FEATHER AND FAN SHAWL

Feather and Fan Shawl knits up quickly with only one skein of sock yarn. The pattern is worked
from the top center down in garter stitch, using yarn overs to give it its half circle shape. The
feather and fan border is reversible, yet not identical on both sides. The loops of the crochet bind
off are the perfect finish for this simple lace pattern. Size: Approx. 140 x 30 cm / 55 x 12 inches (after
blocking).

Materials

C. 400m / 440 yards of fingering yarn. Sample shown in Dibadu Funnies Cool Merino.
1 circular needle 4 mm / US 6
1 hook 3mm / US 2.5
3 stitch markers

Set up rows

Cast on 3 stitches. Knit 8 rows in garter stitch. This produces 4 garter stitch ridges on each side of your
work.

Pick-up row: Knit 3, turn work clock-wise, pick up four stitches along garter stitch edge (one in each of the 4
garter stitch ridges), turn work 90 degrees clock-wise again, then pick up 3 stitches along cast-on edge (10
stitches total).

Garter section

Repeat the following two rows 32 times until you have 214 stitches on the needles, or until you have at least
60% of your yarn remaining. Remove markers in the last row.

R 1: k3, yo, k to marker, slm (slip marker), yo, k to next marker, yo, slm, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3
R 2: k3, yo, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3

Feather and Fan border

yo, k3
R 4: k3, yo, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3

*k7 based on a stitch count of 214 at the end of the garter section. If you have more or less sts at that point,
you will need to increase or decrease the number of knit sts accordingly in order to center the feather and
fan pattern. If your stitch count differs significantly, you will need to reduce or increase the number of
pattern repeats between the markers (each pattern repeat needs 18 sts).

R 5: k3, yo, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3
R 6: k3, yo, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3
R 7: k3, yo, k to marker, slm (slip marker), #k2tog 3 times, (yo, k1) 6 times, k2tog 3 times, repeat from #
to next marker, slm, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3
R 8: k3, yo, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3

Repeat rows 5-8 for another 8 times. Every time you have more than 18 sts between the yo and the stitch
marker you add in another feather and fan repeat. You will remove the original first and last marker when
you add in the two new markers at the beginning and end of the pattern.

Note: If you plan to upsize the pattern, I advise you to limit the feather and fan border to the given 40 rows
and increase only the garter section. There are no increases within the feather and fan repeats, so the
border will become too narrow if you work it too long.

Crochet bind off

Insert the crochet hook knitwise through the first two sts on the left needle. Yarn over the hook (wrap the
yarn from back to front). Pull loop through the sts on the needle and slip the sts from the left needle.

Work 4 chain sts (hook the yarn and draw it through the slip knot). Insert the crochet hook knitwise through
the first two sts on the left needle. Yarn over the hook. Pull loop through the sts on the needle and the st on
your hook and slip the sts from the left needle. Repeat until you have reached the end of the row.

Alternatively, you can knit the bind off as follows: Knit 2 together.

# Insert the left hand needle into the front of the stitch on your right hand needle, from left to right, knit this
stitch. Repeat from # 3 times. This creates the chained loops. Knit 2 together. Cast off 1 stitch by slipping
the first stitch on your right hand needle over the 2nd stitch, and off the needle. Repeat until you have
reached the end of the row.

When all stitches have been bound off, cut yarn and pull the tail through the last stitch, pulling to secure the
work. Weave in yarn ends, soak and block.
