CIVILISATION
LES MAGASINS
Lets take a walk through a typical street in France.
The first thing you will notice is that French streets are all rather narrow and winding with seemingly no order to them. The road itself is not tarred like in Kuala Lumpur, but has cobblestones, some dating back several hundred years. Many streets are reserved for pedestrians only, which makes the shopping area safer and pollution-free. Low-rise buildings with beautiful faades line the length of these quaint streets and above the roofs of these buildings, you can probably catch a glimpse of the spire of the town church.
The second thing you will notice is that there are very few shopping centres like in Kuala Lumpur. In general, shops are all located at street level and all in a charming jumble, - the bakers next to the hairdressers and the tobacco shop in front of the butchers. And best of all are the smells that linger in the air - the aroma of warm crusty loaves, tender roasted chicken and freshly brewed coffee
Enter a boulangerie(f) and the chances are that you will be struck by the variety of bread available, all of which are freshly baked in the shop itself. Its no good just asking for bread, you have to decide what type of bread rye, wholemeal, walnut, apricot, sultana, - and in what form, - shaped like a pie, or a roll, or a ball, or a braid.
The difference between a boulangerie(f) and a ptisserie(f) is that in the latter, they sell all sorts of scrumptious cakes, ice-cream, chocolates, sweets and pies, also freshly made in the shop itself. Nowadays, you can see quite a number of boulangerie(f)-ptisserie(f), selling both bread and cakes. A shop specialising in chocolates and sweets is called a confiserie(f).
A French butcher (le boucher) is a professional in his work. He doesnt just sell you meat. He cuts it, takes out the bones, and even prepares it in the form you want. French butchers all seem to be culinary chefs and can offer you recipes on how to cook the cut you are buying. Nowadays, you can also see quite a few boucherie(f)-charcuterie(f). Traditionally, people go to a charcuterie(f) to buy sausages and other cold cuts. W WF FD D 1 10 01 10 01 1 F FR RA AN N A AI IS S Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia France Institute

Lpicerie(f), unlike the above shops, does not specialise in any particular item. Racks of green vegetables and fruit are placed on the sidewalk itself and inside, there is also a cheese counter where you have a small selection of cheeses. You can also find canned and frozen food here. Most of them are open for longer hours than other shops to allow forgetful or busy people to shop.
Le tabac(f) is of course where you can buy tobacco. But it also offers other services. For instance, you can also buy stamps, telephone cards, lottery tickets, post-cards and many other things here. Most of these tobacco shops also form part of a newspaper and magazine shop or a caf.
Le caf(m) is an institution in France. There are many different types of cafs(m). There is the fancy jet-set type where you go to see and be seen. There is the young student type where you can play billiard, video games and cards. There is the cosy homely type where you can see mothers with their babies in prams and old men playing cards. Customers seldom frequent different cafs(m), so everyone generally knows everyone else in a given caf. One doesnt really go to a caf(m) to drink, though they do serve all types of drinks, from wine to coffee to soft drinks, as well as snacks. The main attraction is to meet your friends and talk. On sunny days, tables and chairs sprawl over the sidewalk and customers just sit and bask in the soft sunshine.

ADDITIONAL LES ADJECTIFS QUALIFICATIFS
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. The major differences between adjectives in French and English concern agreement and placement.
In French, an adjective is usually placed after the noun it modifies and must agree in gender and number with the noun.
In English, an adjective usually comes before the noun it modifies and is invariable, that is, it does not agree.
Remember that: In English, adjectives are placed before nouns (e.g., a red car). However, most adjectives in French are placed after nouns (e.g., une voiture rouge).
The following adjectives, however, can be placed before nouns.
jeune nouveau vieux petit grand bon mauvais gros* - joli beau** -
Note: maigre and laid are both placed after nouns
Adjectives agree in both number and gender with the noun or pronoun they modify. For regular adjectives the masculine form is the base form to which endings are added. The feminine adjective is formed by adding an e. The plural adjective is formed by adding s. Thus we have :
In the singular, un petit garon(m) une petite fille(f) (a small boy) (a small girl)
In the plural, des petits garons des petites filles (small boys) (small girls)

We will learn later that :
There are, however, a number of adjectives which are called irregular, because they do not have the normal -e, -s, or -es endings. The endings of these irregular adjectives vary widely and often change the pronunciation.
Some adjectives are completely irregular. Here are a few examples :
masculine feminine english doux faux favori frais long public douce fausse favorite frache longue publique soft false favorite fresh long public
Other adjectives can be grouped in categories. Here are a few examples :
masculine ending feminine ending french english -el -eil -il -on -s -en -et -er -eux -eur -teur -f -c -ou -elle -eille -ille -onne -sse -enne -te -re -euse -euse -trice -ve -che -olle cruel cruelle pareil pareille gentil gentille mignon mignonne gros grosse ancien ancienne secret secrte cher chre heureux heureuse trompeur trompeuse crateur cratrice actif active franc franche fou folle cruel similar kind, nice cute big, fat old secretive dear, expensive happy deceptive creative active frank crazy W WF FD D 1 10 01 10 01 1 F FR RA AN N A AI IS S Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia France Institute

Some adjectives have identical masculine and feminine forms. This is generally the case with adjectives ending in e in their masculine form and with foreign adjectives like 'snob', 'cool', etc. Here are a few of these adjectives:
