Celebrate the Life!
Every day there is a fiesta in Mexico! That was my first
impression about the Mexican lifestyle after moving to
Baja Sur in November 2007. Even though there are around
6,000 festivals in Mexico throughout the year, September
introduces us to the most festive season. Rich culture and
colorful traditions, with rituals and ceremonies that never
fail to amaze, are inviting us to join with family and friends
to celebrate. Accompanied by plentiful activities offered
by nature, entertainment and social responsibility events,
I will use the coming festive season to remind myself to
cherish every single day and every precious moment that
takes my breath away.
I would like to invite you to capture unforgettable
moments of your escapes in Baja and send them to our
Photo Contest (see page 41). The top ten photographs will
be awarded and toured around Baja Sur.

¡Celebremos la Vida!
¡Cada día hay una fiesta en México! Esa fue mi impresión
sobre el estilo de vida mexicano después de haberme
mudado a Baja California Sur en Noviembre del 2007. Aún
cuando hay alrededor de 6000 fiestas conmemorativas
diferentes en todo México durante el año, Septiembre nos
da la bienvenida a la época más colorida del año. Una gran
cultura y tradiciones pintorescas con rituales y ceremonias
que nunca nos dejan de sorprender, nos invitan a reunir-
nos con amigos y familiares para celebrar. Acompañado
por una gran variedad de actividades al aire libre, entre-
tenimiento y eventos a favor de causas benéficas, usaré
la entrante época para apreciar cada día y cada hermoso
momento que me deja sin habla.
Me gustaría invitarlos a que capten los más preciosos
momentos de sus escapes en Baja y los envien a nuestro
Concurso de Fotografía (más informes en página 41). Las
diez mejores fotografías serán premiadas e irán de tour
alrededor del Sur de la Baja.

hat hat makes a date a festivity? Is it because of

VIDA
all the years of traditions? Would it be because
of the food, drinks and colors of each celebra-
tion? Or might it be the look of expectation,
hope and remembrance of people? Mexico is a
country with centuries of vivid practices. It’s people and its history
are dyed of a color palette so unique and a society rich in tradi-
tions because every date has a special meaning to every Mexican.
In Mexico there are around 5,000 to 6,000 special dates in the year
throughout the country. They can be religious, patriotic, national
or regional festivities, and the lasts ones being the most common,
particularly in the southeast of the country. Although festival dates
run all year, it is during the last months of the year when the most
vibrant and meaningful ones occur. September is known in Mex-
ico as the patriotic month. During this month, almost two centu-
ries ago, a group of Mexicans fought for the freedom of its country
and achieved a glorious victory. September 16th is Mexico’s Inde-
pendence Day, but its commemoration is only the prelude for the
most colorful season in Mexican celebration agenda.

A reflection of culture, tradition and centuries of history

¿ Que hace de una ocasión una festividad? ¿Serán los años

de tradición? ¿La comida, bebida y colores de cada oca-
sión? ¿O será la mirada expectativa, alegría, esperanza y
añoranza de chicos y grandes? México es un país con sig-
los de tradición. A través de su pueblo, su historia se ha
teñido de una gama de colores característicos de una sociedad
muy rica en cultura y costumbres, ya que cada fecha tiene un sig-
nificado muy especial para cada mexicano.
En Mexico, es común encontrar que cada año se celebran entre
5000 y 6000 fiestas en toda la República, las cuales varían en corte
religioso, patrióticas, oficiales, o regionales, siendo éstas últimas las
más variadas sobretodo en estados del suroeste del país. Aunque
durante todo el año se puede encontrar fiestas en cada rincón, las
de mayor arraigo y tradición sin duda alguna ocurren durante los
últimos meses del año. Es de todos conocido que Septiembre es
el mes patrio, el mes donde hace casi 2 siglos atrás un grupo de
mexicanos lucho por la libertad del pueblo y lo logró. El 16 de Sep-
tiembre, día de la Independencia Nacional, marca el preludio a la
temporada más colorida en el calendario de México.

Day of the Dead

Día de Muertos

E
sta tradición de origen hispánico tiene su base en la
religión y en celebrar con alegría a todos los difuntos.
Contrario a lo que se pudiera pensar, el día de muertos
es una celebración para honrar a quienes ya murieron
preparándoles en una ofrenda sus platillos y bebidas
favoritas: fruta, pan, conservas, tamales, mole, dulces y, el tradi-
cional pan de muerto. El altar es decorado con flores, veladoras,
incienso, imágenes de santos y/o de los difuntos. En algunas oca-
siones se pone una silla para que el espíritu pueda sentarse a que
disfrute de su altar y la comida que le prepararon, mientras que
una banda de música toca en vivo sus canciones favoritas.
Un personaje muy importante de esta celebración e icónico den-
tro de la cultura mexicana es La Catrina. Originalmente creada
para hacer una representación metafórica de la clase social alta
en México a principios de 1900, hoy en día es conocida como la
muerte. La Catrina siempre anda vestida con prendas finas y colo-
ridas. De elegante pose y facciones estilizadas, está presente en las
fiestas de los difuntos para recordar a quienes viven que la vida es
hoy y lo será eternamente; y que las diferentes expresiones artísti-
cas, musicales o culinarias son solamente una forma muy pequeña
de honrar a aquellos seres queridos que ya fallecieron.

his tradition with Hispanic roots, is based in religion
and is a celebration of life and tribute to the dead. Con-
trary to what many may believe, the Day of the Dead
is a celebration to honor those who have passed away
by preparing them an altar with their favorite dishes
and beverages: fruit, tamales, mole, sweets and the traditional pan
de muerto (sweet bread typical for this day). The altar is decorated
with typical flowers, candles, incense and images of saints and/or
of the dead one. You can also put a chair by the altar so the spirit of
the dead can sit and enjoy the food that was prepared especially
for him or her, while their favorite music is played by a live band.
A very special character in this celebration, which has become an
icon of Mexican culture, is La Catrina. Originally created as a meta-
phoric representation of the high-end social class in Mexican soci-
ety in early 1900, it is now know as the Death. La Catrina is always
dressed up with tasteful and colorful clothes with an elegant and
stylish pose. It is present in the celebrations of the death to remind
those who are alive that life is today, and will forever be, and that
the different music, culinary or artistic expressions, are just a tiny
way to honor our beloved ones that have passed away.

ithout a doubt, this date is one of the most repre-
sentative ones for all Catholics in Mexico because it
celebrates the apparition of the Virgin Mary, with bru-
nette skin, to a native Mexican boy named Juan Diego
in 1583. The Virgin’s image was imprinted in the tunic
of the boy, and is now venerated within the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe in Tepeyac’s hill in Mexico City.
The Celebration begins at midnight December 12th, when faithful believ-
ers gather around at her image to sing her the traditional mañananitas
(happy birthday song). People from all around the country travel to the
basilica dressed up with their native wear. Also, within all the churches in
all Mexico, there are typical dancers and offers in their atrium. All these
different manifestations are just a humble way for the people to show
their love and respect to the one they consider their mother, Virgen de
Guadalupe.

in duda alguna, esta fecha es una de las más representativas
para los católicos en México, ya que recuerda la aparición de
la Virgen María, de piel morena, a un indígena mexicano de
nombre Juan Diego. Su imagen quedó grabada en el ayate
del indígena, imagen que hoy en día es venerada dentro de
la Basílica Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en el cerro del Tepeyac en la
Ciudad de México.
La celebración comienza a la media noche del 12 de Diciembre, donde
miles de fieles acuden a cantarle las “mañanitas” a la virgen morena.
Fieles de todas partes de la república realizan peregrinaciones a la basí-
lica con vestidos tradicionales indígenas. Igualmente, en cada parroquia
en la república es común ver bailes y ofrendas en el atrio de las iglesias.

DECEMBER 12 TO 24 / 12 AL 24 DE DICIEMBRE:

he practice of posadas began as an effort of Spaniards
to eliminate the customs of native Mexicans to wor-
ship their pagan gods and to substitute their traditions
with the observance of traditional catholic celebra-
tions. At the winter solstice, with the mass, there were
representations of the nativity of Jesus on earth. Merriment will
continue with fireworks, piñatas and carol singing. These celebra-
tions grew stronger outside the church, in neighborhoods, with
the substitution of religious songs with popular ones.
Nowadays, between December 12th and 24th, families and friends
gather to honor this tradition. Among the multiple ways to cel-
ebrate a posada, one of the most representative one is the custom
of asking for shelter while singing a traditional carol. It begins with
a procession of a group of people carrying the figures of Joseph
and Mary. They sing and ask to be allowed to spend the night in
that house. On the other side, a group of people who represent an
angry owner of the house sings to be left in peace, asking them to
leave. When the owner finds out that who is asking are Joseph and
Mary, he happily changes his mood and lets them in singing carols
of joy and faith. Afterwards, they proceed to break a piñata in the
shape of a star with seven points (one for each original sin) and to
celebrate with music such blissful time.
DECEMBER 25 / 25 DE DICIEMBRE:

worldwide festivity, Christmas in Mexico has its roots
in the celebration of the birth of the son of God on
Earth. It is tradition that families gather to share din-
ner on the night of December 24th. Usual dinner is
composed by stuffed turkey, cider and cake. At mid-
night there is a gift exchange, although in some regions in Mexico,
is until January 6th that children receive their gifts from the Three
Wise Men.

osadas. La práctica de las posadas comenzó como un
esfuerzo de los españoles de revocar las costumbres
indígenas de adorar a sus dioses paganos, susti-
tuyendo sus tradiciones por ceremonias apegadas a
la religión católica. Junto con la misa se representaban
escenas de la Navidad para después festejar con luces de bengala,
cohetes, piñatas y villancicos. Posteriormente, las celebraciones
fueron tomando más fuerza en barrios y en las casas, sustituyendo
la música religiosa por el canto popular.
Hoy en día, entre el 12 y 24 de Diciembre, familias y amigos se
reúnen para honrar esta fiesta navideña. Dentro de las múltiples
formas de celebrar una posada, una de las más representativas es
la tradición de pedir posada. Ésta comienza con una procesión car-
gando las figuras de José y María. El grupo entona estrofas de una
canción popular donde piden se les deje pasar la noche dentro
de esa casa. Del otro lado, otro grupo de personas representan al
dueño de la propiedad, quien enojado y molesto por ser molesta-
do a altas horas de la noche, les pide se retiren y lo dejen dormir
a la par de que entona otros párrafos de esa canción. Cuando el
dueño se entera de que es José y María quienes piden posada, de
forma gustosa los deja pasar entonando canciones de alegría, fé
y esperanza. Posterior a ello, es común quebrar una piñata de 7
picos (un pico por cada pecado capital) y celebrar con música tan
dichosa ocasión.

n Mexico, as in everywhere else, a New Year signifies the
opportunity to begin something new, celebrate the year
that is passing and welcoming the coming one, to analyze
old goals and make New Year’s resolutions and celebrate. It
is common to find families and friends celebrating on the
eve of New Year, to toast right at midnight, eating 12 grapes, a
grape for each month of the new year, and wishing something as
eating each of them.

año significa oportunidades de comenzar algo nuevo,
de analizar y renovar metas, lo cual es motivo de fiesta.
Es común encontrar a familias celebrando la cena la
noche del 31 de Diciembre para brindar en el momen-
to que llega la media noche y comer una uva por cada mes del
año que viene, deseando consigo que es lo que les gustaría reci-
bir durante cada mes. Las celebraciones en ocasiones incluyen
fuegos artificiales y suelen extenderse hasta las primeras horas
del día siguiente.
 JANUARY 6 / 6 DE ENERO:
Day of the Three Wise Men

estivity brought to Mexico by the Spaniards. Tradition
says that the Three Wise Men called Melchior, Gaspar
and Balthazar (representing Europe, Asia and Africa)
came from the west to worship the first manifestation
of the son of God on Earth, and offered him three sym-
bolic gifts: gold, incense and myrrh. In Mexico, to celebrate this date
is common to eat sweet bread called rosca de reyes (ring-shaped
bread) with your friends and family. Bread is made out of orange
flower and butter, with dried fruits and nuts. Inside the bread there
are a couple of small baby boy figures, who
represent baby Jesus. The person who
gets the figure in its slice has to
host a small party on February
2nd, Dia de la Candelaria, with
tamales and atole. Also, in some
regions of Mexico, it is tradition
to give children a gift.
FEBRUARY 2 / 2 DE FEBRERO:

xactly 40 days after Christmas, on February 2nd (Día de
la Candelaria) is the end of the Christmas period and
commemorates when baby Jesus was presented in the
temple by his parents. Those who got the baby boy fig-
ure in the rosca de reyes on January 6th, are given the
task of being the godfather or godmother of baby Jesus. In some
provinces in Mexico, they are responsible for caring for him and
this responsibility begins by dressing up a real baby Jesus figure.
On February 2nd, the real baby Jesus figure is placed in a basket
with flowers and is taken by the godfather/godmother and their
compadres (host of where the rosca de reyes was shared) to a sol-
emn mass in church in which baby Jesus will receive a blessing.
Once the ceremony is over, people return to the house to cele-
brate with tamales and atole.
There are many more dates with history and traditions in Mexico. It is
impossible to forget about the Carnival in the cities of Mazatlan and
Veracruz, or the celebration of Fiestas de los Lunes de Cerro, better known
as the Guelaguetza in Oaxaca. Each region, community and town in
Mexico offers a past rich in history and beliefs, customs and dishes, fan-
tasies and yearns. These festivities are an essential part of Mexican cul-
ture, which as the saying goes, will only die when no one remembers it.

tradición que tres reyes magos llamados Melchor, Gas-
par y Baltasar (representando a Europa, Asia y África
respectivamente) aparecen del oriente para adorar la
primera manifestación de Jesús como niño ofreciendo
tres regalos simbólicos: oro, incienso y mirra. En México, celebrar
el día de Reyes implica el compartir una deliciosa rosca: el pan
está hecho con flor de naranja y mantequilla, decorado con frutas
cristalizadas y nueces. Dentro de la rosca se encuentran pequeñas
figuras que representa al niño Jesús. Aquella persona que encuen-
tre el muñeco en su trozo de rosca tiene que preparar una fiesta
el 2 de febrero, día de la Candelaria, ofreciendo tamales y atole.
También, en algunos lugares del país, es tradición dar a los niños
de la casa algunos regalos.

algunas comunidades de México se tiene que cuidar de él como lo
hace cualquier padrino con su ahijado y esa obligación comienza
por vestirlo. El 02 de febrero, estando ya el niño engalanado, se le
deposita en una canasta con flores y es llevado por el padrino y
sus compadres - los dueños de la casa en donde se partió la rosca
– a la iglesia en la que en una misa solemne recibirá la bendición.
Una vez terminada la ceremonia se retorna a la casa donde se par-
tió la rosca para celebrar el acontecimiento con tamales y atole.
La lista de fechas con historia continúa. ¿Como pasar por alto el Car-
naval en ciudades como Mazatlán y Veracruz? ¿O las Fiestas de los
Lunes del Cerro, mejor conocido como la Guelaguetza en Oaxaca?
Cada región ofrece un pasado muy rico en historias y creencias, cos-
tumbres y platillos, fantasías y anhelos. Todas ellas en su conjunto
forman parte esencial de la cultura mexicana, la cual, como dice el
dicho, sólo morirá cuando nadie la recuerde.

nce a village with two houses and
some twenty inhabitants, Cabo San
Lucas today boasts as one of the most
desired high-end vacation and sec-
ond home retreats with dramatic and
contrasting nature, exclusive hotel and spa facilities
and a great variety of sites of interests, entertain-
ment and adventure, including some of the biggest
big-game fishing tournaments in the world. October
is the month, which all fisherman and sports enthusi-
asts are eagerly waiting for every year. The start of the
fishing season!
If you take a walk down the beach very early in the
morning, while still dark, or wait for the sunrise at the
Pedregal beach in Cabo San Lucas, you will get the
feeling that you are still in the early 20th century, in
that old small fishing village. At 6 AM sharp the quiet
ocean becomes a busy highway with fishing boats
coming out of the marina and spreading in all direc-
tions, all with the same goal, to catch some fish!
Cabo San Lucas is home to the largest Marlin tourna-
ment in the world. Besides Black and Blue Marlin, Baja
Sur offers a rich variety of fish to catch; Wahoo, Tuna,
Dorado, Roosterfish, Sailfish, Yellowtail and many oth-
ers. Among fish tournaments the most recognized are
Bisbee’s Black and Blue Tournaments, including Black
& Blue Marlin Tournament, which usually happens at
the end of October, East Cape Offshore Tournament,
happening end of July early August, and Los Cabos
Mayor Rosa Delia Cota starting the tournament./

n aquel entonces una pequeña comunidad
de dos casas y alrededor de veinte ha-
bitantes, Cabo San Lucas hoy en día es
uno de los lugares mas lujosos para va-
cacionar y tener una segunda casa debido
a su dramática belleza natural, exclusivos hoteles y
spas y una gran variedad de sitios de interés, entre-
tenimiento y aventura, incluyendo alguno de los
torneos de pesca más grandes del mundo. Octubre
es el mes que todos los pescadores y deportistas
entusiástas esperan ansiosamente año tras año. ¡Es el
comienzo de la temporada de pesca!
Si pasea por la playa muy temprano por la mañana,
cuando todavía esta obscuro, o espera el amanecer en
la Playa de Pedregal en Cabo San Lucas, por ejemplo, le
dará la impresión de que esta a principios del siglo XX
en aquella aldea de pescadores. A las 6 AM en punto, el
entonces tranquilo mar se convierte en una carretera
activa llena de botes y yates de pesca saliendo de la
marina y dirigiéndose en todas direcciones, todas con
el mismo propósito, ¡Pescar!
Cabo San Lucas es el hogar del torneo de pesca de
Marlin más importante del mundo. Además del Mar-
lin, el Sur de la Baja ofrece una rica variedad de espe-
cies para pescar: Sierra, Atún, Dorado, Pez Gallo, Pez
Vela, Jurel y muchos más. Entre los torneos de pesca,
los más reconocidos son los torneos de Bisbee’s Black
and Blue, incluyendo Black & Blue Marlin Tournament,
el cual usualmente ocurre al final de Octubre; torneo

When fishing is for a good cause, then the catch tastes
even better. The La Paz Gold Cup Black and Blue Marlin
Tournament was originally started by Rotary Club of Bal-
andra and a few years later a group of local resort develop-
ers joined them, to create a way to utilize the world class
big game fishing waters surrounding La Paz and to create
a fun fishing tournament which would raise much needed
funds for local charitable organizations.
In the opening year, in 2007, the La Paz Gold Cup tourna-
ment donated a total of $300,000 pesos to the Osiris Clinic
in La Paz. For 2008 the committee decided to spread the
wealth and double efforts to support also La Ciudad de los
Niños (The City of Children) and DIF Municipal. They were
able to donate them a total of $1,000,000 pesos, which is
the largest amount of funds ever donated to charity in La
Paz! James Curtiss, one of the organizers from The Cortez
Club, said, that “There are also other charities we would
like to help. We are changing people’s lives by putting
together a fun tournament for locals and foreigners, and
we are giving children a chance for the future.”
This is what I like about Baja California Sur. There are always
plenty of reasons and resources to celebrate, entertain, do
sports and nonetheless, do a good deed.

Osiris Clinic is comprised of a group of doctors who donate
their time and expertise to refit prosthetic devices for peo-
ple who otherwise could not afford these services. DIF is a
national organization that serves as a public body and is
responsible for implementing services designed for families

founded for homeless and orphaned children as a shelter
and new hope for a happy life.

Para el 2008, el comité organizador decidió redoblar esfuer-
zos para brindar más ayuda y también apoyar a La Ciudad
de Los Niños y el DIF Municipal. El resultado de la donación
fue de $1,000,000 pesos en total, la cual es la suma más
grande recabada para una donación a caridad en La Paz.
James Curtiss, uno de los organizadores de The Cortez Club,
comenta:“Aún hay muchas otras asociaciones que nos gus-
taría ayudar. Estamos cambiando la vida de las personas
al organizar un torneo de pesca divertido para locales y
extranjeros, a la vez que le estamos brindando a los niños
una oportunidad para el futuro”.

wenty-five years ago, three pioneering developers in
southern Baja started to think about how they were
going to educate their children. Cabo San Lucas was
then a small town that had no options that met their
needs. To solve the problem, the Díaz Rivera, Coppola
Joffoy, and Parr Bennett families founded Colegio El Camino, on
October 4, 1983.
Thanks to the families’ combined efforts and fund raising activi-
ties, Colegio El Camino became a reality. Located near the back
entrance to the Pedregal neighborhood in Cabo San Lucas, the
school opened with fifteen students, four classrooms, and play
areas initially without ground cover or shade.
From these beginning, Colegio El Camino has been character-
ized by careful attention to the details of education: personalized
teaching, trained personnel, and teaching methods that encour-
age student participation. In 1986, the school’s first class complet-
ed elementary school, and in 1989, El Camino was the first private
school in Cabo San Lucas to open a high school with certification
from Mexico’s Secretary of Public Education.

el Sur de Baja se preguntaban que podían hacer
referente a la educación académica de sus hijos. Al
ser Cabo San Lucas un pequeño pueblo, no había
opciones que cumplieran con las características
que ellos buscaban. Fue por ello que las familias Díaz Rivera,
Coppola Joffoy y Parr Bennett fundaron el 4 de Octubre de 1983
el Colegio El Camino.
A través del esfuerzo conjunto de las familias y de las diferentes
actividades para recabar fondos, Colegio El Camino comenzó a
crecer. Ubicado en la entrada posterior de Pedregal de Cabo San
Lucas, se inició el primer año escolar con tan sólo 15 alumnos, 4
salones y áreas de recreación sin pavimentar ni techar.
Desde sus inicios, Colegio El Camino se distinguió por el esme-
ro que prestaba a cada aspecto de la educación de los alumnos:
atención personalizada, personal capacitado, métodos de ense-
ñanza que propician la participación de los alumnos, etc. Fue así
que en 1986 egresó la primera generación de alumnos de Prima-
ria y en 1989, El Camino es la primera escuela particular en Cabo
San Lucas en ofrecer Bachillerato incorporado a la SEP.

Growth in enrollment was gradual. Each year, more local families
entrusted their children’s education to El Camino. Once at the school,
students developed the academic and personal skills that have
allowed them to serve in a wide variety of professional positions.
During the past few weeks, several special activities have been
dedicated to celebrating Colegio El Camino’s twenty-fifth anni-
versary. Festivities were kicked off by a special ceremony at the
school. Attending dignitaries included Ernesto Ibarra Montoya,
Municipal Delegate of Cabo San Lucas; Salvador Castro Ojeda,
Head of Regional Services for the Secretary of Public Education
in the Los Cabos municipality; Francisco Flores Zendejas, Super-
visor of Secondary Schools in the Los Cabos municipality; Leticia
Díaz Rivera, President of Colegio El Camino’s board of trustees;
Alberto Coppola Joffroy, Manuel Díaz Rivera, Marina Parr de
Perdomo, members of the board of trustees; Mario Almaguer
Valenzuela, representative of the school’s board of directors; and
Zulma Váquez de Vizcaíno, president of the board of the parents
association.
Contests were held to select a logo and video to commemorate

La matrícula fue creciendo poco a poco. Cada vez más, familias
de todo Cabo San Lucas comenzaban a confiar en El Camino la
educación de sus hijos. Éstos a su vez, desarrollaron habilidades
académicas y personales que los prepararon para ser hoy en día,
orgullosos profesionales en diferentes campos.
En días pasados se realizaron diversas actividades para celebrar
los 25 años del Colegio, comenzando con una ceremonia en las
instalaciones del colegio encabezada por el Patronato del Colegio
y la Dirección del plantel. A ella asistieron el Dr. Ernesto Ibarra Mon-
toya, Delegado Municipal de Cabo San Lucas; Prof. Salvador Castro

communication, honor, and above all, preparation for life.
Festivities were closed with a dinner dance attended by alumni,
their parents, members of the board of trustees, and members of
the board of directors. The event revolved around unforgettable
memories at the institution.
Twenty-five years after its founding, Colegio El Camino is proud
to have prepared seventeen graduating classes, earning the dis-
tinction as one of the best schools with bilingual education in all
grades in the southern Baja.

ducation is the catalyst of a potential. An educated citi-
zen can be an agent of change in his community, with
ripple effects that benefit hundreds or even thousands.
Education not only plays an important role for the
individual, but over the long term also becomes part
of a country’s development. We could all agree that the greater a
person’s education, the more he understands his contribution to
society. Contributing can be as easy as voting for a candidate for
public office. After all, what good is democracy if citizens do not
understand the power they yield in casting their vote?
With these ideas in mind, three and one-half years ago Juan Diaz
Rivera, Leslie Bost de Diaz Rivera, David Ocañas and Jessica Gutier-
rez de Ocañas saw an opportunity to participate in change for the
better by creating the Galento Foundation. The goal of the foun-
dation is to find students who have excelled in the public school
system in order to support them socially, financially, and morally
in gaining access to superior scholastic opportunities. The founda-
tion aims at rewarding students’ hard work and motivating them
to continue on to professional studies, enabling them to improve
themselves, their family, their community, and ultimately, their
country.The mission of the scholarship program is to provide the
opportunity to gifted students with socioeconomic challenges to
obtain the best education possible.
The vision is to help the best students attend first class caliber
education institutions and foster reciprocity in these students
instilling a sense of responsibility.

Fundación Galento AC. La meta de esta fundación es detectar a
estudiantes de excelente desempeño en el sistema escolar públi-
co para apoyarlos social, financiera y moralmente para que obten-
gan mejores oportunidades de educación. Esto premiará su arduo
esfuerzo y los motivará a estudiar una carrera profesional buscan-
do una mejor calidad de vida para ellos, su familia, su comunidad
y sobretodo, su país.
La misión del programa de becas es proporcionar una oportuni-
dad a estudiantes sobresalientes para asistir a instituciones edu-
cativas de excelencia y fomentar en ellos la reciprocidad y un sen-

El Aljibe. Located on the corner of Calle Revolucion and Calle Con-
stitucion just one block from the Cathedral and main plaza down-
town. Beautifully decorated new restaurant with expansive inte-
rior courtyard dining done in a Morrocan theme.  Very interesting
range food by a chef from Tijuana.  Great wine list.  Rooftop terrace
bar.  This restaurant is the latest and greatest newcomer to the City

Tres Gallinas. Located on Topete avenue and Juarez. Authentic

by the personal attention of the owners where you can have a very
romantic dinner. Great patio seating and reasonable priced.

CABO SAN LUCAS
LUCKY’S Cabo Grill. They are on Hidalgo, across from La Douce.
Small quaint outdoor restaurant, with live music.  Lucky (a dog) is
there every night to greet you and be sure your food is good! They
cook ribs, chicken, and steaks on the outside grill.

SAN JOSE
El Chilar. Contemporary Mexican restaurant. They have the best
Arrachera and the menu in general is great. It is amazing how the
chef mixes Mexican ingredients to accent the flavors of the food. You
will never get bored of the menu, as they change it every month, so
it is always nice to go there and see what is new!

EAST CAPE
Smokey’s Bar and Grill. East Capes new hot spot! Located on main
street in Los Barriles and part of the already well known East Cape
Smokehouse. After much anticipation Smokey’s is open and run-
ning full speed ahead! Four flat screen TV’s dedicated to sports, 15
peso beers, reasonably priced sandwiches,  and of course their
famous smoked fish!  Great service and open 7 days per week, see
you there!

centro de la ciudad. Hermosamente decorado, este restaurant tiene
un patio amplio de estilo Marroquí. Ofrece opciones de platillos muy
interesantes a través de su Chef originario de Tijuana, una excelente
lista de vinos y un bar en el techo. Este restaurant es el mejor y más
nuevo establecimiento en la ciudad de La Paz.

Tres Gallinas. Ubicado en la avenida Topete y calle Juárez. Cocina
cado fresco sazonado con un toque mediterráneo. Este excelente

CABO SAN LUCAS
LUCKY’S Cabo Grill. Situado en la calle Hidalgo frente a La Dolce.
Pequeño y agradable restaurant al aire libre con música en vivo.
Lucky, el perro, esta presente ahí cada noche para darle la bienveni-
da y asegurarse que la comida sea de su agrado. Preparan costillitas,
pollo y cortes a la parrilla.

SAN JOSE
El Chilar. Restaurant mexicano-contemporáneo. Ellos ofrecen la
mejor arrachera y el menú en general es excelente. Es sorprendente
como el Chef utiliza ingredientes típicos mexicanos para acentuar
los sabores en la comida. Siempre se sorprenderá por el menú, ya
que lo cambian cada mes, por lo que es agradable ir seguido y pro-
bar los nuevos y diferentes platillos.

Smokey’s Bar and Grill. ¡Éste es el lugar más nuevo y popular en
Cabo del Este! Ubicado en la calle principal de Los Barriles es parte
del ya conocido ahumadero de Cabo del Este. Después de mucha
expectativa, Smokey’s esta abierto y opera a toda velocidad. Hay
cuatro pantallas planas dedicadas a los deportes, 15 peso cervezas,
sándwiches a precios razonables y sobretodo, su ya famoso pesca-
do ahumado con un gran servicio. Esta abierto toda la semana. ¡Nos
vemos ahí!

A la luz de las estrellas
the airplane window, I was always curios about the place. So one
day I just booked a flight and came here to check it out. Within 24
hours I decided that it was my kind of city. The weather, the people
and the beauty of the place - it just felt the right place to be.
How did you get started in the real estate business?
I graduated in Marketing Administration and all jobs that I held
over the years were in marketing associated positions. Many
advised that I should go into sales, and I’m glad I did. In the first
year in real estate I doubled my marketing income, and tripled it
in the second year. Today I have more than 12 years of real estate
experience. About 6 years ago I joined CB Riveras. That is exactly
when we opened our first office in La Paz. Pedregal de La Paz at
that time was just a piece of land with a wall around it and the
city of La Paz was a sleepy little town of about 160,000 people. At
that time the world thought that La Paz was the capital of Boliv-
ia. Nobody knew that La Paz, BCS, even existed except for a few
foreigners who would occasionally come here to fish or dive. But
then, fortunately, things started to change.
This year you were praised with International Diamond Soci-
ety Award by Coldwell Banker Mexico. How do you see cur-
rent market conditions? Are such successes in real estate still
possible?
2007 was a very important and busy year for me. I was working a
lot with my clients over the internet and spent many hours with
them in the hot summer sun climbing up and down different lots

omodidad, sencillez y calidad son tres de las cuali-
dades que yo atribuiría a Gary. Además de sus viajes,
su amor por el arte y su gusto por La Paz, son otras
de las cosas que lo caracterizan. Su pasión por viajar
se resume en los 35 distintivos colocados en un atlas
mundial, mientras que su dedicación a la excelencia lo llevó a
estar entre una elite del 3% de más de 100,000 agentes de ventas
de Coldwell Banker alrededor del mundo. Habla Hindi y Urdu, solía
divertirse en fiestas al lado de Elizabeth Taylor y Richard Burton, y
sus raíces provienen en parte de mi país natal, la entonces Yugo-
slavia. Y esta no es la única razón por la que encuentro a Gary muy
interesante y siempre muy placentero para platicar.
¿Qué te trajo a La Paz, Gary? ¿Y qué fue lo que te convenció a
quedarte?
Yo empecé a visitar varios destinos en las costas de México desde
1963 y traté de evaluar la posibilidad de vivir en una de estas ciu-
dades al retirarme. En todos los años que viajé desde San Fran-
cisco a Puerto Vallarta el avión sobrevolaba La Paz. Al ver desde
la ventanilla del avión, siempre tuve la curiosidad de conocer el
lugar. Entonces, en alguna ocasión decidí reservar un boleto de
avión que me trajera aquí para ver que había. Dentro de las próxi-
mas 24 horas decidí que era mi tipo de ciudad. Su clima, su gente y
la belleza del lugar—sentí que era el lugar ideal para estar.
¿Cómo empezaste en el negocio de los bienes raíces?
Yo me recibí de la carrera de Administración de Mercadotec-
nia y todos los trabajos que tuve al pasar de los años fueron en
posiciones relacionadas con la mercadotecnia. Mucha gente me
sugería que debería entrar al área de ventas y ahora me alegro
de haberlo hecho. En eI primer año de estar en bienes raíces
dupliqué el ingreso que percibía en el área de mercadotecnia,
y lo tripliqué en el segundo año. Hoy tengo más de 12 años de
experiencia en bienes raíces. Hace aproximadamente 6 años me
uní a la empresa CB Riveras. Fue entonces cuando abrimos nues-
tra primera oficina en La Paz. En aquella época el Pedregal de
La Paz era sólo un terreno con una barda perimetral y la ciudad
de La Paz era un pueblo tranquilo de aproximadamente 160,000
habitantes. En aquella época el mundo pensaba que La Paz era la
capital de Bolivia. Nadie sabía que La Paz, BCS, ni siquiera existía,

con la excepción de unos cuantos extranjeros que ocasionalmente
venían aquí a pescar o a bucear. Pero luego, afortunadamente, las
cosas empezaron a cambiar.
Este año fuiste galardonado con el premio “International Dia-
mond Society” otorgado por Coldwell Banker México. ¿Cómo
ves las condiciones actuales en el mercado? ¿Es aún posibble
conseguir tal éxito en los bienes raices?
2007 fue un año muy importante y con mucha actividad para mí.
Estuve trabajando mucho con mis clientes en la red y pasé mu-
chas horas con ellos en el cálido sol de verano subiendo y bajando
a diferentes predios en Pedregal, mostrando las mejores vistas y
enseñándoles la ciudad y el proyecto. Pero todo esto tuvo su
recompensa. Todo este arduo trabajo me significó ganar el
reconocimiento a nivel nacional y me puso en el nada despre-
ciable 3% más alto de un total de 100,000 agentes de ventas de
Coldwell Banker alrededor del mundo.
En el 2008 el mercado cambió significativamente, pero esto no
significa que que no se pueda alcanzar los éxitos del año pasado.
El número de clientes del extranjero ha bajado pero tenemos un
mercado nacional vibrante. Estamos siendo reconocidos por todo
México como una buena inversión en bienes raíces y muchos
mexicanos de todo el país están empezando a invertir en La Paz.
En estos tiempos se deben mantener las relaciones con clientes ya
existentes y desarrollar nuevos.
¿Qué o quién fue lo que más contribuyó al éxito que has
tenido?
Pienso que fueron dos cosas. La materia de hablar en público en
la preparatoria, me ayudó a sobreponerme de mi timidez, y haber
trabajado con Bob West como su asistente personal en United Air-
lines. Hasta la fecha, le debo todo a Bob por haberme enseñado a
redactor correctamente.
¿Cuál es el secreto de tu éxito?
Aprendí que lo más importante es saber escuchar a tus clientes y
luego poder cumplir sus deseos y requerimientos. Yo hago segui-
miento con mis clientes inmediatamente aún cuando no tenga las
respuestas. Mis clientes confían en mí y eso me agrada.
