VOL. 1 NO. 1 May 1 4198] Tribal Health &Evangelism Dr. Larry and Ellen Banta Missionary Recruits to Sitapur, Madhya Pradesh MAY 1, 1981 OPPORTUNITIES for an effective medical evangelism program among the tribal people of central India have been evident for some time. But due to lack of qualified medical personnel the true potentials have never been realized. TRIBAL HEALTH 8e EVANGELISM was established as an outreach of the First Christian Church of O'NeilL Nebraska in order to provide the needed personnel and supplies to begin and maintain a medical evangelism program in the area of Sitapur, Madhya Pradesh in central India. SITAPUR, lies on the outskirts of a jungle area nestled in a fertile valley in central India. Despite its outward physical beauty many of the people live in the fear and bondage of Hinduism, worship of evil spirits, and very poor standard of health. Tuberculosis, leprosy, high infant mortality, poor nutri tion, malaria, and tropical skin diseases combined with the demands of a cruel and heartless religious system leave quite an opportunity to express God's compassionate love. Medical evangelism in an area such as this will open doors to truly effective preaching of God's Kingdom. THE CHURCH OF CHRIST has been established in Sitapur and the surround ing area for over thirty years. During the time The Bernel Getter family have been used mightily of God in the establishment of many churches and schools as well as an impressive agriculture program. It has been their dream to further expand the work in the area to include a medical and public health program. In 1978 the Banta's, while on a short term project in Kulpahar, India, were able to visit Sitapur. They were impressed at that time with the opportunity and need. They committed themselves to returning to begin the medical work and to help expand the evangelistic outreach in tne area. Since this Is our first regular news letter we would like to first Intro duce ourselves to you. Introduce our work to you and give you some Idea of our needs. We hope to be able to publish this every 3 months until de parture then probably every other month. DR. LARRY BANTA was born June 3, 1954 In AAlddletown, Ohio. They were ordained to mission work by the Douglas St. Church of Christ In Lincoln, 1978. In the tall of 1978 they had the opportunity to work In Kulpahar, India with Dr. Steve Plettner and Madonna Burget In helping to expand the medical work there. It was during this trip to India the Banta's were able to visit the work In SItapur and were truly touched with the need. The Bantas have three children. Ethan, born In 1977 (celebrated his first birthday In India) Heather, born 1979 and Nathannael, born 1980. OUR IMMEDIATE plans are to continue work In the Indian Health Service until July 1982 in order to repay school debts. During this time we will be using weekends and vacation time tor traveling to chur ches and camps in the immediate area. It our visa comes through on schedule we plan to leave U.S. around July 20, ot 1982, spend one week with Ellen's parents in Hong Kong and arrive on the field by or before August 1 of next year.
