0421 697 125 or email embraceasd@icloud.com

Womens footy team on the cards Initiative

a success

By Jessica Howard

Plans for a Bacchus Marsh womens football team is in

full flight, with a meeting for expressions of interest being held at the Maddingley clubrooms this Friday.
The interest sparked from a group of girls in the area
who said that if a football team were available to them,
they would play. Rod Bertram, an organiser of the
potential team, said that a lot of girls who were previously involved in the womens youth league, now had
nowhere to go as they have reached the age of 18.
We are trying to form the womens team, as a lot of
girls have come out of the youth competitions and are
now too old, he said.
Although its off season, we need to gauge what interest there is. We will take anyone of any age and any skill,
so hopefully people who are committed will actually
play.
If the team goes ahead, they will join Ballarat teams,
Redan and Golden Point in the Victorian Womens Football League, located in Melbourne. Currently consisting
of 31 clubs from Victoria across six divisions, the league
has a total of over 1,000 players. However, Mr Bertram
said that if enough interest arises, the BFL has offered to
create a new competition for women.
If we can get four or more womens teams involved,
the BFL said they will make it a competition in Ballarat,
so if we can get Bacchus Marsh up and running, we will
only need one more to have a local competition in the
area, which would be really good.
It gives the opportunity for the younger girls to keep
playing footy, and other women to be involved. There is
a good social aspect, and its about being part of a team

Support Small Business Day has been

labelled an early success in Moorabool.
22 businesses signed up to participate
in the Victorian Government initiative
- 14 from Bacchus Marsh, seven from
Ballan and one from Gordon.
The annual Support Small Business
Day aims to increase local spending at small retail businesses with a
shop front to boost the local economy,
increase local competition, drive
product diversity and innovation,
create jobs and also build stronger
neighbourhoods.
This year, participating local businesses were also eligible for a workshop on social media marketing.
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor Paul
Tatchell said early signs show that the
initiative was a success.
Council will review the campaign in
coming weeks with local traders and
project partners Ballan and District
Chamber of Commerce to determine
outcomes and improvements for next
year.
Early feedback from participants
was that it was worthwhile, providing
a vehicle to market local businesses,
rewards for consumers for shopping
locally and educating local business
operators on social media marketing.

MOORABOOL COMMENCES PROPERTY INSPECTIONS FOR FIRE
HAZARDS
Council Ofcers have commenced inspections for re prevention throughout the Shire.
Early indications are for a warmer than expected spring with reduced rainfall and the CFA
is advising Victorians to begin preparing for the coming re season.
Council urges you to prepare early and to maintain your property in a re ready condition.
Your property should be well maintained throughout the year as a well maintained property
stands a greater chance of surviving a bush or grass re.
Ensure that the grass and vegetation around your property is maintained and clear the
gutters of leaves and twigs. Remove material that can burn from around your house and
engage with your neighbours regarding your re plans and preparing your properties.
Remember that re prevention is the responsibility of everyone within our community.
Council Ofcers will inspect properties throughout the Shire and issue Fire Prevention
Notices where a risk of re is identied. Heavy nes apply for failing to comply with a
Fire Prevention Notice and Council will engage contractors to complete the works on
the notice if they are not completed. The cost of these works will be recovered from the
property owner.
If you have an up-to-date re plan and your property is well maintained, you will have done
all you can to protect your family from the threat of re.
For more information on preparing your property and on re plans visit

Cherry blossom bliss hits

The town of Bacchus Marsh is experiencing the beauty of local cherry blossom
season ahead of the 8th Annual Strawberries & Cherries Trail Weekend in
November. This years event takes place
on 22nd and 23rd November, across multiple locations linked via a strawberry
and cherry trail, and supported via free
shuttle buses.
The Strawberries & Cherries Weekend
celebrates the arrival of strawberry and
cherry season across the Bacchus Marsh
food bowl.
Local grower and Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association President David Durham
says many local farmers are optimistic

that the season ahead is looking positive.

We are fortunate that there has been
plenty of water around and the cherries
are flowering well. Many cherry varieties are at full bloom right now and it is
a beautiful and unique experience to take
in the panoramic view across the orchard
and see the masses of cherry blossoms.
MrDurham said they hope to see a
strong crop ahead of this years event
at which15,000 visitors are expected to
attend.
For the most part we are now relying on
bees to pollinate the fruit, combined with
a hope for good weather in the coming
weeks.

Melton Reservoir (Exford Weir) has long held the potential to be a

major passive/active recreation centre for Melton, Moorabool &
Eynesbury residents.
A study regarding Community access was undertaken by my
Parliamentary Intern in 2011 (see www.donnardella.com.au). Further
studies and funding earmarked by Melton City Council are promising
signs that the long awaited general
public access to this great community
recreational resource will soon occur.
For an update, interested individuals/
groups should contact either Melton
City Council on 9747 7200 or my office.

HELLO
EUROPE

The Seas the Limit

Making the decision to go on holidays is always an easy
one. Most of us never get tired of jetting off into the sunset
and discovering a new destination.
Written By HelloWorld travel experts

hether youre planning an

adrenalin-fuelled adventure
holiday, a pampering spa
break, or a tropical getaway,
choosing what type of holiday to take and
where to visit takes time.
if youre looking for an alternative to
touring and road trips, think about cruising.
With a huge variety of options out there,
including river, ocean and expedition, cruising
provides a unique and convenient way to see
the world. so, why book a cruise?
Wallet-free travel
the term all-inclusive goes hand in hand
with cruising. With many cruises, once you
have made your final payment, you can
safely put your wallet away and prepare to
enjoy limitless dining, activities and nightly
entertainment, as well as access to onboard
facilities such as pools, gyms and spas.
Go to the movies, have a day at the waterpark or check out a night time show all on
board, and the best bit, its all included. Make
sure you check the details of your cruise with
your agent, so once you board you can sit
back and enjoy eating, drinking and dancing
until your hearts content.

Unpack only once

if youre looking to put your feet up and relax,
then cruising might just be your new best
friend. With cruising, lugging your suitcase to
the airport or struggling to fit in those extra
purchases, are a thing of the past. you can
hop onboard, unpack once and forget about
your suitcase for the rest of your holiday.
The world is your oyster
another great thing about cruising is that
you dont always have to choose just one
destination to explore. simply pick an area
of the world, such as the Mediterranean,
north america, the pacific islands or south
east asia, and you can experience a range
of regions, cultures and cities, all for the
price of one holiday. one day you could be
shopping in singapore, the next, sampling
the local cuisine in penang. What about
sailing through the Greek islands today and
discovering turkey tomorrow?
there are plenty of reasons to make
your next holiday a cruise. Whether youre
travelling with your family, as a couple, solo,
or with a group of your friends, theres a
perfect cruise for you.

Dear Editor,
I am writing to convey my
disgust in the reporting of
the Moorabool Shire Council Meeting (1 Oct 2014) in
Council Clips (MN 7 Oct
2014).
Claim being made that this
was an issue between the
Bullocks and Aquilina.
Correction, this is about the
Moorabool Shire Councils
lack of action in regards to
the property 4 Love Close
Maddingley.
No mention of the inconsistencies in the report by
the council staff or the reason for the access.
Anyone who drives past
or goes up this street can
see for themselves that the
Moorabool Shire Council
has allowed a tip to be put
there.
Although the residents in
the area should be protected
by COUNCIL LOCAL LAW,
the Moorabool Shire Council
has chosen to ignore building extensions, no permits
for garages/shipping containers and the storage of
vehicles and tyres as well as
other rubbish being stored
on this property.
All in breach of the MOORABOOL SHIRE LOCAL
LAW.
Why dont you report this?
Your article was irresponsi-

ble and lacking in integrity.

I am not sure what you are
trying to stir up with this
article but in my opinion
this was a POOR EFFORT on
your behalf.
And maybe next time you
can get my name right.

Dear Editor,
PARKING Ballan Park &
Ride
With the rail lines being
upgraded and a new timetable to follow, I wonder if
more parking space in Ballan would be necessary if
the Gordon Railway Station
were to be reopened.
As I see it, this would make
more car spaces available to
families instead of being all
day parked in Ballan as the
development continues in
both areas.

Dear Editor,
Thank you for allowing
me space to pass on sincere
thanks to the Ballan and
District community for their
most generous support of
the Winter Food Appeal, for
less privileged families of
the district.
The collection was arranged by the Ballan Uniting

Dear Editor,
I noted that Nationals Candidate Sonia Smith took out
a full page advertisement in
the Moorabool News last
week. It was headed Buy
Local.
I note Sonias photos taken
with local business owners but then looked for her
Partys policy statement on
this issue.
I have a friend who does not
wish to be named because
he works at Alstom in Ballarat, where they have been
successfully building trains
for Melbourne over the last
few years.

Now I understand that the

Liberal National State government has allowed them
to be cut out of the next
round of tendering which
may see Alstom close in Ballarat with the loss of 70 jobs.
Her National Party with
their Liberal partners have,
I believe, apparently allowed
a Chinese and a Korean
company to be the final bidders instead of our local Ballarat workers.
We need solid policies from
Sonia and the National Party

Actions do speak
louder than words

In the many, many environment fields, good news

seems hard to come by. I
was planning on writing
this bit of good news for
this weeks piece before
another shark attack happened in Western Australia. In light of what happened to the young man in
Western Australia it seems
an odd thing to write.
However, I still believe that
in the long run this is good
news. The good news is the
announcement of the Western Australian government that it has cancelled
its shark cull this summer.
You might have seen the
news coverage earlier this
year when thousands of
Australians united to protest this brutal and unnecessary practice. There were
protests on beaches from
Manly to Margaret River

and the federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt

received nearly a quarter of
a million emails calling on
him to stop the cull.
This WA shark cull trial
that began earlier this year
killed 68 sharks and cost
the WA Government $1.3
million. The Environmental Protection Authority
(EPA), which reviewed the
trial, has recommended
the State Governments
proposal to deploy drum
lines off WA beaches this
summer be abandoned.
Premier Colin Barnett said
it will not be appealed. This
is a great victory for sharks,
for the health of our oceans
and for the environment.
And it happened because
thousands of Australians acted and wrote and
moved and marched and
made speeches and decid-

ed to do something. It can
be done and actions like
this are needed to be done
now more than ever.
Ironically in light of this
news, according to a new
analysis by scientists at
WWF and the Zoological Society of London, the
number of wild animals
on Earth has halved in the
past 40 years. The research
indicated that creatures
across land, rivers and the
seas are being decimated
as humans kill them for
food, and other reasons,
in unsustainable numbers,
while polluting or destroying their habitats. If only
we all thought so much of
all animals, including ourselves? As Professor Ken
Norris, ZSLs director of
science so well stated, If
half the animals died in
London zoo next week it

would be front page news,

but that is happening in the
great outdoors. This damage is not inevitable but a
consequence of the way we
choose to live. He then repeated what has been said
for so long by so many, Nature, which provides food
and clean water and air,
was essential for human
wellbeing.
There is another bit of
good news and that is that
from 1 January next year,
China will ban the import
of coal with high ash or
sulphur content and place
a three per cent tariff onto
all coal imports (Evan Ellis, Eureka Street - 23 September 2014). According to
Evan, this move is a onestone-two-bird approach;
less dirty coal will reduce
air pollution, particularly
around its coastal mega cit-

ies where restrictions are

tighter and the struggling
domestic mining industry
will be given a boost.
What we are all becoming aware of now is that
Chinas meteoric growth
has led to an ecological
catastrophe.
Evan goes on, The Atlantics James Fallows published two graphs that isolate one aspect of Chinas
environmental challenge,
air quality. The first graph
shows that Chinas air
quality is so bad that the
government scales it differently. Readings of good
or light in China would
be considered in the danger zone for US, Australia
and European countries.
A particularly bad day in
Shanghai is comparable to
walking through a bush
fire or volcanic eruption.

The second graph shows

that the ten worst cities in
America for air pollution
would be ranked in the
highest bracket of Excellent using Chinas skewed
scale. Chinas environmental problems are not limited
to air quality but it remains
the most visible. Nearly
half a million die each year
because of it. Many more
get sick. If thats not bad
enough, a Deutsche Bank
report released earlier this
year projected a 70 per cent
increase in air pollution by
2025 if current trends of
coal use and automobile
emissions continue.
Meanwhile here in Australia we are hell bent on
selling anyone and everyone as much coal as they
will take.
What is your opinion?

Our bacteria stimulant banishes blockages and rebalances your system

Septics and treatment systems depend on naturally occurring
healthy bacteria to break down and consume waste. But harsh
chemical cleaners and detergents kill off healthy bacteria,
upsetting the balance within your system.
When your population of healthy bacteria dwindles, the efficiency
of your system declines. Thats when bad smells begin and
blockages become more frequent.
Enzymes break down waste but cannot consume it. Over time this

I would like to thank you for the friendly service, after sales support and
excellent result I have received from your company and product Ecocare Activator. Our
extremely unpleasant experience with this terrible odour from the drains and septic is
now over and we couldnt be more relieved, says Michelle Lavinge from Victoria.
I have been using your product for over a decade. During that period I have had no
occasion to use the services of a plumber. Drains run freely, never is there an offensive
odour and the septic system works perfectly. I dont even have to remember to preorder. Your efficient company ensures I have an adequate supply of your product,

produce these enzymes consume broken down waste preventing
it from becoming a problem.
Ecocare Activator restores and sustains the right bacterial balance
within your system, leading to continuous waste breakdown and
the elimination of odours.

Rewarded for
effort to industry

Rabbits on
the hop

By Kate Taylor
The Department of Environment and Primary Industries has begun chasing
rabbits out of the Rowsley
Valley.
The program focuses on the
valley in an ongoing effort to
protect the Bacchus Marsh
districts
environmental
and agricultural assets, in
line with recent intensive
rabbit control projects along
the nearby Korkuperrimul
Creek and around Ingliston
conducted by DEPI.
There will be 36 Rowsley
Valley properties, covering 2,500 hectares, involved
in this new rabbit control
program.
The work will support
community-led action from
the Rowsley Valley Landcare Group and a number
of waterway protection and
re-vegetation projects being

undertaken by other organisations in the area.

DEPI Biosecurity Officer Nigel Roberts said that rabbits
are a concern in the Rowsley
Valley area and DEPI is using its enforcement powers
to support the communitys
control efforts.
Landowners have a legal
responsibility to manage
pest plants and animals on
their property to ensure
they do not negatively affect
neighbouring farms or natural assets.
Rabbits cause significant
damage to both agriculture
and the environment. In
2009 Australia lost $206 million in agricultural production because of rabbits. Rabbit grazing also significantly
impacts on native vegetation
growth.
Mr Roberts said DEPI staff
will be inspecting all properties within the Rowsley Val-

ley project area and where

required issue directions
notices to control European
rabbits.
Landowners are liable for
fines up to $35,426 under the
Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 when pest control is not undertaken.
DEPI is committed to using its enforcement powers to support the efforts of
landowners and other government organisations.
We have a clear message
from the local community
that they want DEPI to enforce action on priority
species such as rabbits and
bolster the community led
efforts.
For more information about
pest animal management
visit the DEPI website
www.depi.vic.gov.au or call

on 136 186.

A local Ballan manufacturing business has received

national awards at a recent
Australian Windows Association conference.
Paarhammer, located in
Haddon Drive, received
first place in the section
Best Use for Window and
Doors Residential New
Construction over $500,000,
and a highly commended
award in the Commercial
New Construction over $5
million category.
Long-term Ballan residents
and husband and wife, Tony
and Edith Paarhammer created the company in 1990
after making the move from
Austria. The manufacturing
company has since achieved
many success stories and
awards for their energy efficient and bushfire-safe
products.
We started the business
when we moved here, and
I guess I just fell into it as
it was my husbands background, Edith said.
We initially only came over
for 5 years, but we loved it so
much we thought we may as
well as stay,
The Residential Award, endowed to the Paarhammers
during the conference, was
for a project built in an environmentally sensitive area
on the Mornington Peninsula. Built on sand dunes in
the middle of tea trees, the
area held the second highest
rating for bushfires.
Edith said the clients wanted sustainable products with
a very high-energy efficiency, and energy savings from
61 per cent to 75 per cent.
Paarhammer also received a
highly commended award
for their windows and doors
at the Nishi Complex in
Canberra.
It was very important to

Ballans Edith Paarhammer received the 2014 Woman of

the Year award for outstanding contributions to the window
industry. Photo - submitted
the client that the mixed-use
building complex had to
reach an 8 star NatHERS rating, Edith said.
Especially designed for the
cold climate in Canberra,
high performance glazing
was used to reduce heat
loss and improve thermal
comfort while maximising
daylight.
The AWA Conference was
held at the Gold Coast on
September 17 - 19, where
Edith also received the
2014 Woman of the Year
award for outstanding contributions to the window
industry.

Youngsters enjoy Law of the Pack

Be prepared and
do your best
By Jessica Howard
A group of Bacchus Marsh children
were among a vast number of Cub Scouts
enjoying the 8th Victorian Cuboree
recently.
The annual event, this year held at Gilwell Park in Gembrook, saw 3019 cub
scouts aged between 8 and 10 take part in
a life-changing event.
14 children from the Bacchus Marsh
Scout Group adventured on a mystery
off-site excursion each day, with other
cub members from around Victoria,

New South Wales, South Australia and

Tasmania.
Cuboree Chief Director Russell Bradd
said the youngsters are well prepared
to cope with five days away from
home. For many children - and parents - the idea of living five days in the
bush with friends, sleeping four nights in
tents, eating outdoors, sharing the chores
of daily life, and tackling a challenging
activity program, would be daunting,
he said.
But our Cubs have been practising for
Cuboree for the past year, with smaller

camps within their own local Cub Pack.

They are learning to be resilient and independent, and to care for others.
This years event included a budget of
$1.35 million, which catered for 5000
litres of milk, 30,000-slices soft bread,
100,000 pieces of fruit and 600 litres of
sauce.
With the Bacchus Marsh Scout Group
usually enjoying nights in the scout hall,
or camps with one or two other groups,
the 8th Victorian Cuboree proved to be
a rewarding experience for all involved.

I really couldnt believe it,

Edith said.
It was quite a surprise and
I was really honoured. Edith writes for a number of
magazines and newspapers,
and since 2005 has written
regular window newsletters
to architects, designers and
builders.
Over Paarhammers 24
years of business, the company has amassed hundreds
of satisfied clients in all
states of Australia, however
said they attribute their success to their dedicated staff.

Selling through private sale

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV

The spring selling season is

in full swing and an increasing number of homes are for
sale across regional Victoria.
For those who choose to sell,
adjusting to the particular demands of living in a
house that is on the market
requires some organisation.
The regional market is
showing sustained price
growth 4.1 per cent statewide in the year to June 30
and at such times, those
thinking of selling are en-

couraged to consider their

options.
While the number of auctions has been increasing
in outer metropolitan and
regional areas, private sales
where an extended sale
and marketing period is
possible remain most popular. More than 80 per cent
of sales in regional areas are
private sales.
Some vendors may find this
less stressful than selling at
auction. But it can mean a

property is on the market for

longer than the typical fourweek auction period.
During that time, sellers
have to be ready for inspections at any opportunity.
Even the tidiest of homes is
rarely maintained each day
to the high standard buyers
expect at a viewing.
To ensure the sales period
does not turn into a housekeeping marathon, work
out a strategy in advance.
Agree on particular viewing

days and suitable times with

your agent and arrange for
reasonable notice perhaps
24 hours of appointments
by prospective buyers. But
be flexible; many a home has
been bought on the spur of
the moment by a buyer who
spotted the signboard.
If storing furniture to create a more spacious look in
your home, ensure the most
practical items are still accessible. For example, if a
big family gathering is coming up, store extra chairs in

a friends garage where they

can be easily retrieved.
Make a list of the vital
chores to be completed
around the house immediately before an inspection
and pay attention to those
ongoing maintenance tasks,
such as weeding the garden and mowing the lawn,
which will make the whole
property appear more presentable to interested buyers
including those who are
curious and passing by.

136 Trounces Lane, Mount Egerton

CARPENTRY

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either
PTYdynamic
LTD DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Avenue
Bowling Club

In excellent bowling conditions, Avenue Bowling

Clubs four divisions battled
out Round 2 of the BDBD
weekend competition.
Premier Division took on
the more fancied Queenscliff
at home, full of enthusiasm
after a creditable performance against Ocean Grove
last week. Unfortunately
things didnt go to plan with
Avenue only winning one
rink for the day, that of Martin Shea who won by 8 shots.
The other three rinks struggled against strong opposition, leaving Avenue 46 shots
adrift when play finished.
Final scores - Avenue 61 lost
Queenscliff 107

Division 3 travelled to Sebastopol looking to avenge

last years preliminary final
defeat. Bill Hawkens rink
got off to a flyer, leading 14-4
at the tea break, however Sebastopol won the first 6 ends
upon resumption to take a 1
shot lead. As all good teams
do, Bill and his team fought
back to win 8 of the last 10
ends to run out 13 shot winners. Glenn Davies rink continued their unbeaten record
with a 10 shot win, whilst
Gary Candys rink lost on
the last end of the day in a
great contest that saw the
scoresno greater than 1 shot
apart all day. Unfortunately
Frank Pomeroys rink had a
day to forget, although they
were unlucky not to win
the end on a number of occasions, eventually going
down by 13 shots. The two
winning rinks were enough
to get Avenue over the line
by 9 shots.
Final scores - Avenue90 def
Sebastopol 81
Division 5 made it two
wins from two starts with a
strong 14 shot win over BMS.

Leading the way for Avenue

was Dave McKendricks rink
and Laurie Burkes rink,
which both won by 13 shots.
These winning margins
were enough to cover the
other 2 rinks, which both
had narrow losses.
Final score - Avenue 91 def
BMS 77

Division 8 travelled to Midlands Golf, which always

proves a difficult green to
play on, but the players
stuck to their guns all day
to run out two shot winners.
For Avenue veteran Stan
Cumming in his first game
in almost 2 years won by 17
shots, whilst Ron Millington
won the last 2 ends for a 2
shot victory. Stewart Wilson
also battled hard all day to
earn a draw. Again this side
contained a number of fillins, and a very promising 8
year-old to secure the narrow victory.
Final score - Avenue 91 def
Midlands Golf 89

In midweek pennant Avenue won all three rinks in

Division 1, to open their account for the season, with
strong wins to Doreen Connells rink (14 shots) and Marie Russells rink (24 shots).
Di Hardiments rink completed the trifecta with a 2
shot win.
Final score - Avenue 95 def
Mt Xavier 55

Midweek pennant - Division 3 are still winless after

2 rounds and came up only
5 shots short against Ballarat North in an improved
performance, despite winning 2 of the 3 rinks. Hazel
Treloar (7 shots up) and
Marlene Kneebone (3 shots
up) performed well, but just
couldnt get Avenue over the
line for what would have
been their first win of the
season.
Final score - Avenue 61 lost
Ballarat North 66

Mixed fortunes for the

Darley Cricket Club over
the weekend with the Ballarat Junior cricket season
kicking off with one day
matches, whilst the seniors
finished off the second day
of their opening round
matches. Three Under 12
sides played the first of their
two day round one matches
in the Melton Junior Cricket
Association.
The 1st Eleven resumed
their 225 run chase at 1/13,
and were in trouble early at
2/18. Batting at number four,
Matthew Cape (65) tried to
steady the side with numerous middle order partnerships, however none were
big enough to establish any
dominance. Ryan Ali (54)
at seven looked to build on
Capes efforts but also ran out
of partners in quick succession. Brad Barnes (5*) joined
Ali at 9-189, and looked settled when they comfortably
broke 200, however just two
more runs were added before Darley were all-out just
24 runs short of victory.
The 2nd Eleven started their
bowling innings fresh after
batting out the overs for a
commanding 315 the week
before, however Golden
Point were still in at 1/97
before Ben Hall (3/52) finally
got a break through clean
bowling the number three
batsmen. Hall along with
skipper Marcus Ingvorsen
(5/74) set about removing
the remaining batsmen at
regular intervals to enable
an 87 run win to kick off the
season.
The 3rd Eleven already had
their work cut out defending
185 with Golden Point resuming at 0/31, and passing
the total one wicket down.
Darley only managed a total of three wickets before
stumps were drawn with the
home side at 3/291.
The 4th Eleven also had a

battle on their hands chasing 348, however a 74 run

opening stand between Lachie Wheeler and Garrick
De Marchi had Golden Point
on the back foot early. De
Marchi was dismissed for
22, while Wheeler tried to
secure more partners without success and finished on
46 and Darley 3/97. Cadman
brothers Duncan (20) and
Joel (16) were glimmers of
hope through the middle order, and Jordan Monaghan
(12) and skipper Ben Ihlow
(28*) successfully held off an
early Golden Point victory
falling just 4.3 overs short of
a full days play.
Results - Juniors
Under 16 Gold had a comfortable win batting first and
completing their innings to
be 9/109cc. Despite a large
number of wides, the Lions
were able to capitalise on a
steady flow of wickets bowling Brown Hill out for just 82
runs in 22 overs.
Under 16 Blue had trouble
restricting a strong Ballan batting outfit, getting
just2/194 with the ball. The
young side did very well to
bat out their overs, but could
not match Ballan and finished with 7/49
The Under 14s had a great
win over Wendouree after
winning the toss and sending the visitors in, the Red
Caps finished their innings
at 5/94. Darley had little
trouble passing the target
just three wickets down
with two overs to spare.
The Under 12 Cubs will
have some work to do this
Friday when they resume
at 1/70 chasing Melton West
who made 5/379.
Under 12 Roar are in a
strong position at 3/89 in
a batting innings which
included the retirements
of Ryan Densley (28*) and
Will Johnson (25*). Melton
South are 4/38 off their first
20 overs with Michael Bill
leading the way with the ball
with 2/9.
Under 12 Pride will also
be seeking a win first up in
their match against Melton
Centrals Red.

Ballan Tennis

The junior pennant tennis has commenced with five teams

competing this season.
C4 and C5 had byes this week with B1, C1 and C3 teams all
having a good start to the season with wins in all grades.
The C2 championship team from last year, Mitchell Furlong,
Ben Davis, Nick Jennings and Lachlan Owens have moved
up to C2 this year. They travelled out to Meredith to have
another convincing win 24-13.
B1 and C3 played at home this week with Lachlan Conlan
returning to the B1 team, and having an excellent start to the
season, winning both his singles and his doubles with Owen
Robertson 6-0. Lachlan Furlong and Juukle Castelijn both
